Billy, Don't Be a Hero

The Glands are featured in the current SI. Former UGA Placekicker, Billy Bennett, takes SI writers on a small tour of Athens... including shopping for Glands CD's and watching Athenian Dan Nolte's band, Timber, at the 'donia (you might not know who Nolte is, but some of the dayjobbers used to work with him... that's why I mention his name).

Anyways... give it a read...

Reappearing Ghostmeat

You can now download songs from out-of-print Ghostmeat releases... Including songs from Drive By Truckers, The Lures, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, and several others.

The fellas at Ghostmeat have even offered to burn copies of some of their out of print releases and mail 'em to you...

Patterson Hood Atlanta Show Cancellation

In case anyone had planned on driving to the ATL tomorrow, this update just came in from Jenn Bryant:

"Patterson wanted me to let everyone know that he's NOT playing a solo show at The Earl in Atlanta Friday due to a scheduling conflict with DBT. He asked that I convey his regrets about it all, and promises to reschedule ASAP. Jason had to cancel his Friday solo gig as well, but expect that show to also be rescheduled."

Tis the season for cancellations, it seems. Just to avoid any confusion: the show tonight at Nuci's is definitely still happening.

P.S. Truckers fans don't despair - Nine Bullets has updated!

Church & State

Missing the Clinton years? Wanting to mock someone missing the Clinton years? Catholic and blasphemous? Check out these products.

(Found via AndrewSullivan.com. As a sidenote, he gave a really wonderful speech last night making the case for gay marriage. His original "Conservative Case For Gay Marriage" earned him a lot of praise and a lot of criticism from all angles - gay and straight, conservative and liberal - when it was originally published in 1989. Seems to matter even more now.)

Full Housed

T-Shirt Hell, probably the best place ever to buy offensive T-Shirts (and yes, before you ask, they do have baby sizes), is under attack from the Olsen Twins because of this shirt. Since it's a pay story, and the actual T-shirt is NOT WORK SAFE, here's the story in brief (from AIM's Gossip Column):

A raunchy t-shirt site tshirthell.com has struck a cord with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. For $18.00 you can purchase a shirt that says "I F*^#@& the Olsen Twins Before They Were Famous." Pagesix.com reports that DualStar has issued a cease-and-desist order to the site's owner, Gary Cohen. ... He has no plans to comply and even said he'd love to go to court if it means he'd get to meet the girls.

You go, Gary. Also, I can't let this story go without mentioning Brown Frown, whose fantastic links section first introduced me to T-Shirt Hell.

Tonight In Athens

Wow, you could conceivably do nothing but listen to music tonight...

At 6PM, if you wander over to School Kids Records (on Clayton Street, downtown), you can see the Japancakes play a very rare in-store performance.

Then, at 8PM The Fairburn Royals play WUOG's Live In The Lobby (90.5 FM).

Finally, there are two great nighttime shows. We probably don't even have to mention that Patterson Hood, currently in the midst of the Truckers' Dirty South Tour, will be playing an acoustic benefit show tonight at/for Nuci's Space. Don Chambers, one of our favorites, will be playing as well (which means the two will likely perform several, if not all, of their songs together). The cost is $10, and obviously it goes to the Space. This show will sell out.

May I also suggest seeing Rob Veal play at Lunch Paper tonight. A former Dashboard Savior, he plays "simply, honest" rock music that's an incredible joy to see/hear. His live performances are increasingly rare, so it's a good chance to see something that doesn't happen often (twice in one day if you see the 'cakes). Also, it's Twain's last night in their current lineup.

Shown Up

Well, I'm sure you've all read about it by now, but it's official: Daily Show viewers aren't just a bunch of stoned slackers. They're (We're) politically aware stoned slackers. Take that, O'Reilly.

(Thanks to Sarah for the link.)

Macha Do About Something

As previously mentioned, Josh McKay has reformed Macha into a five-piece band for touring purposes. Well they've practiced, and now they're hitting the road. AthensMusic.com has the story as well as tour dates (includes on Atlanta stop - so far nothing in Athens, but I'm sure it'll happen). Good to see it finally coming together.

Tonight In Athens

Firstly, the final appearance for Guided By Voices in Athens has been postponed due to a death in the family. The show will be rescheduled. For more information, please see the 40 Watt website.

As an alternative activity, you can see Andrew Sullivan wax political at UGA. The event takes place at Georgia Hall (in the Tate Student Center) at 7:30 PM. It's free to students and $2 for non-students. We're not usually advocates of any particular political views (publicly anyway), but this is kinda a cool opportunity. Plus, he's pretty much tops in the blogging world (he has one of the most-read blogs in the world). There's a tiny bit more info here.

And if politics isn't your game, there's no less than THREE 80's dance nights happening simultaneously this evening. Don't even know what to say about that.

More On John Cale...

For those wondering more about John Cale's post-VU career, Hillary's sent us some great links...

"Fear" can be heard here (it's the 10th song).

"Paris 1919" can be heard here (can't get directly to it; just have to click on "listen to this show" and skip to a little over an hour into it - like, a hour and four or five minutes).

Here's his cover of "Hallelujah." It's the first song.

You can listen to samples from _Fragments of a Rainy Season_ (maybe my favorite album, and it's live) at Amazon.

Thanks, Hillary!

Athens Music News

For those who haven't heard already, the 40 Watt has just announced that legendary Velvet Undergroundian John Cale is playing Athens on October 18th. Tickets are $20 and will be on sale "soon".

Patton On The Move

Fresh off taping a (mostly) new comedy special, Patton Oswalt is currently on a west-coast comedy tour produced by Chunklet editor and former Athenian Henry Owings. There's a camera crew on board, so expect a documentary of the events sooner or later. And though busy, Patton's still updating his online diary almost daily with no lack of funny. A few of my recent favorites include...

"Every successful endeavor should end with a New York sunset and a grilled cheese sandwich eaten while you watch a transvestite scream at a pile of newspapers."
--
"...nothing could prepare me for the doom-soaked atmosphere of our Seattle residential hotel, which I'm going to call the James Whitmore Hangs Himself In THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION Suites. ... And how about my bed, made lumpy by the dozens of teenage hookers who fought for their lives as a trucker on black beauties tried to strangle them. Oh, and lost. I left that part out."
--
"What I've been thinking is this: I now have objective evidence that Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, and anyone else on a reality show, is in fact a worthless, empty shitbag full of howling winds and crying children wandering through ruins. Being observed 24/7 is soul-killing. I really had no idea it'd be this much of a drag.

But to want to do it continuously, season after season, year after year of your life, bespeaks a narcissism with an undertow that not even light and information can escape. 90% of life is boring, unmemorable, and worthy of being consigned to oblivion. The sad fact is we're wasting more and more of our free time watching other people's worthless 90%.

Scotch, fast!"

Click here to read more (and check out that Paris link - it's funny and more work-safe than these quotes which you've already read).

How Do You Spell D-i-s-a-s-t-e-r?

Balloonist and part-time billionaire playboy Richard Branson, whose Virgin company has given us such achievements as Courtney Love and Paula Abdul in the past, has teamed up with the SpaceShipOne team in a plan to offer private space flights starting three years from now. Oh, and there'll be an 'orbital hotel' eventually as well.

Tonight In Athens

David Barbe & The Quick Hooks play their second of four weekly outings at the Caledonia. They're all supposed to be outdoor shows, but given the weather outlook, this one maybe inside. Last week's show was a really great evening. Calm, cool, and relaxing - as all his other shows there have been. No word on any accompanying acts/guests tonight, but he always brings good folks out. Highly recommended especially because this is David's birthday week.

This Weekend In Athens

It's a weekend full of really great causes, so go enjoy some entertainment and reach deep when it comes time...

FRI: Strangely enough, this weekend begins with a parade by New Orleans' Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It starts at the Arch at 4:30 and proceeds to School Kids Records (yes, a whole block and a half), where the band will play a few more songs. For more info, see AthensMusic.com's article on it (info comes from Jomo Entertainment).

Then tonight at the 40 Watt is the "The Cure vs. The Smiths" benefit show for Amy Dykes. Pretty self-explanatory, but it features a Cure cover band, a Smiths cover band, I Am The World Trade Center (their first appearance in a while), and the group's alter-ego, DJ Twin Powers, spinning music. Should be a dance-able good time, and even if not, it's a great cause. Read this Banner article or this Flagpole article for more info.

SAT: For the early-risers out there, you have two wonderful options open to you - depending on your favorite mode of transport. Firstly, Nuci's Space's "Space Race" (a 5K walk/run around UGA's campus) takes place at 9AM. The event helps raise money for Nuci's Space's projects.

For bicycling enthusiasts, the main event of the Tour de Sprawl takes place at the same time, starting at College Square. The tour helps raise money for Bike Athens - which helps fight off sprawl and make bike lanes, etc. For more on that event, including a list of stops and speakers on the tour, see this page.

That afternoon, Nuci's Space will host its fourth anniversary party from 2-11 PM. A variety of bands are playing and the event is free (though, may I suggest you make a donation). Click either of those links for more details and don't forget about their charity rock auction, which lasts through the 30th.

Also that evening, Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars play music based on the poetry of Robert Burns at the Go Bar (hopefully outside). Starts at 9PM.

Dreamed About Killing You Again Last Night

Went to a big rock show last night... Wilco at the Fox Theatre. I haven't been to the Fox since I was a wee lad...

Anyways, it's really amazing how much better of a live band they are as a 6-piece than the 4-piece lineup that performed at the Tabernacle last summer. It's almost unfair to give Tweedy's songs to musicians like Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche. It's sorta like saying, "Hey '27 Yankees, how'd you like to add Barry Bonds to your lineup?"

Saw some Athenians there... including Bush-lovin' Jeff Clark. Wonder what he thought of all the liberal talk coming from the stage...

Jeff Clark, are you a dayjobber (don't worry, we don't require our readers to hold real jobs)? What'd you think?

Word On The Street (East 10th Street - NY)

According to Pumpernickel, Inc.'s website, there is a "DVD with extras" on the way for Peter Sillen's wonderful short documentary Speed Racer: Welcome to the World of Vic Chesnutt. Someone I've spoken with recently mentioned that the extra footage may actually be longer than the film itself (35 minutes).

Peter Sillen, of course, has done several other films, including Benjamin Smoke, which is amazing as well.

Meanwhile, word also has it that Vic is heading to L.A. very soon to record his new album and that Liz Durrett will be there as well. Can't wait to hear it. (Thanks to Biking Enthusiast for this bit of info.)

...In Bed!

The Weird Fortune Cookie Collection offers a glimpse of, well... just that.

Around The Sun In Your Ears

Although the listening party is still a coupla' weeks away, AthensMusic.com has announced that you can hear all of R.E.M.'s "Around The Sun" on myspace.com (for a limited time). For those wondering about the listening party, you can read more about it at the aforementioned Banner article and at AthensMusic.net (where you can also buy tix).

Also, for those who haven't seen it, AthensMusic.com also shows you where to download the "Leaving New York" video.

Tonight In Athens

Tour de Sprawl continues. Here's what Flagpole says about tonight's events:

"At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 in the UGA Chapel on Old Campus the Tour's keynote speaker, Walter Brown, of Green Street Properties, talks about building livable communities. Brown is an alumnus of Southface who previously renovated low- to moderate-income housing for the state government and has studied business, architecture, and community development at UGA, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State University. He is presently involved in building Glenwood Park, an intown Atlanta redevelopment project that will include public squares, homes, apartments, stores and parks as part of "a loveable, walkable neighborhood" near Zoo Atlanta. His talk, which is free of charge, focuses on "the implementation of new urbanist principles, green building techniques and stormwater management." Following Brown's talk there is a free dessert reception at 8:30 p.m. in nearby Founders' Garden adjacent to Lumpkin Street."

For more info, of course, see the schedule of events and speakers.

Tour de Sustainability

Can't believe I forgot to mention the kick-off of Tour de Sprawl. Sorry for the late update, but it starts tonight. Here's what Flagpole says about tonight's event:

"Tour de Sustainability" kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 22 with a multi-media Green Home Workshop at 7 p.m. in the "Little Kings" space On Hancock at Hull St. (the cool brick building with all the windows at the end of the Manhattan block). Dennis Creech - a founder of Atlanta's independent Southface Energy Institute - shows practical ways of making homes more energy-efficient. Now in its 26th year, Southface has gained national recognition for its workshops and conferences on energy-saving building design and its midtown Atlanta demonstration center. With luck, that lecture will be immediately followed by the premiere of a short documentary video about last year's Tour de Sprawl, shot by Andrew Permar of UGA's journalism school. The film will include historic photos of Athens streetcars and downtown scenes. It is being edited at press time but is "coming together really great," according to Brent Buice of BikeAthens.

We'll be posting more, but see this page in the meantime for the complete schedule.

Space Race

Hey y'all, Nuci's Space is having a series of cool events for a fundraising week right now (centered around their 4th anniversary party this weekend - more on that later). You can sign up now for the Space Race - a 5K walk/run around UGA's campus this Saturday morning. Or you can check out their charity rock auction. Or, as always, you can simply make a donation or volunteer your time.

They've done a lot for Athens' music in the past and have some really cool stuff in store for the future, so we'd like to suggest helping them out all you can (and if you have a website, please post about all this and help spread the word).

Tonight In Athens

63 Crayons plays at Caledonia, and of course, no matter how much some may want to, you can't ignore it when The Melvins come to your town (they're at the 40 Watt tonight).

Peace Plane

Yeah, you knew we had to put the Cat Stevens story up. There's a million things funny about this. The interrogation, to me, has to be the best part. Just imagining FBI agents furiously questioning Cat Stevens is priceless. (Peacenik my ass.)

Athens Around The Web

For those who hadn't read it already, Pitchfork has news of upcoming projects for former Athenians The Mendoza Line including work on a film soundtrack.

Also, a bit of Truckers-related news up on Large-Hearted Boy today concerning Jason Isbell's upcoming solo album (though most die-hards prolly already know about it).

Finally, for those who haven't read about it but still care, The Banner has put up a story containing details on the listening party for R.E.M.'s upcoming release, "Around The Sun".

Anyways, Popmatters.com has a nice little review of the show... go check it out.

Build Your Own Presidential Speech

Use this handy tool to build your own Presidential speech. It's a pretty cool little tool.

Gonna Find A Use For Every Last One...

For those who missed the Truckers on Conan the other night, you can see that performance plus some recent Good Day Atlanta footage at a new fan site: Nine Bullets. The site is being put together by several folks from the DBT camp including uber-taper Sloan Simpson who had this to say:

"It's a DBT fan-site that focuses on setlists and recording info. The goal is to have a comprehensive database of dates, venues, setlists, reviews, photos, ticket stubs, poster art, recording info, video clips, etc."

Sounds like an daunting task given the amount of available material (they've no lack of coverage), but I'm glad someone's doing it. We'll post again in the future to let y'all know when the site's fully up and running and/or when there's updates.

(Thanks to Printmaker and DVDGuy for the link and video, respectively.)

UPDATE: The above quote is actually attributed to DVDGuy, and though Sloan is not officially involved with the site's creation, I'm sure he's contributed - and will continue to - on some level (he's sort of an expert here). Sorry for the original, shoddy info.

Technical Documentation Weirdness

The Hall of Technical Documentation Weirdness offers up scans of some of the strangest sets of instructions, warnings, and accompanying illustrations. You'll relate if you've ever put together any IKEA products. One of my favorites so far is this bit of Engrish-esque signage.

Tonight In Athens

Hope everyone's alright after the weather got its hurricane on; now back to a new week...

Tonight you can see David Barbe and Kevn Kinney play at the Caledonia. Flagpole says David Barbe's playing a solo set, which would be very unique and cool to see if it's true. It's an early show (9 PM), so make sure you're there in time. And yes, this is the first in a month-long series of outdoor shows David's doing at the Caledonia. Last year, they were always great, and really varied, so I recommend y'all attend all that you can.

And if you've got time afterwards, I recommend checking out Venice Is Sinking at Tasty World. I saw them this weekend, and they were impressive.

This Weekend In Athens

Assuming everywhere has power, this weekend has a pair of artists who just released great CD's...

FRI: Japancakes just released their new album, "Waking Hours". They have several shows on the way, but their big return to the stage is tonight at the Morton as part of Athens 441 (it'll be simulcast on at least one of Athens' NPR stations - 91.7 & 97.9). The show includes several other bands and starts/ends early (8-11:30). For more info, see articles by AthensMusic.net, The Banner, and Flagpole.

SAT: Finally, finally, finally We Vs. The Shark will officially release their new album, "Ruin Everything!". The oft-delayed release party will be at Nuci's Space and is only $3. Highly recommended (for that price, how can you lose?). For more information, see their article in this week's Flagpole.

Bill O'Reilly Takes Pilates

I have it from a reliable source that Mr. O'Reilly is a pilates nut. A friend's cousin is his pilates instructor.

Be sure to e-mail him and tell him that he's a pussy.

If you picked up a Creative Loafing last week, you've already seen this:

Make sure to check out the accompanying story at Corey Anderson: American Idle too.

How Could You Be Undecided?

Check out this hilarious editorial by Larry David about undecided voters.

He also discusses another type of voter, the "unlikely voter"... Mail Clerk can tell you all about this type...

Calling 'Shotgun'

While I realize that linking to the Onion is somewhat as redundant as linking to Google, the editorial on calling 'shotgun' from this week's issue is really one of the funniest things they've written in a while.

Yearbook Confidential

Thanks to Bored for sending us this link to a page exploring the wonderful world of senior photos. Much like our most recent favorite, the rock n' roll hall of shame, there's plenty of pictures and no shortage of funny. Also, it reminded me of this recent Onion article.

Tonight In Athens (And Beyond)

It's not often that I recommend out-of-towners, but Atlanta's Psyche Origami really is a great act to catch live. Two DJ's, One MC, whole lotta awesome hip-hop. They play Tasty World tonight with another Atlanta hip-hop act, Minamina Goodsong. Read more about it in this week's Flagpole.

But if you're content to stay in and enjoy the hurricane, given that the cable holds up, don't forget that the Drive-By Truckers play Conan O'Brien tonight.

I Wanna Be Sedated

You've prolly heard the news about Johnny Ramone.

What you haven't heard is Robo-Dave's take:

thats 3 ramones died since 2001, only tommy is alive now. He's number is coming up soon.

But anyway, this is a outtake from the news article online I read about it saying who was with him when he died. this has got to be the weirdest group of folks here. They must have been filming one of those surreal life shows where he died. Check it out:

"Along with his wife, Linda Cummings, Johnny Ramone was surrounded at his death by friends, including Pearl Jam rocker Eddie Vedder, singer Rob Zombie and others. Other friends who gathered at his Los Angeles home included Lisa Marie Presley, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo and Talia Shire"

Aside from his wife, eddie vedder, rob zombie, lisa marie presley, pete yorn, vincent gallo, and talia shire? Elvis's daughter and Adrian from Rocky were there when johnny died. And eddie vedder was making fucking tea or some shit, while Rob Zombie was administering Johnny's last rites. Pete Yorn was there singing a song in the background while Vincent Gallo was filming the entire thing. Lisa Marie was trying to sing harmony with Pete, but she couldn't find her key cause she's tone deaf and she sucks. Adrian..uh...I....mean Talia Shire was yelling "I love you Rocky! I love you Rocky!" Its like Johnny Ramone invited this eclectic group of folks to his death bed to act out some twisted play that he had in mind. Or Maybe......the play was a scene from Johnny's favorite movie, Rocky part 1.

The final fight scene in part one. Lisa Marie was playing apollo creed. Johnny was Rocky. Mick, rocky's trainer was Eddie Vedder. Rob Zombie was apollo's trainer. Vincent Gallo was Pauly "KILL EM ROCK!". And Talia shire of course played Adrian. And right before Johnny died, his last words were "YO ADRIAN.......!"

Athens Music News

Just a heads up that AthensMusic.net has updated their news section with info on the Athens Cloud, DJ Danger Mouse, Dodd Ferrelle, Slackdaddy, and the string of recent break-ups (check out that Community Chaos picture - camera malfunction or ghosts of punk-rock shows past?). They don't update often enough for my tastes, but when they do there's always cool news that somehow everyone else seems to have missed.

Birthdays Abound

Our good friend Sarah stares down death again today - not in the form of cancer, but in it's raw, natural form: aging. She turns the ripe old age of 26, so go check out her (very amusing) blog and wish her well. Happy Birthday, Sarah!

That's not the only birthday in the Athens blogosphere either. Cause Hillary Brown is also celebrating age today. I'm sure you're all gonna go there anyway, but stop by Antidisingenuousmentarianism to give her good tidings.

Also, happy recent birthday to Help Desk Tech (FKA "No Job").

Virgos kick ass.

Mystery Science Emo Theater

Today's treat... Bright Eyes "Pull My Hair"

Is the passion all gone?
Or is it still newly wed?

dude, it's totally newly wednesday...

If all this heat is doing is making us stick to the bed

that's not the heat doing that...

Then there is no life to revive.
But if the hunger is still there, hidden somewhere inside
Covered up by the boredom we've been trying to hide

shall i try to hide my boredom?

Then dig it up and devour
And it will be more like a song
And less like its math

math??? did someone say math??? as in math rock? math rock = emo?

If you pull on my hair, and bite me like that

and mess up that conor hair???

And the truth is that i can't hardly wait
And i don't care if we stay up too late
Don't answer the phone
Don't answer the phone

hello...

And it will be more like a song and less like its math

math again! awesome!

If you pull on my hair and bite me like that
And the truth is that i can't hardly wait

nor I, sad one. nor I.

It itches so bad that i can't concentrate
Don't answer the phone
Don't answer the phone

hello...

And it will be more like a song and less like its math

awesome!

If you pull on hair and bite me like that.

Don't touch the hair!

Break the Rules

Inspired by the band photo hall of shame, Financial Guru sent me what might be the all-time best band photo in history...

Japancakes Return

Japancakes' newest album, Waking Hours, comes out today on WARM. It's been a while since we've heard from Eric Berg and company, so it should be interesting to hear what things sounds like. Supposedly, it's a bit of a 'return to earlier form' - more simplistic than The Sleepy Strange, for instance. If your real audio player works (mine does not), you can listen to it or buy it here. Look for their return to the stage Friday night at the Morton (more on that later).

The Limited Edition Milosevic Stamp?

Stamps.com seemed like a cool idea - order your own actual U.S. stamps featuring pictures you send in. Sure, it would make the USPS lotsa money. Only one problem: stamps are legal tender, and therefore government property, so you can't have just any old picture on them. The Smoking Gun decided to test it out to see what you could put by them. The results: hilarious.

Dark Knighted

At Robo's behest, thought we should mention yesterday's weird news. Guess it's one way to prove you're definitely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, steady enough to handle parenthood.

Advertising Done Right

Since we were so down on advertising yesterday, thought I'd post this bit of truth-in-advertising, which I found at Daily Foo. Can't find the original source, but it came from ApeChild.com - which seems pretty entertaining as well.

Fully-Integrated Concert Review

Vic Chesnutt and Liz Durrett
40 Watt - 9/11/04

Though the night was plagued with the usual problem of too much chatter (notorious at the Watt for quieter acts), seeing these two performers is never a let-down.

Liz played a somber set, as was expected, with Tina Chesnutt on bass and Vic on drums (yes, drums). Her songs are understated, often with no discernible chorus, but always sung with conviction and heart and with her amazing voice that carried itself about the crowd. Though I can't seem to track down a title or release date, her material will undoubtedly fit quite nicely with her WARM label mates (if that gives you a clue as to the sound). (After the show, Vic jokingly said her album was titled "I Owe It All To My Uncle".)

Vic started the show off with Liz on bass and Tina on drums, then slowly added players until the stage was quite full. The line-up eventually included members of The Good Ship, Audition with Max Reinhardt, Porn Orchard, The Sunshine Fix, and Hayride (amongst others). So, the stage brimming with talent, Vic launched into some newer material. One song (don't know the title - possibly "Keep On Keeping On"?), which Computer Support says was "worth the price of admission by itself", was particularly amazing. Another highlight for me was getting to hear "Elberton Fair" played live - before which Vic suggested folks go drink a pint of Guinness "for Seawright".

As was to be expected, it was a great night of music. Fortunately, Mr. Sloan Simpson (super-taper extraordinaire) got recordings of the night's performances from two different sources, and the mix sounds incredible. You can see the setlist and download Vic's entire show here. I highly recommend that you do. If Liz's set gets uploaded, I'll update this post, but for now, see her new site for a track from an older show.

(As always, this is a limited time download, and it requires BitTorrent, which if you don't have it, is worth downloading as well. Our thanks to Printmaker and Senior Secretary for the link and pics, respectively.)

Follow The Trend To Its Natural End...

"It's not going to fit into the standard garage," said Mark Oberle, a spokesman for Navistar, based in Warrenville, Ill., outside Chicago. "We can see it a as a vehicle for business people who want to make distinct impression. For personal use, it's for people who want to make a statement."

I can think of a few statements and impressions it makes.

Generate Your Heart Out

Communications From Elsewhere offers up several unique text generators (see the sidebar). My favorite is the Postmodernism Generator, which produces random, unique mini-essays on postmodern theory that are absolutely meaningless (much like their real-life counterparts). Liberal arts students are sure to appreciate it (hell, you might could even pass it off as real). Other generators include Adolescent Poetry and SubGenius Brag. Go ahead, nerd it up.

Tonight In Athens

Though nothing in cyberspace confirms it, Flagpole says Donkey Punch, Ben Mize, Scurvy, and Dirty Sanchez & The Pancho Villas are all playing upstairs at Tasty World tonight. Seems like a weird line-up, especially on a Monday, but if it's true, it's definitely worth seeing. Worth a drive down to find out, that's for sure.

How To Get Behind In Advertising

Just figured we'd start the week off with a laugh. Here's a few strange pics to illustrate poor advertising skills...

First, this menu misprint, which I swear to you is real (know the person who found it and scanned it). Next, courtesy of Bored, is this real estate ad picture sure to sell anyone on the property. And lastly, a classic from the Gardner Linn Phone Club, this McDonald's ad ("Who are the ad wizards that came up with that one?!?"). Now back to work, seriously. And keep buying things. You need them.

Word On The Street (Broad Street)

Wasting no time settling into their new five-member lineup (which now includes Annaray's BJ Bracewell and parenthood's Kevin Sweeney - both on guitar), the loud and awesome Brown Frown have holed up inside Downtown Athens Recording Company's studio (above Tasty World) to record their first official album. I don't know any release details yet, but if you see them, stalk them (they like that sort of thing). One thing's for sure: it will annoy several passersby this week and probably also be amazing.

(And for those who had heard about it, their first show back with the new lineup, which was scheduled for this Sunday at the UltraMod, has been indefinitely postponed due to baby-having. We'll let you know when there's a new date.)

Brian Wilson Says, "Smile. It's Friday"

As reported this morning at Pitchfork, you can now listen to 6 tracks from the rescued version of the infamous SMiLE album on the more-awesome-every-day Internet.

It's very strange though, you have to register an e-mail addy to hear 'em. I recommend getting yourself a gimmebrianwilsonforfree@hotmail.com e-mail address to avoid the future maniacal spam from Mr. Wilson.

This Weekend In Athens

It's a WARM kinda weekend...

FRI: Transplanted duo Parker & Lily and Electrelane play the 40 Watt.
Also, for the less 'edgy', there's Dodd Ferrelle at Nowhere Bar.

SAT: Liz Durrett opens for Vic Chesnutt at the Watt as well. Good chance to see Vic rock the drums and the guitar, all in one night. If you wanna know what Vic thinks about politics (and he's gonna tell you regardless), check out this recent Flagpole article. If you wanna know what he's listening to, check out this Banner article.

00's "Cultural" Trends

Popmatters, not content to wait for Pitchfork to make these sort of points within some condescending review, examines the "comeback" of popular 80's artists:

"Right now, our culture seems stuck -- sick to death of the manufactured yet no longer consistently capable of generating or appreciating the flamboyantly new and creative."

As well as refuting the supposed "death of the album":

"To put the issue into literary terms, the single is the equivalent of the short story, capturing the essence of a tale in a short window, while an album extends the process through a series of vignettes, or songs, conveying a deeper richness and complexity."

Pretentious? Yup. Entertaining? Probably. Time-Wasting? Definitely.

Editorial: Mormon Space Conspiracy?

Cancer Research ... or Disaster Engineering?

Okay, I've given it time, and it seems like every major news organization and indeed even folks on this very site are afraid to talk about what may lay behind the recent, fatal end of the Genesis capsule: a vast Mormon conspiracy. There, I said it.

Think about it: Firstly, it all went down in Utah. That should set off warning bells right there. Nextly, consider the purpose of the mission: "Scientists said the material, if recovered, would not only reveal the composition of the sun but also illuminate how our planet formed from clouds of stellar dust." Seems like it might advance some sort of "evolutionary" theory of cosmology - possibly even negating the need for any sort of deity through astrophysics. This, to me, would seem to harm the Mormon cause.

As always, the "Who would stand to benefit?" question comes into play, and I think it's been answered: Mormons. They're more hardcore than a lot of other Christian folk and likely wouldn't mind using strong-arm tactics to get their point across to NASA and other members of the liberal media. "Oh, is that your precious space dust on that parachute? [snip, snip] Oops, not anymore."

I'm not sure how they did it, but listen authorities, if you wanna start your search somewhere, I say try that church in Utah with the big long name and the famous (and some would say ego-maniacal) choir. And when you find your culprit(s), tell 'em this is no way to get polygamy re-legalized (even if we all secretly want it).

(P.S. Sprite's not all that great.)

Ceiling Fan Vs. The Coasters

For those of you who don't read the comments (which you should cause it wastes more time), don't miss another great video jewel courtesy of Karate Media:

Here's a link to some live video of Ceiling Fan playing The Coasters' "Poison Ivy" at 90.5. The camera work is a little atrocious, though... If I ever find time, I might finish and upload some of the rest of the set...

(Thanks KM!)

Athens Bandlinks

Finally, someone's done it. Athensmusic.com has successfully compiled (or, at least, started) a full list of links to Athens bands' websites. See David's write-up for more info (or to make an addition).

Tonight In Athens:

The 40 Watt is hosting a benefit for Athens Canine Rescue featuring Jackpot City, Calliope Fair, and The Outfit ... plus some comedians and whatnot. Basically it's a good cause and some pretty good music (Jackpot City, in particular, rocks), plus it's an early show (8:30) - so it's a good night to rock out and to help out. See the flyer for more info.

OB/GYN Love

This is a quote from a speech that President Bush gave Monday about the rising costs of health care in America...

"We've got an issue in America. Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."

When OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love, the terrorists have won!

Urban Hikers

Some folks aren't aware that some of the most daring and difficult exploration can take place in the least remote of settings. Infiltration.org is an online version of a zine dedicated to going where you're not supposed to go. Complete with pics and tips to help you access places supposedly 'off-limits' to the public. Why? I dunno, guess it's fun (and yet another way to stick it to the man!).

Chemolympian

(Internet Bouquet)

Our best to Sarah today, as she starts the next stage of her chemo decathlon. China's athletes suck at this, and with less hair making her more aerodynamic, she should be a shoe-in for the gold. Go Sarah, Go!

Backtalkin'

Remember all that weird stuff in the 80's about hidden messages if you play a song backwards? Well, there's an official site for "Reverse Speech" Technology, and it has lotsa audio samples of such supposed cases. Tell 'em Dio sent you.

This Weekend In Athens

Finally, another holiday is upon us...

FRI: As previously mentioned, Grand Fury plays their farewell show tonight at Tasty World with Park Bench Trio opening. Godspeed, GF.

SAT (Go Dawgs!): A heavy dose of rawk will be given to the 40 Watt crowd with The Stand-Ins, Lona, and Mother Jackson playing to wind down what will hopefully be the first football victory of the season.

MON (Happy Labor Day!): Garbage Island opens for some of the Fishbone guys at The Caledonia.

Tonight In Athens

Ceiling Fan and Producto play at the 40 Watt. Since there's been a lot of support around these parts for the theory that Ben Spraker is a guitar hero, this is a good chance for hero-worship of the best kind. Even though he says he's boring, he doesn't really mean it.

RE: Fake Title

Know all those headings that spammers use to try to get you to open their e-mails? Someone's finally done something useful with them: Spamusement! The site's pretty much self-explanatory. The creator of the site is also responsible for Disturbing Auctions (also very self-explanatory). Just proof that there's always more ways to waste your time.

Grand & Furious

Well, since the cat's outta the bag, I guess we can go ahead and safely that, keeping with the spirit of band break-up season, Grand Fury will be playing their farewell show tomorrow night at Tasty World with Park Bench Trio. Though never really at the 'forefront' of Athens' musical acts, they were consistently good at what they did (a Southern-roots-rock-ish sound) and certainly never disappointed. Personally, though, I'll prolly miss them most next time Centro-Matic rolls into town if I have to sit through a bad opening act. Friday's show will definitely be worth seeing.

(For those wondering, this is the mystery band that was alluded to as 'possibly about to break up' last week.)

Pleasure Boat Captains for Truth

Man... the presidential campaigns are really getting dirty. To counteract the Swift Vets for Truth movement, the dems have launched the Pleasure Boat Captains for Truth.

Their main charge is that Dubya wasn't the 20-something drinker he now claims to have been. Ouch!

Be sure to watch the ad...

I'd Slap a $200 Bill Down on the Barrel Head and Buy Back the Family Farm

Apparently these Bush bills are quite believable.

Tonight In Athens

One of our favorites, Don Chambers + GOAT play Tasty World tonight. If you've never seen a lead singer rock a banjo or a drummer rock a stepladder with hubcaps attached, tonight's your night. Oughta be a great show.
