Christmas With My Cat
For some strange reason, I decided to take my cat with me to my family's house for the holidays. I dunno... I felt bad about him sitting in an empty house for a week. That was my first mistake.
It's a two hour drive to my family's house, and Norman Meowsers was as peaceful as could be. He didn't sleep, but he just curled up in the corner of his little travel cage and rode quietly. I was so in love with my cat after that... felt paternal pride towards him.
Then...
On the ride back home, it was a different story. About 30 minutes into the trip, while riding on I-285, he took a shit. This was no average shit... this was rotten guts. It was bad, but Norman simply scraped it to the side, cried for a minute, and rode another 30 minutes in peace. Once again... paternal pride.
Then...
After about 30 minutes of sitting near his shit, he got pissed. So what did he do?
He pissed! He put his front claws up on the cage, and pissed so that it sprayed me and the entire windshield. Ugghhh! Then, he started crying and moaning and yelling for the remaining 45 minutes of the trip. So at this point, I have cat piss on me and have been smelling cat shit for the past hour.
Then...
We got home. Since it was so dark (all this happened at night), I couldn't tell how bad the mess was. When he ran in the house, I saw that he was covered in shit and piss. So I chased him all over the house to get him outside. Everywhere he stepped smelled like shit and piss...
So...
I was up late last night smelling like shit and piss, cleaning shit and piss, and cursing like shit and piss.
How was everyone else's holidays?
Smoosh!
One last post... Just read about a band called
Smoosh. They're a band from Seattle with an 11 year-old girl on keys and a 9 year-old girl on drums. Recent shows include opening slots for
Jimmy Eat World and
PUSA.
Is this just a marketing scheme? Or are they actually good?
Download an MP3 and decide for yourself.

Happy Holidays!
This Holiday In Athens (& A Bit Beyond)
Merry Christmas Eve, y'all. As you might suspect, there's not a lot going on around here for the next coupla' weeks, but here's a scattering of what's around...
SAT (Dec. 25th - Merry Christmas!): In Athens, apparently the Go Bar will open late for a dance party, but if you're around Atlanta,
Patterson Hood will be playing
The Earl that night.
TUES (Dec. 28th): For you classical/world music-ish fans, or simply fans of reunion shows, Viktor & Andrej will play the
40 Watt. One of those two (I think Andrej?) moved, but now they're reunited for the holidays. Tonight's show starts at 9 PM. See
this Flagpole article for more info.
WED (Dec. 29th): Madeline returns to Athens for the holidays as well. Bringing
Zumm Zumm out as well to play a special holiday show at the
40 Watt. Word has it there'll be a performance at Tight Pockets too, but I dunno when that'll be (if you know, please post in the comments below). See
this Flagpole interview for more info.
Also another chance to see Viktor & Andrej, this time at the Healing Arts Centre (again at 9 PM).
THURS (Dec. 30th): Garbage Island,
Mother Jackson, and others play the
40 Watt for Craig Lieske's Birthday Bash. Sure to be loud.
FRI (Dec. 31st): As if you needed to read it here, the legendary
Pylon will be joined by
Elf Power to rock in the New Year. Stay afterwards for the Athenian tradition of shaking your drunk ass to the Krush Girls. I know everyone says it, but this will sell out beforehand, so get tickets early at Lo Yo Yo, School Kids (I think), or
online at Pitch-A-Tent.
SAT (Jan. 1st - Happy New Year's!): GO DAWGS!!!
See y'all back here next year, hopefully with plenty of fun new stuff (especially if we can get server space of our own). Thanks for the fun, and have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Bye Bye Blue Sky
Sorry to end the year on a sad note, but as it turns out Blue Sky Cafe is not just closed for the holidays, it's closed for good. The employees just found out on the night of the 22nd, so it's real sudden. I don't know if it's the food gamble that killed 'em or not, but it's a real jab at local business. How far is the walk to Jittery Joe's?
Forklift Driver Klaus - The First Day
I saw this awhile ago and just came across it again at
Movies Online, so I thought I would post it here. It's a very unique training film dealing with the trouble caused when a forklift isn't operated the way it should be. The action doesn't start until a couple of minutes into the film, but it's worth it. You won't understand the dialogue, but it doesn't matter. Enjoy it
here.
One Last Top Ten
Top ten bushisms of 2004:
10. "I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a draft." —George W. Bush, second presidential debate, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8, 2004

And one — my worry is that it looks like it's from Canada, and it might be from a third world." —George W. Bush, second presidential debate, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8, 2004
8. "Free societies are hopeful societies. And free societies will be allies against these hateful few who have no conscience, who kill at the whim of a hat." —George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Sept. 17, 2004

4. "The march to war hurt the economy. Laura reminded me a while ago that remember what was on the TV screens — she calls me, 'George W.' — 'George W.' I call her, 'First Lady.' No, anyway — she said, we said, march to war on our TV screen." —George W. Bush, Bay Shore, New York, Mar. 11, 2004

See, if you're a small business owner or a large business owner and you're thinking about investing, you've got to be optimistic when you invest. 1. "Then you wake up at the high school level and find out that the illiteracy level of our children are appalling." —George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 2004

4. "...this band has a song with the following lyrics:
My hair's still wet, but the rain's let up
Why don't you call me, act like you give a fuck?"
3. "like they say in trainspotting, 'it's a fuckin' tightrope.'"
2. "that's fuckin brilliant. lets do eeeettt!"
1. "aight, i got all the upgrades up and running, no prob. if you didn't know, my audio hard drive crashed hard (physicly damaged). it was old and haggard, but the data will most likely be recoverable, for a price off course.

Most Important World Events of 2004
2004 was a huge year. Events happened the repercussions of which were felt worldwide. Some changed how we will view the future, some the present, and still others left us to look back on the past, sometimes sadly, sometimes fondly. And while such events can't be quantified, they can be listed. Here they are:
5. ODB + Drugs / Athletes + Steroids
Whether on the music scene or the sports scene, people were shocked to find out their idols aren't quite the upstanding citizens they had previously believed them to be. To say that the world populace was "rattled" would be an understatement.
4. The NBA Fight / Concert Shooting
Within a few weeks of each other, all rules about safety and the line between fans and entertainers were broken. There are no more lines. There is no fourth wall - or not one that can't be scaled anyway (or, in basketball, there is no "section"). Who knows what impact this'll have on the future of sports or music? R.I.P. "Dimebag" Darrell and that little Hispanic-looking dude who walked out onto the court.
3. Rick James Calls It Quits
"Superfreak" will never be heard the same again. There will always be a tinge of sadness, bitch.
2. Free Coffee Day At Blue Sky
You just walked in, picked up a cup, and poured your coffee. That was it. No paying, no dealing with behind-the-counter types, nothing. Best thing since "free scoop day" at new ice cream places. Revolutionary at the very least.
1. Creed Calls It Quits
Have you ever been happier? Seriously. I don't know what I can say about this except THANK GOD IT'S OVER.
Sin City Trailer
The Sin City
trailer is online. If you don't know, it's based on Frank Miller's noirish and gritty comic series of the same name. Robert Rodriguez directed but brought Mr. Miller on to co-direct. Looks pretty sweet to me.
Robo-Dave's New Hit Single, "Mexican Christmastime"

We've been promising this for the past week... Constant TDJ heckler, Robo-Dave, has finished his newest hit single.
Mexican Christmastime is now available.
Some of the lyrical content is
NSFW... but who cares, it's Robo-Dave. Screw NSFW!
If you're interested, you should check out Robo-Dave's 1st single,
Ponies Are Boss, as well.
Word On The Street: Broad Street
Under the "no duh" category... What's the assumption when a band has a huge buzz and is completely mum about their future? That's right: contract.
Well, in this case I can confirm from a pretty reliable source that the much-debated act
The Whigs indeed now have been tied to a major label. Can't say which one for fear of some sort of legal something or other; let's just say it's a fairly old company.
No word on what this'll translate to in terms of when we'll finally see an album, but don't expect anything to be released/sold until their official "debut".

Washingtonienne
A few months ago, a scandal hit the office of Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine (R) when one of his staffers started posting her sexual exploits on her blog. Apparently, she gave blog scoop on her affairs with several men, "
purporting to include a married (but unnamed) chief-of-staff in a federal agency, and discussed being paid for sex."
The blog was soon thereafter taken down, however a
cached version of the site is available.
Why am I posting this now? The staffer in the middle of this controversy, Jessica Cutler, is
coming out with a novel. Does this mean that they're just providing a print version of her blog?
Can you imagine if a print version of TDJ was made available? How boring!
Top Five Things of 2004
Well, I guess we are doing top five lists today, so I'll add mine as well, because I'm sure lots of people care.
1.
The Go! Team - Sounds like a hyperactive kindergarten class made some music. "The Power Is On!" is my favorite on their Thunder Lightning Strike album.
2.
The Kleptones - I really enjoyed their Queen/hip-hop mash-up thingee, A Night at the Hip-Hopera. I just noticed they've done Yoshimi Battles the Hip-Hop Robots (they call it Lip-Hop, ha ha).
3.
Baadasssss! - Mario Van Peebles tells the story of Melvin Van Peebles making Sweet Sweetback, and I loved every minute of it.
4.
Shaun of the Dead - I really liked Dawn of the Dead, but Shaun of the Dead just has it all. Worth repeat viewings.
5. Paying off my credit cards and quitting my second job.

Top Five Things I Discovered Criminally Late In 2004
5.
Interpol "Turn on the Bright Lights"
This album came out in 2002 and was on everyone's
best of 2002 list. I'm not sure why, but I refused to give 'em a shot in '02 (I think it was the suits). However, I finally got (i.e. downloaded) their album in '04 and have been spinning it constantly ever since.
4.
Ipod
I'm a cheapskate... I sat on buying an
ipod for two years. Finally took the plunge this year, and it's changed my life (seriously).
3.
Confederacy of Dunces
This is a book that most folks read when they're teenagers. Not me...
Can't wait for the movie.
2.
Dr. Strangelove
My roomie (Mail Clerk) owns this movie... and I've been meaning to watch it for quite a while. Finally did so this year, and felt silly for not having seen it before.
1.
Voting
In the past, I've always boycotted voting. I had the notion that I wasn't being given any real options between candidate A and candidate B. This was my third opportunity to vote in a presidential election, and the first time I chose to do so. What can I say? Dubya inspires me... just not in the way he'd hope.
So, there ya go... start makin' fun of me for being such a latecomer.
Top Five Of Athens Live 2004
There are certain nights when everything just clicks. Music, environment, sound, attitude, crowd (or lack thereof), etc. Although some details are definitely blurry and I'm sure there's stuff I'm forgetting, here are my favorite live experiences of the year...
Pylon - (The then-unnamed) Little King's Bar - 08/05
It's the performance that got us national publicity, but it's also the best show I've seen all year. To see hundreds of folks both within and outside the bar jumping up and down and having an amazing time listening to the sounds of a band that proves that they still had it many, many years later is a feeling I can't describe. It laughs in the face of other, much larger reunion stories of the year. In case you missed it,
here was our coverage at the time.
Ceiling Fan, Lona, Southern Bitch - Caledonia - 6/20 (AthFest)
The fact that the club was packed to the walls and hot as hell didn't thin the capacity crowd at all till the very end of the evening. Three of my favorite bands back to back feeding off the energized Saturday night crowd and sounding as good as I've ever heard that club sound. There were lots of other options that night, and certainly many got more publicity beforehand and afterwards but this was the highlight of my AthFest.
Hope For Agoldensummer - Healing Arts Centre - 5/22
The crowd was filled with hippies (you had to take your shoes off), the wine was really expensive, and the chairs were uncomfortable. That did not stop this from being, hands down, the best HFAGS performance of the year. Not only was it a perfect setlist with lots of surprises, but the room was dead quiet and all of it was done with very little amplification. It showed of a talented band with no effects in an ideal setting with lots of energy. Hard to beat.
The Sunshine Fix - Caledonia - 10/11
The band had just gotten off the road. This usually does one of two things: make them so damn tired that all they want to do is sleep and could give a crap less about performing, or make them so practiced and perfect that they're exponentially better than they were before they left. In this case, it was the latter. I had always liked this band, but I never thought they'd wind up on this list. But that night, their harmonies were perfect, there was an energy about the songs that wasn't there before, they broke out a few Olivia Tremor Control classics, and the cool video show didn't hurt either. Too bad only about 40 people (including the opening band) were there to see it.
Phosphorescent - GO Bar - 7/17
Okay, so the whole set was Fleetwood Mac covers. In fact, more specifically, they performed all of
Rumours and then re-played the opening track. People were packed in like sardines and many stood outside as well. Most of the songs were played perfectly and the crowd never thinned. At the end of the night everyone was sweaty but happy - so it didn't matter whose songs they were, that band owned them for that night. I've seen Phosphorescent give plenty of great performances of their own material, but nothing quite as incredible as this night was.
There are plenty of other memorable shows this year (Kimberly Morgan at Flicker, Annaray at IHOC, Don Chambers + GOAT at the Flagpole awards, Of Montreal at the Watt, DBT at the Watt, Todd McBride at Tasty World, Brown Frown at the UltraMod, Liz Durrett at Little King's, etc.), but for whatever reason, those're the ones that stick in my mind as I write this. Thanks to all the bands that make going out worth it.
Amityville Horror Still Gallery
ISEB.net has a big
still gallery up for
The Amityville Horror. There are some pretty good pictures there. Pic 4 is my favorite, of course. I shall endeavor to recreate pic 5 on my own fridge.
Beatallica
I think I've posted something about this before, but I can't really remember.
Regardless, waste some time today by checking out
Beatallica. It's Beatles classics performed Metallica-esque.
They've got some new MP3's up and they're definitely worth your time.
For All You Spelling Nuts

Challanges?
Super Mario Brothers on Ice
Jason Bateman and Alyssa Milano host the
Icecapades with Super Mario Brothers characters. Oh, and Mr. Belvedere is the evil guy, I think (the Grand Poobah or something? It's been awhile). The link goes straight to the movie, and you can skip most of it without missing much; the Bateman/Milano parts are the best. Their Nintendo actually gets a computer virus! Wow.
Athens Audio
If y'all missed that
benefit show at the
40 Watt on Monday, never fear. As always, Sloan Simpson was there to get it on tape. Not sure how it sounds (there was definitely a high chatter level in the early part of the show), but there's some really classic stuff in there - even some great Christmas treats like "Mrs. Claus' Kimono". You can
see the setlist and download the show here. And of course this is a limited time download.
As a sidenote, fans of
The Office may want to view the link with the show on it and scroll down a bit for a pretty funny icon.
In addition, there's some
R.E.M. demos up at Large-Hearted Boy.
(Thanks to Printmaker for the 40 Watt show!)
Elfin Magic
Want to annoy your nearby coworkers while entertaining yourself? Try this
Christmas Carol Maker. You can make elves sing a song you create. Takes a minute to get the hang of it, but eventually it's addicting.
(Sadly, I have to admit I found this via CollegeHumor.com.)
This Weekend In Athens
Last big weekend of the year and maybe for some time after (not counting New Year's)...
Finally, we get to use this picture again!
FRI: Another hard choice night. Starting with the
40 Watt Christmas Party, where you can see: Lil' Flip Scoldja (who I've never heard, but
Hillary seems to dig a lot), France Lite (
Je Suis France minus some of the above faces - Where art thou, Dark?), Joe Christmas (what
Summer Hymns was before they were Summer Hymns), and finally dance the rest of the evening away with
DJ Twin Powers. There's some difference in the Flagpole and 40 Watt listings, but maybe you'll see
Fairmount Fair too (read the comments below and maybe someone'll clarify).
Of course if that's not your scene (that is, if you're more into straight-up rock*), you can always head down the
Georgia Theatre to check out Donkey Punch,
The Stand-Ins, and
Lona. Lona's Christmas shows are always fun. And they sound great there too.
Finally, you can also see the much-buzzed-about Iron Hero and the instantly-charming
Venice Is Sinking at
Tasty World.
* = Not to imply that The France isn't.
One of these things is not like the other...
SAT: Some more disparate choices tonight. Early on, you can see Ralph Roddenbery & Friends at Seney-Stovall Chapel (right next to the Varsity). Doesn't happen often, and Ralph can play. Doors at 7:15, showtime at 8PM. Read
this Flagpole article or
this AthensMusic.com story for more info. For
way more info,
Or, of course, you can see The Wedding Band (instrumental cover band featuring folks from
Circulatory System) at
Flicker. Show starts at 8:30 PM.
Then, later on, if you like German Cabaret music, there's
Audition with Max Reinhardt at the
40 Watt. (Don Chambers does not seem to be listed on the bill anymore, apparently.)
But if you like heavier rock,
Brown Frown and
A play at the
Caledonia. One band that worships Harvey Milk and one that was Harvey Milk. Both will rock your face off. Read our recent interview with Brown Frown
here.
Lap Pillows
The Japanese "Lap Pillow" craze is somewhere between really, really funny and really, really sad.

Journey). Frightening.

More Gardner-riffic Christmas
More stuff up at the
GLFC for Christmas: A hilarious bit of comedy involving
the Chipmunks and Patton Oswalt, and one of my favorite local holiday recordings, the
Fairburn Royals doing "Silent Night". Let the chemically-enhanced Christmas offerings continue!

(Thanks to Allison for the heads up!)
Tonight In Athens
Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads play The Roadhouse tonight as part of the bar's annual "For The Kids" toy drive. Bring an unwrapped toy and get in free. Free t-shirts while they last and you can win prizes all night long. Good music, good cause, good gifts. See
this week's Threats & Promises and
this Banner article for more info.
Wonder Woman
Joss Whedon may be close to signing on to direct
Wonder Woman for a summer 2006 release, potentially passing on
X3. Personally, I'm more curious about who will be cast as Wonder Woman. I favor Catherine Zeta-Jones, but I doubt that will ever happen.
I'm Sure Y'all're Shocked...
The results are in:
ODB did drugs.
Watch How You Use The Term Tivo
TiVo... ahem... TiVo® DVR has gotten picky about
how people use their brand name. They insist that people use the term TiVo as an adjective, not a noun or verb.
In other words, don't say "I'm going to TiVo some porn"... say "I'm going to record some porn on my TiVo® DVR".
This
prevents the brand name from becoming diluted.
Have other companies begun to complain about their brand becoming a verb? I googled it, but couldn't find anything.
Robo-Dave Vs. Noodlers (Round 3?)
Some pretty classic Robo-Dave stuff is in the comments of a recent Lionz-related post at
AthensMusic.com. You'll have to scroll to find it (look for the picture in the article), but it's funny when you get there.
Trailers
There are a lot of trailers out there that look promising, but there are a few that I have caught over the past six months or so that have really peaked my interest. The trailers alone are worth seeing, so here they are, if you've missed them.
Born to Fight - My impression is that this Thai movie is like Seven Samurai with gymnast kung-fu badasses. The
trailer is really awesome; I didn't want it to end (sorry, you have to watch like a 1-second ad at this site; see below). Supposedly, no wires or CGI were used. The
trailer and a
featurette (which is worth the watch) are on the official site, but the links weren't working this morning; they may later, though (they were last night).
Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior - By the same director as
Born to Fight, Prachya Pinkaew, this trailer reminds me of direct-to-video eighties martial arts flicks, but it's got a definite edge. You can see the madness in the
trailer (large size). There's actually an
English-subtitled VCD available.
High Tension - AKA
Haute Tension, this slasher has generated lots of buzz, and the
trailer seems to live up to it.
Plus, the new
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer looks sweet in all sorts of ways.
Athens Music Video
You can now see the video for the first track of Kevn Kinney's new album at
his website. Takes a while to download, but I highly advise doing that instead of trying to stream it (so, for you windows users, that means right click and "save target as").
(Thanks to Jayne for the link.)
Bunny on MTV
Athens blogger, Bunny Mcintosh,
will be appearing on MTV's show "Room Raiders". Stay tuned to
her site for more info.
Magneto: The Pianist Meets X-Men
Or at least that's how the screenwriter of the possible new
Magneto movie puts it. From what I can find, Sheldon Turner did a rewrite on the new
Amityville Horror. He's also been involved in the remake of
The Longest Yard and the
Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel.
The Year's Best Singles
Something Awful lists the
Top 5 Singles of the Year (if you don't listen to rap, don't even bother reading this).
WWWD?

Tonight In Athens
I've been told each singer will do two songs and rotate - over several cycles with many folks playing on many other folks' songs. See
this post for individual artists' links. These are a lot of my favorite songwriters in town, so it oughta be a great night.
One More Computer Nerd Post for the Day
Google has a beta version of a new auto-complete function available. As you type your search, it suggests possible matches... cool stuff.
Go try it out...
Yet Another Reason To Switch To Firefox
You still using
IE? You are
sooooo 2002...
Here's another reason to switch to
Firefox (and this one's sort of TDJ related). The
PaNIC extension (Productivity and Networking Information Component) is "...useful for surprise visits from bosses. Allows you to quickly close all of your tabs but one, which immediately loads a pre-selected web site address, which to the casual observer, appears to be yet another of your tireless efforts of productivity for your employer. The default setting is a Google search for 'increasing workplace productivity'."
I recommend setting yours to

If I Had My Life To Life Over
A touching reflection by the late Josiah Odenkirk.
Why Nerds are Unpopular
Wired has a nice editorial about
why nerds are unpopular. It's basically a nerd trying to make himself feel better about his nerd-dom.
Since the overwhelming majority of day-jobbers are nerds, I thought you might want to read about your unpopularity.
This Weekend In Athens
Things're slowing a bit, but everyone's gettin' their last show of the year in before the January lull...
A Foxy Rocker
FRI: Hope For Agoldensummer headlines the
40 Watt. It's been a good year for them, riding the wave of a great album (
I Bought A Heart Made Of Art In The Deep, Deep South), which actually sold well. They took a bit of time off this fall, and are apparently now back. If you haven't seen 'em yet, make sure to catch this show. They'll likely sit atop many local 'Best Of' lists soon.
Also, at
Nuci's Space, there's a
Marshmallow Coast performance and some holiday event called "Foxy Rock-It" which features
Ballard Lesemann (amongst others). It starts promptly at 8PM. See
this Flagpole article for more info.
SAT: Another local soft-on-the-ears pleaser,
Phosphorescent will headline the
Caledonia. Coming off an apparently impressive solo set last weekend featuring new material, the full band will perform tonight with the return of
Viva and
Annie & Her Guns. See
this Flagpole article on Phosphorescent for more details.
Before all that, however
Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars will perform at the Go Bar at 9PM. It'll be outdoors if possible. See the former
Squalls singer play more traditional music. Interesting at the very least.
CNN vs. Local Newscasters
From a story on CNN about
Dan Rather's possible replacements:
CBS Chairman Les Moonves said last week. "Anything can happen. We may bring in the cast of 'Friends.'" Hmmmm ... six co-anchors? Unwieldy. But what about signing any of the out-of-work former stars of "Seinfeld"? They could do a newscast about nothing. (Wait -- that's what local newscasters do.)
Ohhhhh.... snap.
Flip Spiceland,
Wes Sarginson,
Monica Kaufman... you gonna let them call you out like that???
Ryan Reynolds as Wally West
In a
video interview, David Goyer, right off of work on
Blade: Trinity and co-writing chores on
Batman Begins, discusses a possible Flash movie. If you don't want to wade through video, here are the basics: Warner Brothers owns the Flash character. David Goyer just signed a deal with Warner and will be directing a picture for them. He can't, for whatever reason, really discuss the Flash right now, wink wink. Does he think that Ryan Reynolds would make a good Wally West? Yes. Will Advisor watch the movie just to see Ryan Reynolds in a skin-tight costume? Yes.
Quad-Dwellers Won't Be Breeding

AMdC Updates
If you haven't dropped by
AthensMusic.com in the last few days, they've offered
pictures and brief reviews from last weekend, audio and reviews from
the new Fairburn Royals album The Whistler, and
invited TDJ's frequent-commenter Robo-Dave to wreak havoc in their comments. So, you know, watch the comments section there for more fun.
Daily Dose of Do-Overs
According to
Nixflix, Hideo Nakata (director of
Ringu 1 and
2 and the U.S. film
The Ring Two will remake the 1981 Barbara Hershey film
The Entity for a 2006 release, following tons and tons of other remakes.
In other news, Fangoria has finally updated both their
Film Forecast and
Video Chopping List. The Film Forecast was over a year out-of-date, and the Chopping List has been very slowly updated, but perhaps they have decided to get on the ball with their useful (I think) guides to upcoming genre films in theaters and on video.
They've also got a recent
interview with Clive Barker where he talks about wanting to buy back the rights to
Hellraiser and
Candyman to save them from direct-to-video dullness (and the hopes of a
Nightbreed director's cut on DVD).
Should Spiderman Be Allowed To Marry?
All Things Flash has some pretty funny stuff up - like
Gangsta Jedi. They even
question Spiderman's sexual orientation.

Something Awful On Awful Things
Something Awful's continued its 2-part series
on music magazines and also added a great new article on
2004's Greatest Hits Albums.
Tonight In Athens
Le Tigre
A rare appearance by Nutria tonight at the
Caledonia. The band features a few members of
The Possibilities and doesn't stray too far from that territory (that is, well-crafted, very catchy pop songs). I wish they'd play out more, but supposedly they're working on an album. Can't wait.
A coupla' interesting outta' towners tonight as well. First of which is the lineup at
Tasty World. Atlanta alt-hip-hop acts
Psyche Origami and
Minamina Goodsong perform a make-up date for a hurricane-plagued previous engagement. Rare that good hip-hop makes it up here, so if you like it, go.
Finally, if you like new wave and feminism, then
Le Tigre will rock your socks off at the Watt. Just be warned: you'll be surrounded by people who are into new wave and feminism.
UPDATE: Le Tigre has postponed their show. The other two bands will still play a free show tonight so if you love opening bands... ah, forget it.
Above photo will be left in place because I find it funny.
Cap Popped in Pantera's Ass
I'm sure you've already heard about this by now...
The guys from Pantera recently broke up and formed a new band called
Damageplan (great band name). Last night in Columbus, Ohio during their show at the Alrosa Villa nightclub a gunmen stormed the stage and
killed 4 people. One of those killed was guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.
This story isn't funny... but, I did sorta chuckle when I read the nickname "Dimebag" on CNN.com
Amityville Trailer Online
The trailer for the remake of
The Amityville Horror is
online. It stars
Ryan Reynolds, whom I would do.
I really wanted to see the little girl's imaginary friend, Jodie, the pig with glowing eyes. The rain is promising, though, because it means Ryan will be wet a lot and may have to take off his clothes.
Ryan's also got that
Blade: Trinity coming out today, which stars him shirtless, sweaty, and shackled to the ground.
Suicide Pushers
Some people in Japan, and I imagine other places, have decided to commit suicide after going to suicide sites on the web that give information on the best ways to off themselves. Many get together in groups to make their suicides less lonely (I guess that's the motive!). More interestingly, there are
suicide pushers who try to get the emotionally fragile to give up and use the final solution. And they do it for free.

Warren Ellis Does JLU
Warren Ellis, probably in just about every comic fan's top five list of comic writers, has penned an episode of Justice League Unlimited titled "Dark Heart" dealing mainly with the character of The Atom. It airs this Saturday, Dec. 11, at 8:30 PM on Cartoon Network, so don't forget to set your VCRs and Tivos and such if you're interested.
Editorial: Bad Suburban Names
Obviously in my line of work I see a lot of names. Enough Elizabeths and Johns to last a lifetime. So, when names stick out, I take notice. Sure, ghetto-fab names are funny for a while, but even they get boring. But what I don't get tired of are bad suburban names. They're the worst. If someone gave me one of those names, I'd go to court and change it asap.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't believe there's not a website dedicated to identifying and fighting this deadly disease. For those not familiar, here's several examples I've collected over the past few months:
Male: Embry, Cody, Jordan, Taylor, Carson, Tyler, Con(n)or, Brock, Brice, Chase, Lance, Reese, Thad
Female: Mackenzie, Madison, Carson, Savannah, Kennedy, Jordan
You'll notice the list doesn't specifically include the previously-discussed issue of wealthy Southern elites giving their sons women's names (i.e. Lindsey, Ashley, etc.). If anyone has any additions, please comment away. It's all in an effort to help prevent this problem in the future.
And for those already stricken, my sincere condolences.
More Bob Clark
Bob Clark seems to insinuate himself into many of my posts, and I just saw another news item of interest today that included him: Eli Roth (director of Cabin Fever, which I personally love but is hated by many) will remake Bob Clark's 1974 film Dead of Night (for some reason referred to
here as Dead Man Walking from 1972; the USA reissue title is Deathdream). The original definitely has a good creep factor and is newly relevant since it was a bit of a comment on the effects of war back home, especially when veterans return.
The article states that this is the second remake of the Bob Clark film, but I'm not aware of a previous remake. I could be wrong. I'm hopeful that the Eli Roth part of the article is at least correct.

Large-Hearted Boy provides
a link to a 2002 Vic Chesnutt show in Atlanta. I assume Sloan taped it, so thanks also to him.

Wes Anderson
Salon has
a nice interview with Wes Anderson about his new movie "
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou".
Before you say it... Yes I know... Salon.com wants you to be a member. However, you can get the "Free Site Pass" by watching the short advertisement. It doesn't hurt, I promise.
Flagpole on Blogs
Flagpole has another
round-up of local blogs this week.
I don't mean to complain, but just about every blog in Georgia has been mentioned... except us. Think it has to do with all the
fisking columns?
No matter... they have a nice write up of our gal,
Hillary. They say:
"Many blogs reference outside source material — some lean on it exclusively — but not many can be as link-happy as this one and still tender this many home-brewed laffs. Its dry, witty curator (who moonlights as Athensworld's most suave contributor) has ideas about lots of things, and does the Lexis-Nexis research to back ‘em up."
Hillary... kickin' ass... takin' names.
Tonight In Athens
Josh Jordan & Craig Lieske perform together at
Flicker tonight. A coupla' your favorite 40 Watt employees playing improvised music or soundscapes or whatever you wanna call it. Starts at 8:30 PM.
Practice What You Preach
Wow, a
hypocritical Christian! Frickin' shocker.
I wonder which Christians will love him anyway and hate the sin but love the sinner. Are there any Christian centers to "cure" pedophilia, or is homosexuality the only thing they're concerned about? Or do fundamentalist Christians consider them practically the same?
Comment!

Rock Your Body Armor
The stank from Hollywood just got stankier. Justin Timberlake will play Iron Man, according to
CHUD.com. Oh well, at least he will get beaten up by super-villains. I'll be surprised if they actually have the mask obscure his face. Oh well, I didn't have high hopes for the Iron Man movie anyway.
Let Them Sing It For You
This is a
handy dandy little tool that enables you to write lyrics for a song and some of the world's greatest singers will sing it for you.
Interview: Brown Frown
For years now, the miscreants in Brown Frown have been terrorizing Athens house parties and clubs with loud, sloppy, but somehow appealing music that's simultaneously capable of making ears bleed and people jump up and down. Sometimes they are dodging band members during a foray into the crowd, sometimes they are "rocking out".
Recently, they've recorded a new album ("Romans"), changed their line-up, and updated their amazing website (the old version of which was recently mentioned by Computer Support as a favorite local band website) with new pics, songs, and other things. We tracked down four out of the five members (apparently Sweeney is busy with a child or something) and pestered their drunk asses with questions. The answers below represent a scattering of replies we got back. One word of warning though: Anything associated with this band is not work-safe. Enjoy...
So, y'all've been off a while and made a lot of changes. Update us on what's gone on with Brown Frown since the last show.
Andrew: Since the last show ... well ... we pissed Jerimiah off pretty good last time we played in Augusta. ... so, we have new guitar players. Also we are all Christians now, so as you might guess, the music has taken on an edgier feel.
Matt: Also Andrew and I went on tour earlier this month as the rhythm section for The Visitations.
Bubba: The average height of the band has increased, and the guitars are better.
BJ: [And] "Fire" (of Earth & Wind fame) has joined the fray.
Have y'all changed musically? If so, how? For someone who's never heard y'all, what do you sound like?
Andrew: Nastier and nastier. We sound like Jesus Lizard with way too many buttrock solos. Apparently the vocals sound like Bush and Pearl Jam. But I don't listen to hip hop, so I don't know.
Matt: We now sound like five fat drunk guys with beards making angry music for adolescents, even though two of us aren't really fat and Sweeney doesn't even have a beard. And our average age is now hovering somewhere around 30, so go figure.
Bubba: We always sound better that you would expect.
BJ: Cross between Starlight Vocal Band and that sound that corduroys make when you're running really fast and a hairdryer.
How was the recording experience?
Andrew: Well, slow. ... Asa and Eric at Skylab are both incompetent mongaloids. If I had it to do over again, I would record with Chris Bishop because he is a fellow Christian. However, Asa and Eric made us sign a contract that said we would work only with their stupid asses.
Matt: Recording was fun, mixing sucks.
Bubba: So far it seems expensive, but it sounds great and we have a lot of fun with Asa and Eric.
BJ: Stupendous. Music good.
If you were all to fight, who would beat the living hell from the others and wind up the champion?
Andrew: Kevin Sweeney is an amateur boxer in his spare time. When he massages me, I can really tell the enormous strength of his forearms. His third arm is disgusting and frightening. In short, Bubba would win.
BJ: I think Sweeney is versed in the art of sorcery, so he's the clear favorite, but Matt can throw a 100 mph "turdball", so unless you can catch it, it hurts.
Matt: It would definitely come down to me and Bubba, although Kevin has a baby now so he would probably fight like he had more to live for. I'm going with Bubba.
Bubba: I think I'm the only one with a gun, so smart money would bet on me.
Are audiences ready for the new "3 guitar attack" version of Brown Frown?
Bubba: Who cares?
Matt: Is a rapist prepared for the "pepper spray attack" of his potential victim? No sympathy for the devil.
Andrew: What audience? No one comes to our shows. If they do, they are there for the beer...
BJ: Actually we've paper-mached one huge guitar that we can all climb on and diddle on. It's got 162 strings. Eat your heart out Peter Frampton. And yes, people will be ready.
What's your favorite way to waste time at work?
Matt: I shoot rubber bands at Norah Jones at one job and just get drunk at the other.
Bubba: Stare at Cora's ass.*
What's the likelihood that Andrew will remove at least one article of clothing during the upcoming show?
Matt: Is "his last shred of dignity" considered an article of clothing?
Bubba: He uses body paint, so he never actually wears clothes. The nakedness comes from his sweat.
BJ: According to Nielsen polls it's around 87.5% in the pool of people who give a s#!+. C'mon.
Andrew: I hope I take someone else's clothes off.
What's up for the future of Brown Frown? Is the album mastered or ready to go? Is there a title/tracklist?
BJ: Golden corral dinner. No. Who's asking? Where did you get this number?
Andrew: It's not ... mastered. Tracklist: gabriel loves steve pew, romans, dead whore, in god we thrust, missionary, spooky old stairs, simple, red tide, vespa fagit, snuFFrape.
Why do you hate our freedom?
Andrew: I hate our freedom because freedom isn't free and all I gots is sixty-nine cents.

Tonight In Athens
Donkey Punch headlines
Tasty World. Loud, fast, Southern punk rock. Really fun - if you can sit through the thousand other bands opening. Look for their new album (working title:
Hell's Best-Kept Secret) sometime soon. It's great.
Chris Tucker Interview
Athensworld.com has a nice little interview with WUOG's Chris Tucker...
He's the 90.5 DJ that was described in
a comment on our site as "that dude that can barely talk or sounds like he's dying of throat cancer."
Thanks to Robi for the link.
Halloween 9 Rumor
For those of you that care, there is a very, very unconfirmed rumor that Bob Clark may direct Halloween 9. I don't really put much stock in this, because it's from
IMDB. Also, apparently the working subtitle is "The Blood of Michael Myers." Whatever the title, it shouldn't be hard to top Halloween: Resurrection, which was anything but. Bob Clark would be a good choice for a sequel (at least there's no word of a remake yet). Nowhere else is confirming these rumors, and I've checked many places, so take it with a grain of salt.
GLFC: Where Your Vote Counts
Gardner has recently posted
an announcement as to when Round 2 of Everything Idol (the ongoing competition to determine the best thing ever) will finally begin. This of course means that time is running out to
nominate things for competition.
While you're over there though you can vote in
Qualifying Round Heat 35, download
a coupla' holiday songs, and buy some
new swag for your loved ones or yourself. Gotta say, I'm liking the new
GLFC.
Damn Ninjas
I would totally give
this guy money.
John Waters' 10 Best Films of 2004
John Waters weighs in with his ten favorite films of 2004 over at
artforum. For some reason some markedly lesser names than John Waters also give their lists. Their descriptions of some of the more obscure and artsy films are unintentionally funny.
