This Weekend In Athens

It's a good weekend to live in Athens.

Friday:
There's the return of Harvey Milk, fresh off of tour, over at the 40 Watt. The great Tenement Halls will be opening. Bearfoot Hookers are playing at the Caledonia, and there's a Comic Relief benefit over at the Georgia Theatre, recognizing the 25th anniversary of Andy Kaufman's passing, with proceeds benefiting artists affected by Hurricane Katrina. Hope for Agoldensummer will be at the Melting Point tonight, and a new band, Language Arts, which has some members from an Epic At Best, are playing the Tasty World (along with a few other bands I've never heard of).

Saturday:
There's a stellar lineup at the 40 Watt with Maserati, The Buddy System, and Summerbirds in the Cellar. It's been maybe a year or so since Maserati played here, so we're definitely due.

The Blind Pig is celebrating its anniversary with a pig roast and such, along with music from some of the Dashboard Saviors, Betsy Franck and the Bareknuckle Band and others. Commerce is also having its City of Lights Festival all day, featuring music from Curley Maple and others, as well as their weekly Farmer's Market. Should be a good kid-friendly event. (Don't forget about the Farmer's Market at Bishop Park.) There's also a Solar-Powered Music Festival at the Georgia Nature Center, also with Curley Maple as well as Grogus and some other bands.

Sunday:
Vic Chesnutt and niece Liz Durrett, performing together, at the Melting Point for the Athens 441 show.
