Wanna Remix a My Morning Jacket Song?

Karate Media has posted the entire contents of the CD that came packaged with this month's Wired Magazine in MP3 format. It is a cd compilation that features Paul Westerberg, Beastie Boys, My Morning Jacket, David Byrne, former Athenian Danger Mouse, and many others.

The idea is to offer these songs under a Creative Commons license... which allows you to use the song for your own musical works. If anyone makes remixes of any of these songs... send 'em to us and we'll post 'em.

Jimmy Fallon + World Series = Movie Shoot

First I read this article on CNN which explains the re-write for an upcoming romance movie starring Jimmy Fallon. Apparently the script centers around the 2004 Red Sox season... However, due to the surprise ending of the Sox season the script had to be re-written. So they sent a skeleton crew to the deciding Game 4 to shoot a few scenes for the end of the movie.

It then occurred to me that I saw Jimmy Fallon on the field during the team's celebration after the game. He was looking overly dramatic while hugging and kissing a blonde woman. Turns out this was Drew Barrymore (his co-star). So... Fallon and Barrymore were on the field at the end of Game 4 shooting a scene for their movie? Did I imagine that, or did anyone else see it?

The Stand Ins

Mail Clerk doesn't normally let me get anything in re: Athens music, but I had to mention a show... If you're into crunchy, poppy, kick ass rock, go see the Stand Ins tonight at the 40 Watt. They come highly recommended by Robo-Dave (I like 'em too!).

This Weekend In Athens

Happy Halloween Everyone...

FRI: At the Caledonia, you can find the FREE "Athens For Kerry" rally. Now again, I usually say stay the hell away from the political shows, but it's free and you can skip the boring movie. In exchange, you get Don Chambers (8PM - Outdoors if the weather permits), Ta Kavourakia (10:30 - don't know much about 'em), Astra (11:30 - hear good things), and Hope For Agoldensummer (12:30 - they're really damn good).

If you're not in the mood for politics, you can go see Aqualove perform Bowie's Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars in its entirety at Tasty World.

SAT: Annaray, going by the name "Bone Machine", will be performing an entire set of Pixies covers. They really do play those songs amazingly well - often better than the actual Pixies. Ignore the picture in Flagpole (worse than the one above) and go to this show anyway. It'll be great. For another endorsement, read this Banner article. And don't be lame - wear your costume.

SUN: In what will either be a very cool or very disastrous event (in either case, worth seeing), 63 Crayons and Casper & The Cookies will play atop Wuxtry records. Show starts at 5:30. I'd go see that combo anyway - the location just makes it all the cooler.

Another monumental event happens later that evening - the return of Brown Frown. The band will debut its new five-member line-up at the UltraMod on Sunday. It's loud, sloppy, aggressive, drunk, and perfect to spill beer all over your costume to.

How the UltraMod works (for those who've never been): It's somewhat like a club-meets-house-party. To get there, leave downtown and go north on College Ave., when you reach MLK, take a left. Immediately on your right you'll see a fence, as soon as you pass the fence, there's a driveway and parking area. You're there.

Some alcohol/liquor will prolly be provided (usually hunch punch or a keg). You are encouraged to bring your own as well. Donations accepted/encouraged. Things usually start up between 10 and 11 - like a club. The trick is not being the first people, but not missing the party. Oh, and it'll be loud. And yes, it's a costume party.

(Note: Since UltraMod shows aren't always the most reliable, please check back here before going to the show - there maybe updates/changes. If I find out anything, this post'll be updated.)

For stuff I might've missed, you can see Flagpole's list of Halloween activities.

UPDATE: The UltraMod show will begin much earlier than expected in an effort to allow us working stiffs to not be dead on Monday morning. I was told 9 or 9:30 will be the band's start time. Be there, be costumed. It'll rock.

It's a Political Weekend

I hope you like politics. If not, this is gonna be a bad weekend for you. It doesn't matter if you plan to spend the next couple of days watching football (there'll be fans chanting "4 more years"), going to shows (the band you're watching will likely bash Bush), trick-or-treating (there'll be lots of Bush and Kerry costumes), or sleeping (am I the only one having dreams about Cokie Roberts?)... politics will follow you around.

To get you in the mood... here's a few games for you:

For Bush fans - Kerropoly
For Kerry fans - Give Bush a Brain

And if you're still undecided and feel like you need one last debate to make up your mind - The Hip Hop Debate

Elf Power Audio

If anyone wants a copy of the Elf Power set from the 40 Watt from back in May, you can get it here. As always, this is a limited time offer, so get it while it's hot.

(Thanks to Sloan Simpson for the link!)

How Effing American Are You?

Take the quiz, bitch.

Bush Gives You the Middle Finger

Taken from a video session that was shot while Dubya was Guv'na. Watch the video here. Funny stuff.

Abraham Lincoln

Was Abe Gay?

HomeStar Halloween

HomeStarRunner.com has some fun Halloween stuff again this year. If you've not carved your pumpkin yet, check out their wide range of pumpkin stencils. Or if you click "Holiday" from their collection of toons, you can find "The House That Gave Sucky Treats", which is really entertaining - and it'll give you great last minute deas for costumes. Laser Tag, anyone?

(Thanks to Vet Pharmacist for the link!)

Tonight In Athens

Astra, The Good Ship, and Venice Is Sinking play at the 40 Watt. I've not heard Astra, but the other two are great. Downbeat and melodic seems to be the tone of the evening. And I'm damn tired, so that's okay by me. Great if you wanna ease yourself into the upcoming party weekend.

World Series: Fox and Scott Stapp

Couple of items regarding last night's World Series:

- Fox Sports just pisses me off. Usually when the visiting team is about to clinch a series, fans in their hometown are shown throughout the game so that TV viewers can monitor their reactions. However, Fox kept showing a bar in New York City! Of all places!! Was there not a bar in Boston that was showing the game? It wasn't until the 9th inning that they began to show Bostonians... after having to watch New Yorkers' reactions all night. The night that the "curse" is broken would seem to be the ideal night to show hometown Sox fans. Dontcha think?

- Whew! Did anyone see Scott Stapp sing God Bless America??? (BTW, I only provide a link because of the hilarity of the scottstapp.com front page.) It was awful! But funny! It was soooo.... flat.... and.... breath-y. Yikes!

Tonight In Athens

Beijing officially releases their new EP, Lorraine, at the Caledonia. It's pretty simple, straight ahead rock - "UK-influenced" says the Flagpole, but not imitative, I'd say - just enough to have the scruffy hair. Nice guys, though. And catchy tunes.

(My apologies for posting this so late, but Blogger's been messed up all day.)

Her Love's a Pony... and Ponies are Boss

Stylus Magazine has posted their take on the top 10 worst lyrics from Interpols first album, Turn on the Bright Lights. Funny stuff.

In Honor of John Peel

Large Hearted Boy has posted a Smog performance of a VU song called "Jesus". The track was recorded during their Peel session in 2001.

Jesus rocks! So did Peel!

You Have More Than 2 Choices

Splendid has provided a list of 15 presidential candidates you won't be seeing on CNN. My favorite is the Charles Jay/Marilyn Chambers ticket from the Personal Choice Party.

"He's a boxing publicist/manager, and owner of an internet gambling site. She's the star of porn classic Behind The Green Door. If that doesn't spell the scenario for the most Fox sitcom-y presidency ever, I don't know what would."

Fear and Loathing, Campaign 2004

"The genetically vicious nature of presidential campaigns in America is too obvious to argue with, but some people call it fun, and I am one of them. Election Day -- especially a presidential election -- is always a wild and terrifying time for politics junkies, and I am one of those, too. We look forward to major election days like sex addicts look forward to orgies. We are slaves to it..."

In honor of a week till elections, here's Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's take on the candidates, the debates, and the mindset of the American public.

(Thanks to Bored for the link!)

Tonight In Athens

Don Chambers plays a solo show at Tasty World. The opening band is Iron Hero - who rose from the ashes of Reading to make a real quick buzz. Can't tell you more than that, as I have yet to hear 'em. Chambers is of course, totally awesome. If you wanna see him rock a banjo, this is your place to be. If not, why not? He's damn good.

That Damned Acid Reflux

Ok, here's the whole story. Glad it's cleared up. My Ashlee Fan Club membership has been renewed.

Vic Chesnutt Live Audio

If anyone wants to hear Vic Chesnutt's set from the other night at the 40 Watt (when he opened for John Cale), you can see the setlist and download it here (registration required). He played a short set, but there were several new songs in it (as he was fresh back from recording his new album in L.A.) - so it should be a cool show to hear. As always, this is a limited time download, so get it quick.

(Thanks to Sloan Simpson for the taping and link!)

Ashlee Simpson = Milli Vanilli

Financial Guru sent me an e-mail saying:

"It's already 9:30 and you still don't have a link up on your blog to a video of the Ashlee Simpson SNL lip synching fiasco?

http://www.collegehumor.com/news/ashlee_snl.wmv

I tell you that monkey dance is going to be the next Macarena. She's smarter than she appears."

My apologies for falling behind on the job.

Wolf Packs for Truth

The stars of last week's scary Bush ad have come forward to take a stand.

Tonight In Athens

Mike Mantione (of Five-Eight) opens up for pre-no-depression band The Silos at The Caledonia. Be interesting to see what he sounds like toned down - guess he'll play lotsa Good Nurse stuff.

Editorial: Down With Voting!

So, an interesting exchange happened at the R.E.M. concert on Saturday night. At one point during the show, Stipe started talking politics - as we all knew he would. HOWEVER, he basically started saying that everyone should make sure they get out and vote (he was encouraging registration too, I think having lost track of the time - as time's up on that).

As he's telling people they should cast their vote no matter which way they voted, there erupted a chorus of booing mixed in with some applause. Were they booing the concept of voting? Was this a "less talk, more rock" boo? Not sure. But I'm assuming it's a Vote For Change Tour backlash - people just waiting to boo anything as much as Stipe couldn't wait to say it again. Only, I couldn't help but notice most of it came from the "expensive seats".

Another Athenian Goes National

Country is as country does.
For anyone thinking Jennifer Nettles had disappeared since leaving Athens, you'd be wrong. She's now fronting a country trio named Sugarland that's doing quite well. Apparently, they're all set to release their debut album this week and are already all over CMT and really high in the country music charts. I had no idea. Anyway, you can check out video and read more at CMT.com's artist page for them, but be forwarned: It's pretty Nashville-ized.

(Thanks to Allison for head's up and the link!)

Tour REM's Rehearsal Space

There's a pretty cool tour of REM's rehearsal space over at athensmusic.com. It's a wet dream for guitar nerds.

Didi Dunphy + Sun + "Parasol" = Cliche

Thought this was funny... This week's Columns has an article about the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Art School.

Check out the photo of Didi Dunphy (a UGA professor who we've previously posted about) shielding the suns from her eyes with a "parasol". Is this not a classic Art prof photo?

E6 Audio

Large-Hearted Boy posted some great links today, including one on an Elephant 6 BitTorrent Project that'll be repeatedly posting live shows from those bands. Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, and Elf Power are first up. Also, LHB's put up links to a coupla' Neutral Milk Hotel shows these last two days [1 , 2]. As you know, these shows don't stay up long, so grab 'em quick.

Three Cheers For Hillary

For anyone who's missed it, Antidisingenuousmentarianism's had some pretty amusing stuff lately. Like squirrel-hunting and pacifist mockery.

Also, she's been following the University budget issues like no one else around. Here's her latest post about it. If it interests you (as it does lots of folks who run and visit this site), you should really check back there daily.

Danger Mouse Vs. Gorillaz

While this story first reached us via Flagpole and Gardner Linn months ago, Pitchfork now reports on former Athenian DJ Danger Mouse (remember the mix CD's?) co-producing the new Gorillaz album with Damon Albarn. This time there's a few more details, but not too much more.

Deconstructionist Deconstructed

Jacques Derrida 'Dies' --The Onion
The father of French Deconstructionist philosophy, Jacques Derrida, passed away a few days back. So naturally then the question arises, as it always does with philosophical figures of this magnitude: What impact has he had on the National Football League?

Vegetarians For Truth

"This hangs in the front window of the Grit. Not an official Kerry / Edwards endorsement, I guess."

Wonder if it tastes like foot?

This Weekend In Athens

It's the freakin' weekend, baby...

FRI: Only one place to be tonight and that's at the 40 Watt for Psychic Hearts' and Macha's CD release show. This is the first show by Macha in Athens in three years, and likely the last for a long while (ever?). Then, they're off to Europe to open for R.E.M. I used to stand in awe of Macha's live performances, and I hope they're just as good if not better now.

If you want to hear some of their new album, Forget Tomorrow, check out this page at AthensMusic.com. Also, Flagpole recently interviewed both Josh McKay and Kai Riedl. I know we say it a lot, but you do not want to miss out on this show.

SAT: For those not making the trek to Gwinnett for R.E.M. and Now It's Overhead, there are several good options - two of them relatively rare.

Firstly, Je Suis France shows up out of the blue at Nuci's Space for a little homecoming weekend of their own. What can we say - we like the France. They rock. (And yes, the picture size was merited - mostly because I'm too lazy to re-size, but also because it's epic in scope.)

Secondly, for those more into Americana type stuff, you can catch the seldom-seen trio Workhorses Of The Entertainment/Recreation Industry at Flicker. Their performances are always good and only happen about twice a year. Someday, they'll have an album.

Lastly, We Vs. The Shark will be tearing things up at the Caledonia. We hype them a lot, but that's only because they're damn good. If you've not been out, go see them play - they need more folks of legal drinking age or older in the crowd! Also, Flagpole digs on their new album and their bassist told The Banner what albums he digs on now.

UPDATE: Apparently, this will not be the full lineup of Je Suis France. Also, Jucifer is in Atlanta at the Star Bar both nights. Thanks to Hillary and Printmaker for the news.

UPDATE 2: Okay, so the word is that JSF will NOT be playing at all. Don't know where the mix-up came in, we just print what we read and believe. Sorry to anyone who shows up there expecting that much rock (this is no dis on Astra, who's playing instead, I've just never heard them). Feel free to still enjoy the picture.

The Monkey Faces Of Bush

Since we've apparently become the most popular place to find that video of John Edwards fixing his hair, I guess it's only right we throw in something from the other side...

A version of these Bush vs. Monkey pictures got sent to me (and apparently a lot of folks) yesterday. Not sure where it originated from, but there's even a page now where you can investigate the similarities yourself.

The Return Of Col. Bruce

I know there's a 'noodling' comment coming from Robo for this, but if anyone's interested in last night's show by Colonel Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit, you can find it here. Still not sure which branch of the forces he was on. "Aquarium Rescue Unit" makes me think maybe it was the Navy. But who knows...

(Thanks to Sloan Simpson for the link & audio!)

Tonight On Your TV

If you're not in the mood for going out and you like The Office (who doesn't?), then you should turn on BBC America at 9PM because they're going to premiere the 2-hour Office Special for the first time in the U.S.

I'm fairly sure this is the same program known as "The Office Christmas Special", which aired in Britain last December and catches up with the crew 2 years later. It's the real finale of the series and now we finally get to see it. Though, if you've not seen the series, you should prolly just tape it, rent the 2 seasons, watch 'em, then watch it. For more info, check out this NYT article.

And for info on the upcoming American version of the series, titled The Office: An American Workplace, check out the list of characters as well as casting info. Who knows if it'll be any good - but it'd take a lot to be as good as the original.

Tonight In Athens

Hope For Agoldensummer will appear at the 40 Watt as part of a benefit to fight against "Amendment One" (the one against gay marriage). There are other acts on the bill that Robo can tell you about, but since it's for a good cause - why not, right?

(Brief Soapbox Diversion: I usually prefer my politics and music VERY separate, but I don't think there's anyone reading this who thinks, regardless of how they feel about gay marriage, that the issue should be raised to amendment level or that a constitutional amendment should ever be used to take away rights. Just ain't what it's meant for. Feel free to disagree, but you'd be wrong. Sorry for the rant.)

Also, the Rosebuds are in town and playing at the Caledonia.

Dolly Parton Is The New Judas Priest

Check out this article on the scientific study that finds a correlation between country music and suicide. (Maybe this is why the Star Room Boys called it quits?)

DBT's First Vid

Well, no sooner do we mention that, than the Drive-By Truckers' first official 'video' appears. You can now watch "Never Gonna Change" (filmed live at the 40 Watt this past August) at New West Records' website.

(Thanks to both Bored and DVDGuy!)

DBT On TV

In their usual punctual fashion, the folks over at NineBullets.org already have video up from the Drive-By Truckers' performance of "Never Gonna Change" last night on The Late Late Show.

(Thanks DVDGuy!)

Tonight On Your Television

Just a reminder that the Drive-By Truckers will be making their second appearance on CBS' The Late Late Show (formerly hosted by Craig Kilborn) tonight. Show starts at 12:35 EST.

(Warning: you may have to endure some Sandra Bernhard previous to DBT.)

John Edwards and that Hair

Wanna see a funny video of John Edwards fixing his hair?

Interview: Kevin Lane

A member of the legendary Athens band The Possibilities, Kevin Lane has been involved with music in this town for over a decade. Recently, we bugged the hell out of him until he agreed to let us know what's going on with him now...

So, update us. What's been up with you post-Possibilities?
Well, I went on tour playing bass with Elf Power. We went all over North America and Spain, playing with some great bands along the way. We played a show in Toronto with Tobin Sprout from Guided By Voices and toured across Spain with The Lilys. During that tour, I played the Elf Power guys (and gal) some recordings I had been doing every Monday night with a revolving group of friends. They really liked it and now they're putting it out on their label, Orange Twin, under the name "Jack Logan and the Monday Night Recorders". That'll hopefully be out in early '05. My main project right now is The Sets of 9. We're just getting the line-up solidified so it's in the early stages.

What's The Sets Of 9 sound like?
I think one song sounds like a Dinosaur Jr rip and Meghann commented one song has a Pink Floyd thing happening. I think that's a good sign.

Know y'all've been recording some: what's coming first - a live show or an album? Any estimated time for either?
We'll play our first show when we have a cd to promote. Hopefully that will happen within a year.

Monday Night Recorders stuff - Can you share the tracklist?
1. I Recognize You
2. Dad's Suitcase
3. Don't Remember Where It Is
4. Come Away
5. Out Of Place
6. Feels Better
7. The Race Is Running
8. Cauliflower Ears
9. Brothers Grimm And The Cowboy Band
10. River Of Sweat
11. Little Fool
12. Associate
13. Broken Machines
14. Diggin' In
15. Spotty Glassware

What's your favorite way to waste time at work?
When I worked at Dial America years ago, we used to draw little pictures and make the other guy guess which rock star the pictures represented. Example: I would draw a dick + a dollar bill. Answer: Peter Buck

You've worked at the Caledonia - is it a requirement that the vocals sound like that?
Mr. Lane elected, perhaps wisely, not to answer this question.

What's it like to tour with Elf Power? Completely sober bore?
Fun!! Not sober at all, never boring. It was like MTV's "The Real World" in that I was spending 24 hours a day with 2 strangers and 3 people I only knew from seeing them downtown. You can learn alot about yourself and your little ways. It was really interesting to observe how the longtime members acted towards each other versus the way they acted towards the new members. They've been a band for a long time. They're like family. We (the new guys) did a pretty good job of fitting in, I think. It was great.

Maybe you have a line on this - what the hell happened to Nutria? They played like 4 or 5 shows and disappeared. Not that you're their keeper or anything. Just wondering.
They're recording new tracks. I'm not sure what their plans are for upcoming shows.

Who's the drunkest member of the Monday Night Recorders? Do chemicals help or hinder the songwriting process?
Everyone was equally drunk except for Rob Veal. He doesn't drink. Lots of pot was smoked, as I'm sure you can tell. The alcohol and pot relaxed everyone a bit so, yeah, I think it helped the ideas flow a little easier.

A big thanks to Kevin for keeping us up to date! For more information or music from the artists mentioned above, check out the links provided. As usual, we'll post more stuff when things happen.

Back From Vacation

So... Everyone who holds an office job in tight quarters knows that the day back from vacation is pretty unbearable. Not only do you have to deal with being at work for the first time in days, catching up on all your missed emails (317 e-mails are waiting in my inbox), getting your body adjusted to a normal sleep schedule, etc... but you have to deal with comments like:

"So, you decided to come back?"
"Well, I thought we wouldn't be seeing you anymore!"
"How was vacation? Go by too fast?"

etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Are they trying to rub in the fact that I'm having trouble adjusting back to my work schedule? Can't they just leave me alone for a few days at least?

Editorial: R.I.P. Guthrie's

As many of you may already know, Athens suffered the tragic loss of a formerly-popular traditional eating establishment last week. Driving down Baxter Street, the space formerly occupied by Guthrie's original Athens location is now darkened - with an empty parking lot and yellow tape across the door. A sad sight for a business that once thrived on tailgating to display on homecoming weekend.

Some of you may prefer your food healthy, and that's fine. But to me, when it came to nice, nasty fast food, Guthrie's (in its heyday) couldn't be beat. Fried chicken strips, french fries that tasted like fried chicken strips, the best cole slaw around (for those who ate it), always-tasty toast, wonderful sweet tea, and of course, that sauce.

That sauce still stains several of my shirts. It never comes off. Say it could clean a penny. I never tried it cause I never wanted to waste sauce. And if you'd never tried it, it would seem against all logic and reasoning, but a Gut-box (just under 8000 calories, right?) was the PERFECT cure for a hangover on a Saturday or Sunday at noon. It would sop up all the alcohol left in your system and send you home full and happy.

Now, it stands as a sad reminder of poor business practices. It wasn't its never-changing menu - Southerners tend to value tradition. It wasn't Atkins, though that probably had some impact. But when you put your business' day-to-day operations in the wrong hands, mismanage funds, use business money to fund personal 'indulgence', etc., you can't expect but this to happen. Then, when the East-side location shut down, what did they do? Continue to hire bad employees, let the old location get run down, never have anything in stock, let health ratings slide, replace the good fries with cheap crappy ones, replace the cups with cheap crappy ones that leak, hire family members to work for free because you can't pay others, and finally go against all economic theory and RAISE prices in the face of lowered demand in a last-ditch effort.

Now, all we're left with is a shell of what once was a gas station, was converted into a successful business that became a tradition, and then an image of faded glory. But the food sure was good. So was the sauce.

UPDATE 3/13/06: Since this post continues to be a popular find on the Internets and since the comments keep getting erased somehow, here's the new news...

For all those Athenians desperate for Guthrie's, our friend Jimmy was kind enough to break the news that Guthrie's of Danielsville has re-opened. It's about a 25 minute drive from Athens (a straight shot down Danielsville Hwy. - just past the Danielsville town square) and is well worth it. Their contact info:

715 Hwy 29 North
Danielsville, GA 30633
706/795-5279

Dig in y'all! And thanks to Jimmy for the news!

Tonight In Athens

Tonight marks the fourth and final appearance of David Barbe & The Quick Hooks as far as their Monday nights on the patio of the Caledonia go. This evening, he'll be joined by Adam Musick (of Southern Bitch) - in a rare "solo" appearance. Show starts at 9PM. If you've not caught one, it's your last chance and it's completely worth it. And hell, it might even be over in time for you to catch...

John Cale at the 40 Watt. And if that weren't enough to get you there, it's just been confirmed that Vic Chesnutt will open the show - having just returned from recording sessions in L.A.

All in all, you can't go wrong at the nexus of Pulaski/Clayton/Washington tonight.

As Smooth As Tennessee Whiskey...

TNGirl1.jpg / TNGirl2.jpg

The above pictures (from last weekend) are for:
A)Anyone still fed up with the game last week.
B)Those who despise gameday activities and want an amusing example.
C)Homecoming.
D)Hillary, who suggested we offer more scantily-clad women on our site.
E)Those who despise Tennessee fans (AKA "All of the above.").

Since they do contain a striking case of the rare dual form of cheek-leak, I've not posted them directly (don't know how she thought that skirt was gonna cover it). That is to say, they're not 100% work-safe. Enjoy.

(Thanks to Sarah. Dunno who took the pics, but she sent 'em our way.)

This Weekend In Athens

This'll be known as "good combo" weekend...

FRI: Athens 441 happens again at the Morton. It'd sum it up, but Athensmusic.net has already done a great job of that, so I'll steal from them:

The second in the three-part series takes place on October 15 and features Of Montreal, Hot Club of Athens, Hope For Agoldensummer, and Subsonics (from Atlanta). ... Tickets are $10-12. Call (706) 613-3371 for more details. The host is JoE Silva, writer and DJ/MC for the "Just Off the Radar" program on WUGA.

...I'll just add that Of Montreal has played here far too rarely and puts on a great live show. Also, Hope For Agoldensummer has taken some time off, so this is a bit of a return for them too - and they're always awesome. Haven't seen the other two bands, but those two alone justify the price.

SAT: The Caledonia hosts Annaray and A. Should be a very loud and very good show. Look for Annaray to perform a set of Pixies covers in two weeks, which has a great likelihood of bettering the Pixies own live show - not in the least because they won't be accompanied by an annoying light show or a real expensive ticket price.

Also, Summer Hymns' Zachary Gresham will be performing a solo set at the 40 Watt. Never seen him perform solo before, so I can't say what it'll be like, but Summer Hymns is great, so I s'pose it'd probably be as well.

Oh, and Kenosha Kid plays an acoustic set at the Healing Arts Center at 9:30.

With the new Star Wars DVDs selling like hotcakes, it's amazing that Doug "Best Week Ever" Benson was able to get an exclusive interview with George Lucas.

Word On The Street (Clayton Street)

'Tis the season for solo records it seems. While Patterson Hood and Adam Musick have both confirmed work on forthcoming projects, it seems a former Athenian is returning home for a bit to do the same thing. Orenda Fink will begin recording her solo album early next year with Andy Lemaster at the controls. What this means for the future of Azure Ray, we cannot begin to speculate ('sides, the person who mentioned it to me didn't ask). In the meantime, she and Andy are of course both on the road, finishing up Now It's Overhead's U.S. tour.

It Was The Best Of Times, It Was the Blurst Of Times...

At The Unofficial John Westmoreland Tribute Ring, you can find The Last Road Home - a once-daily serial involving a monkey, a typewriter, and a suicide note. The author, Milos George, plans on continuing the project for the rest of his life in order to benefit or fight, er... something. We're now on day 114.

Tonight In Athens

Now It's Overhead plays the 40 Watt tonight. Andy LeMaster and company always put on an amazing show, and (I know we've said this before, but) this maybe your last chance to see them for upwards of a year or more unless you have R.E.M. tix (which obviously won't be nearly as cool a setting). So, see 'em before Andy disappears back into the studio.

DBT, DVD, & MTV

As was widely known, The Drive-By Truckers had a film crew and audio truck along with them for both nights of their recent Dirty South CD release party at the 40 Watt. Plans have been in the works for some time to make a live DVD that includes footage of the "making of" the album.

However, an off-shoot of this, hinted at by New West yesterday and confirmed by Jenn Bryant today, is that there will finally be official videos released by the band. The first of them will be a live video for the song "Never Gonna Change", which should be released "soon".

Though there's been reluctance in the camp for a while about video-making, I guess this means they finally decided it was necessary. Hopefully, they'll find their way to the music video channels soon.

(Thanks to Printmaker for the heads up on the announcement!)

Time-Wasting Tip: Office Weaponry

In today's competitive business world, it pays to be armed at all times. Thus, you should spend plenty of time experimenting with office supplies - finding out which ones can be used as armaments and which are simply useless except for their basic function.

Grade school may have primed us for simple weapons ("wasps", shooting rubber bands, etc.), but technology has advanced since then. Super office weapons like The Eradicator now dominate the cubicles and offices of your co-workers... shouldn't you be ready?

Athens Music New Releases

A couple of new albums officially hit shelves today...

The Fairburn Royals release their new CD, The Whistler. It's been described as "melodic indie-pop" and is incredibly catchy. You can read more in this Flagpole article or this Banner article. Highly recommended.
(Click here to listen to "Rapture".)

And as previously mentioned, Barbara Cue officially releases Rhythm Oil today. A friend of mine called it "minimalist roots rock", so I guess that kinda sums it up. Would love to post some audio, but alas, there's nothing from this album on their site, so I guess all I can say is to go by Tasty World tonight at 7PM and check 'em out live (again, it's free). You'll even get Sunny Ortiz as a bonus.

Legal Training For Musicians

Just got this last minute reminder from Will Kiser over at Nuci's Space...

"Legal Issues for Songwriters, Musicians, and Bands"

Date: October 12, 2004
Time: 4:00 PM
FREE!

Featuring The Artist’s Advocate: "Legal Issues Facing Musicians, Songwriters and Bands" (originally aired June 26th) with special guests Alan Clarke (an entertainment attorney with Clarke & Anderson), Charles Driebe (an entertainment attorney and manager of the Blind Boys of Alabama), Steve Labriola (a litigator with Fellow, Johnson & Labriola) and musical guest Julie Powell from Athens. After the show, Lisa Kincheloe, Executive Director of GLA, will hold a Q&A session. Free food and beverages will be provided.

Presidential Candidates In Drag

It's important to decide who to vote for based on the important issues - like how they'd look as women.

Tonight In Athens

Firstly, at 7PM you can catch Barbara Cue at Tasty World for FREE. (That's right, free.) It's the official CD release party for their new album, Rhythm Oil. So if you're a fan or you like roots rock or you simply want a less-boring happy hour, there's something for ya'. See this Flagpole article for more info.

In addition, the Japancakes will be playing several hours later at Tasty World as well. That show is not free but will undoubtedly be worth the cost. This is also the CD release show for their new album, Waking Hours. The 'cakes new material is just as strong as their early stuff, and when I saw them a few weeks ago, it was amazing how tight they were - especially for a group that hadn't been playing regular performances in over a year. This is definitely a "don't miss it" kinda show - even at the cost of enduring Tasty World for several hours.

Finally, as a sidenote, the David Barbe & The Quick Hooks / Adam Musick show that was originally scheduled for this evening at the Caledonia has been moved to Monday (the 18th).

Foo-lish

Daily Foo has some really great pictures up right now. In addition to lazy computing, you can find royal disses, street-wise Microsoft products, and the best alibi ever.

Kevn Kinney Audio

Anyone looking to download Friday's set from Kevn Kinney and the Sun-Tangled Angel Revival, can find it here. As always, this is limited time download. Thanks again to Sloan Simpson for the recording, upload, and link!

Halloween Activities

Checking out the calendar at the Athens Visitor's Bureau, there are several Halloween-related events coming up. Including the Corn Maze (now - the 31st), weekend Ghost Tours Of Athens (14th-15th; 21st-22nd), a symposium on tombstones (16th), grisly folk tales (30th), and a Halloween Party to benefit the American Heart Association (31st). But of course, there's always the usual football, drinking, music, costumes, and debauchery. You know, your choice.

Come In, Rove...

When we originally found the stories surrounding the "mystery bulge" in Bush's jacket during the first debate, we were all extremely skeptical and decided not to post about it, but in light of new responses, perhaps it is newsworthy.

UPDATE: It appears there's actually a blog already going on this. Ah, election time. (Found via Large-Hearted Boy.)

Tonight In Athens

The Sunshine Fix return from the first leg of their U.S. tour to play a long-overdue CD release party for their newest CD, Green Imagination at the Caledonia. Not sure how it'll sound in that club, but if you've never seen them live, you should go check it out simply for the absolutely perfect vocal harmonies. Plus, if you've ever wanted to be married, bassist and ladies' man Sam Mixon could do the job - he's ordained (not sure by which institution). Read more in this Banner article or in this Flagpole article.

Hey Evanescence Fans! You Have Bad Taste in Music!

This is a site that I shouldn't be posting late on a Friday afternoon... it's too good to be wasted for a late Friday afternoon. This is more of a Monday morning post. Right when everyone is hitting the site as they try to avoid work...

But, since I'm gonna be gone all next week, I had to leave with a parting gift for you all.

Financial Guru sent me a link to youhavebadtasteinmusic.com. Be sure to watch the videos of this guy gettin' the word out (under "Video Documentation").

I recommend starting with the Evanescence vid. Particularly right at the end when a female Evanescence fan is defending her taste in music. It's priceless.

Have a good week everyone!

Hipster Gossip

The new issue of Hush! Hush! is officially "on stands" now (by that, I mean it's laying around some coffee houses). If you've been thirsting for black & white pictures of Joseph Plunket, Gordon Lamb, Pylon, and Chris Hassiotis (cutting a rug nonetheless), then this is the magazine for you. You can also find out what's "Scene" and what's "Sorry", get your dose of Stipe-spotting, and of course pictures of the local townie known only as "Corey".

They don't have a website, but you can e-mail them. Also, the back cover promises another next month, so perhaps the between-issue gap won't be as big this time. That oughta make a few 19-year-olds at Room 13 very happy.

This Weekend In Athens

Holy hell there's a lot going on tonight...

FRI: At 8PM, Kevn "Where's the 'i'?" Kinney will do a solo, acoustic in-store performance at School Kids Records.

Audition With Max Reinhardt will finally be releasing their debut CD, Nachtluft ("Night Air"), at Little Kings Bar (that place next to the Manhattan). There, you can German cabaret away your evening. Read more in this Banner article.

The Caledonia also has a cool lineup that night: Producto, The Late B.P. Helium, and Parker & Lily. CD's being released by the latter two. Parker & Lily recently did this interview for Flagpole and told the Banner what they've been listening to.

Finally, if you haven't gotten your fill earlier, The Weight and Southern Bitch (who, it's universally agreed, rock hard) open up for Kevn Kinney and The Sun-Tangled Angel Revival (original full line-up) at the 40 Watt. Folks I've talked to say it's easily Kevn's best album in a decade or more. See this article in Flagpole for more on Kevn.

SAT: If you still have a want for music, Barbara Cue will be playing the Georgia Theatre after the Tennessee game. Depending on when the game ends, they may play two sets. Sunny Ortiz (from Widespread Panic) will be sitting in with them (which makes for a helluva lot of percussion). See this post at AthensMusic.com (from William Tonks) or this article in Flagpole for more info.

...And In This Corner, We Have A Weird Regional Event

I couldn't help but wanna post this. It's some odd lightweight title fight happening (where else?) in Gainesville this weekend. The best part, though, is that there's an after-party AND next day's brunch already scheduled. To read more about it (and you should) click here. Also, you can enlarge the above poster.

Hey, maybe we can start sponsoring these sorta events. RoboDave vs. Bain Mattox. RoboDave vs. A Classically-Trained Bongo Player. The list goes on and on...

(Thanks to David for the link!)

Origami Boulder

Origami, is Japanese art of folding paper. Boulder is round rock. Origami Boulder is wadded up paper! You understand now, dumbo?

(Thanks to Printmaker for the link!)

Tonight In Athens

Transplanted duo Parker & Lily play WUOG's (90.5's) Live In The Lobby tonight at 8PM. Get a sample of what to expect in their headlining show this Friday.

Doug Haines: Neighborhood Patrolman

Got an e-mail from a regular dayjobber today asking if we'd heard about this. Apparently Doug Haines stopped a 16 year-old girl in traffic and told her that he was gonna cut her head off if she didn't stop driving recklessly through his neighborhood.

According to Haines, she was speeding. According to the girl, Haines is crazy.

Anyone have any idea as to what happened? Perhaps someone saw it? Someone live in Five Points and see it happen?? Send us the gossip!

Concerts Galore

A few 'press release' type items...

First, I've updated yesterday's post to include the announcement that Casper & The Cookies will be playing ATOP Wuxtry on Halloween - which is awesome.

Next, AthensMusic.com's posted Barbara Cue's announcement on their upcoming shows here (more on those shows later).

Finally, it's been announced that the Drive-By Truckers will play The Tabernacle (in Atlanta) just after Thanksgiving. Here's the official release* from Jenn Bryant and company:

Holy #@&*!!! The mighty mighty Drive-By Truckers are coming to The Tabernacle on Sat Nov 27th (Sat after Thanksgiving)! ... This holiday show will hopefully become a yearly tradition. ... TICKETS GO ON SALE SATURDAY OCTOBER 9 AT ALL TICKETMASTER LOCATIONS or by PHONE 404.249.6400. Get your tickets before they sell out!

*=Blatant pandering and salesmanship removed for your protection.

Robo-Dave, Athensmusic.com, Overflo, and Bongos

On September 30, Athensmusic.com posted a story about an Athens band called Overflo. The story isn't all that interesting, but the comments are. Frequent Day Job visitor, Robo-Dave, got a fire lit under him and went nuts! Great stuff.

How to Confuse an Undecided Voter

After last night's Veep debate, CNN's Bill Hemmer discussed the night with a group of 12 undecided voters. After talking about each candidate's highs and lows, Hemmer said, "Ok, let's see a show of hands. Did you make up your mind on who you're going to vote for tonight, yes or no?"

Man, I've never seen such confused looks on the faces of adults. You're talking about 12 of the most indecisive people in the world, and they're thinking, "Do I raise my hand for yes? Or do I raise my hand for no? yes? no? yes? no?"

It was classic.

Time Wasting Site of the Day: 24-hour Billie Jean

I know that I just used a time waster from flip flop flyin... but this one's really a time waster.

Below you will find the dance bit from Michael Jackson's Billie Jean video stretched out so that it's 24 hours long. Who can watch it the longest?

News and Review from Pitchfork

First the news:

Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson are gonna record a full length album together. From Pitchfork, "Wilson explained: 'I'll make a rock 'n' roll album with Paul. That's going to happen next year. Paul is way out there. He's a complete original.'"

Now the review:

Pitchfork gives R.E.M. a 5.2. Ouch! Quote: "Its chief problem is that every word, every note, and every instrument sounds dry, sapped of most of their personality. Whereas R.E.M. were once Southern eccentrics trying to figure things out, and making lasting music in the process, lately they sound neither Southern nor eccentric and, more to the point, their music is far from memorable."

Athens Music New Releases

Amok, the new album by The Late B.P. Helium hits stores today. There are plans for supporting tours with Of Montreal and Elf Power. In the meantime, you can catch 'em at The Caledonia on Friday (more on that later). For more info or for audio samples, click here.
