Love Tractor - Also Call It A Comeback

Wow, a whole buncha cool news coming in today. Check this out (from a reliable TDJ source who rocks!):

No advertising will say it, but the band playing March 8th at 40 Watt
club under the psedonym of Led Balloon is actually old school Athens
party band Love Tractor coming back to town for an early evening show.
As for the reason of why they need to play under an assumed name, see
their mid 1980's alter-ego cover band Wheel O' Cheese as a precedent.

For those unfamiliar with the band, there's also this page. I can't wait; this is gonna be awesome.

Olivia Tremor Control - Call It A Comeback

Just got some exciting news in an e-mail from the 40 Watt...

Olivia Tremor Control is playing on April 15th... Elf Power opens... Hey-yo!

UPDATE: For those of you who don't read the comments... Hassiotis says, "Note: They're $10 and you can buy 'em on the 40 Watt's web site, at least until April 13 or so. Hard tickets go on sale next week, according to the 40 Watt."

Athens Audio

A coupla' recent Athens and Atlanta shows from a coupla' outta-towners. First, here's Mike Cooley's sets (with a photo), and also here's Centro-Matic's sets. Both courtesy of Sloan Simpson. I missed the Centro-Matic Tasty World show but heard it was fantastic; the Cooley 40 Watt show is mostly worth it for the songs that aren't on DBT albums (the one labelled "Space City" is particularly good). Enjoy.

R.I.P. Candy

Well, it's official. Candy's closing. Another downtown casualty. As far as I know, they're closed today, but they'll be opening Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for a going out of business sale. No word on whether or not the online store will stay open. Also, no word on what owner Michael Lachowski will pursue next (other than Pylon and his photography). Whatever it is, good luck Michael!

Tonight In Athens

Ishues and Tommy Valentine repeat their Valentine's Day rap battle upstairs at Tasty World. Supposedly a great performance, and it's part of Tasty World's weekly "Elementary School" nights every Monday. It's nice to know rap has a home in Athens... hope it cultivates worthwhile acts (not to say these two aren't; we just need more).

UPDATE: Show apparently starts at 8PM. Read this Banner article for more info.

Le Tigre Review

After returning home from the show Saturday night, Dan Matthews sent us a review and pics of the Le Tigre show:

"This show fucking rocked my world. Feminist radicals chanting songs and slogans with fists pumping all around the 40 Watt Club. Three ladies showed how it should be done, and done very well. This should well be included in my top ten all time shows in Athens. LeTigre played many of their more recognizable tunes, included "T.K.O." and had the crowd singing along. They encouraged audience participation on every other number. This band is the logical extension of the Clash, Blondie and the B-52's rolled up into their own expression of power, passion and joy. The two ladies from Clemson, including one named Jessica Parks who is being kissed, danced on me all evening."

Think, McFly, Think

Some people just don't think clearly when committing a crime.

Boring Movies

Something Awful's constantly amusing Photoshop Phriday is up now. This week's subject: making boring movie posters. The one with Kate Hudson is particularly amusing, but not work safe. In lieu of that, there's this:

Germans: Great Drivers, Bad Parkers

Just wanted to direct attention to this pic up on Daily Foo.

Scene Missing Magazine

TDJ's photoblogger, Graphic Designer, has released a paperback digest of collected interviews from his blog, Scene Missing Magazine. It includes interviews with Wiley Wiggins, Greg Dulli, Chris Funk (a member of the Decemberists), the founder of Suicide Girls, and much more.

Go here to get it.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: Well, undoubtedly the place you'll wanna be is at the 40 Watt to see an all-too-rare solo appearance by the Drive-By Truckers' Mike Cooley. Not only is he a great songwriter, but with Don Chambers opening it's a fantastic bill. This is one of those "don't miss" shows. Seriously. Here's a related link from a coupla' days ago too.

But before that, if you're in the mood for some BBQ and country, apparently Redneck GReece is appearing once again at Jot 'Em Down. Show starts at 6PM. Don't know where everyone's gonna fit, but I guess it'd work out. As a sidenote, due to conversation on TDJ after his last show there, I tried the BBQ. It's great. But don't forget it's cash only.

SAT: Todd McBride and the Cooler Heads bring some great rock music to the Caledonia. They're one of those bands we brag on a lot, so I won't drag it out again. But see 'em cause they're great.

If you get done with that in time, it might also be worth the money to see a certain Flagpole editor dance his drunk ass off next door at the 40 Watt as Le Tigre plays their make-up show. If you do, please take pictures for us! (Just kidding, CH.) (But seriously folks, if that happens, do.)

Also, Bloodkin plays an acoustic show at the Eastwood Pub, a new bar/venue on the East Side which apparently will be booking more of these type shows. Don't know the start time, but if you do post it in the comments.

The Last Blogger in the Blogosphere To Post This

According to Slate, we're the last blog in the world to post this interesting site "that takes images from blogs and other news sources and adds randomly generated text and speech balloons to create a live-action comic strip."

Newest Barbie

When the going gets tough, Barbie gets desperate.

(Stolen from Memepool.)

DBT DVD Release

The upcoming Drive-By Truckers' DVD titled "Dirty South: Live at the 40 Watt" is now available for pre-order. Of course, Amazon has it but note that DeepDiscountDVD also has it available and for a cheaper price. Or, better yet, you could always just buy it at our local music stores upon release.

Bush Raps

Continuing my trend of ripping off links from Large-Hearted Boy recently, have y'all seen/heard the results of the Bush Raps contest?

(PS - If you like Wilco, check this out.)

Tonight In Athens

Parker & Lily, Summer Hymns, and Ginger Envelope play the 40 Watt. Flagpole says this about P & L and this about GE. Summer Hymns is of course, great. It'll be a sorta sleepy show, but nonetheless enjoyable. Have a coffee beforehand.

Another option would be Ishues returning to the Athens stage for his first actual performance (not a rap battle) in a while. He moved off to SC, as far as I know. Anyway, if you're in the rap mood, there's that.

Finally, former Lona drummer Mikey Dwyer performs at Lunch Paper (his solo debut?). I don't know what his music sounds like nor anything about the other performers on this "Songwriters Night", but he's a cool guy and I expect good things.

UPDATE: Apparently there's a free, early show at 7PM at Little King's tonight as well. AMdC has the scoop.

Cannon Fodder

The search is on for a cannon to shoot out Hunter S. Thompson's ashes, per his final wish. In related news, there was no note, and it wasn't anything to do with Bush or the state of the country.

However, there was some interaction between Thompson and Bush. What else did Bush do? Sounds like we won't know anytime soon.

Dark times. We need that cannon.

A Whole Lotta Space

Some of you around here have said that "the iPod changed your life."For those of us who want to get onboard, Apple introduced its new iPod models and revisions today. There are more options at cheaper prices and the iPod mini has an improved battery life. The 40GB models are also now a thing of the past. In addition, Apple now offers a camera connector for the photo iPod models allowing you to connect from your digital camera. Just when you thought you had caught up, they leave you wanting more.

Successorizing

I've always hated "Successories". To me, they seem to all say, "Work, Slave!" more than anything else (their motto, "Reinforcing Your Corporate Culture", pretty much says it all - no, I'm not kidding). In fact, Despair was usually more accurate most of the time, even if through mockery. However, when their new catalog reached my office yesterday, I finally found one that accurately describes that "go-getter attitude":

(PS How sad/funny is this?)

Korn + God = ... Uh-Oh

Yup, it seems that Korn's guitarist has found God and thus left the band (the two being mutually exclusive). He says he's going to explain it all fully in some sorta church setting soon, but the question remains: will he be man enough to make amends? Cause I swear I've run head-first into their music while flipping channels like 20 times or more over the years, and I'm owed.

New Feeds

We have some new RSS feeds for the new TDJ sections:

- The Day Jobs - Audio: http://www.dangpow.com/~dayjob/audio/atom.xml
- The Day Jobs - Photo: http://www.dangpow.com/~dayjob/photo/atom.xml

I'm eventually going to post these to the sidebar... but if you'd like to add 'em to your aggregator, go ahead.

A Chat with Mike Cooley

There is a brief interview with Mike Cooley of the Drive-By Truckers in Atlanta's Sunday Paper.

There is also more information on the same page about The Loft, a new 600-seat venue located inside the EarthLink Live complex. It will be interesting to see how this venue fares in light of the recent closings of Atlanta's Echo Lounge, Cotton Club, 9 Lives Saloon and the soon-to-be closed Masquerade.

Tonight In Athens

Here's something different for you... The Georgia Theatre is hosting "Pickin' For A Cure", a bluegrass/country benefit for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It features the Blackmon Brothers, the Packway Handle Band, and others. Good music, good cause. Just watch out for that Georgia Theatre beer.

Anonymity is for Sucka MC's

I just wanted to quickly share a funny story with ya'll.

TDJ bloggers have somewhat clear roles... I write about computers, politics, nerd stuff, etc... Advisor writes about homosexuality, comics, horror movies... Mail Clerk writes alot about Athens music/gossip... etc.

Many of the posts from Mail Clerk have been about my band, which has always been fine... so long as people didn't think I was posting these things about myself.

Well, a few weeks ago I ran into my old neighbor at Kroger. He comes up to me and says, "Hey Matt... I hear you have a new album."
I say, "Yup".
He says, "I've been reading lots of good things about it."
I say, "Really?"
He says, "Mostly from this site called The Day Jobs, you heard of it?"

...now most people would say, "Oh... I'm one of the bloggers on that site... My friend (Mail Clerk) is the one who posts all that crap about us... otherwise, we normally get bad reviews."

However... I, being a total scitzoid, said, "Oh really? I've never heard of it."

Right afterwards, I thought to myself, "What an effin' idiot am I? Why did I just lie about that?"

What a Larry David sort of thing to do...

New Star Wars Preview (Spoiler Alert!)

A few of the new Star Wars products launching this summer.

Any of you geeks fed up with George Lucas' prequels? You're not alone. Learn the secrets of the final film here.

(Thanks to Tom for the link!)

In Stores Now

Warm Records releases Liz Durrett's debut album Husk today. There's a pretty good description of it with sound samples here. I won't waste time repeating it except to say it's soft, it's great, and you should buy it.

In case you missed it, here was our interview with her way back when about this release.

Julie Powell And The Holy Rollin' Empire also make their debut today with Hymns and Spirituals (on Solponticello), which is pretty much self explanatory. They've done a great job updating what could be updated and leaving alone what should be left alone to make old hymns quite listenable in non-church settings (I know some of the musicians involved - trust me, they're quite "secular"). Click here for more.

Finally, it's been out for a coupla' weeks now, but Orange Twin released Jack Logan and the Monday Night Recorders' debut Nature's Assembly Line. You've probably read all about it by now, but if not, then check out this Banner article and this Flagpole article. Basically, a buncha good musicians met once a week or so, committed to writing and recording three songs each time, and did so. Wound up with about 100 songs and whittled them down to fifteen for this collection. More forthcoming, supposedly. Click here for more.

Also, here's what Kevin Lane told us about it a while back (you can check to see if he lied about anything).

Busblog + Paratrooper

The Busblog has a nice interview with a paratrooper from Georgia who's been to Iraq twice in the past couple of years. Good stuff...

LHB Links

Large-Hearted Boy's also posted a couple of other great links lately. For the comedic they have these hilarious student essays, and very sadly they have this story on the end of Muscle Shoals Studios (under "News").

Audio (Athens & Beyond)

Large-Hearted Boy's audio section's pretty stacked right now: Hunter S. Thompson, Japancakes (the one we posted yesterday), Drive-By Truckers, Kevn Kinney, Now It's Overhead, and Wilco.

Tonight In Athens

Centro-Matic returns to Athens for the second time in as many months. The Denton, TX band headlines Tasty World. Word has it that Jason Isbell, who is in town mixing his solo record, might show up for a bit. Anyone who saw him play with them at the last set of DBT shows knows that that's a good thing. And if you hadn't read it yet, Flagpole published Will Johnson's tour diary from his last visit here.

My GF is an Inspirational Breast Cancer Survivor.... Holla!

Wanna brag on my GF for a minute...

On the main UGA home page there's a story called "Healthy Hour". If you read that story, they mention an "inspirational message from a breast cancer survivor." That's my GF. Holla.

RIP Hunter S. Thompson

Author and journalist Hunter S. Thompson fatally shot himself in the head yesterday in Aspen, Colorado.

Here's some of the great Hunter S. Thompson quotes:

"America... just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen
with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing
anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable." -Hunter S. Thompson

"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone,
but they've always worked for me. " -Hunter S. Thompson

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long
plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die
like dogs. There's also a negative side."-Hunter S. Thompson

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." -Hunter S. Thompson

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only
people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."
-Hunter S. Thompson

Athens Audio

Sloan's uploaded a Japancakes show from late last year. Most of their shows, though rare, are pretty great. So I'm sure this one is no exception. It's from the Echo Lounge on 12/2/04. Click here to see the setlist and/or download it.

Also, here's the link for the Dave Marr show at the Caledonia. I hope he starts playing our regularly (Pedro, I'm looking in your direction), but in the meantime at least we have those two recent shows.

Thanks, Sloan!

Tonight In Athens

The math-rockers are at it again... catch We Versus The Shark and Coulier at the Caledonia tonight. I sure wish WVTS would play parties again, but I guess the Caledonia is about as close as you come in a club. Also, if you're over 22, you might want to bring a younger chaperone. All kidding aside though, they do rock.

New Stuff at TheDayJobs.com

We have a few new things going on at TDJ:

* New Sections - The Day Jobs is now split into 3 sections: Text, Audio, and Photo. The text section is the normal blog featuring the same old folks. The audio section is an audioblog with random mp3's from Robo-Dave (most of which will not likely be safe for work). The photo section is a photoblog featuring photographs from Graphic Design (who is also responsible for Scene Missing Magazine and Spangle, Inc). To access the new sections, use the buttons in the side bar.

* New Bloggers - We've added a few new bloggers to the site. In addition to Robo-Dave and Graphic Design (see "New Sections"), we'll now be getting text posts from Desktop Publisher.

So there ya go... hope you like the new shizz.

Ouch!

Need I say more?

A Taste Of Athens

Also going on this weekend, on Sunday night, is the annual Taste of Athens, where you can sample food from lots of great restaurants and help benefit Community Connection all at the same time. Tix are $40 advanced, $45 day-of. But given the array of food, it's worth it. Click here for more info.

Athens Audio

Okay, this is a good one. Recently, a CD of what Andy Lemaster calls "the best live recording Now It's Overhead has ever had" was sort of "leaked". It was recorded while the band was on tour with R.E.M. last year. Click here to download it. But since you have to be an Easytree member to do so, here's the info:

Now It's Overhead - 10/27/04
Taft Theater - Cincinnati, OH

01) Wonderful Scar
02) Surrender
03) Wait In A Line
04) Hi
05) Blackout Curtain
06) Turn & Go
07) 6th Grade Roller
08) Dark Cycle
09) Hold Your Spin
10) Who's Jon
11) Reverse

(Thanks to Sloan for the link and upload!)

Linky Linky

I've got 4 links to share with ya'll. I didn't see the need in making 4 different posts.... so here ya go:

- Wesley Willis Song Generator
- Virtual Stan
- Napolean Dynamite Soundboard
- Baby Disco (thanks to Hillary for this one)

This Weekend In Athens

Watch out! Rehab's in town!...

Not as serious as pictured.
FRI: Kyle Dawkins, a member of The Georgia Guitar Quartet, performs a set of his new material at the X-Ray Cafe (next to Clocked). His new stuff is an odd blend of folk guitar, classical guitar, and electronic music. The result is surprisingly good.

If it's your birthday, you can dress like this.
SAT: Homelessy-looking but talented punk rockers Carrie Nations play Transmetropolitan for a Tsunami Benefit (their third?). Another good punk-like option would be Donkey Punch at Tasty World. They haven't played in a while, either. F'pole says this about that show (it's definitely worth a read).

Also, happy birthday to Jason Nesmith! To celebrate, Casper & The Cookies will play the Lunch Paper. And finally, the "Garbage Island Big Band" (featuring John Fernandes, Heather McIntosh, and Erik Hinds) brings something experimental and likely great to the Caledonia.

(UPDATE: Carrie Nations link added - thanks Lars!)

WVTS on Pitchfork (or, vice versa)

Pitchfork has a nice review of We Versus the Shark's debut Ruin Everything!

Highlight trying-real-hard-to-be-a-serious-journalist phrase: "Ruin Everything! is a flurry of sparkling detail and fragmentary hooks that somehow accrue into cohesive songs."

The Devil Made Me Do It

The Associated Press tells me that a university linked to the Vatican is now offering classes in Satanism. It warms my heart to know that still now, in the 21st century, people validate the idea of the existence of some invisible horned being living deep within the blazing fires of the Earth's core who has the power to absolve idiots of the personal responsibility for their poor life choices. Can't a pimply faced teenager listen to Iron Maiden and Motley Crue in peace and hate his parents and school without being branded a Satanist? SHOUT! SHOUT! SHOUT! SHOUT AT THE DEVIL!!!

It Just Never Gets Old

Gizoogle your search engine. Here's what Snoop says about The Day Jobs: "The Day Jobs is a group bizzy fo` those who is productively lazy. Each blogga lives, works, n plays in Athens ridin' in mah double R."

Dylan & Cash Sessions

Of all the bootlegs I've ever been tempted to actually shell out cash for, the Dylan/Cash sessions rank at the top. Thankfully, Large-Hearted Boy has a link to them today (complete with bonus tracks). I just hope they'll still be up by the time I get home.

Tonight In Athens

Neff not included.
A busy week of music winds down with two great shows. You can either catch multi-instrumentalist Neil Fountain at Little King's or the strange but intriguing combo of rappers Fairmount Fair and the soft sounds of Venice Is Sinking (whose website's "images" section causes my IE to crash) at The Caledonia. Up to you; either would be great.

But before all that, you can tune into WUOG's (90.5's) "Live in the Lobby" at 8PM to hear Don Chambers and GOAT (who need a website) perform. If you do so, prepare for your socks to be blown off.

Hard Time Waking Up in the Mornings?

If you are a male and always late in the morning, Ebay can offer you a solution. Your very own personal alarm clock. You can also take this service on the road for your next business meeting.

Hey, you have to advertise your "services" somewhere right?

Sin City Official Site

For the many fans of the trailer, the official Sin City movie site is now open.

KM's Fan

According to a letter in this week's flagpole, Karate Media has a fan (it's the next to last letter)!

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trailer

Amazon's got it here.

This Just In...

Also performing tonight in Athens will be the Dexter Romweber Duo at Little King's. I have no idea what time it will start, but it'll be a donation-based show (no charge). That's all I got.

As Comic Fans Already Know...

Superman is a d!*k.

(Swiped once again from Memepool. I'm bored; this is what happens.)

Everything Awesome: The Competition Continues

Just wanted to remind everyone, quite selfishly, that the ongoing contest to determine the best thing ever on-goes over at the Gardner Linn Fan Club. Right now there's a battle between chocolate chip cookies, air-conditioning, and Lawrence of Arabia. You won't believe (as least I can't believe) the results. Go, change them.

Athens Audio

Barbara Cue's set from the 40 Watt on Saturday is now up for viewing/downloading along with pictures of the show - all courtesy of Sloan Simpson. The show was billed as just William Tonks but ended up being a six song acoustic set by the whole band. Click here for it.

I Gotta Have More Cowbell!

The Cowbell Project allows you to search by artist or title for songs that have used the cowbell to its fullest. In addition, there are several songs available in which the site's creators have added cowbell where there should have been one. If you've got a fever and the only cure is more cowbell, this is the place to go.

(Stolen with pride from Memepool.)

Tonight In Athens

Now It's Overhead headlines the 40 Watt. I've said like 800 times that it's gonna be the last time they play out for a while because Andy Lemaster's going back to work in the studio and moving to NY and whatnot - that's only because that's what he kept saying. Well now, for sure, this is the last NIO show for many months, maybe years. Though he promises a new album in a 'normal' time frame this time around. We'll see. Anyway, catch 'em while you can.

80's Nostalgia, Ltd.

Apparently the 80's are back, but is it mostly in an ironic way? Bad music is still bad music, it seems. So says the NYT.

(Link blatantly stolen from Large-Hearted Boy.)

Shaun of the Dead Comic Book

IDW will be releasing a 4-issue mini-series adapting Shaun of the Dead, according to Movies Online. Usually movie-to-comic adaptations are nothing to speak of, but this comic will include "deleted scenes" and ideas that didn't make it to the screen.

Gosford Wine Don't Mess Around

Just had to say that Hillary was totally right the other day... Gosford Wine kicks arse. You tell 'em a price, a type, and a taste they'll nail it. I'm sure price and type would do. I went in and said, "I'm looking for a good bottle of Chianti around $20, give or take, with a pretty full-bodied taste" - I got one of the best bottles I've ever had. And they do have a big rack of cheap, supposedly good wines. One word of warning, though: don't leave your wine in the car when it's cold outside. It doesn't adjust back to room temperature quickly.

And for those who don't know, this is the place right next to the new Kroger in the Alps shopping center.

(UPDATE: Name corrected, links added.)

Robo-Dave + Bunny Mcintosh

We previously told you about how Robo-Dave and Bunny Mcintosh have been working on some music... well, their "producer" (if you can call him that) sent me their first song...

It's called Johnny Thomas.

Tonight In Athens

Casper & The Cookies and The Late BP Helium rock the Caledonia out tonight. I can't really picture Casper rolling out too many "Soft Rhombus" style covers from the other night, but I guess we'll see. Believe it or not, this maybe one of your last chances to catch BP Helium for a while, as in a coupla' months he'll be out the door on an Of Montreal tour.

Cyber Disfunction

You've probably all already read it, but since it's Valentine's, here's this twisted story of online romance.

(This story spread like wildfire through through the blogosphere, and we weren't too quick on the draw that day... Thanks to David E. for sending it to us!)

The Hills Have Eyes Remake

This might be the most exciting remake news yet! Alexandre Aja, who directed High Tension (aka Haute Tension) is redoing Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. Fangoria's got a little bit of casting news as well.

High Tension is easily one of my favorite horror movies of this decade at least; it's got all the goods (see it!!!). So, I'm pretty stoked about this one.

Onion V-day

"...As you pry open your fancy, red Russell Stover box, take heed," bin Laden said. "For in the place of tasty caramels and buttercreams, you will find the flaming sword of righteous jihad!"

Sorry, couldn't resist. Also, there's this.

Valentine's Mix

Gardner's got a link to what looks like a pretty good Valentine's mix.

Tonight In Athens

We Versus The Shark, Hope For Agoldensummer, and Marriage play a special Valentine's show at the 40 Watt. What's so special about it? I don't know, but supposedly there'll be a cover tune or two involving WVTS and HFAGS together. Those're two of the best bands of the last few years, so should be great.

Clang!

NYT Mag has a great article about why the NBA is, by far, the worst pro sport in America.

I Drove An H2 This Weekend

I hate Hummers.... I mean, really hate 'em. Almost as much as these guys hate 'em... In fact, I'm right there with Patton Oswalt. He says:

"People should be allowed to drive Hummers. But once they hand 'em the keys, they oughta knock 'em on the back of the head with a sack full of quarters. Then when they wake up, they'll discover they're in Iraq... They can drive the Hummer, they just gotta get the oil their selves." (paraphrasing, of course)

This weekend, I drove down to my sister's house and saw a Hummer coming my way down the street. As usual, my blood started boiling and I started spouting off obscenities towards the beast. Come to find out, the driver was my bro-in-law...

His father was storing a Hummer for one of their family members in his garage while the owner was off on some two-month vacation. So, he brought the Hummer around for all of us to see. So... and please, this must be just between you and I... I drove the Hummer.

I gotta say... it's really nice. The outside looks like a turd... but the interior was all nice and leathery and spacious and pretty and evil. I could feel it sucking me into the dark side.

I drove it around the block once and had to get out before it turned me into one of them. You know... compensating-for-something Hummer drivers.

Get this... can you believe that they only get 10 mpg??!!? My car gets 30!

So anyways, I drove a Hummer... and I liked it. But once I got back into my Ford Focus, I felt sooooo much better/comfy.

On a related note: I spotted my first pair of Bumper Nuts this weekend.

Ikea Inspires Madness

Sometimes you just have to stab someone to get the good deals.

Athens Music News

Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) talks to Pitchfork today about the upcoming album and tour. If it's anything as good as Satanic Panic..., I can't wait.

Mixes For Every Occasion

In addition to music news, Tiny Mix Tapes is a site where you send 'em your theme, and they make a mix out of it. The weirder the theme, the better the outcome usually. Robo, send 'em something!

(Stolen from nearly word-for-word from Memepool. Sad, really.)

They Rule

They Rule is a Web site that, "allows you to create maps of the interlocking directories of the top companies in the US in 2004."

As the Web site states, it provides a glimpse into the relationships of America's ruling class. Plus, it's a pretty cool Flash-based site.

This Weekend In Athens

Clay, Clay, Clay...

FRI: If you wanna dance, you can see I Am The World Trade Center's return to the performing circuit, all healthy. And Iron Hero's with 'em at the Watt.

If you wanna rock, there's A and Nutria at the Caledonia. One's a thick-chorded rock sound, the other is lighter, with great harmonies and overall catchy songs.

If you wanna country-rock, The Chasers are playing at Tasty World. Raw, old-school country. Covers and originals. Very damn good.

If you wanna do whatever you do to world music-ish stringed instrumentals, then check out Dromedary at Nuci's Space. (That intro wasn't an insult - they're really good.) For more info, see this Flagpole article or this page.

SAT: The third appearance by Clay Leverett in as many days as Lona headlines the 40 Watt, with Park Bench Trio and William Tonks in tow. Lona, when they're a full six-piece, are without a doubt one of the best bands around. And if you don't see Clay at this show, you'll have to wait a full four days before he's on stage again!

Also, The Wedding Band (the low-key, instrumental band featuring members of Circulatory System) will play a special love songs show at Flicker. Starts at 8:30 PM, so it's a good place to go get drinks beforehand if you're going to the Watt.

A Word Of Warning

I don't mean to bum anyone out with this, and again it's taken so long for me to hear about it that I'm sure some other local blog's covered it already too (been a busy week - not a lot of reading time), but did y'all hear about the woman who fell down the stairs at City Bar this weekend and ended up dying from head injury complications? I'd always thought, on the few times I'd been there that those stairs looked/felt dangerous. Guess it was founded.

Afternoon Game Break

Check out The World's Smallest Game of Pac-Man or, if you prefer, Robot Fisticuffs (somewhat like Punch-Out).

(Both via Memepool.)

Boooooo... Fred Armisen

Wanna heckle Fred Armisen?

Athfest CD Comp

Calling all Athens folks in the blogosphere. If you live in Athens and you've got a catchy song, send it to Athfest. I know a few of you have some good ones.

Tonight In Athens

The 40 Watt hosts "A Night Of One-Hit Wonders". Lona, The Stand-Ins, Nutria, The Shut-Ups, and Casper Fandango & Soft Rhombus will play 20-30 minute sets of ... well, one-hit wonders. Should be a really fun night. F'pole says this.

MKL Breathing Sigh Of Relief

a) b)
Ms. Monday Nitro (a) and some regular more teacherly-looking educator/molester (b).

I wasn't going to post the first teacher-gets-it-on-with-student story I read today, then Robo informed me there were two of them. Sweet. And since the AJC's like it is, for the lazy amongst you, here's the kicker (the last line Robo referred to):

She was named "Ms. Monday Nitro" during broadcasts by World Championship Wrestling from spring break in Florida in 1997.

Just think, some lucky 13 Year Old has a "I got it on with Ms. Monday Nitro" story to share with friends and loved ones later in life.

Making Friday the 13th Release Date

I've had the book Making Friday the 13th from Fab Press pre-ordered on Amazon forever. Amazon has the release date as January 30, 2005 (it was pushed back once before). Fab Press's website lists it as February 2005. Desperate to know the exact release date, I emailed Harvey Fenton at Fab Press, and he reported back with:

"Within ten days. It has been printed. Just waiting to get the galleys from the printers (they are due here tomorrow) and approve it all for for binding, so it should be shipping end of next week. If not then beginning of the week after."

Unfortunately, Fab Press is in the UK:

"It will take a little longer to be available in the States, because it will actually be sent by boat. Then it needs to be trucked from New Jersey to my distributors, who are based in LA! Therefore I expect it will be in shops no sooner than the end of March at the earliest."

Well, it sucks that it will arrive later than expected, but at least I'm not checking Amazon everyday to see if the release date updates. Plus, it should be pretty good book (and it will be nice to compare to Crystal Lake Memories later in the year).

Jason Lives!!!

The Common Rugby Fan

What's the most extreme thing you've ever done to celebrate your team's victory or mourn a defeat? I'll bet you this guy's got you topped.

Viriginia Bags Sagging

If someone sees your underwear in Virginia, it now costs you $50.

Word On The Street (Washington Street)

Word has it that Kimberly Morgan & The Everloving Band will be hitting the studio soon - Chase Park, to be exact. If you haven't seen 'em play, Kimberly's voice sounds like Loretta Lynn (she's gonna get sick of that comparison real quick, I'm sure), and the band consists of her husband (DBT's drummer Brad Morgan), and several members of Southern Bitch. It's straight-up country and really great.

Expect guest appearances from DBT members and friends as well (don't know who exactly yet - but check out the folks coming into town from that camp in the next few weeks). If this were Nashville 30+ years ago, she'd be set for stardom. As it is, I hope there's someone around with some sense left in country music. We're hoping to follow up with Kimberly about all this in the next few weeks.

Athens Audio

There are certain shows that you know will stick in your memory for a long time to come. Such was the case with the Tsunami Relief show at Flicker last weekend. Patterson Hood, Dave Marr, Don Chambers, Brad Morgan, John Neff, and a host of others kept it rolling for hours and I don't think anyone got bored. They kept upping the ante every go-round. If there were one show you should download, this is it. You can get it here (and see the setlist and pics from the show as well). Thanks, as always to Sloan Simpson. Really glad this one's on tape!

As a sidenote, congratulations to Patterson and Reba Hood on the birth of their daughter yesterday. To celebrate, there's a rough cut of a new song on his site.
(Thanks to DVDGuy for the head's up.)

Band To Band

It's like "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon", but with bands.

(Via Jenn Bryant with a heads up by Jayne.)

Tonight In Athens

Dave Marr (of the Star Room Boys) and Jerry Joseph will be playing the Caledonia tonight. I cannot tell y'all how great Marr was the other night at Flicker. If he's even half as good, it'd be an awesome show. For those unfamiliar, think Merle-Haggard-ish country (mostly slow, downbeat drinking songs) with an amazing voice and great wit. Great stuff.

(Thanks to Jayne for the heads up.)

Thorax Cake

Grossest cake ever.

(Thanks to Cindy for the link!)

Google Maps

Google just launched Google Maps, and man... it's cool.

It's BullDAWG!

I'm sure between all the Athens-centered blogs, someone's covered this already, and I'm sorry for whoever's toes are being stepped on (including Computer Support, who told me about this article), but if you haven't noticed, UGA has become overrun with suburbanites.

My Little Golden Book About Zogg

As the creator says, "I was in a supermarket recently searching for a brown mustard-and-conditioner in one. It was while I was reading the ingredient label on a jar of Goulden's Dry Scalp Formula that I looked to the children's book rack and there spied the title 'My Little Golden Book About God.'"

So, he made this.

Thanks to Print Dude (different from Printmaker) for the link.

Banned Super Bowl Ads

Head over to Screenhead to see a couple of the banned Super Bowl ads.

The fact that these boring and not-at-all-controversial ads were banned is just pathetic. If anything Godaddy.com and Budweiser should be rewarded for these ads, not punished... especially Godaddy (with whom TDJ.com is a loyal customer).

Fat Tuesday

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Mardi Gras. It's pretty much my favorite holiday outside of July 4th and Halloween. Good drinks, good food, excess, nudity. Man, it's awesome.

Speaking of holidays, I'd like to propose an initiative so that The Day After The Super Bowl becomes a national holiday. Who's with me?

Popmatters on WVTS

Popmatters has a nice, albeit confusing, review of We Vs. The Shark up.

The highlight says, "We Versus the Shark comes out of Athens, GA, where it's probably almost okay to be from again."

Evs (slang stolen from Hillary).

Nearly Unlimited Supply of Online Music (Free)

Man... is that a google-able title or what???

Since several dayjobbers have asked for good places to find online music that they can listen to at work, I thought I'd post this. Go to Cdzlimited.org, click on Audio Search, and search away. I tried a ton of artists, and nearly all of 'em came up with results.

Overrated Things

Chunklet presents a list of 1,000 unrelated overrated things. As you might imagine, it's a lot to read through. But it's pretty funny (the Marianas is totally the world's most overrated trench!) and of course, lots to read means lots of wasted time.

Games Of Old

Remember this? Then you're probably old. That's okay, so am I. Still doubting your age? Then see how much else you remember from TV Cream's Top 100 Toys.

Athens Blogger Meetup

Might be too late to announce this... but there's a meetup event for Athens bloggers tonight at Room 13. Any of ya'll going?

Late Music Announcement

For those still sitting around, Jenn Bryant says this:

"Hey guys! This evening, soon-to-be-Daddy Patterson will be on WUGA 91.7 from 4 to 5 pm, talking about the Tsunami Relief Fund the band's been working on and other stuff. So far they're expecting to have made over $7000 for the fund by the end of Patterson's Flicker Theatre show Saturday night. Listen online at http://www.wuga.org. Who knows, The EZB might be riding shotgun!"

Here's This...

(Since Robo's whining about nothing amusing today.)

Deuce Bigalow Don't Mess Around

Rob Schneider got ripped in a recent L.A. Times story* about the Academy Award nominations. In response, he put out this full page ad in today's paper. Don't mess with Deuce.
