Tales from THE REAL O.C. - Two for the Price of One

Citing the previous post, entertainment was scarce in the REAL O.C. I played outside a lot. In the dirt. And got dirty. I ate dirt a couple times too (o.k., maybe 3 times, tops - don't judge me).

The primary reason for keeping us outside was that my dad was a cop who worked 3rd shift, so if we were in the house making a racket and woke his vampire ass up, we'd all get whacked. So mom sent us outside right after school, with a brief intermission to come inside to eat dinner and watch Thundercats at 5:30. Then it was back outside. I LOVED Thundercats. Remember them:

I wanted to be Cheetarah so bad - she was fast, she kicked ass, she was part cheetah or something, and she had an awesome magic staff. She was also the only hot girl/cat in a bunch of hot guys/cats. Oh, and she had superpowers and stuff I think. Anyway, my imagination was vivid enough (or I was just that ignorant back then) that one day I noticed I had little round, brownish spots forming on my arms. I thought "HELL YES, I am turning into Cheetarah!" and ran inside to tell my mom. I ran up to her while she was washing dishes, and I grabbed a broom and pretended it was my magic staff and I was Cheetarah and I was gonna kick some ass and I told my mom about my spotted skin and I was all "THUNDER...THUNDER...THUNDER...THUNDERCATS, HO!!!" My mom dropped her dishtowel, grabbed my arm, examined it, and simply exclaimed "Well hell, sweetie, you've got ringworm! You been eating dirt again?"

Bush: The Legacy Continues To Grow

I was gonna just reprint my absolute favorite Bush quote in a long time (from last night's press conference) in case anyone missed it, but Wonkette beat me to it of course.

I still think he reminded me of David Brent trying to defend himself to Neil on any given episode of the Office. At least, that makes it more amusing to watch.

This Weekend In Athens (Twilight Edition!)

Twilight's here and that is awesome...

FRI: The Twilight outdoor stage features The Weight (back from NY for the weekend) and Cracker. The times seem to conflict depending on where you look, but The Weight will either start at 7 or 7:30 and Cracker will either start at 8 or 8:30, but I'm sure it's all "rock time" anyway. All free and outdoor beer gardens will abound. More on Cracker here.

Afterwards, Frilight takes over the party down at Little King's. Lil' Flip Scoldjah leads the all-star line-up. Definitely the prime place to continue the festivities. Lil' Flip owns, y'all.

Other good options might be the Ginger Envelope / Shiitake Knights show at the Caledonia or Drivin' N' Cryin' at the Georgia Theatre. And as always there's Redneck GReece at Jot 'Em Down at 6PM - food's cash only.

SAT:First off, there's the bike races. The full schedule is here. I can't say enough about how much fun it is to wander around downtown in the mayhem. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Then, the 6th annual Twilight Delirium brings Je Suis France back to the 40 Watt stage this year. Besides the France, you've got Iron Hero, Rump Posse, and the GBV cover band "King Shit & The Golden Boys". The event is always fun, and totally worth your time/money. Better if you drink, but then again, so are most things. More on Rump Posse here.

But if that's not your speed, there's also Audition with Max Reinhardt at Go Bar and Astra at the Caledonia.

BBQ

Not to get you too hungry before lunchtime, but this is worth a shout out. I've mentioned their food here before, but now I will reiterate since they just got a really nice write-up on AtlantaCuisine.com as their pick of the week. The next time you go to Smith's Olde Bar for a show, be sure to try my friends' bbq. These boys from Texas know how to do it up right and you won't be disappointed.

Buried Treasure Boys Go Down

In a surprising twist, yesterday's story about the boys that found buried treasure in a backyard just got a lot more interesting. It seems the boys stole the buried treasure from the roofers who really found the treasure in a barn they were repairing. Now the boys, who had made several tv appearances this week about their sudden luck, are sitting in the jailhouse.

So search your barns and remember, crime doesn't pay!

Still Hot for Teacher

Everybody remember the whole Mary Kay Letourneau/Vili Fualaau thing from a few years back (6th grade teacher who is a mother of 4 sleeps with student, gets preggers, gets arrested, gets preggers again, does hard time, gets released and goes back to her boy-toy). Well, they're getting married! And apparently, according to this, Entertainment Tonight dished out some dough to have the film rights to their wedding. What a modern day love story - it's got adultery, statutory rape, bastard children, and jail time! Lifetime television here we come!

Tales from The REAL O.C. - Oconee County, Beyotch!

So this will be a new weekly column by me, Legal Bitch, where we will juxtapose the crap you see weekly on The O.C. with a true story from my life growing up in Oconee County. For those of you who know me well, you know that I didn't have a typical upbringing, nor do I have typical family members. And I grew up in Oconee County (obviously). (Since W prevented me from watching The O.C. last night, just assume it was a normal episode with skinny girl, dark haired girl, indie ironic nerdy boy, and brooding boy, and they get into some sticky situation which is resolved in an hour, and some making out occurs or someone gets in a fight. There you go, I saved you an hour.)

Our first tale from The REAL O.C. begins in Oconee County, circa 1984. I had no friends back then (do I even now??), and I didn't live in a suburban neighborhood like you guys, I lived on a road. It was common to hear roosters crowing or gunshots ringing out in the distance. Entertainment was scarce and there weren't any kids around my age to play with, so I had to make my own fun. I watched lots of t.v., and one day I happened to catch Saturday Night Fever on Superstation TBS (back then it was just Channel 17 on the UHF dial). I thought it would be AWESOME to have a light-up dance floor like Travolta did. So what did Lil' LB do? I took all my construction paper out, taped it together on the floor of our living room, and started practicing my super kick-ass dance moves (I figured I would enlist the help of my brother or my uncle later to work out the whole lighting issue for my new dance floor). Naturally, my brother caught me, made fun of me, and told our mom. My mom got pissed and told me to pick all my crap up off the floor, and she better not find any scotch tape stuck to the hardwoods or I'd be getting an ass-whupping from my grandma (more on her in later installments, what a hardass). So, I picked it up. But I didn't want to waste my construction paper, so I decided to take my hole punch and make confetti and have a party with my Barbies! So I punched all the construction paper into confetti and threw it in the air in the kitchen during Barbie's Tea Time when we found out that Skipper had her first kiss with my brother's G.I. Joe doll. My mom was seriously pissed then. We found confetti in the kitchen for years. And she took away my hole punch.

Extras

The fix reports that "Ricky Gervais, of the BBC's "The Office," and his production partner Stephen Merchant have signed a deal with HBO to bring a show called "Extras," about an aspiring actor, to U.S. cable TV." Sounds interesting...

...but the real reason I mention this is to say that Mail Clerk commented that Dubya seemed very David Brent-ish last night during the press conference. Can we convince HBO to hire Gervais as the star of a show about an American president? Call it "Freedom and Liberty"... or "The Right Wing"... or "People Say I'm Blunt".

Did Robo-Dave Hack the 40 Watt Web Site?

Thanks to DVD Guy for the screen cap

Props for Geeks and Nerds

Someone over at craigslist has written a nice piece about why geeks and nerds are good bf material. Maybe I have hope if enough gay boys read this...

Land of the Dead Trailer

Yahoo's already got it, here. Thanks to Ben for the tip.

Reading Between the Lines of the Headlines

According to CNN, Tom Cruise has a new girlfriend...it's none other than Joey Potter herself, KATIE HOLMES! Am I the only one who thinks this is kinda weird/gross? This brings so many questions up in my mind...like:
1. Why would Joey Potter sell out to be a beard for Maverick?
2. Does Katie Holmes really need that much free publicity for her summer blockbuster, Batman Begins? I'm going to see it because Christian Bale is in a tight batsuit. Hi-yo!
3. What is Dawson going to think? First Pacey, now this??? Poor Dawson, he of the large forehead and flaring nostrils, just simply can't compete with this.
4. Is Katie Holmes a scientologist? I thought Tom Cruise was so attached to his religion that sharing that interest would be of utmost importance in relationships. I guess it doesn't matter if the chick is hot. With big boobs. She's really tall too (like 5'9") and Tom Cruise is a midget.
5. He's 42 and she's 26. Don't they know the Demi/Ashton rules for dating are like, soooo 2003???

So my challenge to you, Dayjobbers, is to pick the next unlikely celebrity couple. Comment away!

...Like A Rabid Monkey

These guys and his friend found a ton of buried treasure. Awesome for them, sucks for everyone else who's always wished for something like that. Anyway, it can happen.

Tonight In Athens

The second in a series of three stops on their local "wear out our welcome tour" (no, I'm not making that up - look for the posters) Astra plays the Caledonia tonight. If you've not heard 'em, it's kinda sleepy but also kinda charming. So, if you've got a cup o' coffee, it's worth checking out.

Advisor's Movie Advisory

Mysterious Skin: Even if you don't like Gregg Araki, his next film looks like it could be pretty good. The trailer is on this page in various formats. Joseph Gordon-Levitt supposedly gives a pretty good performance. It's also got Elisabeth Shue and Michelle Trachtenberg.

Summer Storm: It's so rare that anything resembling a really good gay movie comes along, so I have to bring this to the attention of those who might care. It's a German film, called Sommersturm there, and it's got an 8.3 rating on IMDB that I pretty much agree with. There's a limited release in the US on July 22nd, but, well, if you really want to see it earlier, it's possible (and with English subs no less). The trailer is here, and, even though I don't think it reflects the film that well, it's got a brief glimpse of boobies so the str8 guys can enjoy this post. You can check out clips from the enjoyable, mostly English soundtrack there as well. Definitely one I'll be shelling out money for when it's officially available in the US.

Decorate Your Desk w/ Mario and Luigi

This site has some cool 3-D dioramas of scenes from Super Mario Brothers. It'd make a great decoration for your desks... nerds.

Ralph Reed in the House

Ralphy is in Athens tonight to talk about his bid for Lt. Governor.

If anyone sees him, can you get an answer to my question?

Happy Secretary's Day!

To everyone who slaves out there for very little money, underappreciated in your crappy office environment, I hope you enjoy the newly-rechristened "Administrative Professionals Day". I don't think the President's gonna give a speech or anything, but you know, keep it up. Of course, to celebrate, here's the only song I know of written about this holiday: The Fairburn Royals' "Secretary's Day" (version 1, version 2). And for the college kids, you might wanna just go ahead and celebrate it now, given the economy. Why wait till you graduate?

As a sidenote, the band has announced their final show on their (nicely redesigned) website. On the rooftop of Wuxtry on May 15th. They also have a final Covers EP to release, which the site says will be in May. In the meantime, you can download .mp3's of their recent 40 Watt performance as well.

Rock on, all you secretaries!

DUNKLEMAN!

Inspired by a recent Family Guy TV spot, Vet Pharmacist went looking for a lost figure in American culture. What she found was... well, pretty damn hilarious.

Where The Buffalo Volley

Anytime you mix a pack of wild buffalo with suburbia, I'm bound to enjoy the results.

Tonight In Athens

Tons of good stuff tonight. Hope For Agoldensummer and Liz Durrett are both at the 40 Watt and that's great by itself. But if you add Nutria at the Caledonia, then it's a fantastic night for Athens music. Personally, I'll be buying two tickets and walking back and forth. For more about Hope For Agoldensummer, see the mega cover story article from Flagpole. There was also an ABC box for Nutria and a Liz Durrett article in the Banner that has a bit about her next album.

Of course, there's that little thing happening at the Classic Center. Elvis Costello's surely gonna be great and word is there's still tickets left. Also, if you bring those ticket stubs to the Caledonia show, I think there's some sort of discount involved.

Good night to go out.

OHarmony

Not quite gay marriage, but...

(via Wonkette.)

Large Hearted Boy's Note Books

LHB has a new feature called "Note Books" that sounds pretty interesting. The boy says it is "a weekly feature where musicians will stop by and write a short piece on their current reading, influential books, or literary leanings."

The series is kicked off today by John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats.

Pope Chicken Breast

Hillary send us the link to the latest miracle saying, "It looks more like one of those Easter Island heads to me, but what do I know?" Personally, I'm siding with it actually being a William S. Burroughs chicken breast, but whatever. Thanks, Hillary!

Advisor's Movie Advisory Pt II - Trailers

Batman Begins: MTV.com has the new trailer if you can get it to work.

Serenity: At about 4pm EST today, the trailer for Joss Whedon's Serenity should hit the web, probably at Apple in the Quicktime trailers section, but, if not, check Whedon's site or the Serenity fan site.

And, as Ben reminds me, the Land of the Dead trailer comes out Friday.

Advisor's Movie Advisory

The Birds: Another remake from Platinum Dunes, but this time it's Hitchcock.

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things: Another Bob Clark remake, but this time he's writing and directing it himself.

Land of the Lost: A comedic remake with Will Ferrell.

Tweens + Roid Rage = AWESOME!

Check out this article over at CNN which talks about how steroid use among pre-teen & teenage girls is on the rise (for both athletic and appearance reasons). Man, if only the girls on the softball team back in high school were stackin' back in the day we could've won state or something. Ah, coulda, woulda, shoulda!

Heads Up

Be sure to jump on the Dinosaur Jr. ticket pre-sale for the Variety Playhouse show today at noon. You can purchase tickets early through the Dinosaur Jr. online ticketing service. Be the first on your block to have a ticket for the show on July 8!

Tonight In Athens

A pretty eventful few days starts off tonight with Bloodkin at the Caledonia and Summer Hymns at the 40 Watt. Strangely enough, it's been a little while since either's played out in their full lineups, so either would be well worth catching. For those not familiar, the former is straight ahead rock n' roll and the latter is a more jangly, beach boys-infused Southern pop (sorry, not good at descriptions). In any case, worth going out for.

Athens Audio

(Photo taken from www.elfpower.com)

Thanks to Sloan Simpson, the audio for the Elf Power set (opening for The Olivia Tremor Control) is now available for bit torrent download. Go get you some!

Editorial: Insurgents Lack Basic Videography Skills

So, CNN's showing yet another video of an insurgent attack. Seems those guys, much like high school vandals, really love filming their exploits. The thing is, as well-trained as they might be at blowing stuff up, insurgents really don't seem very good at shooting video footage. For instance, if some dude told me, "This is gonna be a one-time only thing, make sure you get a good shot," I would at least have the camera pointed in the direction of the action.

I mean, did you see the 'convoy video' a few months back? CNN was all hyped like, "check out this amazing footage". What it turned out to be was some guy jumping up and down with a camera in his hand filming some trucks on a highway with gunshot sounds coming from somewhere. The Blair Witch cinematographer was more focused. Seriously, if y'all're gonna use these videos to freak people out, at least let them see what it is they're supposed to be freaked out about. Home video of your local highway with the Steady Shot turned off isn't gonna do the trick.

Another Year Older, and All I Got Was This Stupid Email

I turned 29 yesterday (actually 29, not really 33 and just lying about it). Thanks to my fellow dayjobbers who celebrated with me and made it a little less painful. You guys rule.

But I have gotten some strange birthday wishes. While checking my email last night, I found this email from E!Online wishing me a happy birthday:

Hi there,

Happy birthday from the gang at E! Online. Hope it's a great one!

You also share your birthday with the following celebrities:

Cedric the Entertainer 1964 Jefferson City, Missouri
Barbra Streisand 1942 Brooklyn, NY
Brian Marshall 1973 Fort Walton Beach, FL
Derek Luke 1974 Jersey City, New Jersey
Djimon Hounsou 1964 Cotenou, Benin
Eric Balfour 1977 Los Angeles, California
Eric Bogosian 1953 Woburn, Massachusetts
Kelly Clarkson 1982 Burleson, Texas
Michael O'Keefe 1955 Paulland, NJ
Shane McDermott 1976 Middletown, Texas
Shirley MacLaine 1934 Richmond, VA

Be sure to check out what's new this week at E! Online: http://www.eonline.com

So apparently I should be thrilled that I share my special day with Kelly Clarkson and Cedric the Entertainer (and Babs, ohmygawd, she's like buttah!). Getting older sucks even more when people send you this crap.

Tough Waking Up in the Morning

If you're having a hard time waking up in the morning, this may be the alarm clock for you. It requires you to not only find it (because it hides itself in your room each day), but then you have to "physically wrestle it to the ground and overcome its seizing (read: mild rumbling) in an attempt to find the off button."

So you'd be on time every day... but grumpy.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Let us know what you did this past week that was really friggin' great. This way we can all do that exact same thing in the coming weeks, rendering it ultimately uncool. Thanks! (Comment away in the comments section - even you people that visit but never usually comment!)

Wonkette's Time-Wasting Tip

While I'm busy completing my "just link to everything Wonkette posts" week, there's a great new way to waste time with Google.

Screen Grab Fiesta

Make sure you don't miss Hillary's recent screen grab; it's hilarious (I can't get the permalink to work though, so just scroll till you see the NYT screen grab). Wonkette had a great one recently too.

Goth Nipple Piercing Update!

Don't know how he got ahold of this stuff, but Dan sent us the following in regards to yesterday's goth nipple-piercing sponsorship post:

"Thought you might like to see the pre-Goth look (pic 1, pic 2). How about The Day Jobs sponsor this glorious event?"

Thanks Dan, but we're all really poor. Publicity though, we can do. Good luck on the piercing, goth girl!

Advisor's Movie Advisory

It's Superman! Brandon Routh in the new costume.

Addition: It's Ghost Rider! And he's got the skeletal look down.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: The action’s all at Tasty World, where you can catch Murder Beach and Tracer Matula upstairs and Psyche Origami downstairs. So, you know, power pop or alt-rap. Your choice. The upstairs show is a benefit and also has some cool thing where you can burn yourself a CD of the music of the bands performing while you’re there. The downstairs show is a rare treat (but thankfully getting more frequent). Can’t lose, really. More info about the benefit in Threats & Promises this week.

And don’t forget the weekly appearance of Redneck Greece at Jot ‘Em Down BBQ – show starts at 6PM; place has great barbeque and is cash only.

SAT: Things get a bit more complicated and spread out. Firstly, there’s the Human Rights Festival. You can see the entire schedule in Flagpole or in the Banner, and there’s a story on it by Julie Powell in the Banner, but as long as you’re down there by 6PM (or around… you know, festival time and all), I’d recommend at least seeing these folks (not that the others aren’t good; I just can’t say for sure):

6:00 p.m. Erik Hinds
6:45 p.m. Jackpot City
7:45 p.m. Music Hates You
8:30 p.m. Brown Frown (read Flagpole article on them)
(Major political talk time – go get dinner?)
10:15 p.m. Five Eight

That’s a pretty great lineup, I’d say. Cool to see Jackpot City back in the mix. And you oughta be done in enough time to go see Patton Oswalt at the 40 Watt. Really, he’s easily one of the top 2 or 3 living comedians and has been for years. If you factor Brian Posehn and Zach Galifianakis into the mix, you really have to see this show.

That being said, there’s also the rare and awesome opportunity to see The Chasers play at Foxz. That’s a great place for them and they haven’t played in a while, so a High Life and good country sounds really appealing… man, why do people do this to me?

SUN: Not sure about much of the stuff going on at the Human Rights Festival, but it’s probably worth going by. Again, here’s the schedule. Hope y’all enjoy the weekend!

Local Goth Needs Piercing Subsidy

Thanks to T.B. for this:

"Proof that the new 8% tuition hike at the University of Georgia is having an adverse affect on the student body."

Pylon, Styx, Bolton!

The official announcement about the upcoming Pylon performance we'd hinted at has been made:

Corey Haim

From Hillary:

"He's clean, but fat. The video is worth watching just for the bit when
she writes on the blackboard."

(via Defamer.)

The Pope Lives

I know, I know...so many Pope jokes these days. But the Onion has some great pieces right now. There's the slideshow "A Pope Remembered" and a funny piece on the Catholic Sin Binge. Best of all news, however, is that the Pope has now emerged as a butterfly.

Of Politics & Accessories

Wonkette's been on a pretty good roll lately. Whatever you do, don't miss this post. And this bit about Rove was great too.

Harvey Milk Update

For those who don't read the comments, frequent site visitor and all-around cool guy stopped by to update us about the now-swirling Harvey Milk rumors:

"Ouch! Was I scooped by troubleman (and greg)? Well, yes and no. I can say that all parties have agreed to do "some things" and those things seem to include recording a new cd and doing a few shows in mid july (probably). likely one of those shows will happen here in the classic city. all this info just comes from chatting with my pals in the band and there are many many details to work out about all this, of course...but at this point, the wheels are rolling, which is a big step. for anyone wondering, the HM lineup will be the original band with paul on drums and creston and steven, of course. lots of folks are really excited about this and even the harvey milk guys are amazed at the level of interest. i, for one, couldn't be happier about the whole thing."

...Me neither. This is gonna rock. Thanks, Iglooist!

Rock Snobs

Here's an interesting site for The Rock Snob*s Dictionary, a seemingly quick primer for clueless guys like me who get left out of music nerd conversations. You can read sample entries and even write in and nitpick to one-up other music snobs.

Harvey Milk Reunion?

Thanks to Greg for pointing out that if you go here, you'll read the following in a post dated 4/5/05:

"HARVEY MILK- many many things planned, the triumphant return of said band. We are very very very happy to be doing this, look for some unreleased records, recorded by some very special people, Compilation LP/CD, and in a shocking turn of events, they will be getting back together to record a brand new goddamn record. That probably should have been all caps. HARVEY MILK. MORE INFO SOON"

If it's true, that's pretty cool. I haven't seen those guys around in a while, so who knows if it's happening or in what incarnation. Hopefully frequent site visitor Iglooist'll drop by with some more info (and to explain why he didn't e-mail us about it in the first place - jeez man, knowledge is power!).

In any case, even just re-issues would be cool news, so this is great.

Athens Audio

There's lotsa Neutral Milk Hotel floating around the BT sites right now. The ones found so far are: Radio sessions, Carrboro NC, and Terrastock Festival - all from '98. Since it's been a few days, you might wanna get 'em ASAP. Thanks to Sloan Simpson for the heads up (even if our reaction has been very delayed in posting about it).

Tonight In Athens

The Visitations and Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise open up the show for Cigarello's CD release at the 40 Watt tonight. It's a whole buncha music I've yet to hear, but I hear great things about The Visitations and since Marcus Thompson's in The Joyful Noise, it's got to be good.

Olivia Tremor Control Audio

Audio from Olivia Tremor Control's reunion show at the 40 Watt on April 15, 2005 is now available. Everyone thank Sloan and/or Printmaker in the comments.

Fred Durst Demo Tape

This has been making the rounds recently... See Fred Durst's first demo tape.

He was "to the extreme".

Athens Audio

Just a heads up that the audio from The Instruments show from March 24 at Flicker is now available on EzT thanks to Sloan Simpson.

Watch Those Elbows

Simplebits has a nice analysis of the shared elbow space situation that occurs on buses, planes, etc. This situation doesn't usually apply to me because I normally end up next to the chubbiest stranger on the plane. It's usually their sides (not their elbows) that are hogging the armrest.

Time-Wasting Tips: Identifying The Office Snitch

It seems like due to politics, insecurity, and the fact that some people are just a-holes for life, every office has a snitch. Their motivations are the same as any snitch in any classic gangster film: bettering themselves through ratting out the supposed wrongdoings of others. The thing about an office snitch is that it's not usually the weasely person or the curmudgeon you have to look out for - it's the glad-handers.

They're really not much different from elementary school hall monitors: they'll turn you in one minute, then wanna desperately be part of your hang-out group the next. Doing whatever it takes to be cool to the establishment and cool to the actually cool folks is the M.O. So, if you can figure out who it is in your office who's most likely to turn in other folks and you can avoid them, you've cleared one major hurdle on the way to a more relaxing office environment (less work).

And yes, it can be inferred by this that you might be hearing less from me, a recent victim of the O.S., in the near future. So it goes. Watch your back, dayjobbers!

Paul Rudnick's Living Will

I like Paul Rudnick solely for the fact that he wrote the screenplay to Addams Family Values, but his living will over at the New Yorker has some funny parts. It'll help waste that last hour at work, regardless.

Find Your Earplugs

It's official! Dinosaur Jr. has announced their American tourdates and the one closest to Athens is at the Variety Playhouse on July 8. They have also launched an official Dinosaur Jr. website (to go along with the pre-existing J Mascis website). These tourdates only cover the east coast and midwest so, I assume, if all are getting along, more dates will come along at a later date.

Athens Audio

The audio from Southern Bitch's performance at the Caledonia on Saturday night can be found here. Not sure how it sounds on tape but it was a pretty great show if you were there. Get it while it's hot. Thanks as always to the ever-awesome Sloan Simpson.

And as a sidenote, I've been assured that the Olivia Tremor Control show will be posted if/when the band okays it. So, hopefully we'll post about it soon.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Hey Y'all: Let us know what you saw/did/experienced/tasted/heard/whatever in the last 7 days that you liked. We wanna know, so we can tell other people we "heard it was good". Post away in the comments section...

Another Rumor About Tonight

I know that my credibility is now in question about things like this...

TDJ received an e-mail from an anonymous source... and he says there might be something going on after the show tonight. However, I'm not allowed to directly say what it is... I have to make the announcement cryptic. So here goes nothing:

DANGER! Check for MICE after tonight's 40 Watt show at Jittery Joe's roasters on Broad...

Who knows if it's true, but it's worth checking out.

BrewFest

Since tickets are already sold out, you already know if you're going or not, but just a reminder that Classic City Brewfest is taking place on Saturday at the Classic Center. If you're going, have fun; if not, watch out for drunks.

...And remember StrongBad's "Property Of Ones": A One That Isn't Cold Is Scarcely A One At All.

OM Meets OC

No, not Oconee County... Of Montreal's "Requiem For O.M.M." was featured on last night's episode of The O.C. entitled "The Rager". And for that matter, so was Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" (the website has a list of music under "Features", but there's no direct link). Just thought I'd mention it (especially as Sarah insists it's very post-worthy).

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: Obviously, the place to be is the 40 Watt to see the return of Olivia Tremor Control. Elf Power's opening, and it should prove to be one awesome night. But if you're going, you already know it cause it's sold out. For more info, there's this F'pole article and this Banner article.

If you're not going (or even if you are as they don't overlap), there's always the new Friday night stand-by: Redneck GReece at Jot 'Em Down BBQ.

One sidenote: Those awaiting the return of Texas Death Machine (i.e. me) will simply have to wait longer, since they won't be performing tonight (even though it's listed). If you're not familiar - they're a great group of drunks who worship the MC5 and the Supersuckers and land comfortably in between. They kick ass.

SAT: The place to be this night is the Caledonia to see the return of Southern Bitch to an Athens stage after having been on tour for a while. To increase the coolness of that, there's also Lona and Ben Mize - both of whom have also been playing rarely as of late. Really great line-up. I'll be there... drinking.

But if hard rock n' roll's not your speed there's some other cool stuff happening as well. The Go Bar is playing host to The Good Ship and Ginger Envelope (followed by late night disco), Col. Knowledge & The Lickity Splits play Little Kings, and there's this show at Nuci's Space featuring transplants Jim White and Geoff Reacher and new local combo group Lake City.

Or of course, there's alway the Boybutante (which is for a good cause and I hear tale is quite fun - though I've never been cause I'm always poor). If you go, please take some pictures and send them to us!

Rapture Ready

I'm a few days late on this... but I had a story to tell you:

The other day, a lady came up to me and said, "The Pope's dead! The anti-christ is gonna rise up!"

I was baffled... "What?" I said.

"It says it in the Bible, when the Pope dies the anti-christ is gonna rise up and there'll be a rapture!"

I said, "So let me get this straight... this is the first pope to ever die?"

She says, "No, it's in the Bible... something about this Pope and the end of the world."

I said, "Where'd you get that from?"

She says, "My husband, you can ask him."

I said, "Evs"...

But... I found myself reading raptureready.com and found this story. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No... it's the rapture!

Carl Lewis Music Video

Carl Lewis and the Electric Storm's video for "Break it Up" is awesome. That's basically all I can say on the topic.

Fiddy Vs. GBV

You can get your 50 Cent fix and your GBV fix in the same place now.

Tonight In Athens

Dromedary brings their allottamusicfromaroundtheworld-fusion instrumental music to the Healing Arts Centre. Truthfully, I'm not a "world music" fan by any stretch of the imagination, but these guys are pretty great. Show starts at 9:30. See this page for more info.

As a sidenote: Is anyone on Ice watch? No sign yet, but the back door to the Ritz is definitely open ... He could be anywhere.

Nintendo A Capella

This singing group presents a touching homage to Nintendo themes.

Vick Gives The Gift That Keeps On Giving

The Smoking Gun has the dirt on the lawsuit against Michael Vick, including certain details that prove he wasn't paying attention in health class. I kinda feel bad for everyone involved here, but man, you gotta be responsible. (Great pseudonym, though!)

Durst: Satanist

What hath Florida wrought? Apparently Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit frontman, goatee stylist, and Internet porn "star"/apologist) will be appearing as a kidnapping Satanist in the upcoming series "Revelations". No word on whether Satan (who's purportedly elbow-deep in the "musician"/"actor") will make an appearance. More at Gawker.

Twilight Festival

Athens' Twilight Festival has announced its music lineup for this year's event (4/29-5/1). Cracker will be the headliner, along with Nate Nelson and The Weight. See ya there!

...Points & Laughs As One As Well

Wonkette's got links to two different ways America stands as one.

UPDATE: Apologies to Mr. Hassiotis who'd sent us a direct link to the video last week. Neither of us could get it to load (me because of a crappy computer, CS because of technical errors), so we had no idea what it was. He adds this great tidbit, though:

"This guy Dennis "Danger" Madalone is a Hollywood stuntman who's worked on many Star Trek series as well as on movies like Pulp Fiction, Army of Darkness and UHF, and also did stunt work for "That's My Bush!" ... So he's totally awesome."

Hopefully, some of y'all can see it and come back tell us how awesome it'll be when we can, godwilling, someday view it. In any case, thanks for the link Chris! We'll try to not be incompetent next time.

DJ Danger Mouse + Cee-Lo = Probably Awesome

Pitchfork's taken a break from all their 'unveiling', 'revealing', and 'announcing' news to drop this little bit about an upcoming collaboration between former Athenian DJ Danger Mouse and the damn fine Southern rap/soul artist Cee-Lo Green (you know, the Soul Machine). This is probably gonna be completely awesome, despite the project title.

Yo Pope

Hillary sent us some interesting graffiti that "honors" the Pope.

Oh, man. This is creepy. But let's be honest: Is baseball really America's favorite pastime?

Prix Fixe

Hillary's posted a good tip over at AthensWorld on how to do fine dining cheaply at Five & Ten.

UPDATE: Apologies to Stef, who posted that actual info. I saw Hillary's name at the bottom and since it was about food ... well, you get it. Sorry. Also missed it in Hillary's column.

We Have Not Been Shot ... Yet

Sorry to be self-indulgent, but just wanted to say a public thanks to Athens 101 for the well-wishes this week. Just got around to reading it, but thanks!

In Mp3 News

Check out this duet of Liz Durrett and Vic Chesnutt doing a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere." This song was recorded for a Tiaa-Cref commercial. (While you're there, poke around and listen to some of the other mp3s, including the Tom Waits and Lou Reed covers.)

Cartoon Fridge

They say, "We have collected the best cartoons available and put them on a server so you can watch them anytime you want from anywhere you want... "

After reading that, I was skeptical. It seemed too good to be true, but...

Sure enough, they have an online library of episodes from the Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and much more. Unfortunately, the site only seems to work on IE... but that's easy to get over.

So, go check it out.... Cartoon-Fridge.com

Cuss Control

The Cuss Control Academy is dedicated to exactly what the name implies (though, not necessarily improved diction). The thing is: they're serious. So of course, it's really funny. Take their "Ten Tips for Taming Your Tongue" section for example: ignoring the fact that this is the Internet and that's the first time that phrase has been used seriously (just look at those lips!), the fact that they really only have 9 tips and a cop-out to fill the 10th position is pretty funny.

Also, I found this article through a series of links from this Wonkette post, which itself is very funny. Oh, and don't miss the "Workplace Profanity" section!

Dance, White Boy, Dance

I think this guy got caught in the act. But hey, he's got moves.

More on AthFest

AthFest has extended its deadline for booking the outdoor stages. If you are in a band and want to play, you have until April 22nd to get your entries in.

Partial lineups for some of the bars are up on the site as well.

7 Degrees of DBT

Not your typical place to find a review of a local band, but Reuters gives us the lowdown on a recent Drive-By Truckers show in LA. (I didn't know they used the word "badass" on that site.) The Mercury News also has an interview with Jason Isbell along with Glide Magazine listing the band as the current featured artist.

Although not an Athens band, Slobberbone has close ties with many Athens folks and is also considered by me to be a very, very great rock band. Well, they played their final shows in Texas a few weeks ago and here is the audio of their last show. (Thanks to Adam Richards.) I get teary-eyed just thinkin' about it.

Brent Best, the lead singer of Slobberbone, is also part of a band called South San Gabriel that brings together the folks in Centro-Matic and Athens' own pedal steel player Matt Stoesel. South San Gabriel's brand new release, The Carlton Chronicles: Not Until The Operation’s Through, is now available in record stores. If anyone's already taken a listen, let us know what you think.

Centro-Matic recently played quite a memorable show at the Tasty World. Their drummer, Matt Pence, is an extremely talented photographer and has put together a nice slideshow of their visit here, including pictures of opening bands Lake City (Athens) and The Baptist Generals (Texas). Not to mention, there are a couple pictures of newborn Ava Hood (daughter of Patterson Hood) along with mom Rebecca Hood. Oh, and dogs too. Very cute dogs.

Athenian Becomes UFC Series Champ

Some of you might recognize Forrest Griffin, albeit in a less bloody form, from his days as a regular at the Engine Room. But on Saturday, he won the final fight in Spike TV's "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series (by unanimous, but close decision), which earns him a six-figure UFC contract.

The best part is that apparently in an interview beforehand the fighter he beat said he prepared for the fight by training vigorously, abstaining from sex, and changing his diet. Forrest on the other hand apparently training by drinking and abstaining from vigorous training (or so he says). More details about the fight here on the show's official site, and also here's a Banner interview with him from back in January. Congrats, Forrest!

Monday Morning Sound-Off (A Day Late)

Continuing the idea from last week (I guess it'll be weekly now), drop us a line in the comments if you experienced anything great last week(end). Good music, movies, books, tv, things to do, places to see, people you met, etc. If you liked it a lot, we wanna hear about it so other people can do it too. Last week, folks seemed to like Of Montreal and the Blind Pig a lot, for example. Who knows what this week'll bring. Comment away...

In Stores Now

The Sunlandic Twins, the new album by Of Montreal, is released today. It's 13 tracks of really fun pop with a lot of electronic backing tracks (well, at least 10 or so of the tracks fit that description) - plus, there's currently a bonus disc with it that adds another four (at least 2 of which are worth having). Anyway it's a really great CD - especially to have for spring weather which seems to make most music sound better, but this kinda stuff especially. Well worth your money. More info here.

Advisor's Movie Advisory

The Crazies: Brad Anderson (The Machinist) is going to direct the remake of George Romero's film. Scott Kosar, who did the screenplay for the Texas Chainsaw remake, The Machinist, and The Amityville Horror remake, will do this one as well.

The Hills Have Eyes: Bloody-Disgusting has a casting rumor for the remake.

Intruder: I asked at Best Buy about this, and the release has been pushed back to May 10th. However, my friend Ben borrowed my VHS and put up a review at our movie blog, Incredibly Strange. We just added that Atom and RSS stuff, too, and we've got quite a few more reviews since last I mentioned it, so check it out.

Night Watch: The trailer for this Russian horror/scifi flick has gotten me excited, as has the teaser for the sequel, Day Watch.

Athens Audio

Okay joke's over, back to work*...

Sorry for the delay, but Sloan Simpson has posted the Circulatory System show from a week or so ago at Tasty World. Not much of a tracklist because it was mostly new material, but the show was great. Check it out here - and get it quickly if you're interested, because it's been up a coupla' days. Thanks, Sloan!

(*=It should be noted that in the year this site's existed, I'm pretty sure there's only ever been one working day on which we've not posted something. Could be wrong, but I think that's true.)
