This Weekend In Athens

It's a weekend full of really great causes, so go enjoy some entertainment and reach deep when it comes time...

FRI: Strangely enough, this weekend begins with a parade by New Orleans' Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It starts at the Arch at 4:30 and proceeds to School Kids Records (yes, a whole block and a half), where the band will play a few more songs. For more info, see AthensMusic.com's article on it (info comes from Jomo Entertainment).

Then tonight at the 40 Watt is the "The Cure vs. The Smiths" benefit show for Amy Dykes. Pretty self-explanatory, but it features a Cure cover band, a Smiths cover band, I Am The World Trade Center (their first appearance in a while), and the group's alter-ego, DJ Twin Powers, spinning music. Should be a dance-able good time, and even if not, it's a great cause. Read this Banner article or this Flagpole article for more info.

SAT: For the early-risers out there, you have two wonderful options open to you - depending on your favorite mode of transport. Firstly, Nuci's Space's "Space Race" (a 5K walk/run around UGA's campus) takes place at 9AM. The event helps raise money for Nuci's Space's projects.

For bicycling enthusiasts, the main event of the Tour de Sprawl takes place at the same time, starting at College Square. The tour helps raise money for Bike Athens - which helps fight off sprawl and make bike lanes, etc. For more on that event, including a list of stops and speakers on the tour, see this page.

That afternoon, Nuci's Space will host its fourth anniversary party from 2-11 PM. A variety of bands are playing and the event is free (though, may I suggest you make a donation). Click either of those links for more details and don't forget about their charity rock auction, which lasts through the 30th.

Also that evening, Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars play music based on the poetry of Robert Burns at the Go Bar (hopefully outside). Starts at 9PM.
