Freud Shows Up At Jacko Trial

Couldn't help it... that sign's just too funny in context. Also, who are these people that just take off from work to stand outside the Jackson trial? Also, cancer victim? Seriously?

In similar celebs-behaving-badly news, "Snoop's Upside Yo' Head" in a whole new way.

The American Office

Hollywood man-in-the-know Gardner Linn has seen the pilot for the American version of The Office. His thoughts are here.

Sunny Taylor Interview

Sunny Taylor is a local painter who you guys oughta love. She has a wonderful painting of Vic Chestnutt (which was previously mentioned here) that was recently displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. However, that painting is only the tip of the iceberg. She's really got some beautiful work.

While looking at her portfolio, I was under the false impression that she was much older than me... I was surprised to learn that she's only 22. I think that's a compliment... Means she comes across as wise in her paintings.... Not that you can't be wise at 22... ok... I'm rambling on.

Athens is lucky to have her around...

So, I asked Kitchen Supervisor (a friend of Sunny's) to do a quick e-mail interview with her. Here's what she says...

Why do you paint?

Sunny- i guess because i have to. if i didn't i think i'd be far more confused and grumpy than i am now. although painting is incredibly frustrating, so i'm not sure how it works. painting really is just a way of expressing and so i think i paint to express a part of me i can't communicate through any other means.

What made you move back to Athens after three years in NYC?
Sunny-it was expensive there and things were changing. my friends were moving, i was at a pause in my art and my own growth, and as hard as it was- because i absolutely love ny- i think i just felt like i needed to move home to athens again to finish stuff up, like school and such, so that when i go back, i'll be more prepared. it was just time for a move.

After growing up in Athens and now living and working here as an adult, do you think there are some quality things happening right now with art in Athens?
Sunny-there is quality stuff- i just went to a great little art exhibit tonight actually. but it is also sometimes stifling and small. Athens is definitely supportive though. As far as talent and such, it is all about individuals. there are many uniquely amazing individuals here and that is largely what makes the quality things happen. There do seem to be some great places too- the 40 Watt, Caledonia, and Nuci's Space, for music, and ATHICA, Elements Art Supplies, Lyndon House, etc, for art. I'm on the board of ATHICA, which has been a neat experience- although there is a lot of envelope stuffing and such things- but i do think places such as ATHICA and the music venues, are great resources to let those individual characters shine through. i spend an awful lot of time in my own house and little bubble though, so i may not be the best person to ask.

What do you think of corporations providing so much money for art these days?
Sunny-i think individual artists need to just put there foot down, even if it means a loss in profit or opportunity by not selling to chase bank, or phillip morris. it is such a huge disturbing area- if the powers that be really manage to co-opt and privatize art, i don't know where we'll be, but it sure won't be sincere or soulful.

What are some of your current projects?

Sunny-my friend and i are trying to start an organization to send art supplies to different places in need. our first project is going to be for people effected by the tsunami. i'm having a show in atl right now and our first real event
is going to be an artshow auction to raisemmoney. its on feb 3rd during the opening for my exhibit.

Here is all the info for her exhibit:

Icy Landscapes

Anyone got any good pics from this weekend? I found a couple via Athens World, but they're just close-ups (could be Anywhere, U.S.A.). If you find some, post 'em in the comments below or e-mail 'em to us.

This Weekend In Athens

Why do things happen at the same time?

Royals (Rockin' the hell outta happy hour.)
FRI: Fresh off their second massive robbery in less than a year, Camper Van Beethoven comes back to Athens for the first time since their great performance at AthFest. They're headlining the 40 Watt. Also, Flagpole chatted them up recently. I don't have to tell you they're great.

However, there's another great show at Nuci's Space that night. Astra, the Fairburn Royals, and Commander Chameleon will play there, starting at 10 PM. I don't know anything about the latter, but Flagpole says Astra's great (a "Band to Watch in 2005"), and The Fairburn Royals just got rave reviews in Southeast Performer and Stomp and Stammer this month. For more info, check out this page.

Finally, the always charming Venice Is Sinking is playing at The Caledonia as well. Too bad we have to choose between these three shows.

WVTS (Bigfoot not included.)
SAT: We Versus The Shark, whose new album Ruin Everything! was just released nationally, will play Tasty World as part of the Fluke Comics Festival. They start early (10-ish), so show up then to catch 'em. (Show up a might bit earlier and you can catch the trapeze folks who're also awesome.)

Also, Craig Lieske (Garbage Island) and Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System, Japancakes, Elf Power, etc.) will be playing an improv set at Flicker. Don't know the time, but you know the shows there are always early.

Later that night, you can shake ass to DJ Twin Powers and The Krush Girl(s) at the Watt.

Awful Genres

Something Awful picks apart genres, sub-genres, and the musicians who dwell in them.

Athens Audio

Saturday night's Truckers show is now up for your downloading pleasure. That night highlighted Pizza Deliverance and featured former Trucker Rob Malone as a guest, and at some point Dave Marr wandered on stage. Good times. Click here to check it out.

In Stores Now

The new album by Don Chambers and GOAT is finally out now. It popped up at their Friday show opening for the Truckers and is now available at both Flicker (where you can get it from the man himself) and Lo Yo Yo Stuff. It's cheaper at the former, but you can charge it at the latter.

Here's the tracklist:
1. underwater
2. snake root
3. sweetest flower
4. skin of my teeth
5. florida vacation
6. devil bucket
7. ravens
8. red in the face
9. pay no mind
10. goat

Don't know where you can hear it (besides live), but it follows the same sound of Donnie's first release, Back In The Woods. Of course, we rave about them enough so you know it's recommended.

Classic Films

If you hadn't seen the posters or TV ads, Thursday is the start of Robert Osborne's Classic Film Festival. The whole thing begins tomorrow night with Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and will continue with several films/panels/special guests through Sunday's showing of Casablanca. To see the whole schedule, click here. It takes place at the Classic Center.

Don't Mess With Pig

Everyone in my office was talking about this happening all day yesterday. Apparently, this guy's nickname really is "Pig". Also, the fact that he keeps a shotgun in his overalls is way cool. I'm sure Hillary will have more to say on the matter later as well.

The Travis and Jonathan Online Oscar Nomination Party (a day late)

I received an e-mail from a couple of Californians yesterday. At first, I thought it was spam... and it still might be. However, I watched their online Oscar nomination party and it was pretty damned funny... so I had to pass it along. Here's the email:

TRAVIS: Hello everybody! I'm Travis Harmon....

JONATHAN: And I'm Jonathan Shockley!

TRAVIS: Come watch our Oscar nomination party!

JONATHAN: It's free of charge!

TRAVIS: We're not from Athens, but we lived in Nashville for awhile.

JONATHAN: You could drive from one to the other!

TRAVIS: Now we live in Los Angeles.

JONATHAN: Now, Travis. Let's not bore our new friends.

TRAVIS and JONATHAN: Happy Oscar Nomination Day, everybody!!!

Athens Audio, Music News, & Pics

The Southern Bitch show from Saturday night (opening for DBT at the Watt) is up now, thanks as always to Sloan Simpson. If you wanna get it or see the setlist click here. Up only for a limited time. And if you haven't heard 'em before, go preview their album here.

In slightly-related news, Dave Marr (formerly of the Star Room Boys) will be making a return to the stage of sorts to play an acoustic show with Patterson Hood and Don Chambers at Flicker in a coupla' weeks. Price is steep ($20), but it's a tsunami benefit, so that's cool. Hope all 60 people that will likely get to see it enjoy it. Hope I'm one of 'em. For more info, see this page.

Finally, DBT show pics here.

Pumped Up

With cancer down, Sarah moves onto the next phase of her life: new boobs.

Jenna Bush

For all those with immoderate crushes on the girl...

I Need Your Help

I'm calling on all visitors to thedayjobs.com to help me out with my fiance. You see, she's obsessed with bad TV shows. She watches every single reality TV show that you could possible imagine, including the Bachelorette, Real World/Road Rules Challenge, America's Next Top Model, The Amazing Race, etc etc etc.

When she's not watching reality TV, she's watching makeover shows... Ultimate Extreme Home Makeover, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, What Not to Wear, Designers Challenge, Designer Guys, etc etc etc.

When she's not watching reality TV or makeover shows, she's watching cooking shows...

But worst of all... she's obsessed with Entertainment Tonight. That's the lowest of the low.

I'M GOING CRAZY!!!

So, how do I break her of this? She's a smart girl... much too smart for most of these shows... Do I bribe her? Maybe I should just blow our TV's up? Should I forget to pay the cable bill next month? Should I threaten to break off the engagement?

What do ya'll suggest?

UPDATE: The GF has something to say about this.

Tonight In Athens

Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars play the music of Scottish poet Robert Burns. Today is the anniversary of said poet's birth. Thus, they're playing at Little Kings at 9PM. Flagpole says this, while The Banner says this. And for good measure, here's where you can read Burns' writings.

Babies Of Rock

Wanna know what your favorite rock star looked like as a kid? Check out this site. It's in Portuguese, but you'll get the point. Even if you don't care, it's worth it for the Noel Gallagher one (are those eyebrows real?).

(Link stolen from Memepool.)

Athens Audio

Never one to wait on these things, Sloan Simpson's got the audio for Friday night's Drive-By Truckers show up already. Supposedly, it was the best of the three nights (Patterson called it "one of the best nights of [his] life"). Former Trucker Adam Howell stopped by to play the show with 'em (which, for those familiar, means they played "Late For Church" for the first time in a very long time). Check out the setlist and download it here (for a limited time, obviously).

Weird News Day

My being out of the office doesn't stop weird news from happening:

Some guy really doesn't want to do his summer reading list this year, SpongeBob's trying to make kids gay (tell me the caption guy doesn't have a sense of humor), and of course there was a giant South American baby.

(Thanks to Vet Pharmacist for the links!)

That Billboard on Broad Street That You've All Noticed

I'm sure that at some point you've all noticed this billboard for James Hugh Potts II on Broad Street. Well, I finally went to the guy's site, and now I have my own JHPII desktop wallpaper.

Is he a professional wrestler? Or maybe a baptist youth minister? Or a world musician? Or a soap opera star? Surely he's not a lawyer... right?

Make sure you reload his page a few times, he's got a random glamour shot generator.

Robo-Dave + Bunny Mcintosh

Robo and Bunny got together earlier this week to work on a little music. Bunny's already mentioned it on her site... and today Robo-Dave sent me this e-mail about the collaboration:

"last night we brought this Bunny Mcintosh chick out to our studio to lay down some fuckin tracks. She was a bit startled when she realized how deviant and depraved ROBO DAVE's world is. But she soon succombed to the lure of our sound, with the help of johnny bottle - O -wine. THanks Johnny!! We went for a dance beat song. But more along the lines of dancing in berlin strung out on heroin lost in an alley getting kicked in the face by your mommy!! Thats just how we roll! I've got to record one more thing on the song. That thing is going to consist of real audio of me putting on one of my grandmothers dresses chasing my grandfather around until he pukes on my feet. Then we'll release it!"

Sounds great! As soon as the Robo/Bunny song is available on the Web, we'll let ya know...

Olivia Tremor Control - Don't Call It A Comeback

Well, it turns out that the rumor printed in last week's flagpole is true. Olivia Tremor Control is reuniting for this year's All Tomorrow's Party. Jon Fernandes sent Pitchforkmedia.com an e-mail confirming it, which led to this story.

Don't know why Jon didn't send the e-mail to us... but that's ok... no grudges.

So anyways, what we need to do now is start an e-mail campaign to convince OTC to play an Athens show to warm up for ATP...

This Weekend In Athens

Let there be rock...

FRI: As mentioned everywhere several times over, The Drive-By Truckers continue their three-night stand at the Watt with Centro-Matic as well. And they've gotten two incredible opening bands lined up as well. Tonight's is Don Chambers + GOAT. SouthernGothicWhiskeyBanjo Music. It's awesome.

And if rock's your thing, but that price/crowd isn't, there's also The Tom Collins & Acetate at the Caledonia. More great straight-ahead rock.

SAT: Again with DBT & Centro, but this time with opening band Southern Bitch. If you would miss this show, you don't like to (Southern) rock and that's all there is to it (or the show was sold out - one of the two). I don't think there's much more we can say around here about how much we like Southern Bitch (or Donnie C, for that matter) - but if you haven't heard 'em yet, you can check out stuff from their new album freshly posted on AthensMusic.com.

Also tonight, for those who like their rock with more math, Heros Severum returns to the stage at the Caledonia with the buzz-band of late last year (which I've yet to see), Iron Hero. Flagpole's got a bit to say about Heros Severum's return.

Corpse Bride Trailer

The trailer for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, due out Halloween this year, can now be viewed online.

Drive By Truckers - 3 Nights in a Row?

Please tell me that all of you's Drive By Truckers freaks aren't going to see 'em 3 nights in a row!!???! Isn't that too much southern-ness for one week?

Printmaker? Jayne? Mail Clerk? Ya'll go last night? Goin' all 3 nights? If so, why?

Halloween 1 & 2 Locations Revisited [Part 2]

The Horror Channel has put up the second part to Horror's Hallowed Grounds: Halloween 1 & 2 article. You can check it out here.

Please note that some of the Halloween II pictures marked as 1981 and 2005 appear to be reversed.

Crystal Lake Memories

I'm a huge Friday the 13th fan, so everyone will just have to suffer through this. There are two Friday the 13th books coming out this year, Making Friday the 13th: The Legend of Camp Blood (supposed to be out at the end of this month) and Crystal Lake Memories, which has just set it's release date (from the newsletter):

"The wait is finally over! CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES: 25 YEARS OF 'FRIDAY THE 13TH' will see its official North American retail release on October 24th, 2005!"

Newsletter subscribers such as myself will have the chance to get autographed copies, and you can bet I'll be getting mine.

Jason Lives!!!

The Bulldog Kidnapping--The Aftermath: The Exclusive Interview

Please see this article for a little backstory. Thurston was found in a senator's yard, dropped off there by a drunk guy.

ADVISOR: We know you created Thurston, but can you describe your relationship a little more?
SCOTT SOSEBEE: Well, Thurston was actually named after Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. His last name (LaDonnahue) was spawned by scooch-pooch punk rockers, the LaDonnahs. Having said this, I would like to clarify that his name has nothing to do with our relationship.

I haven't seen Thurston in eight months since I moved. We were not speaking when I left athens because I slept with his boyfriend. I feel just horrible about the whole thing.

ADVISOR: How did you first hear the news that Thurston had been kidnapped? How did it make you feel?
SCOTT: The Vice President of Athens First emailed me immediately. I was horrified because I feared that his kidnappers may kill him and he would die without us ever reconciling.

ADVISOR: Those hours while Thurston was missing and you knew about it must have been hard on you emotionally. How are you holding up now that he's recovered?
SCOTT: Everyone at my office was pulling for Thurston. My co-workers kept me in high spirits. When I received the email that he had been recovered, my boss bought me a chocolate cake and a bottle of grey goose.

We both got drunk and dropped most of the cake on floor. We passed out on the conference room table and when we awoke we saw that the president's dog ate the cake from the floor and died shortly after of doggie chocolate poisoning. How Ironic, huh?

ADVISOR: What will you do when you next see Thurston?
SCOTT: Well, Athens First is hiring someone to touch-up his boo-boos from the incident, so I will probably inspect him for the new paint blemishes right after I sniff his ass.

Top 10 Paranormal Events of 2004

The Horror Channel reveals them here. Some are more mysterious than others, but the article is a good time-waster.

Vic's Supermarket

More details are starting to emerge about Vic Chesnutt's new album, Ghetto Bells. New West Records has updated their Vic Page to include some details about it.

In addition, the tracklist and credits appeared on a Vic mailing list yesterday:

1. Virginia
2. Little Ceaser
3. What Do You Mean?
4. Got To Me (aka 'Corrosion Of Valor' on Parlor Games)
5. Ignorant People (aka 'Wet Lungs' on Parlor Games)
6. Forthright
7. To Be With You
8. Vesuvius
9. Rambuctious Cloud
10. The Garden
11. Gnats

Musicians:
Bill Frisell-Guitar
Van Dyke Parks- Keyboards
Liz Durrett- Backing Vocals
Don Huffington- Drums
Dominic Genova- Double Bass
Tina Chesnutt- Electric Bass

Produced by John Chelew (Donovan, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson, Blind Boys of Alabama)

Still no word on whether or not that album that he recorded with John Keane after Is The Actor Happy will ever be released. But director Peter Sillen's site now says that Speed Racer: Welcome to the World of Vic Chesnutt is coming to DVD "with about 50 minutes of extra footage is due out in early 2005". Guess we'll wait and see on those.

And what about the rumored Jeff Mangum / Vic Chesnutt recordings? Anyone?

(Please Note: The above painting is not the album cover, but it is a really cool story. Click it to read about a local artist who won phat cash with it. Read Vic's thoughts on all that here. Thanks to Jayne for the info and link!)

Tonight In Athens

Method Actor

Firstly, as if I had to mention it, the Drive-By Truckers begin their first of three nights playing the 40 Watt with Centro-Matic in tow. Tonight's opening act is experimental group Garbage Island who will be loud and good (check out those song titles). As a sidenote, all three nights benefit Nuci's Space and there's a raffle to benefit tsunami victims where you can win Patterson's old SG.

Another way to help would be to go rock out with Acetate at the Georgia Theatre. It's a side-project, but it rocks. Dave Schools, Kevin Sweeney, and Ben Mize are the line-up. The music is a little like old ZZ Top without the beards and latter day politicking. Plus, they're helping tsunami folks with this show as well. If you don't like old ZZ Top, please ignore that reference.

Finally, before both of those shows you can see Vic Varney return to the stage at Flicker. A founding member of legendary Athenians The Method Actors, Varney's a really great solo writer/performer ... and probably a little crazy (which of course, makes the music better). He talked to Flagpole recently. Show starts at 8:30 PM.

(Also, sorry for dropping the ball on the Carrie Nations / Marriage tsunami benefit show last night. Hope some of y'all caught it. And I sincerely hope no one's dependent on this site in any way as a reliable source of information.)

Crispin Hellion Glover's What Is It?

This may have been around the block before, since someone on IMDB apparently saw it back in 1999, but it's listed as a 2005 movie, so I'm taking the risk. Crispin Glover has written, produced, directed, and starred in a film entitled What Is It? You can see the trippy trailer here. IMDB gives the tagline as "Being the adventures of a young man whose principle interests are snails, salt, a pipe, and how to get home. As tormented by an hubristic, racist inner psyche." Sounds like something that drugs would enhance enormously, although snails + salt is fun on its own. Apparently the release is at Sundance this month.

New Fantastic Four Trailer

There's a new Fantastic Four trailer around.

I have been completely sold on Ioan Gruffudd as Mr. Fantastic, because he is H-O-T hot, as is Chris Evans as the Human Torch. Besides being able to stretch any part of his body, Ioan was recently Lancelot in King Arthur, which I will be renting immediately. He also appeared in a series of TV movies called Hornblower. He is perfect for me. And so is Chris Evans, who was in the aptly-titled The Perfect Score.

I will keep my fantasy about the Terrific Trio to myself.

Bill Gates in Teen Beat (1983)

Apparently, Billy Gates did a photo spread for Teen Beat in 1983. Check it out.

P's Picks

Large-Hearted Boy lists Patterson Hood's picks as of late. Hard to argue with that list. And as always, stop by Nine Bullets for all your DBT audio/video needs.

The Little Bride

Our good friend, "Dry Cleaner", gave us a nice little comic for all to enjoy this morning.

Last week, he took some old aluminum parts to that recycling place on Hwy 441. When they handed him his money, they also gave him a little Christian propaganda. It's a heart wrenching tale that you'll all enjoy... in fact, it left me with several questions:

They had culdesacs in Biblical times?
Are all Muslims as scary as Amir?
Do all teachers look like witches?
Was the Virgin Mary really that hot?
Why were those Muslims rushing off to the airport?
Was that the South Carolina state flag?
On the 6th day God created dinosaurs?
Why the eye patch?

Update: Mail Clerk just informed me that there's a ton of comics just like this at chick.com. Turns out I didn't need to go through all the trouble of scanning it... Some of the other "tracts" provide valuable insights into homosexuality (check out the rings), halloween, Catholicism, and much more.

Ralph Reed for Governor

Sounds like Ralph Reed has his sights on the Georgia governorship.

My question still stands.

Village Voice-mentarianism

Hillary's in the Village Voice!

Word On The Street (Somewhere Near Commerce)

The rarely-live/always-recording group the Fairburn Royals have again gone back to the studio. Supposedly they meet each week, decide on a cover song, and then record it that night for an eventual free/internet release. Since nearly every review they get mentions their "diverse influences", this ought to make for a pretty big range of songs. Their website mentions Guided By Voices, Magnetic Fields, Alicia Keys, Sonic Youth, and Olivia Newton John as those who have been covered so far.

As a sidenote, during a recent conversation they mentioned that the new Eskimos record (also being recorded at the Sonic Research Facility) is "amazing". Hopefully that band (another studio-addicted group) will finish up soon and return to playing live again.

Jacko = Wacko

For anyone who missed it on TV last week, the Smoking Gun has compiled the evidence now allowed to be made public concerning Michael Jackson's awesome sleepover parties. As if we had to say it, it's not entirely safe for work.

Tonight In Athens

A good night of comedy (and some rap!) at the 40 Watt, as Fairmount Fair opens for Todd Barry. If you like funny, go. Flagpole has more to say on Todd Barry (who is endorsed by Bob and David - which is good enough for me).

Jean-Claude Van Damme is a Dancing Machine

Don't know how many of you already noticed this... Melting Dolls has a great animated gif of Jean Claude Van Damme dancing. Check it out.

Those Effin' AJC Guys

I've been working at the University for 5 years... and was a student here for 4 years before that. So, I've been on campus long enough to have been bugged a million times by those effin' AJC guys.

Every day that I walk through the Arch on my way to lunch I'm asked, "Do you want a free copy of today's newspaper?" No! I don't! Stop bugging me!

Why are the AJC paper guys always thick-necked, arrogant frat boys with names like Rusty or Joey? Do they recruit at the frat houses? Is it too much trouble for these guys to get a regular job to help pay for college like the rest of us did? Is Dial America no longer hiring?

Getting hassled on my way to lunch is bad enough... But that's nothing compared to what happened to me last night. I was sitting at home, watching the news, eating dinner with my GF, when "Brad" (what a typical AJC-guy name) knocked on my door...

Him: "Hi, my name's Brad"
Me: "Ehh"
Him: "Is this your house?"
Me: "Ehh"
Him: "Can I interest you in a free copy of today's paper?"
Me: "No" (said while slamming door)

It was one of those incidents where I thought of a handful of things I should've said after it was too late:

"Fuck off Brad"
"It's 8 PM, that better be tomorrow's newspaper"
"Yeah, I'll buy a paper if you'll donate to my blog"
"Fuck off Brad" ... oops, already said that one.

I knew a couple of these AJC guys when I was in college... they were all frat boys and are all now off selling insurance somewhere (one of 'em was on Paradise Island for an episode). I'd like to get in touch with them about this topic, but I don't have a Cobb County phonebook (which is where they're all living now, I'm sure).

If you know one of these AJC guys, please e-mail this article to them so that they can post their side of the story right here in the comments.

Man... Brad sure put me in a bad mood...

Brown Frown Gets Political

Just wanted to send out a "Godspeed" to Brown Frown who leave today on a special tour of sorts which will find them playing an anti-inauguration party in Washington, D.C. early next week. But more than likely the President prefers them on that side of the fence, so it's a win-win situation.

This Weekend In Athens

Why don't more bands play shows the first few weeks in January? Or right before/after AthFest? Seriously...

FRI: The film-scoringest band around, Kenosha Kid, performs at Nuci's Space at 8:30 PM. See this page for more info.

Also, there's that show with Brian Teasley's (the guy from Man ... Or Astroman? and The Polyphonic Spree who also writes for Chunklet's) other band, Humans, at the Caledonia. Flagpole says this and this.

SAT: The Late BP Helium, Summer Hymns, and Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't perform at Nuci's Space at 10 PM. If you're reading this, you probably already know about them. But what's interesting is this little bit of info that BP just posted on his website:

"...and then the of Montreal onslaught begins. a huge 2 1/2 month tour commences this spring starting in march with SXSW. the new of Montreal record, the sunlandic twins, will be released at the beginning of april."

He goes on to mention that there are plans to record new Elf Power and TLBPH records this year. For more info on the show, here. Also, BP's new album was reviewed on Pitchfork today (a review which stands in some contrast to The Onion's review a coupla' months ago). Anyway, should be a great show.

Dog Braves Hippie Crotch, Busts Perps

Don't miss the Jam Cruise 3 story up at AthensMusic.com right now - it's got hilarious picture accompaniment and details of noodlers trying to hide their stashes from drug dogs. I was thinking it'd be fun to make a game where you match the person to their profession and to what they had on them.

Athens Audio

Disney has hired some folks to write a remake of Tron. Considering the advances in computer technology and other things, this could at least be a nice piece of eye candy. (Variety via DarkHorizons.com)

Have meowsers clean your monitor... for all my fellow cat lovers.

Why Bye, Blue Sky?

I missed the Banner article on the demise of Blue Sky originally, but thankfully Athens World hasn't strayed from the case (just scroll around and you'll see). And for anyone wanting Blue Sky merch, you can still get it on their website.

The Irish Mental Health Hotline

You've prolly already heard this before, since I'm so slow at everything.

Borat's Next

If you're a fan of the Ali G Show, you can see what Borat's been up to here. I'm surprised that he's still walking around, honestly.

America (The Book): Still the Most Objectionable Book Ever

They might've reversed the ban, but it's still pornography (see previous post).

Not a Good Start for John Barrow

When I was a kid, I used to blame the joystick every time I lost a game of Techmo Bowl. John Barrow is havin' similar problems...

He missed his first vote as a congressman... according to John, his pager wasn't working:

"Mr. Speaker," the newly elected congressman was forced to explain last week, "I was unable to cast my vote on Jan. 3, 2005. The pager provided to me by House administration — to notify me of votes — was defective. Consequently, I did not receive the announcement that the vote was taking place in time to cast my vote on the House floor. Had I been present, I would have voted 'nay.'"

Bloggers at SXSW

South By Southwest is having some super cool bloggers crash the party this year. Features a keynote from Wonkette... hey yo!

Why wasn't The Day Jobs invited?

... oh yeah... that's right... we're not cool. Not cool at all.

How To Dismantle A Career

I haven't heard the new U2 record - aside from that ipod commercial. But The Best Page In Universe and Something Awful both have thoughts on it. (And people say there's no such thing as bad publicity.)

Bunny's Abstinence Campaign

Melting Dolls advocates saving yourself.

America (The Book): The Most Objectionable Book Ever

CNN is reporting that a couple of libraries in Mississippi are banning the Daily Show's "America (The Book)". Sez the librarian:

"I've been a librarian for 40 years and this is the only book I've objected to so strongly that I wouldn't allow it to circulate..."

Whoah! That's impressive. America (The Book) is more racy than any other book he's received in 40 years!!???! All because of a few little genitalia?

Athens Audio

Apparently, the recent impromptu performance at the 40 Watt featuring Kevn Kinney and Jason Isbell inspired a repeat (this time with Caitlin Cary). Large-Hearted Boy has the link.

C'mon Ride That Plane

Not to get all Michael Moore about things, but the story of a "mystery jet" picking people up for an all-inclusive torture resort vacation is a little creepy - especially when the source is the Chicago Tribune.

The Cell Phones are Back

All those students will be coming back in town this week... which means their cell phones will probably be coming with them (unless they're all on phone restriction).

So... the next time you're stuck in a small room (or on a bus) with one of those folks who insist on having a meaningless conversation on their cell, give 'em a SHHH handout.

These handy dandy handouts can be printed, cut and put away in your pocket for whenever you need 'em.

Free Cookies!

Five Star Day Cafe turns 7 today. I like that place already, but I like it even more now that they set out baskets of star-shaped, iced sugar cookies for passers-by to help themselves to in order to celebrate today. If you're around campus/downtown, go grab one.

Athens Music News

A coupla' things I was happy to read lately:

AthensMusic.com has details on Vic Chesnutt's upcoming album, Ghetto Bells.

And many folks might've missed the announcement of the impending return of Murder Beach amongst all the text in the year-end Flagpole.

DBT In NYC

A few pictures from the Drive-By Truckers' New Year's Eve show in New York are up here.

In addition, Patterson recently posted a bit of news about their upcoming re-releases and shows at the 40 Watt here in a few weeks.

(Thanks to Hillary for the pictures link!)

Wacky* Warning Labels

A winner has been determined in Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch's warning label contest.

(*=Their word, not mine. Wackiness not guaranteed. Thanks to Allison for the link!)

Hey Movie Geeks!

Get a bunch of DVD's for Christmas? Have a bucha them already but don't know which commentaries are listenable and which are simply crap? Check out CommentaryDVD.com. They go through and review the good ones and pull out all the good chunks of info so you don't have to wade through all the "Oh, I remember this day..."'s.

This Weekend In Athens

A relatively quiet weekend with a few shining moments here and there...

FRI: Looking for a quiet evening? Try the soft sounds of The Good Ship at the Caledonia. Read more about 'em in the Banner this week.

Prefer something more German? Try the traditional Cabaret sounds of Audition with Max Reinhardt at the Georgia Theatre (note: doors at 9PM). If you're already a fan (or just want to know their influences), you can check out Sanni's picks in the Banner this week as well.

SAT (Happy Birthday, Elvis):
I'll let William Tonks say it (cause he already has and I'm lazy)...

"It’s a new year. It’s grey. It’s rainy. You’re back at work. What could offer a lift like a nice night out on the town, in the cozy confines of the Flicker Theatre ... listening to the Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry. There’s a bar on one side, a music room on the other. The drinks are reasonably priced. They make popcorn often. The show will be from 9-11, and will feature some musicians from Italy as well (Ben’s sister and her husband). Hope to see you there."

But before that, at 7PM, Nuci's Space is having what seems to be an artistically-decorated furniture auction with music. Here's the details straight from Will Kiser:

"The Nuçi’s Space Furniture Revival

This event is a one of a kind furniture auction and benefit concert. The furniture up for auction has been painted and revived by local design crew Shades of Hue (All furniture will be on display the night before at Nuçi's Space). The auction will feature a laid back music background and the volume will be turned up as the night goes on. For more info call 227-1515. Brought to you by: Shades of Hue, Colours Salon and Corporate Clown Records.

· The Reg Owens Jazz and Blues Band
· The Dylan Blues Project: acoustic blues and jazz guitar.
· Janus Standing: This Southern-tinged pop rock band is a transplant from Washington D.C.
· Walter’s Jaw"

V for Vendetta

Natalie Portman has been confirmed for V for Vendetta, a film based on Alan Moore's incredible comic of the same name. Very cinematic to begin with, the comic was adapted for the screen by the Wachowski brothers, but it's being directed by someone else. Most previous Alan Moore adaptations haven't really captured the fullness of his comics, but we can always hope this one will be different. The teaser poster has also been revealed. (from IGN.com)

The FCC Song

"Here’s a little song I wrote the other day while I was out duck hunting with a judge… It’s a new song, it’s dedicated to the FCC and if they broadcast it, it will cost a quarter of a million dollars."

(Obviously, not safe for work.)

Everything Idol, Round 2 Begins!

Finally, the second round of the ongoing contest to determine the best thing ever has commenced over at the Gardner Linn Fan Club. Go cast your vote and check back often over there as new things are pitted against one another.

55378008

I know myself and the other folks who publish here want to wish Sarah a speedy recovery from her first surgery yesterday. From what I understand, it went quite well, and she's drugged up on morphine now (I'm sure she'll tell y'all all about it when she's back in action). If you want to wish her well post a comment on her blog, The Tit Offensive - don't be afraid if you don't know her; she loves it when strangers write stuff.

Also, a big congratulations to her and her new fiance on their engagement.

Get well soon, Sarah!

Athens Audio

Elf Power's New Year's show at the Watt is up now, thanks to Sloan Simpson. That was a pretty great night. No word yet on if/when the Pylon show might be available. It was quite awesome as well, though. As always, this is a limited time download, so get it while it's up.

Tonight In Athens

Two good shows are lined up tonight featuring some of the freshest (both in the sense that Rob Base used it and in the "hasn't been around too long" sense) talent around this town ...

You can either see Venice Is Sinking at Little Kings. Soft but not moody stuff played by people who look like they should be in a punk/indie-pop/emo band. Good love songs and other themes with well-harmonized boy/girl vocals and a violin for good measure. Tonight's show is acoustic.

Another great choice would be We Vs. The Shark at Tasty World. What's there left to say? It's math rock but you can dance to it. Their album was in Flagpole's Top 10 Local Albums Of 2004 - although it won't be "officially" released nationally until January 25th. Good stuff.

Will Eisner

I hate to spread bad news, but Will Eisner, one of the greats in comics and oft-proclaimed "father of the modern graphic novel," died. Mark Evanier has written a good piece about him here. If you've never checked out any of Eisner's work before, hunt some down.

From Beyond Lost Footage Found

Bloody-Disgusting reports that the footage cut from Stuart Gordon's film From Beyond has been found and will find its way to DVD soon! The footage is pretty much all gore cut by the MPAA way back when, and it has been assumed lost. A whole ton of horror films have the same sob story, but there seems to be a happy ending in this case.

Halloween 1 & 2 Locations Revisited

The Horror Channel's Hallowed Grounds has a very thorough and interesting article detailing visits in 1994 and 2005 to locations from the first two Halloween films (mainly South Pasadena). They even have interior shots of the modern-day Myers' place.

Waste Some Time, Kill Some Sledders

Here's a fun flash game that is called Toboggan Run. It features color commentary from Gov. Swartzendgeergger (sp?).

Well, I Haven't Seen You Since Last Year

Arghhh... does everyone else's coworkers think it's still funny to use the "I haven't seen you since last year" line when returning from the holidays?
