Athens photographer / real estate mogul Daniel Peiken shared recent pics with us from the Summerbirds In the Cellar / Maserati / the Good Ship @ the 40 Watt show on 6/28/08 and from the Harvey Milk / Tenement Hall @ the 40 Watt show on 6/27/08.
Heads up on two new Athens Music related things: 1) There's a new blog called Athens Music Express, which its author describes as "self-indulgent", but then again, so are we. and 2) There's a new, slick-looking free music magazine out there called Athens Blur. The debut issue has the Dropkick Murphys on the cover and a bunch of non-Athens stuff, so that's kinda weird, but on the other had it does have a story on AthFest and the Classic City Rollergirls, mentions Dead Confederate, and apparently hearts Pride Parade, so maybe it'll come around to be all Athens one day. Who knows? I guess that's kinda hard to sell more ads for, though.
It's..........Lazy Student! - posted by Lazy Student @ 8:47 AM | Permanent Link
Howdy all,
Due to my titular laziness (and the fact that it is the last week of the semester before finals) it has taken me a couple of days to get around to this, my first post on The Day Jobs. I'm really looking forward to helping our government crash our economy by reducing the work production of you, our readers. So without further ado:
Firstly, check out the new logo for the UK's "Office of Governmental Commerce" over there on the right. I'll leave it as an exercise for our readers to figure out whats so funny about it.
Second, we all love the A-Team right? If you don't you probably should just get back to filling out those TPS reports. If you are a true American, though, here is the first episode of "Bring Back the A-Team." Possibly the best TV since the A-Team was taken off the air.
Spoiler: He does get the Mr. T interview and it is well worth the wait!
Halloween Pics - posted by Mail Clerk @ 10:35 AM | Permanent Link
Halloween was a blast, y'all. Great performances by ZZ Topless (who ruled) as well as the Shut-Ups featuring Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, The Big Bad Wolf, Paul Simon (yes, that's Bo Bedingfield as Chevy Chase), Dee-Lite, Huey Lewis The Bangles, Kenny Rogers, Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, that dude from Squeeze, ABBA, and lots others. The ABBA costume might've been my favorite of the night. Way to go Kevin, Anna, Lucas, and Courtney! Wish I'd gotten more pics, but luckily Mike White was there, so watch Deadly Designs for more.
McD & Jay Gonzalez - posted by Mail Clerk @ 10:07 AM | Permanent Link
Thanks to Vet Pharmacist for sending over a camera phone pic of an ultra-rare appearance by none other than Michael McDonald at last night's performance by Jay Gonzalez over at Kingpin's. As you may know, McD sometimes shows up to perform short sets with local musicians. Last night's set included "What A Fool Believes", "Captain Jack" and "Quinn The Eskimo". Who knew McD was involved in the latter two?
Pylon Strikes Again - posted by Mail Clerk @ 3:36 AM | Permanent Link
The answer to yesterday's question was of course that the last time we were featured in Pitchfork was when we covered Pylon's reunion show at Little Kings. Dunno whether it was the air of "secrecy" or the fact that they hadn't played in a long time (prolly a bit of both) but the hip came out in droves to see Pylon rock Little Kings again last night. Even ol' Sean Lennon dropped by.
Anyway, I still can't hear right. It was a blast. They also re-affirmed that the reissue of Gyrate "Plus" (with Cool/Dub single and possible other extra tracks included) will happen this fall on DFA Records.
The Day Jobs is a group blog for those who are productively lazy. Each blogger lives, works, and plays in Athens. Expect commentary on music, arts, office culture, television, and many other forms of tomfoolery.
