Athens Musicians Can't Stand Being In Tune - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:17 AM | Permanent Link
Okay, I can't help but post this. It's a quote from a recent interview with the Modern Skirts from a publication in Savannah. To try to avoid Hannity-ing this, I'm posting as much of the relevant info around the quote as possible, putting my emphasis in bold (and providing the full name for info's sake and editing the one curse word for your work-safe viewing):
When asked if, a few years into their upwards trajectory, the band is finally feeling a bit of backlash in their local music scene, [bassist JoJo] Glidewell chuckles.
“Actually, the backlash has kind of subsided. It happened pretty much immediately! In Athens, there’s a lot of hardcore indie music, and among those folks, it’s considered selling out to tune your guitar (laughs). For something as palatable as we are, some folks would actually come up and mock us openly in the street. You know, like, ‘Look at that famous guy,’” he says.
“On the flip side, we’ve had people say, ‘I used to think you guys were bulls***, until I saw you play, and it turns out you’re really good (laughs).’ In reality, 100 miles outside Athens, we still often play to nobody.”
No, this is not an April Fool's Joke. In case you want to read the whole article, it's here. But I've snipped all the relevant info pertaining to the quote above. So, y'all indie rockers out there get to tunin'!
Barrie Buck Interview - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:03 AM | Permanent Link
Back in August Kenny Aguar did an interview with Barrie Buck to kind of celebrate the 20th anniversary of her and Jared Bailey opening the 40 Watt back up in what is now the Caledonia (first show - Pylon reunion... whole place was white supposedly, not the crowd, I mean there were white sheets and stuff covering the walls).
Anyway, it took me a while to notice this interview, but it's a really great one and speaks to how awesome Barrie is. Go read it.
Athens Magazine Hits The Music - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
I was tidying up the waiting area in my office yesterday, when I noticed that Athens Magazine's last issue featured folks I know on the cover - again, something no one had let me know. Turns out, that's their AthFest issue. Don Chambers, Dan Nettles, Mamie Fike Simonds, Wendy Musick, William Tonks and Eric Harris contribute to this sort of group interview about the scene that is Athens. Broad and a bit vague, but a good read nonetheless. What a weird supergroup that would be.

Thanks to Andy for forwarding over the link to this transcript of a long-lost Pitchfork interview with Jeffrey Mangum from 2002. Sheds a bit of light on where he was post-Aeroplane and absolutely no light on where he's been lately. Dancing With The Stars next season? We'll see.
The Onion & A McBrayer - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:06 AM | Permanent Link
Jack McBrayer, brother of local comedy genius Pete McBrayer, was recently interviewed by the Onion. You might recognize Jack from his part in Talladega Nights or in the show 30 Rock. Hopefully, Pete'll stop by and tell us stuff his brother failed to mention in the interview.
