Happy Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras, y'all! I know it's not a big holiday to most people outside of New Orleans and a few other select cities, but all the same, hope y'all have a great one. At least go treat yourself to something awesome, like a good meal you wouldn't normally splurge for or something along those lines. Oh, and Home Of The Groove is of course the best source for Mardi Gras tunes. Enjoy.

Christmas Play In Athens

I really suck at checking our inbox. And every time I miss something, I swear I'm gonna get better at checking it... and I never do (sorry Strayhorn folks!). But I'm not entirely too late to mention this Christmas play being put on by reputable folks and with good material to back 'em...
Rose of Athens Theatre presents
Holiday Memories
December 6,7,8,13,14,15 at 7:30pm and December 9 & 16 at 5:30pm.

“It’s Fruitcake Weather!” Two of Truman Capote’s sweetest and most heartwarming stories of the holidays brought to life by Rose of Athens Theatre favorites and Bart King, popular Athens based singer-songwriter providing his live compositions on piano, throughout.

A rollicking, fun and tastefully sentimental play about an uncommon friendship, Holiday Memories is by Truman Capote and stage version by Russell Vandenbroucke. This play with music encompasses two short stories: A Thanksgiving Visitor and A Christmas Memory. It is wonderfully Southern and a perfect way to enjoy, embrace and celebrate the holidays with family and friends. Heartwarming holiday music provided by Bart King on piano underscores and adds beautiful color to this already delightful play.

Rose of Athens Theatre favorites, Lisa Mende (multiple roles), Ben Reed (Buddy), Allen Rowell (Truman) and Lisa Cesnik Ferguson (Sook) will perform in Holiday Memories and Rose of Athens Theatre core member Joelle Re Arp Dunham will direct this holiday treat. Newcoming performers for Holiday Memories are Dusty Drake (multiple roles), Kathleen Hogan (multiple roles) and Bart King (musician).

Dusty Drake has worked professionally in theatre since 2003, and in 2005 had a short play produced Off-Off-Broadway in New York City in 2005. Kathleen Hogan happily relocated to Athens, Georgia in the spring of 2007 after living and working as an actress in New York City for the last fifteen years – she is an exciting addition to Athens’ flourishing non-profit 501(c)(3) professional theatre.

One of the stated goals of Rose of Athens Theatre is to integrate Georgia music and musicians into all productions. Live music is featured in all Rose of Athens Theatre productions and it is one of the elements that define the style of Athens’ professional theatre. Holiday Memories is no exception. Musician Bart King is a perfect fit for Holiday Memories and Rose of Athens Theatre is thrilled to have him aboard for the holidays.

Donations of children’s books are welcomed at each performance and will be donated to Athens’ Sparrow’s Nest Annual Christmas Toy Drive and the national organization “Toys for Tots”. This play is recommended for 5th grade and older, but all ages are welcome.

Tickets: $15. Special rate of $10 for students and those under the age of 25.
Donations of children’s books to benefit Toys for Tots and Sparrow’s Nest Christmas Toy Drive are welcome!

Where: Quinn Hall at Memorial Park 293 Gran Ellen Drive Athens, Georgia 30606

Halloween Pics

Halloween was a blast, y'all. Great performances by ZZ Topless (who ruled) as well as the Shut-Ups featuring Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, The Big Bad Wolf, Paul Simon (yes, that's Bo Bedingfield as Chevy Chase), Dee-Lite, Huey Lewis The Bangles, Kenny Rogers, Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, that dude from Squeeze, ABBA, and lots others. The ABBA costume might've been my favorite of the night. Way to go Kevin, Anna, Lucas, and Courtney! Wish I'd gotten more pics, but luckily Mike White was there, so watch Deadly Designs for more.

Happy Secretary's Day, Administrative Professionals!

Feel like we'd be remiss in our duties if we didn't wish all y'all administrative folks a happy Secretary's Day. As we mention every year, there's only one song we know of written for the holiday. It's here.

Happy Mardi Gras!

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Mardi Gras. Might not mean a lot to a lot of y'all, but it means a lot where I'm from originally. As usual, your best place for free downloads is the fantastic NOLA music blog Home Of The Groove. They're more rare cuts than usual this year, which is kinda cool. If you really dig on some Mardi Gras music, this is by far the best collection. Anyway, do it up right, go get some Popeye's or Zatarain's or something and then drink a lot.
