This Weekend In Athens
Happy Halloween Everyone...
FRI: At the
Caledonia, you can find the FREE "Athens For Kerry" rally. Now again, I usually say stay the hell away from the political shows, but it's free and you can skip the boring movie. In exchange, you get Don Chambers (8PM - Outdoors if the weather permits), Ta Kavourakia (10:30 - don't know much about 'em), Astra (11:30 - hear good things), and
Hope For Agoldensummer (12:30 - they're really damn good).
If you're not in the mood for politics, you can go see
Aqualove perform Bowie's
Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars in its entirety at
Tasty World.
SAT: Annaray, going by the name "Bone Machine", will be performing an entire set of Pixies covers. They really do play those songs amazingly well - often better than the actual Pixies. Ignore the picture in Flagpole (worse than the one above) and go to this show anyway. It'll be great. For another endorsement,
read this Banner article. And don't be lame - wear your costume.
SUN: In what will either be a very cool or very disastrous event (in either case, worth seeing),
63 Crayons and
Casper & The Cookies will
play atop Wuxtry records. Show starts at 5:30. I'd go see that combo anyway - the location just makes it all the cooler.
Another monumental event happens later that evening - the return of
Brown Frown. The band will debut its new five-member line-up at the UltraMod on Sunday. It's loud, sloppy, aggressive, drunk, and perfect to spill beer all over your costume to.
How the UltraMod works (for those who've never been): It's somewhat like a club-meets-house-party. To get there, leave downtown and go north on College Ave., when you reach MLK, take a left. Immediately on your right you'll see a fence, as soon as you pass the fence, there's a driveway and parking area. You're there.
Some alcohol/liquor will prolly be provided (usually hunch punch or a keg). You are encouraged to bring your own as well. Donations accepted/encouraged. Things usually start up between 10 and 11 - like a club. The trick is not being the first people, but not missing the party. Oh, and it'll be loud. And yes, it's a costume party.
(
Note: Since UltraMod shows aren't always the most reliable, please check back here before going to the show - there maybe updates/changes. If I find out anything, this post'll be updated.)
For stuff I might've missed, you can see
Flagpole's list of Halloween activities.
UPDATE: The UltraMod show will begin much earlier than expected in an effort to allow us working stiffs to not be dead on Monday morning. I was told 9 or 9:30 will be the band's start time. Be there, be costumed. It'll rock.
