This
news story is almost unbelievable. I'll let the article do the talking. The article title is priceless though.

Pizza Anyone?
There's an interesting story in today's local headlines. It seems the owner of Little Italy has gotten himself into a
little trouble. I hope this does not impact the delivery of those great slices to my mouth.
Athens Audio
Here is the
bit torrent of the Jack Logan and Monday Night Recorders set from the Friday night of AthFest at the main stage. Thanks to Sloan Simpson for the upload.
Google Earth
If you haven't tried it already, go give
Google Earth a spin. It starts off with a wide satellite view of earth... then you type in a search like "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington D.C." and it flies right in to your address. Then you can tilt/zoom the camera, get directions, find nearby grocery stores, etc. It's really amazing.
The Athens satellite images aren't as clear as most big cities... but the Atlanta images are very clear. You can see cars along the expressway and throughout the city. Cool stuff.
Even cooler is the
new add-on that lets you map Flickr photos near a place that you're viewing with Google Earth. I imagine there'll be many more add-ons like this one...
Anyways... enough gushing... here's a screenshot:

In Case You Missed It
In yesterday's comments, Printmaker posted this (watch out for the suspiciously fake pop-up in the link):
"
Here's something completely inappropriate to this post, video of a guy on a trash-TV talk show finding out he's not the baby's daddy."
Tonight In Athens
Plan-It-X Fest rides into town today and begins at noon at
Tasty World (music's not till 5PM). Why should you care? Cause it's
Carrie Nations' farewell performance. That's it after tonight. One of the best punk bands in town ever calls it quits. Another good reason to care:
Madeline's come back to town for the show as well. So, go check it out. I think the live music lasts till 11, then there's a DJ. Or so says
this article.
But if you choose to stay your ass home tonight, then check out UPN at 10:30 (just after the news). It'll feature
Pylon,
The Whigs, and others in some some sorta Athens-centric broadcast apparently (or so CS read in
Hillary's site's
comments).

You gotta wonder why

Cruise: The New Jacko or The New Zell?

So, at first Tom Cruise's new escapes seemed more like a mid-life crisis. Then, with the repeated expressions of classic symptoms of "the crazies", I figured he was just another celeb with too much time and money and too many skeletons in the closet going the way of Michael Jackson. But now that I've finally seen
his bickering with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, I saw shades of
Zell on Hardball after his crazy-ass ranting lunatic speech during the Republican convention. You decide.

So apparently the
Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreation Industry have finally found a distribution deal for "that record" they've been talking about for so long. If the group's AthFest performance was any clue, it oughta be good. They're apparently involved in their record company's showcase at the
40 Watt in early September to promote its release - along with
Jack Logan & The Monday Night Recorders promoting Volume 2 of their work.
Atlanta BBQ
In an effort (again) to shamelessly promote my friends' "

AthFest Roundup by Desktop Publisher
When the cloud is lifted from the hold it has on my head, I may feel a bit differently but at the current moment, this is my retrospective look back on a weekend of fun and little sleep.
Friday night: Got to the fest just in time for
Jack Logan and the Monday Night Recorders. The music portion of the show was great, but the vocal knob was turned up way too high. Nonetheless, it is very rare that you get to see Jack Logan onstage with Kevin and Matt Lane, Rob Veal, William Tonks, John Neff, and Rob Keller.
On a totally irrelevant sidenote, I had my one and only visit to the beer tent during this time and the mosquitoes were everywhere in there. It only seemed to bother me in that tent so I never visited it again. And who needs to anyway, when you can enjoy the main stage from the Flicker just as well? In fact, thinking about it, the view from the bar was better as the soundmen blocked the view of the stage for all in the beer tent anyway. (Though it was in a better location this year than it was last year I suppose.)
Elf Power was next on the main stage and their set didn’t seem as energetic to me as it had in the past. Maybe partly because everything sounded a bit fuzzy to me, but overall, I’ve enjoyed them more in a club setting. I then caught
Nikki Sudden over on the side stage which was very good. The backing band did a fine job on supporting his songs and it definitely offered a different perspective than his solo set at the Caledonia last year. (Coincidentally, I found myself at almost all of the same sets he was at for the rest of the weekend which made me feel a bit like I was stalking him.)
The next time slot found me over at the
Caledonia for a long-awaited set by the David Barbe Band. It was on a pretty regular basis that these guys were playing last year, but this has not been the case as of lately so it was nice to see them get back on the horse. After debuting some new songs, they closed out the set with those familiar rockers that I love. It seemed to be slightly more mellow than usual with
John Neff’s leads being a bit more of the focus (over Frank's) this time around, but as usual, these guys never disappoint.
After some catching up with friends outside for awhile, the next thing I caught was
I Am The World Trade Center at the Caledonia. The club was pretty packed by this point, but I can’t say I could really figure out why. I did not stay for long. Maserati was next, but unfortunately, I can’t tell you how that set played out as they stopped letting folks in due to capacity.
Biggest regret of the night: Going home at this point, instead of going to catch
We Vs. The Shark at the
40 Watt which I heard was a great show (and whom I’ve still never seen.)
Saturday: After sleeping much of the day away and then realizing our fresh seafood from Mobile Bay was not going to cook in time, we decided to hightail it over to the fest just in time for the
Workhorses of the Entertainment & Recreational Industry. As usual, these guys cranked out catchy songs with great harmonies and solid playing. They were directly followed by
The Chasers over at the main stage where the honky-tonk did not fail to disappoint me. The Chasers are always a fun time. Since we had Red Fish half-cooked at home, we decided to swing by the house and finish cooking up a storm. It was VERY good (in case you wondering.) Made it back to the main stage for the last song of
Five-Eight and some of
The Whigs set. I really walked away with no solid opinion of them other than it being the second time I’ve seen them and they still have yet to impress me. I also had some friends ask the same question I had in my mind, "why was this band headlining"?
Next up was a visit to the air-conditioned 40 Watt which was certainly one of my favorite single moments of the weekend. AC: now that’s what it’s all about. After some downtime, I was able to catch bits and pieces of
Bo Freeze and
Mother Jackson. I walked over at that point to catch
Ceiling Fan and by the time I came back to the 40 Watt for the 2nd half of
Don Chambers and Goat, I was amazed by how much bigger the crowd had gotten in just 30 minutes.
But backing up, Ceiling Fan rocked the motherfudgin’ house as usual. It pained me to have to leave halfway through their set, but I wanted to make sure my friends caught some of Goat for the first time as well. So anyone that wants to fill me in on how the rest of CF’s set was, please do so. Ceiling Fan probably took the cake for my favorite set this year (they came in a close second behind
Southern Bitch last year). I walked into the 40 Watt in time to hear some new songs by Goat. While it was a welcome surprise to hear them play some newer songs after much of the same setlists throughout the year, it didn’t seem like those new songs had much of the trademark whiskey-soaked Goat sound. A little bit more rockin’ I guess. They did, however, close out the set with the familiar tunes and a pretty crowded house.
Southern Bitch and lots of whiskey (or wait, was it vodka?) closed out my night, and as usual, a rockin’ good time. Yeah, not the best Southern Bitch set by any means, but an average set by them is still more kickass than a lot of other things. They certainly gave me the rock needed to satisfy the part of me that needs a little heaping of loud rock once a day. A big happy birthday to Wendy Musick as well!
Biggest regret of Saturday night: Not having dinner ready in time and having to miss The Stand-Ins and Col. Knowledge over at the Caledonia. You can’t win ‘em all, I guess.
Overall, another fantastic AthFest weekend. If I had to compare, I’d say that I enjoyed the lineup and booking schedule more last year, but after awhile, it’s apples and oranges I guess. The small festival atmosphere, coupled with all the club lineups, really make AthFest a great place to be all weekend. One thing’s for sure, it beats the heck out of sitting at this desk until 5 o’clock!
Update: As expected, some things are slowly creeping back into my memory from the weekend. I had to add that I did get the chance to check out a portion of Geoff Reacher's set at the Lunch Paper on Friday night. This guy really has a cool one-man show going on and it was good to see him again. If you still have not seen this guy, make sure you do at some point (he has some dates coming up.)
Athfest Roundup by Computer Support
So... the good folks at Athfest were kind enough to give us TDJ'ers some press passes. So, now I feel like I oughta give an account of the weekend...
Friday night - Started off by seeing Elf Power on the main outdoor stage. The mix was pretty bad... the vocals were jacked up wayyyyy too high. It was fun seeing BP Helium playing bass with the band again, but I couldn't enjoy the set due to the shoddy sound. Seems like Elf Power is one of those bands who have played their songs too many times. The members didn't seem to have a lot of interest in the performance. Next I headed over to the 2nd stage to catch Nikki Sudden play a fun, loosey-goosey set. Man, he was dressed for success... TDJ regular Pedro plays lead guitar for Nikki, and did a great job. Riffed it up, riffy.
Then Pylon took the main stage. They passed out
Pylon balloons w/ pictures of butt plugs on 'em. It was quite a sight. The mixing issues continued throughout the first half of their set, but seemed to straighten out toward the middle. Once the kinks got worked out it was a great show. Lots of dancing. The butt plug balloons blocked my view for most of the set though.
After Pylon finished, I headed over to the Go Bar for Phosphorescent. It was extremely packed... so much so that enjoying the show was near impossible. Lots of voice cracks... met Boo... nice guy. I then headed over to Little Kings w/ Mail Clerk and caught a little bit of Bob Hay and the Jolly Beggars. Bluegrass and a comfy seat was a nice escape from the stuffy Go Bar. Made my way to the 40 Watt to catch Psychic Hearts.... eh.... There was alot of hype surrounding them in the past year, but I just didn't enjoy 'em. Finally, I went over to the Caledonia and couldn't figure out what was going on. The club was packed watching a boy and a girl hog the karaoke mic... where was the band? Oh wait... that was the band... eh... Decided to head on home.
Saturday - Started out w/ the Stand Ins at the Caledonia.... nice. This was as good as I've seen them play. Last song featured Robo-Dave on backing falsetto vocals. I got to meet Aaron (the bassist for Col. Knowledge and the Lickety Splits) at
Popperfest, so I had to stick around for their set. Glad I did, those guys were fantastic. Great soulsy psych-pop... Watched just a tad of the Whigs outdoors. The main stage was still having sound issues. One thing about the Whigs, the singer is always a little flat. That's excusable at places like the Caledonia, but not on the main stage w/ a full row of vocal monitors.
(Tangent: The person running the outdoor main stage's soundboard must have also been choosing the transition music... the two annoyances would then explain each other)
Dashed over to Nuci's Space to watch Nutria play a great set of pop. Metronome was particularly well played tonight. Next I caught Heros Severum at Tasty World. This was the first time I'd seen them play as a 4-piece (they've added keys). Man, do they sound better now... Great set. Hopped back across town to the Caledonia (several TDJ'ers were at the 'donia including Mail Clerk, Pedro, Hillary, Jared, Robo-Dave, Jayne, and myself... it was another meet up). Caught the end of Murder Beach's set. Lots of fun... pretty girls in that band... Ceiling Fan took the stage and rocked the house boat. Funny story... during the song "Burnt Sienna" Robo-Dave leaned over and asked me if they were saying "Pussy Head" in the chorus. Only Robo-Dave would think that.
Finished the night with some dirty rock from Don Chambers and Goat. It was really mixed at a low volume, but sounded great. Don Chambers is definitely one of the highlights of the current music scene. The headliners, Southern Bitch, took the stage about 30 minutes later than scheduled. They were a little rough and one could tell they'd hadn't been playing many shows recently... I started giving out around 2 AM, so I took off before they finished.
So... Since I'm moving away in a couple weeks, this was my 8th and last Athfest... It was a weekend full of heat, snappy door men, ringing ears, smoke, and great music.
AthFest Roundup by Mail Clerk
So,
AthFest '05... where to begin... How 'bout at the beginning?
THURS: Flagpole awards were pretty good. Didn't start on time (as usual), but so be it. Dragged in a few places, but overall the winners were more credible and the performers were on par or above expectations.
Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars were particularly great. Great music videos and a
hilarious short by the
Flick Skinny guys that centered around Hulk Hogan.
Afterwards, Popperfest was a rousing success. Met a few musicians I like who like our site, met a few writers I like who like our site, and heard an amazing performance by
Nutria (in their new lineup). I love all types of music, but catchy t-shirt-n-jeans type rock n' roll is probably my favorite - and the Nutria guys have that down pat.
FRI: We Versus The Shark ruled the night. They kicked total but with a whole buncha' new tunes. They might be a little less "math + disco rock" and a little more just "rock", but it was right on for that time of night. I think the crowd agreed.
Before them, ContraBand was quite impressive. It involves the members of
Cinemechanica performing the music to the videogame Contra as two other dudes (in full costume) play the game live on screen - all the way through. Sounds pretentious as hell, I know, but it's really cool to see.
Pylon shook off the rust off a shakey first half of their set to end up performing a great second-half. And they really saved their best songs to play all in a row at the end, and it was awesome. The balloons looked cool too - and I recognized the traffic cone shape!
SAT: Okay, think of some great CD's to play in between bands on the outdoor stage. Have a few in mind? Great - anyone think "311 would be awesome!"? No? Me neither.
Moving on, after a fun set by the always-great
Chasers,
the Stand-Ins, and
Col. Knowledge & The Lickity-Splits made a great start to the evening. It was my first time seeing the Colonel and his ground and they didn't disappoint. I used to work with their singer - who'da thought he had a voice like that?!?
I was also really impressed as well with
Heros Severum's new lineup. They sounded awesome, and I've never really been into them before. It's also the best I've ever heard upstairs at
Tasty World sound (if they can make that place sound good - how come the outdoor stage can't?).
But the best show of the night was
Ceiling Fan. Man, they rule. I felt really privileged to get to see them play a great set as it's "not their last, but close to it" according to them. Worth all the effort I put into arranging my entire night around it (missed
Venice Is Sinking, who I was really looking forward to seeing again).
Afterwards,
Don Chambers and Goat also shook off the rust of a shakey start to play a great second-half set. And the night ended with a birthday celebration for
Southern Bitch's Wendy Musick.
Thanks to AthFest for another fun year. Thanks also to Jeff Montgomery and Chris Hassiotis for making it all possible.
Now, what'd y'all like? Send pics if you got 'em.

In latest AthFest news, it seems that "Bill Mallonee is going to be playing a set at Hot Corner tomorrow at 10 p.m" according to

But really, what better way to go into the weekend than
on this note.
Tales from the REAL O.C. - Once, Twice, Three Times Excommunicated
As some of you may have noted after meeting me last night, I have a limited amount of patience and an overwhelming amount of angst. This is a volatile combination...and believe it or not, I've mellowed as I've aged. So today, in order to prepare any of you that dare be seen with me in public again for what might happen in my company, I will share with you the top 3 stories of organizations/places that I've been kicked out of/asked to leave.
1. The Baptist Faith - I didn't like church as a kid. I had to dress up, wake up early, and listen to old people talk about my chubby cheeks. Sunday school sucked, as the only kid in my class who would talk to me who didn't eat paste or boogers was my friend Clay. One day we were sitting outside in the parking lot and building rock castles with the lot's gravel, and Clay reached over and flicked my castle and it crumbled to the ground. But I was cool. I waited until he got up to go inside, and I threw a handful of gravel and hit him right in the chest. He went down screaming like a big ole puss. Our pastor saw the whole thing and came running over and yanked me up by the arm calling me a hellion spawn or something. Normally, I would have been scared, but I was still pissed about my castle, because it rocked! (HA!) So I bit the pastor's hand. Hard. And drew blood (by this time I had already kicked the nun, so my Mom knew I was probably on the list for the whole eternal damnation thing). My mom didn't say a word, she just put me and my brother in the car and we never went back. About 18 years later, he presided over my grandmother's graveside service. I walked up to him after the service to thank him, and I offered my hand to him for a handshake but he left me hanging and walked off mumbling "Hell no, she bites!"
2. Brownies - Yeah, I never made it to girl scouts because I was thrown out of Brownies. I don't think it was my fault though, I think I was set up by the international Baptist conspiracy. My best friend's (okay, my ONLY friend's) mom was the troop leader, and being a bible thumper herself she wasn't so pleased that I wasn't welcome in the Baptist church anymore, she assumed I would be a bad influence on her child because of my heathen ways. But yet she still insisted I join Brownies. I did it because I didn't have anything else better to do. One night this snot-faced, weasel eyed girl was picking on my best friend, and pushed her down on the ground and made my best friend cry. I saw red! So, I walked up to weasel face and I punched her dead in the snout. POW! She went down crying like a bitch too. The international Baptists conspiracy sprang into action, and the den moms told my mom that if I couldn't play well with others, I couldn't be a part of Brownies. My mom shuttled me into the car and broke the news to me on the way home. My response: "Mom, ask me if I really give a shit."
3. Picadilly Cafeteria - This one totally wasn't my fault. Before Cracker Barrel existed here in Athens, my parents favored the Picadilly for family meals. Taking my father in public to eat is scary and disgusting. His choice in food is strange, as having been a lifelong smoker I don't believe he has taste buds left, and a little known fact about my father is he has false teeth. Dentures, if you will. So he likes things mushy with lots of salt. He salts to texture, not to taste. He also has horrific table manners and yells at the waitresses because he's deaf in one ear. But he never tells them he's deaf so they think they have this crazy-eyed, salt suckin, gun totin maniac yelling at them for no reason. One night, after I made the mistake of agreeing to have dinner with the 'rents during my freshman year in college (you know you're broke when your Dad calls you up and says "Dinner at Picadilly - my treat!" and you agree to it), my father discovered his country fried steak wasn't up to his rigorous standards and brought the oversight to the attention of our waitress, who told my dad "well, honey, you should have told me you wanted it cooked like that when you ordered" Big mistake. He continued to argue with her about how he desired a mushy consistency to his food, until I he finally reached the breaking point. He shoveled about 4 forkfuls of steak into his mouth, chewed them up, spit them out on his tray, looked at the waitress and (God help me) sang "That's the way, uh huh, uh huh, I LIKE IT!!!" However, even that didn't really seem to bother the waitress, but then Dad called her a cock-eyed fat heifer. That did it. The manager was summoned and we were asked to leave. I almost wanted Dad to make a last stand just so I could see the apocalyptic showdown between my father and the mall rent-a-cops. The bright side is at least I never had to eat at the Picadilly again.
Popperfest
Popperfest was fun... got a chance to meet TDJ'ers I've never met (Hillary, Pedro, Hassi), catch up with TDJ'ers I haven't seen in a while (Desktop Publisher, Dan Matthews, Printmaker, Robo-Dave), and hang out with TDJ'ers I see
all the damned time (Mail Clerk and Legal Bitch). Everyone was super nice, and it wasn't as awkward as I thought it might be...
Oh, and
Nutria kicked ass.

(Photo taken by Dan Matthews - I'll let you guess who's who)
See ya'll at Athfest this weekend...
Dischord Records and Nike?
It seems Nike might be running out of advertisement ideas, or at the very least,
pissing people off with the ideas they choose to use.

FYI: Blogger has begun putting some extra code in our posts... which is causing the site to look strange. I'll try to fix it when I get a chance today.
Burning American Flags
The U.S. House of Representatives (
including our own John Barrow) recently passed an ammendment to the Constitution that bans flag burning. Now, everyone I know is upset about the violation of their right to free speech... but
they don't really understand the effects of flag burning.

Word On The Street (Pulaski Street)
According to frontman Clay Leverette, the debut album from The Chasers is pressed and on its way back to town. It'll be titled simply
Volume 1. Now with this camp I tend to take a "believe it when you see it" stance, but he sounds fairly confident they'll have copies in their hands next week. Don't know when they'll be for sale, but I hope soon after. Really, if you like country keep a lookout for this album.
This Weekend In Athens

As if I had to say it, it's
AthFest time. Rather than try and pick out the 100 shows I'm gonna try and see and post 'em here, I'll just point y'all in the direction of the info...
-
Outdoor Stages-
Clubs-
Performers ListIf you're not there, you're missing out. Oh, and don't forget, according to John Neff (supposedly), the David Barbe show is actually at 9PM tonight at the Caledonia - not 8PM as listed. And of course, you should check the Athfest site for the real 40 Watt schedule.
Also, it appears that
Brown Frown is playing on Sunday night as sort of an AthFest after-party. Dunno many details, but it's got a lotta bands (Music Hates You, Polemic, etc.) and starts mid-afternoon-ish, going well into the night. The Frown plays "third to last" supposedly. I've never been there, but they say you take North Ave over the loop and then take a left at the Huddle House. Then, take your first right. Don't know the address from there, but I guess you'll be able to see it.
Oh, and I heard about a Barn party Friday night. Don't know anything other than Electa-Villain's playing. I'd do more research, but I'm damn tired and want to go to bed.
Have fun, y'all. I know I will.
Nuthin' But Neff

Robo-Dave and Desktop Publisher collaborated on this doctoring of
John Neff's photo in this week's Flagpole.
Robo-Dave says the following, "In light of the recent "all about neff" response from the female population, Robo dave has decided to cash in on the association and start up the NUTHIN BUT NEFF fan club. Female members only. Each Neff show we will where our NUTHIN BUT NEFF t-shirts, stand right in front of the stage, and gaze into his dreamy eyes as he puts his petal to his metal. Send names/numbers to fans@neffrules.shizz".

Tonight In Athens
Okay, so here we go... the start of AthFest...First off, there's the
Flagpole Awards and despite Sloan being snubbed on strongest supporter of the scene, this year's awards are shaping up to be the best in a long while - at least, by the list of 'finalists'. Performers include
Hope For Agoldensummer,
Iron Hero, and
Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars. Doors open at 7:30, show starts promptly at 8:00.
More here (where else?).
Afterwards (and for an hour or so coinciding with the awards show) there's
TDJ's first official meet-up at the
Caledonia for the
Nutria show. We'll all be there at some point and of course the music'll be great. Plus, Robo's bringing his patented "Robo-Poppers" to snack on before the show. There might be a pre-show meet-up as well. But I'll let y'all sort it out in the comments and maybe another TDJer'll post it later.
Now, if you're anti-social and/or don't like pop music, there are also other great options...For example, there's
Patterson Hood &
Don Chambers' show at
Flicker immediately following the awards as well. It'll likely sell out, so get there early.
There's also the official post-awards show /
AthFest CD Release party at the
40 Watt.
Love Tractor will be playing as well as
Count Kellam and
Coulier, and you can get a copy of the AthFest CD for $5, supposedly. More on Love Tractor
here.
Speaking of the 40 Watt - if you're a "Type A", and you're already planning out your Friday night schedule for AthFest, please be aware that the performance schedule has undergone last-minute changes. I think the only place they're reflected right now is on
the AthFest website's club schedule. Just FYI.
Finally, if you're in the ATL and don't feel like driving anywhere tonight, Gordon's got the scoop on Jucifer playing. Read more about it in this week's
Threats & Promises.
...but really, come hang out if you can. We aren't cool either.UPDATE: Sorry, Jucifer's next week. So, it's all good after all. Sometimes I don't read so good.
Tonight In Athens
A little quiet on this
AthFest eve. However, you can catch
Astra over at the
Watt or of course, as there is every wednesday, plenty o' dancing at the Go Bar courtesy of
DJ Twin Powers. Depends on your mood, I s'pose. And your inclination or lack thereof towards dancing.
UPDATE: Oh man, how could I forget the Sprockets Music Video Showcase?!? Sorry, y'all. Anyway, it's tonight at the 40 Watt as well and you should totally go see it. Starts at 10PM. Read more at
Film::Athens' website (Why isn't that on our sidebar? We'll have to render that!)
Sticky Sugar Pop Substance
I'm not sure what to say about
this, other than it's very funny.
Athens Audio
In the latest installment of Sloan Simpson's audio downloads, you can check out
Bloodkin's show from
6/17/05 at the Georgia Theatre. (Note: Because this show is available for download on archive.org, you may also stream or download mp3s as an alternative to downloading FLAC files.) Sloan has sent along his
pictures from the night for all to view as well. Guests include William Tonks on dobro, Todd McBride and Anna Broach on vocals and Eric Martinez (Colorado) on guitar.
Nikki Sudden's Friday Night Lineup
Athensmusic.com says, "...former Star Room Boy guitarist Phillip McArdle will be in the mix when Nikki Sudden takes the stage Friday night after Elf Power and before Pylon. The source also says that Johnny Neff will be part of future Nikki Sudden installments..."
WTF Pedro? Where's our scoop?

If you were a fan of the band Smashing Pumpkins out of Chicago, who officially broke up in 2000, you might be interested in this ad that frontman
Billy Corgan took out in today's
Chicago Tribune. (The article includes the ad in PDF format.) The band WILL get back together and apparently Billy has kept it a secret for a year. Guess it was a good day to make the announcement since today also marks the release of his new solo album "TheFutureEmbrace."

Audio and Photo Blogs
Is anyone interested in becoming TDJ
audio and/or
photo bloggers? As you can probably tell, the current pages are pretty stagnant these days... I reckon the current audio/photo bloggers just don't have time any more. So, we'd like to get some new blood in there if anyone is interested.
If we can't find someone, I'll probably take those sections off the site.
However, I don't wanna do that because they were a cool addition to our site when they were being updated.
If you're interested,
e-mail us.
Wet Cruise
As many of you have probably already heard, Tom Cruise's face has not only been wet with constant tears of love and joy... but also with the
tears of a 'jerk'. (Don't forget to watch the actual video!)

Tonight In Athens
Iron Hero plays at
Tasty World. Sounds like a good mid-week show. Those guys can carry a beat pretty well and are plenty-catchy. Definitely worth a look-see if you haven't seen 'em yet.
Monday Morning Sound-Off
I'm not in the office for the next two weeks, but I'm still gonna try and keep up with things. Anyway, let's hear what everyone's been up to in the last week or so... (post in the comments below)
Holy Mother of God

So I figured this deserved a blog of its own since it is such big news. Don Chambers finally has a
website! It's good they finally caught on to the Internets thing.
Tales from the REAL O.C. - I'm Going Straight to Hell
I kicked a nun in the face once just to watch her bleed. I was 5 years old.
Actually, it was an accident. Or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. It goes a little something like this...
Christmas Eve, 1981. I had been feeling bad all day and told my parents that my back and my tummy hurt and I felt hot. My mom put her hand on my head and said, "Yeah, you feel a little warm" and left it at that. She had bigger problems, as my dad's best friend was visiting. We called him "Uncle ______" and for the sake of anonymity, we'll call him "Uncle L" here (I think it's always creepy when you call a grown man "Uncle" and you're aren't truly related to him). He was batshit crazy just like my dad. He was in the FBI, single and in his late 30s, lived with his mother, and raised rabbits and bulldogs in his spare time. Creepy. And he was a survivalist freak, which means that instead of getting books or a toy as a present, we got throwing stars and pellet guns. At least my crazy ass Dad would buy me a Barbie. (I'll give you guys some Uncle L installments in the future, including the one where he trained me to collapse a man's trachea with one punch - I'm deadly, bitches!).
So we go about our Christmas Eve business, and I felt worse and worse. Finally, my mom took my temperature, and it was almost 103. My dad suggested giving me Tylenol, but Uncle L said "To hell with that - I'm taking her to the emergency room" and loaded me up into the car (without either one of my true legal guardians with us) and took off to the local hospital (mom and dad pulled their shit together shortly and followed us there). Being that it was Christmas Eve, and this was St. Mary's and it was 1981, there were plenty of nuns around in full nun gear. I had never seen a nun before (we were southern baptist until I got us kicked out of the church about a year or two later), so as I was lying in the emergency room bay, delirious from fever and infection, and when the nun came to take my temperature and blood pressure in her big Flying Nun costume, I totally freaked. The moment she got near me, I reared my leg back off the table and kicked her square in the chin. I remember hearing the distinctive click of her teeth slamming together in her mouth, and the tiny trickle of blood that came spurting out of her split lip. She walked off and refused to touch me again (not very Christian of her if you ask me). Some gnarly looking orderly had to come over and get me under control to get my vitals. Turns out I had a kidney infection, and rang in Christmas in the hospital.
My mother was horrified by the whole fiasco. I kicked a nun! In the face! She was hysterical when she related the story to my grandmother, who took my side (I guess) by saying "Well, I guess it was an accident, being as she was delirious from fever and all. But do you think she'll go to hell for making a nun bleed?"
This Weekend In Athens
When bartenders hit the stage...
FRI: Bloodkin plays the
Georgia Theatre for the first time in a while. It's a CD release party for them as well. Not sure the line-up or any details, but I'm sure Desktop Publisher'll fill us in through the comments.
Also, if you're drunk enough there's dancing at the
40 Watt with
DJ Twin Powers and the
Krush Girls. Actually, if you're into that, since the college kids are mostly gone it might not be a bad time to get hit the dance floor with a vengeance.
Also, of course there's
Redneck GReece over at
Jot 'Em Down. Funny country, good BBQ, cash only, 7 PM-ish.
SAT: Starting at about 2PM, the
Blind Pig Tavern (a favorite among TDJers, it seems) is throwing its "3rd Annual 5th Anniversary Celebration" (you do the math). They've got several bands playing all afternoon and into the evening. One of them is
Todd McBride and the Cooler Heads, who are really friggin' great. More on them
here.
This is actually one of the best-kept secrets in Athens cause (in years past, at least) they have LOTS of free food they're cooking up outdoors. You just pay for drinks and stand around like a buzzard with your paper plate in hand near a grill waiting for something awesome to be ready to eat. Then, I recommend you go douse it in BBQ sauce cause theirs is different but really good. Last year had chicken, burgers, pig, and oysters - to name a few. Yum.
(Not recommended for vegetarians - though they do have some what I've been told are good veggie dishes you can order and pay for inside.)Later that night, you can take your drunk ass over to the
40 Watt to see
Still Small Voice & The Joyful Noise open up for
Lona. Great double-bill. Perfect for a drinking day/night.
OR if you've got the brass cajones, you can go over the
Caledonia and join
Knight Seeker for a night of heavy metal karaoke. It is awesome to see someone attempt Iron Maiden songs in their best drunken falsetto. Awesome. Actually, all-in-all, it's a pretty good weekend for rock n' roll, eating, and drinking. And it's not even
AthFest yet.
TDJ + Nutria Show = Fun (or Awkward)
I don't know if I'm supposed to announce this because I think most of the other bloggers here aren't even aware of it, but since it's a week off (and even though I swore I'd never do this) here goes...Legal Bitch has been on about a
TDJ public meet-up. Why? We don't know. But CS and I decided that since everyone seems to like
Nutria, we'd use their show next week (Thursday the 23rd after the
Flagpole Awards at the
Caledonia) as that opportunity. Plus, given that it'll likely be CS's last time in public before he moves next month (he's a shut-in), it's really the last time we can do this.
So, if you're dying to add more nerds to your list of real-life friends and cohorts, then clear your calendar for that night. Details are obviously sketchy right now. Likely there'll be some pre-show drinking at
Room 13 or something, but we'll clear all that up later (as well as how to actually identify us apart from the other townies and dorks around... probably).
And since we're on the subject, everyone should go check out
Nutria's new website (which was designed by
Karate Media). If you've never heard 'em, they're pretty great. That
song "Anita" is one of the catchiest things I've heard in a long time.
Anyway, we'll see some of y'all there maybe...
That Crazy-Ass Bird Lady
Here's an article on a few of crazy folks who waited outside the Jacko trial ... including the weird lady who released all those doves.

Poo Mountain
We're all having a good laugh this morning over this morning's top stories on
CNN.com. Check 'em out:

Yup, that's right,
'virus-laden poo'. It's even funnier
juxtaposed with the picture and other tragic news that surrounded it earlier.
(Thanks to Sarah for the idea and full screen capture. CS did the stories capture.)
Vic on NPR
See that?
Vic...
He and I are on a first-name basis. I see him at the Grit and I'm all like, "What's up Vic?"... and he's all like, "Not much Computer." We're buds.
Anyways, the reason I'm writing this is to say that Vic is gonna be on
Mountain Stage this weekend. It airs Saturday @ 2 PM on
WUGA.

Phelps Adds War Dead to Funerals to Protest
The quite literally insane and very possibly treasonous Fred Phelps is
now protesting military funerals around the country, in addition to gay people killed from hate crimes or AIDS. Tomorrow he'll be picketing the memorial for a National Guard soldier killed in Iraq. He claims that God killed the soldier with an improvised explosive devise as revenge against a bombing at Phelps' church six years ago.
So, not only did his god have to resort to an improvised explosive device, he had to wait six years to do it. Brilliant. [via

A new poll shows that almost the same number of people consider Rush Limbaugh a journalist (27%) as the number that consider Bob Woodward a journalist (30%). Perhaps even more disturbing, 40% consider Bill O'reilly a journalist...

Tonight On Your TV
For fans of

Haven't done this in a while, but I'm gonna try and make a point of posting this stuff more often... Anyway, Sloan's put up Patterson's show from Flicker on Monday. You can

Teen Queen News
Here's some news on 2 teen queens:

Crazy eBay Mom
Take
a tour of this "crazy eBay mom's" house. She's addicted to junk...
Since I'm currently in the process of preparing to move across country, one of the rooms in my house looks alot like a few of these pictures. It's scary stuff.
Rock(in) Art Show

When
I mentioned the art show opening this weekend at the
Lyndon House, I didn't realize exactly what it was. Now that I've been, I'd like to tell all y'all you definitely need to go see this.
Not only do you get the aforementioned works by
Michael Lachowski (of
Pylon), but you also get a huge display upstairs of rock cover art and, what is in my mind a definite highlight of the exhibit, the works of
Sunny Taylor. Whoever said it before was right: the online pictures do not do theses paintings justice. You have to go see them. For those not familiar,
here's our interview with Sunny from several months ago. Take my word, go see this exhibit.
Tonight In Athens
Patterson Hood, fresh off the road, is playing a coupla' shows at
Flicker in the coming weeks to start promoting his forthcoming album,
Murdering Oscar and Other Love Songs. Show starts at 11PM. No word on other acts, but I'm fairly sure the usual suspects'll be around. And you can bet the show'll sell out, so get there early if you want to see it.
Monday Morning Sound-Off
Morning, y'all. Let's hear what everyone did this last week that was worth talking about. This way we can all do that this week and ruin it for the rest of everyone. Rock. (Post in the comments below.)
How To Lose Friends and Alienate People With E-Mail
The title says it all...
My personal fave is:
"Request receipts on every email – It says you care. It also says, 'I’m getting proof that you got this, you lying bastard.'" (I'm lookin' straight at you LB!)
Pylon Show(s)
If you didn't see it
in Flagpole this week,
Pylon will be playing
The Earl (in Atlanta) on July 7th. That would definitely be a cool place to see them. Also, if you're in the ATL, tomorrow night
Phosphorescent releases their CD at the same venue. I think
Liz Durrett opens as well. So, that's a cool lineup.
Finally, please check out the update to
This Weekend In Athens for some other Pylon-related news. Rock on and have a great weekend, y'all!

Tales from the REAL O.C. - Rabies!
All kids love animals, and I was no exception. Much to my parents chagrin, when I was around 8 years old, I took to the habit of feeding stray cats at our back steps. I would save some of my allowance and walk down the road to the local convenience store to buy cat food for my feline friends. I didn't have too many human ones back then. I had 3 regular kitties, a gray tabby named Tyrone, a calico named Sugar, and a mangy ass brown cat named Turd (and sometimes 'Tard, as he wasn't a very bright animal). I'd feed them, pet them a little, and go about my business. My dad objected to this new habit of mine, as he said "With all these damn cats running around our house the neighbors might start thinking we're weird or something." Like nothing else in our household would ever give them that idea...
So everything was fine until one day, this pretty, fluffy orange kitty came to eat with the others. It seemed perfectly nice, and allowed me to pet it gently for a few seconds before it went snout down in the food bowl. He finished eating, turned around, and ferociously bit down into my right arm, biting and scratching the living crap out of me. I kicked the cat off me and ran into my house, arm bleeding from 4 big puncture wounds and several scratches. My mom freaked, and off to the hospital we went.
Since it was a "wild animal" attack, the emergency room technician told us we had something like 2 weeks to find the wild animal before I would have to be vaccinated for rabies. He also gave me a graphic description of how the virus would travel to my brain, eventually affecting my nerve centers and traveling to my salivary gland, causing me to foam at the mouth, go crazy and eventually go into a coma and die. Rock on!
So for the next week we drove to almost every house in the area looking for this cat. My brother would torment me by running around the house with toothpaste foam around his mouth and convulsing wildly on the floor, or hissing at me like a cat every time I'd round a corner. I told him I'd bite his ass first when I turned rabid. Unfortunately for me, we did not find the animal.
Back in 1984 when this occurred, medical science in the rabies field wasn't very advanced. The rabies vaccination involved sticking me in the muscle of my stomach with several long, pointy needles. And it's not just one shot. It's a series of several shots over the course of a week. I had never experienced pain like this (it was much worse that the golf club in the eye a few years earlier). Getting rabies had to have been less painful that the antidote for it. Worse yet, people were still watching me like a hawk to see if I was going to start foaming at the mouth or stop taking showers (rabies causes hydrophobia). I missed a bunch of school and kids avoided me like the plague. Children are cruel and duplicitous. Hell, at least cats are honest about trying to mess you up and do it outright.
The epligoue is that about a month later, when I was out trick or treating with my mom, we found that damn cat. It belonged to someone who lived about 8 miles down Hwy 78 from our house. How the hell it got to my house I'll never know (and how we missed it on our exhaustive search beats me). I screamed, pelted the cat with candy corn and ran to the car for safety. I still have 2 round white scars from it's teeth on the inside of my right arm, and a nice long scar going down the side of my right hand. That's why you can't trust cats - they'll fuck you up! (and perhaps give you rabies).
The 90's are already Retro...
Rhino Records plans to release a new box set on July 26th called
Whatever: The 90's Pop Culture Box. Seven discs of music, and not one song by Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Britney Spears. What gives??
I'm lazy, so I won't list all 7 discs worth of tracks.
Clicky here to read more...
This Weekend In Athens
Kinda quiet weekend. A bit of good stuff scattered here and there...
FRI: Audition with Max Reinhardt will play
Flicker at 8:30 PM. It's your third-to-last chance to see this German Cabaret act if you never have before Sanni heads back to Germany indefinitely, supposedly.
There's also some math rock (
Cinemechanica) at the
Caledonia, some hip-hop (
Minamina Goodsong) at
Tasty World, and as always the good-ole' country/comedy of
Redneck GReece up at
Jot 'Em Down BBQ. Tried it out last week. Not a lot of room in there, but the music's entertaining (read: funny - make him play "Louise"), and the food's great. Gets started right around seven, usually. Food stops serving at eight, though. Cash only.
SAT: I haven't heard
Lake City, but I heard tale they're pretty good. If you like alt-country-ish stuff, then their show at
Tasty World's probably a good bet for the evening.
Also, there's Jonathan Richman playing two sets at the
40 Watt. You remember
There's Something About Mary, right? Anyway, more
here and
here on that.
UPDATE: I totally forgot that
Michael Lachowski (of
Pylon) has an art exhibit opening tomorrow at the
Lyndon House. The opening reception is from 6-8 PM tomorrow. Highly recommended.
Also, fans of Jonathan Richman should know that he has an in-store performance scheduled for 6PM at
School Kids Records. However, I cannot remember if that's tonight or tomorrow night, so you'll wanna call and check if you're interested.
Caliente: East Side (kinda)
Hillary sent this over:"Okay, so
this is Bruno's new project for the East Side, but he's going
to have to pass some zoning hoo-ha. Please, East Side people, take the
survey and show your support. Imagine not having to drive across town
for this stuff."
And if the TDJer's can agree on anything, it's that we're Caliente Cab / Pollo Loco fans, so this is good news. Let's just hope he gets the name right the first time this go-round. Thanks, Hillary!
Of NPR
Thanks to Dan for passing along this link for a
new NPR page about Of Montreal. Some great national press for them and well-deserved for that album, I'd say.

Upcoming Athens Release
In local release news,
Bloodkin has announced that their new album "Last Night Out" will be released on June 14. It's been 3 years since their last release "Ravin' Beauties" came out (with the exception of the beautiful Daniel Hutchens solo album "Lesser" which was released in 2003.) Anyone familiar with Bloodkin's work knows that they can put out some really fantastic studio albums, along with some of the best songwriting this town has seen. This particular album, produced yet again by
David Barbe, includes qu
