For folks who are into downloading bittorrents, here is the Drive-By Truckers set from Saturday night at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. This show was the 20th anniversary of Patterson Hood and Mikey Cooley playing together, originally in Adam's House Cat, so the mood was festive. Athens' guest musicians Fran Capitanelli (The Tom Collins) and John Neff (everything) joined in on the fun. Thanks to Sloan Simpson for recording the entire night.
Pictures from the show that someone on the fan listserv took are here. It also includes pictures from the Alabama Theatre gig from the night before.
In other Athens music news, Widespread Panic, who tends to keep their charity contributions subtle and out of the public eye, has announced that they will be doing a charity show at the Roxy Theatre in Atlanta on 12/28, the night before their annual two-night run at Philips Arena. Tickets are expensive, but I guess that's the point. Lots of money will hopefully be raised to promote music education in schools.

It's the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and chances are that you may not be doing much at work on Wednesday, so why not head downtown for some music tonight and stay out a little late. Portland's Jerry Joseph (Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome) will be at the Caledonia supporting his solo effort Cherry. It'll be two sets of acoustic guitar-based songs. While that may sound a little on the snoozy side, it's definitely not. Jerry is a fantastic songwriter who can really bring a song to life, and actually have something to say while at it.
If you are looking to crank up the volume a few notches, Mother Jackson will be over at the Tasty World tonight. If neither of these work for you, there is always karaoke at any number of bars in town. Don't scare the neighberhood.

Thers is yet another interesting new way to check out bands and songs on the internet. This one is called Pandora and basically you type in a band you like, then it suggests other stuff you may like. It starts playing the suggestions and you can skip to the next song if you like. I just started playing around with it by typing in a couple of bands and so far it's been pretty interesting. Not that I like everything it suggests, or that some of its suggestions even sound much like the one I said I liked, but it's a good way to listen to tunes online. Subscription is totally free unless you don't want ads, in which case it's then $3-4. Can't complain about that.

While not a band from Athens, Slobberbone was definitely a band with ties to Athens. Lead singer/songwriter Brent Best has put one of his guitars up for sale (one that he has taken on every tour) as well as an original 1st edition Crow Pot Pie. Thought someone that happens to see this might be interested in these items and possibly able to help Brent out. If you are not familiar with Slobberbone, they are no more but certainly have a wealth of great albums you should check out. The first (actually, the 2nd) time I saw them live, I decided right then and there that they were one of the best "bar bands" I had ever seen. I am still sad they broke up.

So remember a while ago when I asked all you lazy bastards to give us the low-down on exactly what type of perfume strippers wear? Well, some Googlists swooped down and solved the enigma.
As a sidenote, a friend of mine who used to also do stripper make-up (apparently, that's a big business for burgeoning make-up artists) said it wasn't a perfume at all, but rather some sort of body lotion (she named it, but I've since forgotten). Anyway, glad the mystery is finally starting to unravel.
(Also just for the record, we are now the #1 site on Google for "stripper perfume", which I find to be totally awesome.)

Reasons You Should Appreciate Athens - posted by Computer Support @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
This is going to be an ongoing series of posts in which I list things that I miss about Athens...
The Engine Room (call it Room 16 if you want, it'll always be the Engine Room to me)
Eugene, OR has no good bars.
TTO and I were invited by some of her classmates to go out this past weekend. Being that we have no friends, we were excited to have been asked. "Give us directions to the bar" we said.
Upon arrival, we discover that the bar is in a strip mall... and it's a sports bar.
We were sure there'd be no one inside the bar but crusty old men. Much to our surprise, it was filled w/ college students. Keep in mind... we're not talking about "Franky Freshmen" and "Susie Sophomores". These were older, grad student-looking folks who would likely spend alot of time on the Pulaski St. end of downtown Athens...
Let me just say this one more time for emphasis... College students in Eugene hang out in a sports bar that's located in a strip mall!
This made me miss the Engine Room... but it also made me feel guilty for spending my last few years in Athens w/o frequenting my old bar.
So, be sure that you don't take the cool Athens bars for granted. You could be in a strip mall in Eugene, OR watching celebrity poker on ESPN.

In an effort to promote community developement, an anonymous donor has given a very large amount of money to the Kalamazoo school district. This donation will ensure that every high school graduate in their district gets a full, or partial, 4-year scholarship to any Michigan college of their choice! Now how's that for generous?
And if you haven't heard by now, Pat Robertson is an idiot. Earlier this year, he called for the President of Venezuala to be assasinated. In his latest media stunt, he told the people of Dover, PA (who voted against Intelligent Design being taught in their schools) that if they have a disaster in their area, not to turn to God, since they rejected him from their city. And though the article I linked to this morning doesn't say it, I heard on the radio that he told them to turn to Darwin instead of God when they needed help! Now why do a million people a day watch his show? No seriously...why do they?
Last but not least, if you think the Beatles get enough airplay as it is, now they have a new territory to conquer...space!

Patrick from Music Hates You wrote us (and a whole buncha other folks) recently with a few thoughts and some upcoming project news. Since we encourage random rants about things Athens, here it is pretty much verbatim...
Music Hates You has been on tour for the last week, and we were really blown away by the super-positive responses we got in towns like Montgomery, Alabama and Spartanburg, SC. Contrasted to the semi-lackluster responses we have gotten from Athens club audiences (as opposed to house party audiences- this is a distinction that will become clearer in the next few paragraphs), we were kind of perplexed. We were wondering why music fans were so much more supportive in towns where you wouldn't expect there to be any kind of scene at all. It seems kind of counter-intuitive, doesn't it?
On the other hand, we returned to Athens to play at the Secret Squirrel, and it was like seeing the old Athens music scene that Noah and I remember from when we first arrived here. Hundreds of people drinking beer and playing music on a Sunday night... this seems like a really good thing.
I think it's partially because Athens has been such a place to see music for so long, and the pantomime of going out to see music has become as formalized as a Japanese Noh Drama- Find a place to park, get snubbed by the door guys, find out your name is not on the guest list, pay (sometimes A LOT), get the handstamp, get a PBR, wish you could smoke inside, go outside to smoke (sans PBR), talk through the opening band, watch most of the headliner's set, feign surprise (or not) when they come back for an encore, go home (or the Go Bar on the way home for some company and a nightcap) and sleep it off, lather, rinse, repeat.
I think that the smoking ban has set off a string of Unintended Consequences, not least of which is that it has re-energized the house party scene. There are fliers going up every week where the venue is simply listed as "The Peter Street House," or "Your Mom's House" or "The 666 House." Out of that scene has come Dark Meat, Ceramic Dvck, Mouser, and to some extent, Brown Frown and Music Hates You, though both of those bands predate the smoking ban.
People go to house parties because they're less structured than the club scene (no snotty door guy, no handstamp, no ID check, no guest list, no cover, no bouncers, etc.), and they can hold a burning cigarette in one hand and a cold beer in the other and not be arrested. (¡Viva la revolucion!) The fact that the Secret Squirrel has one of the last PAs in town that isn't blown doesn't hurt, either.
What the house party environment does is open things up to experimentation and hybridization. That's what inspired [this essay]. I am not objectively anti-Tasty World or anything- I think bands should have a place to play where they can actually get paid for it, once in a while. I have heard that such places exist. Somewhere."

New Michael Houser Album - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 9:33 AM | Permanent Link
For those of you who were fans of Michael Houser (Widespread Panic, Brute) before his passing from pancreatic cancer in 2002, you'll be happy to know that his 2nd and final posthumous solo release, aptly titled "Sandbox," will be available January 24, 2006. While some of the songs have been played live before, much of the material was written and recorded in the final year of his life (when he wasn't out on the road playing). One week before he passed, he gave the recordings to John Keane who was then tasked with finishing up the project. Keane has created a website that tells the story of the album, along with some sample mp3s and lyrics to read. The album is a final parting gift from Mike Houser (and his family and friends who made this possible) to his fans.
While on the subject, it should also be noted that the band Houser started, Widespread Panic, has somehow found the time to have some of their music recorded for the Adult Swim Series on the Cartoon Network:
"Perfect Hair Forever," the forthcoming Adult Swim original series, has quietly amassed a wealth of original music to be used in the show. Widespread Panic is the most recent artist to compose an original tune on behalf of the production, which makes its Adult Swim premiere on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 12:45 a.m. (e/p). Other artists who have already contributed music for the series include Melt-Banana, MF Doom and Diplo."

Okay, so it seems like everyone's getting sick. I was getting sick last week too. My wonderful GF brought me over some Airborne. I thought I was the last person to hear of it (and that every housewife and businessman in American had had secret stashes of it for years). Apparently, not so.
Anyway, I was feeling like crap, then I took it, then I woke up feeling better. Not 100%, but quite functional. You're supposed to take it every 3 hours. It dissolves in a very small glass of water and tastes like Orange Fanta. I can't say it'll cure a major sickness, but it kept me functional during a mid-week sickness till I could sleep it off over the weekend. So, despite the annoying website and trendy pseudo-med nature of the product, I've gotta recommend it. Next, I'll be joining Oprah's book club.
Also, the Staple Singers kick ass. Just wanted to let everyone know that too.

If we weren't meant to play with it, then why is it at arm's length? - posted by Computer Support @ 12:15 AM | Permanent Link
At a recent halloween party I saw a fella dressed up as a mormon. He had a bike helmet, white short-sleeve shirt, black tie, book of mormon, etc. Same old thing that's been done a million times.
However, this guy took it one extra step. He handed out this Guide to Overcoming Masturbation to party-goers. I found it funny enough to be shared with TDJ-folks.
Here's a few highlights (along w/ my comments):
"If you are associated with other persons having this same problem, YOU MUST BREAK OFF THEIR FRIENDSHIP. Never associate with other people having the same weakness. Don't suppose that two of you will quit together, you never will."
I don't get this tip... Having a friend w/ the same problem would lead to sex, right? It's a sure-fire cure!
"If the temptation seems overpowering while you are in bed, GET OUT OF BED AND GO INTO THE KITCHEN AND FIX YOURSELF A SNACK, even if it is in the middle of the night, and even if you are not hungry, and despite your fears of gaining weight."
But if you're fat and have an overpowering urge to eat junk food in the middle of the night, go straight to your bedroom w/ a box of tissues.
"Pray. But when you pray, don't pray about this problem, for that will tend to keep [it] in your mind more than ever...BUT KEEP THE PROBLEM OUT OF YOUR MIND BY NOT MENTIONING IT EVER — NOT IN CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS, NOT IN YOUR PRAYERS. KEEP IT OUT of your mind!"
Instead... keep it bottled inside and pray for a new bike.
"A careful study will indicate you have had the problem at certain times and under certain conditions. Try and recall, in detail, what your particular times and conditions were. Now that you understand how it happens, plan to break the pattern through counter activities."
For some reason it always happens during women's beach volleyball matches. Do I have to stop watching beach volleyball?
"Arise immediately in the mornings."
That's often the problem though... right?
"Wear pajamas that are difficult to open, yet loose and not binding."
So... three layers of silk?
"In very severe cases it may be necessary to tie a hand to the bed frame with a tie in order that the habit of masturbating in a semi-sleep condition can be broken."
Tie my hands to a bed post... good idea.
p.s. I do have a few Mormon friends... So, in case they're reading this, I'm not singling out Mormons. I imagine there are plenty of Baptists/Methodists/Catholics handing out similar pamphlets.

Pop, thrash, math, and country all in one weekend, gotta love it...
FRI: Kind of a quiet Friday night, but there is a great show at Tasty World where you can catch the always-charming Venice Is Sinking along with the pop sensations Murder Beach rocking it out. That's probably one of the catchiest nights of music in a while.
SAT: As part of the "Fourth Annual Lunch Paper All-Stars", Brown Frown (who to my knowledge has actually never played there) will be playing there. The official start time is 10 PM, but you know how that goes. If anything is un-broken after last night's show, this'll finish the job. Oh and beyond that, their new material is great. Their debut EP, Romans, is available now on vinyl and is highly recommended.
Across town, Heros Severum will be releasing their new CD, Plague Dogs, at Tasty World. As a three-piece there were together, but not much different from many a math-rock act. As a four-piece, they're now heads above most others. Two other great acts, We Versus The Shark and Iron Hero, will be playing as well. If you want your mind blown by precision playing, this is the place to be. More here and here.
Finally, if anyone's wondering what's happened to the Redneck GReece shows at Jot 'Em Down, there's a bit of confusion. F'pole has it listed this week as a Saturday night event to be followed by a show at Eastwood Pub at 10PM. Roll Up Your Sleeves, Brownie - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 11:53 AM | Permanent Link
CNN has a fascinating article today centered on the email exhanges between ex-Fema Director Michael Brown and his staff during the Katrina catastrophe. Big shocker coming: the guy, among many other public officials, was not on top of things, to say the least. Nonetheless, they provide a PDF link to a short report that Democratic representative (LA) Charles Melancon put together based on the emails that were submitted for investigation.
Alright, is it just me or does there seem to be a little flirting going on between Brownie and Ms. Taylor? (If it is just me, then maybe I need to watch some more soaps or somethin'.)
Taylor writes to Brown, “I know its early, but … My eyes must certainly be deceiving me. You look fabulous — and I’m not talking the makeup!” An hour later, Brown obviously seems very concerned by the disaster as he writes "I am a fashion god.”
I'd consider having that as my new email tagline if it weren't so damn sad in the grand scheme of things. When in times of crisis, roll up your sleeves! “Please roll up the sleeves of your shirt … all shirts. Even the President rolled his sleeves to just below the elbow. In this cris[is] and on TV you just need to look more hard-working … ROLL UP THE SLEEVES.”

The sisters Campbell (of Hope For Agoldensummer fame) play Tasty World tonight. Bringing the usual mix of forlorn southern gothic-tinged love songs with a fun mix of covers. Watch out for hippies. (Seriously though, they're good and well worth braving the patchouli and the sound system there.)

Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads bring good, honest rock n' roll to Tasty World tonight. I've always known they were good, and I'd heard rumors of recent lineup changes, but F'pole's got the scoop: "The former Dashboard Savior's still at the wheel with Jay Tootle on guitar and Pat Pawlowski on bass, but recent line-up changes have brought Rob Veal (Monday Night Recorders, ex-Dashboard Saviors)and Dan Orchik (ex-Deacon Brody) into the mix." So, that's pretty cool. If you've recovered from last night (or even if you're just going for that "hair of the dog" kinda thing), it'd be a great show to catch.
Speaking of last night, feel free to drop mention of your favorite costume (including your own) from last night in the comments!
