This Weekend In Athens
Post-fest hangover weekend...
FRI: Peter Alvanos - who is apparently determined to make a music venue out of anywhere around town - is playing the
J Scott Hair Salon at 5 PM - is that technically a "happy hour" show? I don't know.
Also at 5 PM, local heavily-touring punksters
Guff will be releasing their newest album (released on Go Kart - which is a big deal for punks) first at
Nuci's Space as part of an all-ages show. Yes, this is the album we told y'all about a while back where Steve Perry from Journey sings on a rare Journey track that he asked the band to cover. Pretty sweet. Our pals in
Thunderchief will also be present and rocking. Later on that night, Guff will play again upstairs at
Tasty World.
Downtown, you can catch
Cars Can Be Blue at
Little Kings,
Drivin' N' Cryin' at the
Georgia Theatre, or
the Help at
Tasty World. Away from downtown, at a secret location known only as 466 Whitehead Rd. (whatever that means) there will be a
"Global Warming Acoustic Awareness Concert" featuring performances by
Claire Campbell,
Zachary Gresham, and
Rob Veal (who is replacing Ham 1 who had to cancel due to a death in the family of one of their band members - we wish them well). It's a campaign to raise money to buy public libraries copies of "An Inconvenient Truth". I've never seen this, so I can't comment. But there's a whole slew of details for the downloadin'
here and if you click that poster.
SAT: A fantastic annual Athens event happens Saturday afternoon: The
Blind Pig's Anniversary Party. Not only do you get great outdoor live music (weather permitting), but they usually serve up huge portions of free food (pig roast, burgers, bbq chicken, etc). Yes, free. You just gotta buy your own drinks. Pretty cool, huh? This year's performers include
Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band,
Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads, and
The Help amongst others.
That night in the clubs there's also
Kings Of Prussia at the
Caledonia and
Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise at
Tasty World.
