Reasons You Should Appreciate Athens

This is going to be an ongoing series of posts in which I list things that I miss about Athens...

The Engine Room (call it Room 16 if you want, it'll always be the Engine Room to me)

Eugene, OR has no good bars.

TTO and I were invited by some of her classmates to go out this past weekend. Being that we have no friends, we were excited to have been asked. "Give us directions to the bar" we said.

Upon arrival, we discover that the bar is in a strip mall... and it's a sports bar.

We were sure there'd be no one inside the bar but crusty old men. Much to our surprise, it was filled w/ college students. Keep in mind... we're not talking about "Franky Freshmen" and "Susie Sophomores". These were older, grad student-looking folks who would likely spend alot of time on the Pulaski St. end of downtown Athens...

Let me just say this one more time for emphasis... College students in Eugene hang out in a sports bar that's located in a strip mall!

This made me miss the Engine Room... but it also made me feel guilty for spending my last few years in Athens w/o frequenting my old bar.

So, be sure that you don't take the cool Athens bars for granted. You could be in a strip mall in Eugene, OR watching celebrity poker on ESPN.
