Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 8:14 AM | Permanent Link
David Barbe & The Quick Hooks finish up their month-o-Mondays stint at the Caledonia. If you haven't checked one of 'em out, tonight's a good night for it - being your last opportunity until spring. Later, for Halloween dancing, DJ Cut-A-Rug & The Big Nastee will be spinning tunes inside if you wanna get your groove on (and you're over 24).

This Weekend In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:55 PM | Permanent Link
Better late than never...
FRI:Jucifer bring their loud and scary act to the Georgia Theatre just in time for Halloween. There's a wall of amps, y'all. It's something to see. More here.
Of course, there's also Murder Beach and Shiitake Knights at the Caledonia. That's a little less loud and a little more catchy. Either way, you're guaranteed a good show.
SAT: During the afternoon (starting at about 3), Jot 'Em Down BBQ is hosting its "Fest-O-Fall of Cholesterol" - and outdoor concert extravaganza featuring the likes of The Chasers, Redneck Greece Deluxe, and a whole buncha others.
That evening, let the covers begin at the Caledonia with the somewhat off-beat cover project Throwing Stars, which is Kevin Lane's Zumpano cover band. Afterwards, The Shut-Ups will be taking you through all the hits. More here.
There's also the Halloween drunken debauchery tradition of the Krush Girls at the 40 Watt, if you wanna get your groove on (and you're under 24).
SUN: The UltraOdd hosts its annual Halloween party. Garbage Island, Brown Frown, and a host of usual suspects will play. I have no idea the time, but you know, "rock time". Take College Ave away from downtown, left at MLK, 2nd house on the right (behind the big fence).
Tales from the REAL O.C. - Happy Halloween - posted by Legal Bitch @ 10:10 AM | Permanent Link
I've been kicked out of and/or banned from a lot of places. The first in that long list is the Oconee County library.
It was October 1981. My parents had entered me and my brother in a Halloween costume contest at the library. My brother decided he wanted to one of the Three Musketeers, which I told him was pretty dumb since he was missing the two other Musketeers. He made his costume out of a garbage bag, an old belt, and a cowboy hat he spray-painted black and taped up on one side with feathers he pulled off a dead bluejay in our backyard glued together to create a plume. My mother had made me a costume - I was Little Miss Muffet. I had a pretty blue dress and a bonnet, and a pillow on a string that had a toy spider glued on it (what the hell is a "tuffet" anyway?), and I carried a bowl and spoon (for curds and whey I suppose).
My parents forgot to tell me that we'd have to walk across the stage and be judged in our costumes. It was a contest after all. I was painfully shy as a child (which I eventually grew out of) and don't like to be touched by strangers (which I have yet to outgrow). When the librarian, I'll call her Miss B, grabbed me by the hand and tried to drag me onto the stage, squealing "but you're so PRECIOUS, honey!" I totally freaked out and kicked her, HARD, in the shin. By the other accounts I've gathered, Miss B was actually a wonderful lady, but my actions that day turned her into my lifelong enemy. I was excused from the contest and my parents were asked to take me home, and my registrations for the summer reading program for the next 3 years were mysteriously lost.
But Miss B's vendetta against me did not end there. Over the years, it played out like this: (1) Miss B chastised me for checking out V.C. Andrews books. She'd whisper loudly enough so half the library could hear... "well now, why would you want to check out this dirty book...don't you know it's about incest?? do you find incest interesting?" (2) Miss B chastised me for checking out Clue the Movie and Grease twice - "If you have this out all the time why don't you buy your own copy? No one else will ever get to watch these if you keep this up!" (3) She kicked me out of the library when I was in high school for "making out" with my boyfriend (he kissed me on the cheek), and the one that pissed me off the most is (4) I was a high school band geek. Anyone who was a high school band geek remembers being forced to sell bizarre shit for your band booster fundraisers. One year we had to sell summer sausage and cheese balls. Who the hell is gonna buy that (other than my relatives, who were obligated by our blood bond to support me)? So I hit the library to see if anyone would be interested...and Miss B, upon seeing me with my fundraiser booklet in hand, immediately posted a NO SOLICITING sign at the checkout counter. I walked up to her and asked "So when the hell do you plan to retire already?" Although she was an ancient beast all the way back in 1981 when our saga started, she waited until I graduated high school to retire, probably just to spite me, and to make sure I never, ever made it back into the summer reading program. So the lesson here is that you shouldn't kick old ladies, because they never forgive and forget. Happy Halloween!

Random Conversation Topic: Childhood Crushes - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
I was watching the Goonies the other day. I was very bored. So bored that I watched the entirety (both parts) of the theme song's music video. And who should appear in the middle of the music video? None other than my childhood crush: Susanna Hoffs.
So, that made me think it'd be fun to ask all y'all to name a childhood crush (anywhere from when you were born to high school). Drop a line in the comments if you feel like joining the conversation. Include any and all appropriate work-safe links if you feel like it (NSFW if you're nasty).

Phosphorescent returns from the road and tonight opens for Elf Power at the Georgia Theatre. That's a fantastic double bill. I usually love when a band returns from tour cause most of the time, they're on top of their game at that point. Little early to break out costumes, but a good precursor to the weekend nonetheless.

Europe Loves Us - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:24 PM | Permanent Link
So, TDJ's become big in Europe, as hundreds of Europeans have been visiting us lately. I think it mainly has to do with the Irish Mental Health Hotline post that CS put up a while back. Flock - A Browser for all the Nerds Out There - posted by Computer Support @ 1:32 AM | Permanent Link
Flock is a new browser that was created "to build tools that empower people and smooth out some of the more hairy parts of living and working online." In short, it's made less for web browsing than web participating. The software integrates browsing with tools such as blogging, social bookmarking, photo sharing, etc.
For example, to create this post, I highlighted some text, clicked, and dragged it to the "blog this" panel. Then, a blog editor appeared (pictured below) w/ the highlighted text quoted/linked and ready to go.
I then found the photos for my post using the Flickr toolbar, and popped 'em right into my post. Easy as pie.
There's still a few bugs in the browser, but it's still a "Developer Preview" so that's to be expected. However, in a few months you guys are really going to be loving Flock. Especially those of you who blog.
Oh yeah... I should've said this at the top of my post... Nerd Alert!
If y'all go to the show, tell 'em to come to Eugene so that I can see 'em. When they stop laughing, buy 'em a beer.
Thanks to Pedro for the info...

Squirrels on Crack? - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 8:45 AM | Permanent Link
There's a funny little rumor going around about crazed squirrels in London who are addicted to crack rock. Apparently, due to a recent crackdown (get it?) on drugs in the city, dealers have taken to burying their stashes in people's gardens. Who knows what the squirrels will do when they can't get their next fix?
Now this story also provides a good laugh, once you get over the shock that people actually spend this much money at a strip club! 10K for a lap dance???? Maybe I should rethink my career choice.

Less than 48 hours later, Sloan has the most recent bit torrent from the weekend available. This is a fantastic set from The Tom Collins at the Caledonia, this past Saturday night. It was their cd release party for Daylight Tonight and I have to say, one of the best sets I've seen from them yet. It also includes the very talented Philip McArdle (of the Star Room Boys) on guitar for a song. They have more shows coming up and a complimentary article in the latest Stomp & Stammer. Check 'em out.
On a completely unrelated note, here's the next greatest boy band. This is pretty funny stuff. (And how can that dude sit behind them without ever turning around to see what's up?)

It's really nice when you find someone on your wavelength. Though they're a little (okay, a lot) less bitter than us TDJer's, the folks over at Workers Work know what's up. On my mark... Release the CD's!
FRI: Good news for those of you (and there were quite a few of you) that missed the Ceiling Fan show last weekend - you get another chance. They're rocking the hell out of the Caledonia tonight, and I'm for damn sure gonna be there. You should be too. It's definitely within your last 4 chances to do so, and if you know how great they are (or even if you don't), that's a precious few shows left.
SAT:The Tom Collins finally release their album, Daylight Tonight, at the Caledonia. It's some straight-up rock n' roll (think Zepplin style) that doesn't let up. They're also joined by Producto and Pushbutton, so that's a pretty great lineup. More here. (P.S.- I wish Frank had a fanclub; I'd join.)
For a slower pace, there's Hope For Agoldensummer headlining the 40 Watt. I probably shouldn't have to say much about them at this point... soft, sultry, Southern, etc. But really good is the most important part. Now if they'd only get their asses in gear and make album #2. Seriously, y'all.
Also, as an alternative to everything above, there's the Paste Music Festival in Decatur. Lotsa Athenians Reprezentin'. And if you don't wanna pay, Chris sent this bit of info...
"[The festival] needs volunteers this weekend to help with box office, directions, artist catering, etc. Volunteers receive a free pass to the festival the day that they work and a t-shirt! There are two shifts each day on Sat. and Sun. Oct. 22-23: 12-5 (10:30am training, breakfast provided) and 5-10 (4pm training, snacks provided). If you're interested in volunteering, contact Kate Kiefer (kate@pastemagazine.com / 404.207.1206) as soon as possible."
So, there ya' have it. Have fun this weekend, y'all.

Lost & Found: Pimping Hinton - posted by Mail Clerk @ 8:30 AM | Permanent Link
For those of you who have never heard him or never heard of him, Eddie Hinton was one of the greatest soul singers of all time. He spent his career in virtual anonymity, though having played on nearly every record that came out of the famed Muscle Shoals Music Studio. He was friends with the Stones, Bob Dylan, The Staple Singers, Aretha Franklin, and even was asked to join the Allman Brothers Band. He turned all this down to focus on his own career, which was fraught with disaster at every turn.
Patterson Hood (whose father was good friends with Hinton) sums it all up pretty well here. The reason I mention it is that a very rare project of his is available for download for free. It's called The Coleman-Hinton Project and features songs written by Hinton's friend, Jim Coleman, and performed by the two of them. For those who have never heard Hinton, two particular tracks on this project feature wonderful examples of just what an amazing musician he was: "Just Like The Fool That I Was" and "Sha Na Boom Boom" (a cover of the Staple Singers' classic). The other tracks are negligible to the casual listener, but those two are worth every second you'll spend downloading.
If you like Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett, you oughta dig it. Just remember: these are outtakes - they were never released. Hope you enjoy.

Did you guys know that you all had up and coming career paths???

FRI: Good shows on both levels of Tasty World tonight, Ishues downstairs and Iron Hero upstairs. Whether or not they'll be able to musically synch up their performances through the floor remains to be seen.
There's also The High Strung at the Caledonia - always fun, fast, straight-ahead rock n' roll by guys in special outfits. It does rock.
And as always (when's that winding down thing happening again?), Redneck Greece & the boys'll be playing down at Jot 'Em Down.
SAT: In the afternoon, Jittery Joe's Five Points location will be hosting their annual outdoor benefit - for the American Red Cross this year. The line-up: Calliope Fair (1 p.m.) Carla LeFever & the Rays (2:10 p.m.) Sister Fleeta Mitchell & the Rev. Willie Mae Eberhart (3:20 p.m.) Buddy Blackmon & Friends (4:30 p.m.) Casper & the Cookies (5:40 p.m.) Five Eight (6:50 p.m.)
However, you might wanna conserve your energy because at the 40 Watt, their is going to be so much rock that even if R.E.M. and Jeff Mangum both showed up and played a full set at this show, it probably wouldn't add any more rock. For the first time since AthFest 2004, Ceiling Fan and Southern Bitch will be playing together. Those're two of the greatest bands (in this town or probably otherwise) and they're sharing a stage. This is worth your time.
Or there's Erik Hinds over at Flicker. Slayer covers on a self-made instrument.
UPDATE: Turns out there'll be no Casper & The Cookies on Saturday, but as a bonus tonight, I didn't realize that the HIgh Strung is opening for The Drams - Brent Best's (the guy from Slobberbone's) new band.

Basically, two guys (dressed as the game's heroes) beat the videogame Contra while the band, which includes members of Cinemechanica, scores it. Sounds cheesy. It isn't. It absolutely rocks (unless the game hangs up - that's happened, so I hear).

Something along the lines of the old slide guitar albums of the 70's. Brawny Paper Towel Man is Packin'! - posted by Legal Bitch @ 10:54 AM | Permanent Link
So I'm sitting around watching television with Computer Support and Tit Offensive this weekend (I'm visiting them in Oregon for the week) when a commercial for Brawny paper towels comes on that is just wrong. I think the concept of the commercial is a sort of "role reversal", meaning that some buff hot looking dude is doing stuff that makes housewives all wet, like cooking and cleaning and baking them cakes. So this buff hot looking dude is working on a birthday cake for his ladyfriend, and this creepy voiceover is going, and it's all very Stepford-esque, and then it really starts to go bad when the dude starts dripping dollops of icing on the countertop...like this:
Look like something else to you? Gross. Anyways, the dude takes a paper towel and wipes up his mess, and I could overlook the nastiness to this point, but then it takes another wrong turn, and the dude picks up the birthday cake and a puppy and approaches the camera, and this is where Tit Offensive and I practically jumped through the roof, as it looks like the dude has another present for his ladyfriend...IN HIS PANTS!!!
Holy crap! Did you shove a rolling pin down your pants or are you just happy to see me, Brawnyman??? I think the look on the dog's face says it all...

The Caledonia's packed with talent tonight. First, at 8 PM, Davide Barbe & The Quick Hooks take to the outdoor stage in this the second of their four-week bi-annual stints at the club. I always enjoy the hell outta those shows - always since the last 2 or 3 times they did 'em. After that, Casper & The Cookies open for Kenosha Kid on the 'indoor' stage (I guess that's what we gotta call it).
Also, just around the corner, Patterson Hood plays an acoustic set up at Flicker at 8:30 PM. Expect new songs and old friends, I'm sure.
Finally, if none of that's your speed, the 40 Watt is hosting a release party for the DangerDOOM CD (the collabation between MF Doom and DJ Danger Mouse). This has the potential to be great. Hopefully, it'll live up.

This Weekend In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 8:29 AM | Permanent Link
Before going out this weekend, make sure you've read this. I mean, lord knows I'm gonna ignore it, but I might think more about it...
FRI: Between Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, and Gang of Four at the 40 Watt tonight, you oughta be able to see something you like, right? I mean, I know it's two shows, but that's a pretty great line-up. The first two acts are the 7PM show, the latter act heads up the 10PM show. Man, that's a lot. More here and here.
Of course there's always country n' cue over at Jot 'Em Down with Redneck too.
SAT:Circulatory System takes a break from the everlasting recording session to perform their first non-festival show in a long while at the 40 Watt (the album, btw, supposedly no longer has the working title Blasting Through). If I said I liked their live shows better than OTC's would that offend anyone here? Hope not. Anyway, they're awesome. Will anyone special be joining them on stage? Yes, John Fernandes will be there! (Cause he's in the band.)
Also, Venice Is Sinking will be bringing their wonderful sounds to the Caledonia. I've kinda run out of great original things to say about them, but they're a fantastic band that's well worth your time and money. If they'd only release their LP and tour, I'm certain there'd be converts all around. Did I mention they made a great video? See it on their site.
Also, from Deej: "FRANCE at the EARL in ATL on Sunday with Architecture in Helsinki! We go on at 8:30 so folk coming from ATH can get home relatively early. New EP and other goodies."

Need a new cd to check out? I highly recommend downloading this bit torrent of Maserati from the 40 Watt on 9/23/05. Listening to this over the weekend helped me to get a lot of chores done, and even caused my roommate to come out of his cave to ask who it was. Sloan Simpson did a great job with this recording, so cheers to him too.

If I'm not mistaken (or if Flagpole's not), it looks like Astra's playing two shows tonight - performing on WUOG's (90.5's) "Live in the Lobby" at 8PM, then packing it up and heading across town to the Caledonia to play. That's some extreme show-promotion, y'all. UPDATE: Yeah, so apparently none of the above is happening. So it goes.

Dine For America - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 9:28 AM | Permanent Link
If you plan to dine out today, maybe this will help you make up your mind about where to go. For today only, a portion of the proceeds at specific restaurants will go directly to the Red Cross for Katrina and Rita victims. And yes, there are some participating restaurants in Athens.
Watch your ass, folks! - posted by Legal Bitch @ 9:25 AM | Permanent Link
It's not even safe to go the movies anymore in this town. Check it out - apparently a woman went to an Athens theater and got pricked in the thigh by a hypodermic needle taped to the seat. The article of course leaves out two important pieces of information - 1. Which theater was it? (so we can know where the junkies hang out) and 2. Which movie was she seeing? (because I'm just insensitive enough to make fun of this poor woman for her taste in movies despite her ordeal.) Watch your asses, dayjobbers!

Since the great of flood of '05, my dirty secret's been revealed: I'm from New Orleans, originally. Which means, of course, that my musical tastes occasionally overlap with those of hippies. Sad, I know, but in some cases justified.
For instance, tonight the Dirty Dozen Brass Band plays at the Melting Point (in Foundry Park). They're a really awesome brass ensemble and well worth your time and money. Fun for even the non-hippies.
Also, my apologies to Nutria for having completely blanked on their "Live in the Lobby" performance. Sorry, guys. Blame it on the bad chicken burrito that's been haunting me all week.

Is Your Favorite Restaurant A Health Hazard? - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 3:21 PM | Permanent Link
It's always interesting to see how your favorite restaurants in town are rated by the Public Health Department. It's not like I didn't already suspect some places I frequent aren't the cleanest, but it's still fun to find out I was right about those places. However, I was surpised by some. Check it out.
Thanks to Jim for sending us the link.
Are You Intellectually Disabled? - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
So, I'm sitting here flipping through notes for a test in my special education class (go ahead, joke it up). And as it turns out, I think I might be "intellectually disabled"...
HOW DO YOU SPOT AN INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED STUDENT IF YOU ARE A GENERAL EDUCATION TEACHER?
1) Immature: They act like a younger child. They interact with younger children. 2) They can't handle conflict. 3) They have a hard time making friends. 4) They have poor organizational skills. 5) They have poor academic skills. Many gaps in learning. Poor handwriting in many cases. 6) A "I can't do it attitude" 7) Inability to generalize. 8) Memory deficits: forgets from day to day. 9) Poor vocabulary: can't remember specific names of things. 10) Poor self-esteem: easily led and will give up easily. 11) Reluctant to try new tasks. Tries to solicit the help of others. Depends on the teacher too much. 12) Low frustration tolerance. 13) Short attention span. (I like that they put this one last.)
*Most students display some of these behaviors. Intellectually disabled students exhibit most of these behaviors. So, how did y'all score? Sorry if I was the first to break the news to any of y'all.

Nicholas Cage's new kid is named Kal-El. Isn't that from Superman? Anyway, although I can't find the video for it, the whole thing reminds me of this SNL sketch. (Thanks to Hillary for the link!)

Van Morrison: The Bang Records Contractual Obligation Sessions - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:02 AM | Permanent Link
Thanks to Pedro for this...
"Thirty-one Van Morrison demos, each one written pretty much as it was being recorded, each one more ridiculous than the last one... he churned these out in a matter of hours to finish his obligation to Bang so he could go to Warner and make Astral Weeks. Funny stuff, especially if you're already a Van fan and aren't used to hearing him act so silly."
Monday Morning Sound-Off - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
Hey y'all - tell us what's up and what you've liked lately. A little something different this week as I have two particular items worth some extra pimping...
First, Vet Pharmacist and I made the official venture to the Danielsville Guthrie's location, and it was well worth the drive. For those interested, here's their info:
Guthrie's of Danielsville 715 Hwy 29 North (just past the Danielsville town square) Danielsville, GA 30633 706/795-5279
It's about a 30 minute drive depending on where you're coming from, but it's great. They said they've been open for about 3 weeks, and from the sight of it, business was booming. Again, thanks to Jimmy for the heads up.
Also, I saw a movie so particularly great that I thought I'd mention it here. Chrystal, the feature film debut from Ray McKinnon (the Oscar-winning director of the short film The Accountant), is really amazing. Some top-notch acting and writing for sure. Sometimes a bit over the top, but for the most part very authentically Southern. Oh, and there's DBT on the soundtrack. You can rent it now, I got mine at Vision Video. Highly recommended.
Anyway, let us know what y'all liked in the comments...

Also, it's that time of year again as David Barbe & The Quick Hooks begin the first night of a month-long stint outside at The Caledonia on Monday nights. This show is also early (at 8 PM).
Given the weather and many folks around hear asking about earlier shows, I'd say tonight's a great night to get out.
UPDATE: Sorry, I made an error. The Jolly Beggars show starts at 7PM and lasts till 9PM. The gates open at 6PM, so you can get a good spot for picnicking!
