This Weekend In Athens
Last big weekend of the year and maybe for some time after (not counting New Year's)...
Finally, we get to use this picture again!
FRI: Another hard choice night. Starting with the
40 Watt Christmas Party, where you can see: Lil' Flip Scoldja (who I've never heard, but
Hillary seems to dig a lot), France Lite (
Je Suis France minus some of the above faces - Where art thou, Dark?), Joe Christmas (what
Summer Hymns was before they were Summer Hymns), and finally dance the rest of the evening away with
DJ Twin Powers. There's some difference in the Flagpole and 40 Watt listings, but maybe you'll see
Fairmount Fair too (read the comments below and maybe someone'll clarify).
Of course if that's not your scene (that is, if you're more into straight-up rock*), you can always head down the
Georgia Theatre to check out Donkey Punch,
The Stand-Ins, and
Lona. Lona's Christmas shows are always fun. And they sound great there too.
Finally, you can also see the much-buzzed-about Iron Hero and the instantly-charming
Venice Is Sinking at
Tasty World.
* = Not to imply that The France isn't.
One of these things is not like the other...
SAT: Some more disparate choices tonight. Early on, you can see Ralph Roddenbery & Friends at Seney-Stovall Chapel (right next to the Varsity). Doesn't happen often, and Ralph can play. Doors at 7:15, showtime at 8PM. Read
this Flagpole article or
this AthensMusic.com story for more info. For
way more info,
Or, of course, you can see The Wedding Band (instrumental cover band featuring folks from
Circulatory System) at
Flicker. Show starts at 8:30 PM.
Then, later on, if you like German Cabaret music, there's
Audition with Max Reinhardt at the
40 Watt. (Don Chambers does not seem to be listed on the bill anymore, apparently.)
But if you like heavier rock,
Brown Frown and
A play at the
Caledonia. One band that worships Harvey Milk and one that was Harvey Milk. Both will rock your face off. Read our recent interview with Brown Frown
here.
