This Weekend In Athens
"I know a place..."
FRI: A completely kick-ass line-up tonight at the
Georgia Theatre featuring
Contraband,
Mouser,
Venice Is Sinking, and
We Versus The Shark. It's like a house party from 3 years ago... complete with funny-tasting beer. Here's the official scoop on the new albums by the latter two bands: Nothin'. Updates? Jeff? Lucas? Anyway, the lack of impending new LP's doesn't make this show any less compelling. It's four great bands back to back. Can't beat that. The Georgia Theatre website says:
Mouser 9:30 PM
Venice is Sinking 10:00 PM
We Versus The Shark 10:45 PM
Contraband 11:55 PM
Anyone think it'll start that early for real? Just listing it as a heads up.
SAT: Punk rock fans rarely have a better lineup these days than the one at
Tasty World featuring the return of
Guff to an Athens stage along with new mainstays
The Dumps and
Thunderchief (both of whose members all run through various punk bands of the past). The recent story on Guff is this: they got signed to Go Kart Records (as big a record label as you can get in the punk world and still maintain "cred") and went to L.A. to record their label debut. In the process of recording, somehow Steve Perry (yes,
that Steve Perry) heard them and asked them to cover a rare (unreleased?) Journey song called "I Can See It In Your Eyes" for inclusion on an upcoming Journey tribute album. He produced the session for the song himself. So Guff is down with Journey. You can print that.
Speaking of former icons,
The Lemonheads (kinda) return to Athens to play the
40 Watt. It's actually Evan Dando with some new guys, but that's all it ever was anyway, right? People who love the 90's will be there. Feel free to share your favorite Lemonheads memories in the comments, even though it's totally weird if you have something that classifies as that. Bonus points if they include Matt Penfield.
