Cheer Up, Conor!

Well given the news of the day, I figured posting this article was appropriate, even though most of y'all have probably already read it.

Yoplait Can't Help Us Now

In what seems to be a real story, comedian Mitch Hedberg has died. I can't find confirmation in a news story yet, but he was supposed to play the Improv in Baltimore tonight and they have a memorial picture up on their site right now. If you click to reserve tickets it just says, sadly "No show tonight."

(Thanks to Hillary's site and its commenter. Hope this isn't like stealing a story or anything.)

UPDATE: Here's the confirmation:

"Even family and close friends had a hard time understanding Mitch Hedberg, a St. Paul native who ran away from home and, despite living a scattershot life, became a runaway success as a standup comic.

Hedberg, whose space-case persona was as much part of his soul as it was his act, died early Wednesday morning in a New Jersey hotel room. He was 37. A medical examiner hasn't issued findings, but Hedberg's family is told he suffered a heart attack. His wife was with him."

From The Bowels Of J-Lo

Wanna read something gross about a superstar? Of course you do. Hillary sent us this story.

Protesting Protesters

I'm sure you've all heard the news by now. Not gonna dwell on it, but just wanted to say that I still find this picture pretty funny. Mostly for the guy's expression. I'm sure it's also some great comment on our national dialog or something too. Anyway, it's meant to make fun of people's reactions and not the actual situation, but if you're sensitive about it all, please don't click that link.

Fecalgram

The Smoking Gun's got a funny revenge story up right now. Some bastard shot a neighbor's cat over a disagreement. So they sent him one of these.

Vic's put up another new song at his website.

This is one more attempt at convincing y'all to stop using IE (over half of you are still using IE, according to our counter)...

Homer Simpson uses a tabbed browser.

Bored? To help fend off the "3 o'clock lull", Mini World Games offers a fairly realistic and amusing online version of air hockey.

Music Midtown

More acts have been announced for the 2005 Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta, including some local acts.

Advisor's Movie Advisory

Black Christmas: The remake will be helmed by none other than Glen Morgan and James Wong of X-Files and Final Destination fame (and Willard, another remake).

The Devil's Rejects:
Yahoo's got a new trailer for this movie here. The older trailer is still here. It's supposed to be better than House of 1,000 Corpses.

Friday the 13th: Making Friday the 13th: The Legend of Camp Blood has shipped from Amazon, so it should be in stores now or very shortly! Excitement!

Intruder: Scott Spiegel's great 1988 grocery-store slasher is coming to DVD on April 5th (it is aka Night Crew: The Final Checkout!). Amazon's got it here. It's an uncut version apparently, which I can tell you is a wacky bit of fun (from my bootleg VHS). Raimi fans will especially enjoy... he has a cameo, and Bruce Campbell also appears. And you should definitely check out another film by Mr. Spiegel, "Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except," because it is also awesome.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death: Not a remake, but a movie with the same title is being made.

Masters of Horror: Showtime has picked up the rights to what will be 13 hour-long films by horror movie masters Dario Argento, John Carpenter, Larry Cohen, Roger Corman, Don Coscarelli, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon, John Landis, Tobe Hooper, and George Romero. Read more at Bloody-Disgusting.

The Flagpole on my FW

The flagpole has a nice article about my FW. Go read it!

The funniest part is the photo (see below). She says she was doing her "senior photo pose." I think she was just showing off that ring...

Liberals On The Loose

Hey we live in a college town, so watch out for those damn liberals! (Why do people do studies like this?)

Athens Audio

A few months back, there was a Warm Records showcase at Little Kings (where it seems like 90% of shows are awesome). Matthew Houck of Phosphorescent performed, debuting a buncha new material. It's up online now here for a limited time (does require you sign up at EasyTree). Thanks, as always to Sloan Simpson!

Tonight On Your TV

The Office: An American Workplace starts tonight at its regular time (9:30 PM) on NBC. This is the episode where it begins being different from the British series, and supposedly (according to reviews) really good. This prolly the last time I'll give NBC their free promo for it, but it'll be on at this timeslot for at least the next few weeks, I s'pose.

Fans of the original series might wanna catch the season 2 marathon this Saturday starting at noon on BBC America. Also, you can rock out to Freelove Freeway here (lotsa other fun stuff on the site too).

Yet More Vic Chesnutt

Don't mean to carry on about it, but for the Vic fans, make sure to check out AMdC's coverage of Vic-related material today (including a bit about Vic being honored by the GA House of Representatives). Hope they don't get all up in his bid'ness now.

UPDATE: The new album's reviewed at Pitchfork today. (Thanks, Pedro!)

NPR on Sunny Taylor

This is a few weeks old, but I just stumbled upon it...

NPR has a nice feature about Athens' Sunny Taylor. They discuss Sunny's work, methods, and much more.

Oh yeah... and here's an item that may be of particular interest to alot of the Athens music nuts 'round here... The NPR page also features an image gallery that includes a Sunny Taylor painting called Jeffrey, which appears to be a portrait of Jeff Mangum (hopefully Sunny will read this and confirm that).

For more info, check out the Day Jobs' interview with Sunny and her portfolio.

Athens Music Museum

Mike from Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records sent over some cool info:

"The Athens Music Museum will grand open on the 3rd of April, and to kick it all off, we are doing a rooftop show at 4:30 PM on the rooftop of the museum with 63 Crayons, We Versus The Shark, and The Late BP Helium. The Late BP will feature 12 members that day (with everyone who has played in the band). Should be fun, and it's free.

Also April 9th there will be a free show at Extra Records (across from the 40 watt, next to Sunshine Cycles) Poison Control Center, Mouser, and Tracer Matula. Starts at 9 PM sharp.

Also announcements on HHBTM at Athfest, and the Popfest line up very soon."

Thanks, Mike! Very excited to hear Popfest is happening again!

Indonesia at Risk Again?

CNN reports that an earthquake, the highest of seven grades, has occurred off the coast of Indonesia today. This is along the same fault line that caused December's tsunami. Scientists fear this could cause another tsunami. Let's hope not.

Large-Hearted Boy's got links to a brand new Vic Chesnutt track (looks like the Silver Lake demos got taken down, though), and also an older Sunshine Fix show.

NCAA Tourney - Day Jobs Challenge

I'd like to personally thank Mail Clerk, Tit Offensive, Chris Hassiotis, Head, and Graphic Designer for signing up for this year's Day Jobs NCAA Tourney Challenge... without you guys, I'd be in dead last.

It appears that D. Hammond has a lock on first place... with my home girl, M. Teal, coming in a close second.

The final four will be played next weekend, and we'll post the final results then. For now, here's the standings.

Party With A Middle-Aged Rocker

David E. sent us over a nice little funny promo:

WVTS on AMdC

We Versus The Shark has shown up a coupla' times this week on AthensMusic.com: First, in a message from the road from tourmates Coulier, and then again yesterday with an album preview - including song samples.

This Weekend In Athens

Happy Good Friday, here's some rock n' roll...

Mikey Dwyer and disco ball not included.
FRI: One of the best bands in Athens for years running, Lona takes the stage at the Caledonia. Really if you've seen 'em, you know they're great. And if you haven't ... seriously, go. They're awesome.

Another interesting act in town is My Siamese Self. They're playing Nuci's Space. I've never heard 'em, but they're fronted by Hope For Agoldensummer's Deb Davis (who also does a lot of writing now for HFAGS). Deb's real cool, so I hope their music will be too. More info here.

Banjo and grimace included.
SAT: Speaking of Hope For Agoldensummer, they'll be performing at Tasty World tonight as part of the Amps For Stamps benefit (something about Amnesty International and writing letters to get folks outta foreign jails or something like that). Joining them will be Astra (who are good) and Ginger Envelope (who I've never heard but have heard good things about). Should make for a charming, relaxing evening.

But if you want another maximum rock n' roll kinda evening, then there's Don Chambers + GOAT's CD release party over at the Caledonia. Technically, the CD's been out for a while, but now it's official, I guess. Anyway, they rock - but you already know that. They've played out a lot lately, but apparently they're going on tour soon, so this might be one of the last shows for a while. Donnie speaks here.

SUN: Happy Easter!

Pylon At AthFest

AthensMusicdotCom has the AthFest scoop. Meanwhile, the official website finally got a tiny update (not much more than what's at AMdC), but they do have the actual CD track listing, and I expect they'll be updating again soon.

The Coolest Blogger Is Still Inferior To The Lamest Normal Person

Don't know how we missed this story when it happened, but apparently Wonkette was blocked from her own SXSW party.

(via Wonkette, duh.)

Editorial: Rock N' Roll Is back

I was in Wuxtry the other day and couldn't help but overhear the following conversation between two folks:

Guy (seeing girl browse rap section): Oh, you like rap?
Girl: Yeah.
Guy: Really? I thought you just liked Rock n' Roll.

I thought it was really awesome that someone just casually dropped the entire phrase "rock n' roll". You don't hear that very often anymore. It conjured up this entire sorta "Booker T & The MG's" feeling. Or maybe The Band. Or that scene in Apocalypse Now where a young Larry Fishburne dances around the boat to the Rolling Stones on the radio.

I'd like to propose that we go back to using the complete phrase instead of just "rock". I mean, rock is fine as a verb - especially when moderated by "out" or "on". But rock n' roll is a real genre. And more than that, kinda connotes a certain time period. I say, when you wanna tell someone what kinda music you like, and you mean anything remotely rock n' roll, say it. Mean it. Live it.

Tonight On Your TV

The pilot episode of The Office: An American Workplace (the American version of the popular BBC series The Office) premieres on NBC tonight at 9:30. Its regular timeslot is going to be 9:30 on Tuesdays, which starts next week (a different episode than tonight's). Apparently the pilot is exactly like the first British episode, then they vary greatly after that. Who knows if it'll be any good.

For fans of the original series, BBC America will be running a season one marathon this Saturday starting at noon and the same with season two the following Saturday. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend taping both of those and watching them at your leisure.

Athens Audio

The Patterson Hood and Brad Morgan show from Monday night at the Watt is now up here for limited time (with a photo). The show actually featured Don Chambers and John Neff as well. Lotsa new material. Thanks to Sloan Simpson!

Tonight In Athens

The Instruments make a rare appearance at Flicker tonight. The band's working on new material and debuting a lot of it tonight. The show's at 8:30, but get their early because even though Flicker's expanded its capacity, it'll still likely sell out. For more, there's this article in F'pole.

There's a buncha other bands playing tonight whose names I recognize, but haven't heard play live yet because I don't go out to shows enough lately (uh oh, here comes old age), but one of them is The Joyful Noise at Lunch Paper. The band features guitarist Marcus Thompson. Marcus Thompson is awesome. Plus, Club Notes says they're good too.

Emotion Eric

The site's pretty simple: You request an emotion; Eric tries to convey it. And yet, I pretty much looked at every one.

F'Pole's SXSW Round-Up (Part 1)

If you've not checked it out yet, Flagpole's posted their SXSW review. I'd just like to add that Jeff Clark's not Faulkner and that I have a second-hand version of the story they mention at the end. Oh, and too bad Vic can't jump through a window, cause... (evs)

If y'all see any Athenian bands mentioned in other SXSW reviews, let us know.

Press Already Fawning Over Vic

In addition to the Paste review (link from AMdC), The Onion also seems to love the new Vic Album. More to come, I'm sure.

UPDATE: Sorry, I'm dumb. That's a link to the Glide review. Though I'm sure Paste'll say nice things too, eventually. It's right up their alley. More reviews in the comments section.

Congressional Meddle

Ok... so I know that posting a Daily Show clip is about the least original thing you can do on your blog...

But, this was a particularly funny clip called Congressional Meddle (in case you missed it Monday night).

More on the Release Front

In addition to the releases mentioned earlier today, there's still more. Although an initial run of the debut album from Acetate was released last year, today marks the official release of "This Band Makes Me Feel" to the masses. If you do not have this album yet, what are you waiting for?

There is also a very extensive list of today's releases over at Large-Hearted Boy. It really is a big day for great music to hit the shelves!

Advisor's Movie Advisory

Death Race 3000: Paul W. S. Anderson is going to update the Roger Corman classic.

Also, I'm inviting everyone here to check out The Incredibly Strange Blog That Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Movie Reviews. It's Incredibly Strange for short. My friend Ben and I love "bad" movies, so we've created a blog to review them for others who might want to check some of them out. We've done about 16 so far, and that's the very tip of the iceberg. So, please visit and comment and stuff.

Day Jobs NCAA Tourney Challenge

Sorry for the lack of updates on our NCAA tourney challenge...

After the first two rounds, R. Tebeau and Hillary are tied for first place with Advisor in a close second.

However, if Illinois gets upset (which they will) most of the people at the top of the pack are gonna be out... let's go UW-Milwaukee!

UPDATE: Here's a screenshot of the standings so far (for those of you who've forgotten your passwords)

Hard Work Vs. Laziness

I know that you guys are constantly debating this internally: Is is more beneficial to be lazy or hard-working?

The lazy guy says, "Hard work has nothing to do with success. As my proof, I offer the entire human race… most people in the world appear to be working hard. But instead of widespread success, there is widespread stress-related disease, broken homes, financial hardships, and a pandemic lack of personal fulfillment - all of it caused by hard work."

The hard worker says, "Laziness is sloth, slacking off. It means succumbing to the emotional impulses of your limbic brain and living more like a lower mammal and less like a fully conscious human being."

Catch the 3-day showdown at slackermanager.com!

via lifehacker

p.s. What a lazy copy/paste post, eh?

Word On The Street (Washington Street)

Rumors were flying all over the place last night, so this is gonna be a lot...

At last night's heftily-priced show, Patterson Hood confirmed the title of his next solo album (which is either now finished or almost finished): Murdering Oscar and Other Love Songs. He says it'll be out whenever the business end will allow it to be. My guess is that you won't see it till late fall at the earliest.

That's partly because fellow Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell's solo record, Sirens of the Ditch (which Hood said is a fancy way of saying "it's about frogs"), will finally be released this summer. I've seen the tracklist, but I can't remember it, so for now, just rest assured "TVA" is on there.

While Jason's touring in support of that record (likely in August), Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley will be celebrating 20 years of playing music together. They want to do something to mark the occasion - a tour and accompanying album loosely titled Twenty Years of Bad Road. The recordings will be mostly rough takes of b-sides and misfit songs from the last 20 years of DBT and before - including some songs from the Adam's House Cat days. They're still wanting to release the Adam's House Cat record, Town Burned Down as well this year.

In related news, Kimberly Morgan & The Everloving Band are finishing up their last few tracks in the studio today and tomorrow, supposedly. Don't know what will happen with their new record, but check back with us about it - she's gonna do an interview soon (soon as I get off my lazy ass and make up some questions).

Southern Bitch (who comprise 3/4's of the Everloving Band) aren't content to rest on their most recent release. They'll be hitting the studio again in May or June, and right afterwards singer Adam Musick will also record his solo record. I've heard a lot of the material from both and really can't wait - my guess is that they'll appear in late fall or winter if that schedule keeps. Till then, they'll keep on touring (going out west and maybe international).

The Chasers (one of the greatest country bands around) are finally mixing and mastering their debut record. Should be done somewhere around June-ish, supposedly. Also, guitarist Marcus Thompson is involved in a new band called The Joyful Noise. He says it's kinda indie-pop-ish. They'll be playing the 40 Watt next month, so look out for that.

Brown Frown is also in the finishing stages of a now quite lengthy recording process. Next month, they'll mount a supporting tour which will culminate in their playing The Human Rights Festival. That's right, The Human Rights Festival. Know who else is gonna be there? Music Hates You. How do you spell awesome trainwreck? I can't wait.

Finally, in kinda sad news for music fans, Heather McIntosh will soon be packing it up and moving her home base to New York. She still hopes to "float back and forth" between the two cities ("pulling a Lemaster"), but surely her cello will be conspicuously absent from time to time. We'll miss her. But before that, you can catch her Thursday at Flicker with her band The Instruments and again next month with Circulatory System at Tasty World. Definitely two "don't miss" shows.

In Stores Now (Pimpin' New West Edition)

The newest from Vic Chesnutt, Ghetto Bells, is now available. It's definitely more somber, vocally-oriented, "jazzy", and moody that Silver Lake, that's for certain. Great musicianship as usual. More info up at New West's Vic site.

In other probably very old news, there's a buncha unreleased songs up at Vic's site as mp3's. The first several are Silver Lake b-sides and are really worth your time and effort to download - often better than the album versions. One of the last coupla' songs (can't remember which) is also decent - just Vic and a piano. Most of the rest are just burps and farts (what some might call "experimental").

Anyway, highly recommend that you pick up the album and download those demos.

Also, as if we hadn't mentioned it enough, the new Drive-By Truckers' DVD, Live at the 40 Watt is out today. Fans already know all about it, so this is just a reminder. Haven't had a chance to see it yet, otherwise, I'd say more.

Pump It Up! (Finally)

Wanted to send a good luck shout-out to Sarah, who will finally start her "rebuilding" today, I hope. Also, if you've not seen this post, it's well worth a read, plus the second comment down on it is really hilarious.

Tonight Beyond Athens

Just down the road, in East Atlanta, Crooked Fingers will be playing The Earl tonight and Liz Durrett will be opening. I only list it because of Liz and because of Crooked Fingers' brief time in Athens. And also because, against my expectations, their new album's actually pretty good. They're always great live too, so if you're up for the drive (or live in Atlanta), I recommend it.

SNL and Penile Implants

Here's a humorous read about Saturday Night Live's attempt at a penile implant.

New R.E.M. Video

Warner has posted the video for R.E.M.'s "Electron Blue" (the second single from Around The Sun). If you scroll a bit, there's a link to it from AMdC's R.E.M. blog.

Athens Audio (Pylon Edition 2!)

For those who had trouble with EasyTree, Sloan has now posted the 8/5/04 Pylon Show up at Digital Panic. It'll probably be up there for less time than EasyTree though, so get it soon. If you need help on how to get it, please refer to the comments in the original post.

Advertising Funnies

My brother sent me a coupla' funny ads I'd completely missed out on whenever they were on TV...

First, there's the Trunk Monkey Ads, which now have a fan site complete with merchandise.

And also there's this Bud Light commercial featuring a product I'd like to have (a lot more than I'd like to have an actual Bud Light, which still tastes like butt no matter how funny their ads are).

Athens Audio

Among the treats of the new Flagpole Music Directory are a coupla' new tracks from The Eskimos, who are still holed up in their studio/compound recording their next album. No word on when their website'll be back up and running, but in the meantime those tracks build my expectations for the new CD.

Tonight In Athens

Patterson Hood and Brad Morgan (of the Drive-By Truckers) perform at the 40 Watt to celebrate the release of the band's first DVD, Live at the 40 Watt. If you've forgotten, this is footage from the Dirty South release shows back in August of last year. They performed in front of sold-out crowds three nights in a row and the DVD is the document of that (it will be available at the show).

Bono: Fashion Merchandising, Global Finance, Ipod Sales

Wolfowitz kisses Irish butt for St. Patrick's day. Too bad it's about 20 years too late to be hip. Why isn't Bono U.N. President yet?

Happy Birthday, Sloan!

It's a day early, but since we don't work on weekends, just wanted to say Happy Birthday to Sloan Simpson. You can't really describe how awesome Sloan is in words, but just let it be known that aside from being overwhelmingly cool as a person, he's often makes the drive from Atlanta to Athens up to four or five times a week to record music while holding down a dayjob and spends much of his free time converting, uploading, and burning those shows free of charge for nearly anyone who wants them.

He literally makes hundreds of people very happy on a monthly or even weekly basis and is one of the biggest supporters of Athens' music I've ever met. If you see him out (anytime, not just this weekend), you should say hello and buy him something. Because he is awesome. Chances are, he'll be at Acetate tonight (look for the audio equipment).

Happy Birthday, Sloan. Hope it's a great one!

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: Acetate brings the rock to the Caledonia. Should be loud and fun and probably the last time they'll perform for a while, as Widespread Panic's gonna hit the road soon. So, catch 'em while you can.

SAT: Knight Seeker is back! The heavy metal karaoke act that lets you in on the fun takes place at the Caledonia. I went last time they played and was blown away by how perfect they nail all those songs (I was too scared to get up and sing, though). Plus, you usually get to see some local musicians get up there sing cheesy metal, so that's great.
[Note: Hayride is not appearing on this bill as was previously the rumor, but rest assured their return to the stage is coming.]

For a different tone, there's also Psyche Origami and Minamina Goodsong at Tasty World. They're starting to bring underground hip-hop up here more often, which is a good thing.

UPDATE: It appears as though Acetate may not be playing tonight afterall. Please refer to the comments section for further updates/clarification on that and if that doesn't answer it, drop by the Caledonia tonight just to see.

Who's Winning...

In case you haven't checked to see who's winning our NCAA challenge...

Advisor is leading the pack.

That's right, the horror movie-lovin', I-don't-know-nothin'-'bout-no-basketball whinin' Advisor. In fact, he got every single pick correct yesterday! That's just hard to believe.

It's still early though.

Advisor's Movie Advisory

Well, it's a short one today, kids, because I'm sick and busy and haven't had much time to surf.

Wonder Woman: It's official. Joss Whedon's signed. You can read the press release at Comics2Film. There's also an official teaser poster that you can click on to make real big. I really hope they use the TV theme song. Make the Axis fold, stop a bullet cold, make a liar tell the truth! Right up there with the Barbarella theme song if you asked me, which is another remake I'd pay to see. Barbarella psychedella...

Ah, Nyquil.

Athens Music News

Saddle Creek's dropped its first news on Maria Taylor's upcoming solo album:

"Maria Taylor will release her debut solo album 11:11 on May 24th, 2005. In advance of the release, she will head out on tour playing dates with Ben Lee and Har Mar Superstar. ... [11:11] features the talents of Cursive’s Gretta Cohn, Now It’s Overhead’s Andy LeMaster, and Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis. LeMaster and Mogis each lent his talents to the recording, production, and engineering of the record, as well..."

Also, Vic Chesnutt's promotion machine's in full effect for Ghetto Bells, which arrives on Tuesday. Check out the cool cover to this month's No Depression (taken in Vic's house with is own antique wheelchair):

WTF? News

Thanks to Sarah for totally grossing us out with this story about a dentist and his preferred (though not yet ADA-approved) toothpaste. It's not entirely safe for work, but then again it is news.

This Year's Midtown

Thanks to Hillary for pointing out that the partially-announced lineup for this year's Music Midtown is looking pretty good. Waiting to hear what the V103 stage has to offer...

Tonight In Athens

A few good shows around... You can catch a rare appearance by Bellhouse, with Astra opening, at the 40 Watt. There's also Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars at Go Bar and Fairmount Fair and Shiitake Knights (aka Special Teams, Transmitter, R.E.N., etc.) at the Lunch Paper.

UPDATE: Sorry, it's Bellhouse opening for Astra. I should really start doing things like "reading" about shows instead of half-assed guessing.

Flagpole Music Directory

Gotta compliment Hassi and the boys on the new Athens Music Directory. This year's version has photos, mp3's, etc. Looks great!

Dayjobbers will be particularly interested in this entry.

A Band Named For What They Make You Long For

These toolboxes are "capable of such rage" ... probably as much as these guys.

I wasn't gonna pay this article any mind until it had me cracking up. Thing is, I think they're serious. But it's really a brilliant interview. I especially like the part about the flyers being torn down where you can almost hear the whimper. Pretty much in HODB territory.

Cool Stuff

For lack of a better title, here are some cool links and news tidbit.

Take a wild ride with this adventurous site. Be careful if you've been drinking and whatnot.

Widespread Panic fans will be happy to hear about these new endeavors into technology. First, Atlanta radio station DaveFM announced yesterday that they will do a live broadcast, with no commercial interuption, of the 2nd night of a three-night stand at the Fox Theatre. This run marks the bands' return to the stage after a much-needed year off.

After countless requests from fans over the years, Widespread Panic (teaming up with nugs.net) is making headway with LiveWidespreadPanic. This site will make all 3 nights of the Fox run available for mp3 download. In addition, mp3 and FLAC files of select shows from the tour will be made available for purchase.

That's the way to embrace technology guys!

Advisor's Movie Advisory

The Hitcher: The remake may not be happening after all, according to Creature-Corner.

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair: Quentin Tarantino did an interview with FilmForce.co.uk and discussed future projects, including when we could see a gorier, combined version of Kill Bill in the theaters.

Tom-Yung-Goon: Movies Online dug up the trailer for Tony Jaa's next film, Tom-Yung-Goong. Tony was previously in Ong-Bak, which kicks ass. It should be a prerequisite in martial arts movies that bones are continuously broken from kung-fu chopping. Note: oddly enough, the Windows Media version of the trailer looked much better than the Quicktime version on my machine at least.

Athens Audio (Pylon Edition!)

I've been waiting quite a while to get to post this. You can now download Pylon's set from the then-unnamed Little King's Bar back in August. This show is amazing (my favorite of last year), and so is the recording. It's all-around one of the best live recordings I've heard and it completely worth your time. Get it here (for a limited time). And for a casual look, here's the info:

Pylon - 8/5/04
Little Kings Bar* - Athens, GA

01) Recent Title
02) Cool
03) Working Is No Problem
04) Gravity
05) Weather Radio

08) II:) Driving School
09) Beep
10) Crazy
11) Dub
12) Volume
13) Feast On My Heart
14) Danger
15) Stop It
16) M-Train

[* Venue was unnamed as of this date, since named Little Kings. Small slips of paper that simply said "Pylon is here, 10:30 p.m. at the corner of Hull and Hancock." laying around downtown were the only advance notice of this show. This was the first Pylon show since 1991.]

If for some reason you've forgotten about it, here's our coverage of it and Pylon's page about it. Thanks as always to the amazing Sloan Simpson.

(Note: If you're having trouble signing up for EasyTree, please post in the comments below and someone will hopefully come to your aid.)

DBT On Video, Film

On Tuesday, the New West Records will release the Drive-By Truckers Live at the 40 Watt DVD. You can check out the details here and folks who attend Patterson's show on Monday night can get it then.

Also, in related news I'm more excited about, Ray McKinnon's debut feature film, Chrystal, will be released next month (finally!). If you're unfamiliar, he directed and starred in the Oscar-winning short film The Accountant (which is awesome). Some of you might remember him also as the "suitor" who beats up George Clooney in Oh Brother Where Art Thou?. Anyway, it starts on April 8th In Atlanta at Regal Tara, Regal Town Center 16, and AMC Mansell Crossing (no word as to whether it'll come to Athens, but likely not). In the meantime, check out their website. And if you're wondering what the connection is, DBT's on the soundtrack (they also wrote their song "Sink Hole" based on The Accountant).

For those who don't read the comments, Robo-Dave came up with this list in response to Legal Bitch's earlier post about Bono's new clothing line. KM provided the link.

following rockers if they had the means, would have a clothing line:

1. eddie money
2. micheal mcdonald
3. peter cetera
4. bruce willis
5. falco
6. debbie gibson
7. tiffany
8. neil schon
9. don dokken
10. richard marx
11. corey hart
12. neil f'ing diamond

you know, neil diamond has the means. why doesn't he come out with a clothing line?

Attention National Film Fans

Our friends over at Commentary DVD (the site that listens to DVD commentaries and writes them up so you don't waste your time) has updated their site with a new design and lots of classic commentaries - plus, a search engine. Makes a great concept even better.

In addition, they sent over a classic David Lee Roth quote:
"The hood ornament on your car is for telling you where you're going. The rear-view-mirror is for showing you how good you look while you're getting there."

Tru dat.

Attention Local Filmmakers

Athens 101 has the call for entries for this year's Sprockets Music + Video Competition. The winner gets their video screened at AthFest. For more info, check out film::athens.

Raffle 4 Life

Since the name's been batted around our comments lately, Hillary thought of us when she read this e-mail:

"I'm selling raffle tickets ($1 each or six for $5) for a $45 gift
certif. to Carrabba's ... This is for Relay For Life."

If you're interested, e-mail Jared.

I Have No Idea What to Say About This...

I tried unsuccessfully for several minutes to think of a funny headline for this, but the article is so ridiculous it makes fun of itself. Apparently, being a Nobel Peace Prize nominee is not enough for U2's Bono. Following in the footsteps of his contemporaries such as J.Lo, P. Diddy, and that Sideshow Bob looking dude from N'Sync, Bono is starting his own fashion line. Where am I supposed to start making fun of this? The name, Edun (nude spelled backwards and oh, how original! also a play on the whole Garden of Eden thing)? Or this priceless gem:

There are also interesting details. For example, some of the T-shirts are made using traditional Incan vegetable dyes and the jeans have a poem embroidered inside their pockets.

"I think you should always have a poem in your pocket," said Bono, pointing to his by German writer Rainer Maria Rilke.

I'm groaning and shaking my head in shame - can you hear me, fellow Dayjobbers???

SXSW - Athens Reprezent!

Yeah, I spelled it that way! South By Southwest is almost upon us, so with that in mind, here's a list of Athens acts going that way this coming weekend. There's mp3's with some of 'em (a great one from Southern Bitch if you haven't heard them before), and check out the hilarious new Of Montreal press photo where it looks like someone shoved the guy from Summer Hymns into frame at the last minute.

Anyway, good luck to all our bands out there - hope you all come back rich and famous (but please don't come back with any more girl jeans than you left with unless they were left by an actual girl and you don't intend on wearing them - I'm looking at you, Jet By Day).

And for anyone making the trek, here's the full schedule.

Advisor's Movie Advisory

First edition! At CS's behest, I'm condensing my posts related to movie news into one or two posts a day. If anyone else thinks of a better name, please pass it along! It was almost Advisor's Lack of Creativity Movie News. Help me out, guys.

The Eye: Bloody-Disgusting has news about the US remake of The Eye. Hideo Nakata (Ring Two here and the original Ringu in Japan) will direct.

Friday the 13th:
Crystal Lake Memories is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com and other online retailers. It comes out October 24th, 2005. Special website archives or something will start in April.

Sin City: The new Sin City trailer is now available at IGN in Quicktime format. You can save it to your computer and watch it over and over! There's also a good interview with Frank Miller about the movie at Comicon.com.

The Toolbox Murders: Tobe Hooper's remake of The Toolbox Murders should be on video shelves today. There's a review here.

The Transformers: Steven Spielberg is producing a Transformers movie. Writers have just been chosen.

Tonight In Athens

At Tasty World, you can catch Don Chambers and The Moaners. If you're unfamiliar with the latter act, they're two girls who rock hard - a Flat Duo Jets / White Stripe-ish kinda thing (check out their website). Definitely worth seeing. Plus, you know, there's Donnie.

UPDATE: Oh, and also there's The Rosebuds and Venice Is Sinking at the Caledonia. Also a pretty great lineup.

Simply a Disgrace

Yesterday our site received about 250 unique visitors. However, only 10 of you signed up to participate in the Day Jobs NCAA Tournament Challenge.

The missing challengers include several TDJ regulars such as Advisor, Robo-Dave, Hillary, Printmaker, Desktop Publisher, Karate Media, Pedro, Boo, Chris Hassiotis, Help Desk Tech, Graphic Designer, Head, and many more.

Now, I expect each and everyone of you to sign up today... Unless you're scared.

End of lecture.

Pitchfork On R.E.M., Liz Durrett

I was all ready to hate the Pitchfork article on the new R.E.M. re-releases. As it turns out, it's not that bad.

Also, in case you missed it, here's their review of Liz Durrett's debut, Husk (which I seem to like a lot more than them - but they seem upbeat about her future).

The HamDog

Okay, so apparently this tasty creation was all over the news and the blogosphere about a month ago, and we just didn't pick up on it. It even made Snopes! It's served at a place called Mulligans in Decatur - anyone every had one? And to answer the question before you ask: yes, of course it's fried!

QT+F13... Denied!

The eerie calm of campus is the perfect backdrop for this depressing news: Quentin Tarantino is passing on Friday the 13th. Sigh.

The Changeling Remake

CHUD.com has some information on a remake of The Changeling. Looks like Peter Medak (the original director) will helm.

Athens Audio

Sloan's put up Don Chambers & GOAT's Set from the 40 Watt last week. Supposedly a really great set by them. Sadly, no pics though. Anyway, get it here for a limited time. Thanks, Sloan.

The Day Jobs NCAA Tournament Challenge

Dayjobbers...

You have been challenged. Fill out an NCAA tournament bracket on ESPN.com and compete with other dayjobbers.

The winner gets... ummmm... I dunno... the winner gets something to be determined later.

Fill out your brackets before Thursday...

Sincerely,
Me

OTC Tix On Sale

Just a reminder: Olivia Tremor Control tickets go on sale today at Lo Yo Yo Stuff and Schoolkids Records - $10 plus whatever extra charges the stores have. I'd advise picking them up sooner rather than later, because the online tix already sold out. If you've forgotten, the show is Friday, April 15th (yup, tax day) at the 40 Watt. Also, here's a functional band site link (instead of that arty crap at their main site).
