Ham1 is wisely offering their new album, The Underground Stream, as a free download on their website at the moment. They did the same with the last one, which is still available there, and that's when I first gave them a listen. You can download (or stream) one track at a time, or grab the whole thing at once. Thanks guys!
In other news, there's some mention of Athens & R.E.M. in this Matthew Sweet article.
Drive-By Truckers announce their "Rock and Roll Means Well" joint fall tour with The Hold Steady.
And, though it's not local news, I like this quote from Morrissey about Warner releasing a dvd of his music without his permission or involvement.
"The slapdash release of Morrissey Live at the Hollywood Bowl is done by Warner without any consultation to me whatsoever, and is in breach of their terms as laid out by themselves in an agreement made for the film between Warner and my ex-manager. Being Warner, predictably the sleeve art is appalling. It is the work of cash-hounds, and I urge people NOT to buy it. I am not signed to Warner, and no royalties from this DVD will come to me. Please spend your money elsewhere."

A TDJ EVENT!!! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
So, that big announcement I mentioned earlier in the week... As most of you well know, this is my last week blogging here at TDJ - second to last day in fact (I'm a nomad in Athens for 2 weeks thereafter). You can save all your tissues and tearful posts for tomorrow cause today I have some kickass news: the Caledonia is throwing the First (Annual?) TDJ Party, and you're all invited.
What's in it for you? The Arcs Pride Parade DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms before, in between, and after both sets It's on Saturday the 26th from 5-9 PM - mark your calendars! Cost: TBA (I forgot to ask - cheap, I'm sure.) Maybe food. (Anyone wanna cook? Robo - I'm looking your way.) It's been a great 4+ years and it's time to celebrate me finally getting out of the way so more qualified people can write about Athens here. If you read this site, please come say hey, even if you don't know me. Someone there will know who I am, and it will give me a sense of worth. Just let me rock out during the music, that's all I ask.
Thanks very much to Kevin Lane who used his super-powers to help organize this whole thing and to Kaya who did much of the same and to all the performers who agreed to play on short-ish notice. This show is gonna rule. Hope all y'all can make it.

Athens photographer / real estate mogul Daniel Peiken shared recent pics with us from the Summerbirds In the Cellar / Maserati / the Good Ship @ the 40 Watt show on 6/28/08 and from the Harvey Milk / Tenement Hall @ the 40 Watt show on 6/27/08.
Heads up on two new Athens Music related things: 1) There's a new blog called Athens Music Express, which its author describes as "self-indulgent", but then again, so are we. and 2) There's a new, slick-looking free music magazine out there called Athens Blur. The debut issue has the Dropkick Murphys on the cover and a bunch of non-Athens stuff, so that's kinda weird, but on the other had it does have a story on AthFest and the Classic City Rollergirls, mentions Dead Confederate, and apparently hearts Pride Parade, so maybe it'll come around to be all Athens one day. Who knows? I guess that's kinda hard to sell more ads for, though.
Most Disturbing Songs Ever, Part II - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:05 AM | Permanent Link
A year ago tomorrow, I started a very short list of the most disturbing songs ever. These were songs that were not outrightly provocative (i.e. death metal or Marilyn Manson or 2 Live Crew or whatever), but more subtley off-putting.
In short, people liked it. So, what do hacks like us do when provided with a moderate amount of positive feedback - re-hash the same thing with less dedication. Voila: More of the most disturbing songs ever:
Sample: Johnny: If i were a carpenter And you were a lady. Would you marry me anyway? Would you have my baby?
June: If you were a carpenter and i were a lady. I'd marry you anyway. I'd have your baby.
"Would you have my baby?"... that's the thing that really does it. Otherwise, it's a love song that basically asks, "If I were poor, would you still love me?" Fair question. But the proposition and subsequent affirmation of baby-making is just odd - there's something very primal in that statement. Granted, it's not as weird as when Method Man suggested to Missy that they should "go halves on a baby", but I think he was joking. These folks sound - and apparently were very much - serious about the prospect. And the whole world had to hear about it. Seriously, take a look at that picture... they were great musicians, but leaving the baby-making out of the spotlight might've made sense. Just sayin's, all.
Video with creepy intro featuring glimpse into homelife:
Sample: "Just the other night I thought I heard you cry Asking me to come And hold you in my arms I can hear your prayers Your burdens I will bear But first I need your hand Then forever can begin...
For you are not alone For I am here with you"
Color me cheap for going back to the well here, but let's face it: Michael Jackson softly singing "You are not alone, for I am here with you" creeps everyone out. No one relates this song to a man and a woman in love. No one. Everyone thinks about the same thing when this song comes on: Macaulay Culkin. As much as his record company strove to make Michael Jackson romantic, it was never meant to be. And this single helps highlight that ultimate failure. Oh, and the public wasn't exactly clamoring to see Lisa Marie Presley semi-nude-ish either.
The video really is the most disturbing part. Unfortunately, the Google powers-that-be won't allow it to be embedded. So, soak it up here (even if you only watch the first 5 seconds, it will be worth it, trust me).
Sample "She went away, she cut me like a knife Hello beautiful thing, maybe you could save my life In just a glance, down here on magic street Loves a fool's dance And I ain't got much sense, but I still got my feet
The girls in their summer clothes In the cool of the evening light The girls in their summer clothes, pass me by"
First thing's first: I dig the new Springsteen album. It's great. That being said, when an over-the-hill dude starts singing about "girls in their summer clothes", and it's accompanied by a photo of that man leering and dressed in an undershirt and being too old to have a soul patch (scratch that: no one should ever have a soul patch), there's only one thing that comes to mind in this day and age and that's stalking. Creepy, dirty stalking. Do I think Bruce is going all American Beauty on us? Hopefully not. But the song is what the song is. And Bruce, it's weird. Bonus points for working the name Shaniqua into the lyrics, though.
Bruce as a homeless beach bum stalking girls with a video camera:
Sample: "I'd probably be just as crazy about you If you were my own man Maybe next lifetime (maybe next lifetime) Possibly (possibly) Until then, Oh friend your secret is safe with me
Dont cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me Dont cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me Dont cha, dont cha Dont cha wish your girlfriend was raw like me Dont cha wish your girlfriend was fun like me Dont cha, dont cha"
According to Wikipedia, the Pussycat Dolls, "began as a dance troupe based in Los Angeles, was "re-cast" as a music group in 2003." To me, they've always seemed like desperate failed actresses stuck in behind-the-scenes positions (assistants, PR, talent reps, etc.) with a "why let all these young bitches get all the fame" attitude. So, they formed a group and used their connections to make a big single. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. In any case, that desperation and stop-at-nothing-to-get-public-attention attitude bleeds over into that song like nobody's business. It just reeks of a girl so desperate for affection from anyone that she'll sell everything she is to get it. Guess what's not attractive? Psychotic desperation. Also, some of them look like trannies.
Feel the desperation of being not famous in your late 20's/early 30's in Hollywood (NSFW):
Sample: "I don't know why I love you like I do After all these changes you put me through The sixteen candles burning on my wall Turning me into the biggest fool of them all
I wanna know Oh won't you tell me Am I in love to stay?
Take me to the river And wash me down Won't you cleanse my soul Put my feet on the ground"
In the commentary for the "Stop Making Sense" DVD, David Byrne says that this song seemed to combine the two disparate/strange elements of extreme religion and teenage sex. At first, I thought that Mr. Byrne was just being odd like always and that the song really didn't imply the latter element. In re-reading the lyrics, it kinda does. And those two things together equal disturbing. I don't have much more to add to the topic, and I'm sure y'all're all familiar with that song. Maybe this ruined it for you. Or maybe it made it better... weirdo.
Here's both versions: (Al Green)
(Talking Heads)
Now, for a final bonus, here's Hassi's nomination from last time for creepiest video: Lionel Richie's "Hello". He basically just stalks a blind girl through a high school. I never thought the guy who was once known for dancing on the ceiling would haunt my nightmares (thanks for the suggestion Chris!):
That's all I got for now (and likely ever). Let me know what I missed.

Well, this guy's done us the favor of uploading them in decent quality as full albums. Most are from CD, a couple from LP. Just do a search of the archives (or do an advanced Google search with "Nick Lowe" in that URL). The links/password are in the comments for each post.
Also, Flat Duo Jets fans will wanna search there as well.
UPDATE: Want to add the disclaimer that you should of course buy these albums if you like 'em when they're re-released.

Happy Mardi Gras, y'all! I know it's not a big holiday to most people outside of New Orleans and a few other select cities, but all the same, hope y'all have a great one. At least go treat yourself to something awesome, like a good meal you wouldn't normally splurge for or something along those lines. Oh, and Home Of The Groove is of course the best source for Mardi Gras tunes. Enjoy.
New, Free WVTS Covers Album - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
The fun-loving scamps in We Versus The Shark have come up with a cool project for 2008. No, it's not called "finish the damn new LP" (though they say that'll happen this Spring). It's a free covers album called MURMURMUR, released through Quote Unquote Records.
They're going to be releasing one song on the first of every month this year. The first is a cover of the song "Right Away" by Pattern Is Movement. Get it here. And then go back there at the first of every month. I sure as hell won't remember to remind y'all, but maybe Jeff'll drop by and tell us when they're up. I hope.
Oh, and while the album is free technically, a donation to the record company while you're there maybe helpful. I'm sure they don't have Radiohead money sitting around.

Your Reward For Slacking From AMdN / Wares For Sale - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:44 AM | Permanent Link
For those who don't read the comments, yesterday after I asked about people who had things to sell, Jeff from AMdN posted this little bit of info:
We sell lotsa local music stuff over at athensmusic.net. 10% off when you use the code TDJ on checkout as a loyal reader of The Day Jobs.
Oh, and you can pick up items in our office in the Fred Building on College Ave. & pay no shipping.
Seriously? It's like you're getting rewarded for slacking at work. Big ups to AMdN.
Also, our pal Jeff Owens, in apparent direct competition to Your Bird Brain, also has shirts for sale though they're less child friendly and more robot-obsessed.
And Gordon is selling Christmas kisses for $10 a pop.
New Eskimos Record - For Free - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:33 AM | Permanent Link
So, the new record from the Eskimos, who haven't played live in forever but who were a staple in Athens several years back have decided to release their new album online for free (and have placed several CD-R versions in records stores around town as well, also free). Not sure how long this has been available because even though we're friends with some of those folks, they decided to let us find out through the friggin' Flagpole. Seriously bands, especially those who comment here and/or are people we know personally - we will print legitimate news and not just rumors and opinion if you send it. We do sometimes check our e-mail box. Not a lot, but sometimes.
Anyway, I digress. Long story short, the record's called Kola and you can get it here. I can't tell you if it's any good because I haven't heard it yet.
The Boss - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:50 AM | Permanent Link
Since I've been rockin' with the Boss lately (part of my iPod's recent apparent hostile takeover by a Clear Channel classic rock station), I thought I'd post I Hate Music's "How To Write A Bruce Springsteen Song..." It's done in choose-your-own-adventure style and would have been very accurate through 2002 when it was written (pre-E Street Band reunion).
Also, Stiller does a great Springsteen:
I can't find "Bruce Springsteen Makes An Answering Machine Message Tape" anywhere, but that one's funny too. Oh, and if you've never seen the Puff Daddy Fanatic with Stiller and Jack Black, y'oughta.

Happy Secretary's Day, Administrative Professionals! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:48 AM | Permanent Link
Feel like we'd be remiss in our duties if we didn't wish all y'all administrative folks a happy Secretary's Day. As we mention every year, there's only one song we know of written for the holiday. It's here.
Shoorah! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:02 AM | Permanent Link
After I begged him to do a post about it, Dan over at Home Of The Groove wrote a bit about the history of the word "Shoorah" (or "Shoo-Ra") in New Orleans music. Bottom line, nobody really knows what it means, but it's been the inspiration for several great songs. My favorite is by Allen Toussaint. His version, as well as the cover by Betty Wright (scroll), are well worth your download time. Available, of course, for a very limited time.
Def Leppard Lyrics - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
I remember a while back at a Folk Yous show that there was some discussion between the performers and some audience members as to whether the dumbest song ever was "Cherry Pie" or "Pour Some Sugar On Me". It was not until this weekend, when I heard an unbelievable amount of hair metal (Sirius in friend's car + road trip) that I have say that Def Leppard in fact wins not only for that song, but for their entire catalog. I mean, the songs actually make no sense whatsoever. Much like the band's name. Guess we were forewarned. But at least you can waste time at work reading through them years later. Cause it's funny.
R.E.M. Hall Of Fame, Etc. - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:02 AM | Permanent Link

Vedder Intro / Acceptance Part 1
Acceptance Part 2
Acceptance Part 3
"Begin The Begin"
"Gardening At Night"
"Man On The Moon"
"I Wanna Be Your Dog"
And just for kicks, here's some vid (don't get excited, it's just lyrics put up on screen) for their new cover version of John Lennon's "#9 Dream" in poor, real audio style sound. You can get it at iTunes. Proceeds benefit Darfur relief efforts:
Pride Parade - posted by Mail Clerk @ 7:49 AM | Permanent Link
Finally making an imprint in the Internets is Pride Parade - the new group formed with former members of Brown Frown, Polemic, Annaray, and a few other bands I'm sure. Basically, formed from the staff of The Max Canada. There's stuff up on their MySpace page now, but none of it has a title. Should appeal to folks who like Brown Frown and Dark Meat and the heavier kinda stuff. If not, you probably stopped reading this post a few sentences ago. EP and/or LP forthcoming as well. Shows soon (March or early April). That's all the news I got on that front.
Kevin Lane Can Walk Through Walls - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
Kevin Lane, who has many mysterious powers, apparently also has the power to write and record a CD in a month's time. And you can have that CD for free courtesy of the man himself...
Hey, I uploaded mine and Jack [Logans]'s February challenge CD if anyone wants to check it out. It's called Handsome Devils. We wrote and recorded it during the month of February as part of the RPM challenge. It's kinda like the "write a novel on November" thing. We finished it with one day to spare! It was fun as hell and I'm kinda bummed it's over. http://www.sendspace.com/file/nyv4k7
I uploaded it as one long mp3 because some songs run together. Here's the tracklist:
01 You Will Do 02 Pickin' It Up 03 Flyin' Home 04 Then Again 05 Homemade Knife 06 Obstinate 07 Not Impressed I Guess 08 Spartan Accommodations 09 Frontal Lobe 10 You Just Let Go
Matt Lane played some drums on 4, 8, and 9, and Chris Grehan played some banjo on 8, guitar on 9. We had a blast making it, I hope you dig it!
Also as commented yesterday, Karate Media's been working on a special "record player" for Jay Gonzalez's (Nutria) side project, The Inflatable Orchestra. Check it out here (or streaming for faster load time).
