More Free Local Music - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 12:39 PM | Permanent Link
Pride Parade has made some of their tracks from their latest album Descendentsavailable for free download for a limited time from their myspace page. Awesome hookup, guys! I re-listened to this album over the weekend and loved it. Makes you drive fast though.

Ham1 is wisely offering their new album, The Underground Stream, as a free download on their website at the moment. They did the same with the last one, which is still available there, and that's when I first gave them a listen. You can download (or stream) one track at a time, or grab the whole thing at once. Thanks guys!
In other news, there's some mention of Athens & R.E.M. in this Matthew Sweet article.
Southern Shelter Records - posted by Mail Clerk @ 8:27 AM | Permanent Link
The announcement finally happened: Southern Shelter Records is official! Sloan Simpson's new company is releasing a 7" of two solo tunes by Creston Spiers (Harvey Milk, A). Details here (duh) along with a recent set by Creston. This rocks. Now everyone's gonna start bugging Sloan to record their band and then release it!
Free Music - Jack Logan, WVTS - posted by Mail Clerk @ 3:00 AM | Permanent Link
Jeff (from AMdN) wrote us recently to share some free music:
TDJ - Thought you might be interested in this live "CD" of Jack Logan & Liquor Cabinet that he gave us to post for free download / streaming. It's from 1990 & 1995 in Athens and NYC.
Thanks, Jeff! You know we dig on Jack Logan and also free stuff. So, that's a good combo.
Attn Nick Lowe Fans - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
Recently stumbled onto this site. I think everyone else already knew about it. Anyway, as Nick Lowe fans already know, most of his stuff's outta print. Well, this guy's done us the favor of uploading them in decent quality as full albums. Most are from CD, a couple from LP. Just do a search of the archives (or do an advanced Google search with "Nick Lowe" in that URL). The links/password are in the comments for each post.
Also, Flat Duo Jets fans will wanna search there as well.
UPDATE: Want to add the disclaimer that you should of course buy these albums if you like 'em when they're re-released.
Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
We Versus The Shark and Deaf Judges are among the acts performing at Farm 255 tonight. Strange venue (being outside) for loud acts, but if the weather's nice, oughta be cool. Also, it's a new month, and with that comes a new free WVTS cover song.
Man, I need to get my head and my ass wired together. This was apparently last night. What good is a blog for w/o timely info? Anyway, my bad. Tonight you can see Summerbirds In The Cellar at the 40 Watt. The WVTS track is valid, so their picture stays up (and I'm too lazy to change it).
Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
The 40 Watt's hosting another great mid-week free show tonight featuring Pegasuses-XL, Bomb The Music Industry, and Deaf Judges amongst others. I think that tonight's show in in celebration of the newest release by Pegasuses-XL, but I maybe mistaken there.
Meanwhile, Diet Rockstar, The HEAP, and Kenosha Kid will all be next door at the Caledonia.
Pride Parade's New Album Is Done - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
According to their myspace page, Pride Parade's new album is 11 tracks long and is now fully mastered and in that crucial stage where all it needs is the right record company (right, musicians?). Anyway, I have no doubts that it'll be great.
You can hear some of it at the aforementioned page ("Mr Man"'s been a crowd pleaser for a while now). They open for Harvey Milk March 8th at the Caledonia and at the Watt on the 28th with the Black Lips, and I'm sure they'll play lotsa this stuff then too.
Also, their debut EP is almost sold out. Talk to them if you want one. Two of the four songs on it will be on the new record. Two won't.
Happy Mardi Gras! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:10 AM | Permanent Link
Happy Mardi Gras, y'all! I know it's not a big holiday to most people outside of New Orleans and a few other select cities, but all the same, hope y'all have a great one. At least go treat yourself to something awesome, like a good meal you wouldn't normally splurge for or something along those lines. Oh, and Home Of The Groove is of course the best source for Mardi Gras tunes. Enjoy.
New, Free WVTS Covers Album - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
The fun-loving scamps in We Versus The Shark have come up with a cool project for 2008. No, it's not called "finish the damn new LP" (though they say that'll happen this Spring). It's a free covers album called MURMURMUR, released through Quote Unquote Records.
They're going to be releasing one song on the first of every month this year. The first is a cover of the song "Right Away" by Pattern Is Movement. Get it here. And then go back there at the first of every month. I sure as hell won't remember to remind y'all, but maybe Jeff'll drop by and tell us when they're up. I hope.
Oh, and while the album is free technically, a donation to the record company while you're there maybe helpful. I'm sure they don't have Radiohead money sitting around.
Free Singles On iTunes - posted by Mail Clerk @ 10:32 AM | Permanent Link
In a very cool new practice which I hope continues, iTunes is offering free singles from both Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen right now. Also, some of their new release prices have dropped (see the new Springsteen, new Ringo, etc.). Hope they keep it up.
Oh, and for fans of the Boss, here's links to all three parts of Ickmusic's posting of Springsteen Live at the Roxy, 1978.
New Eskimos Record - For Free - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:33 AM | Permanent Link
So, the new record from the Eskimos, who haven't played live in forever but who were a staple in Athens several years back have decided to release their new album online for free (and have placed several CD-R versions in records stores around town as well, also free). Not sure how long this has been available because even though we're friends with some of those folks, they decided to let us find out through the friggin' Flagpole. Seriously bands, especially those who comment here and/or are people we know personally - we will print legitimate news and not just rumors and opinion if you send it. We do sometimes check our e-mail box. Not a lot, but sometimes.
Anyway, I digress. Long story short, the record's called Kola and you can get it here. I can't tell you if it's any good because I haven't heard it yet.
RIAA Still In Bad Mood, Taking It Out On College Students - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
The RIAA is suing 15 UGA students cause they didn't pay for "My Humps" or "Kryptonite (I'm On It)" or "Anything By John Mayer". Actually, we don't know what song they didn't pay for that ticked off the suits. But I'm pretty sure it's one of those cause no one in their right mind would pay for them.
Now, in my old age, I've come around to actually paying for most music I acquire. Some stuff's outta print, some stuff I wanna sample first, and some stuff someone in my family already owns (which is legal to copy - check those laws!). That being said, the RIAA needs to realize that their real problem is that they're not putting out albums that anyone wants to own anymore. Oh well.
Till then, we're in solidarity with these UGA Students. Unless one of them is Gene Whitner Milner III.
Stream JazzFest - posted by Mail Clerk @ 11:13 AM | Permanent Link
The second (final) weekend of JazzFest takes place this weekend in New Orleans. Obviously, if you're at home reading this, you're not going. But you can still stream the main stage performances here (note: all times are central time).
Shoorah! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:02 AM | Permanent Link
After I begged him to do a post about it, Dan over at Home Of The Groove wrote a bit about the history of the word "Shoorah" (or "Shoo-Ra") in New Orleans music. Bottom line, nobody really knows what it means, but it's been the inspiration for several great songs. My favorite is by Allen Toussaint. His version, as well as the cover by Betty Wright (scroll), are well worth your download time. Available, of course, for a very limited time.
Kevin Lane Can Walk Through Walls - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
Kevin Lane, who has many mysterious powers, apparently also has the power to write and record a CD in a month's time. And you can have that CD for free courtesy of the man himself...
Hey, I uploaded mine and Jack [Logans]'s February challenge CD if anyone wants to check it out. It's called Handsome Devils. We wrote and recorded it during the month of February as part of the RPM challenge. It's kinda like the "write a novel on November" thing. We finished it with one day to spare! It was fun as hell and I'm kinda bummed it's over. http://www.sendspace.com/file/nyv4k7
I uploaded it as one long mp3 because some songs run together. Here's the tracklist:
01 You Will Do 02 Pickin' It Up 03 Flyin' Home 04 Then Again 05 Homemade Knife 06 Obstinate 07 Not Impressed I Guess 08 Spartan Accommodations 09 Frontal Lobe 10 You Just Let Go
Matt Lane played some drums on 4, 8, and 9, and Chris Grehan played some banjo on 8, guitar on 9. We had a blast making it, I hope you dig it!
