This Weekend In Athens
FRI: The Arcs are back! The local super-group of sorts plays its second (or third depending on what you count) show at the
Caledonia tonight. It's fair to say that the vast majority of the attendees at their last show thought it rocked. Because it did. Tonight they're with
The Empties and
Olympus Mans.
Just up the street, the now-infrequently performing
Lona (who just re-released their first album and are supposedly going to deliver the oft-delayed follow-up album this year - just like Guns N' Roses will) play the
Georgia Theatre tonight.
Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band will be there too.
For a more bluegrass-y feel, there's
16 Tons and
Curley Maple at the
Melting Point. And for the best of local R&B,
Ben Stevens can be heard at
Little Kings.
SAT: The big show tonight is undoubtedly the Fat Man showcase at the
Georgia Theatre. The lineup is:
Matias (10:00),
Buddy System (10:30),
Fairmount Fair - as a duo? (11:00),
Casper & the Cookies (11:30),
Deaf Judges (12:00), and
Venice is Sinking (12:30) who are recording their newest album at least in part
at that very venue. Helluva lineup.
There are actually a couple of other showcase style shows - the
Superfluous Umlaut showcase at the
Caledonia and the
Gypsies Killing Unicorns showcase at the
40 Watt.
Finally, there's some dancing to be had
Rye Bar with
DJ Mahogany and at
Little Kings with
Bitch Switch.
SUN: Kingpin's hosts a new house band called
Strike Force, the description of which in Flagpole sounds fantastic: "The new house band at Kingpins features members of Barbara Cue, Southern Bitch and The Dashboard Saviors, rocking covers (Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, etc.) and originals." Sounds like my peeps, but I haven't heard about this - details, y'all?
