Greatest Living Songwriters - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
There's nothing geeks love more than a poll. And here's your chance. Paste Magazine wants to know who you consider the greatest living songwriters of all time. You gotta pick 20 out of their 400 (or write in your own at the bottom). Lots of Athenians in the mix including REM, OTC, DBT, VIC, and lotsa other bands without three-letter initials too. Vote now, or forever hold your peace.
Happy Mardi Gras! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
It's the time of year where hedonism is at its peak in many parts of the world, so of course we're celebrating. "Eat Drink & Be Merry For Tomorrow, We May Suffer", right? Anyway, you can rest assured that for however long you've been up today, someone's been up longer drinking in New Orleans and plans to keep at it till Midnight, so there's your downward social comparison.
As I've mentioned several times since Carnival began, Home of the Groove is the source for free, great New Orleans music. It's loaded with good Mardi Gras songs right now, too. In addition, there's a whole set from piano-genius James Booker (possibly the best pianist I've ever heard) up here and another from funk legends The Meters here - both from the Aquarium Drunkard mp3 blog (a few great Athens-related posts there as well).
If you come across more good free NOLA-related songs, please post links in the comments. If I find 'em, I'll do the same. And if anyone's giving up stuff for Lent, comment away! (I gave up Coke last year - wouldn't recommend doing that.)
Until then, Laissez Les Bons Temps Roulez, y'all.

Speaking of Eric, he'll be pulling double-duty tonight as Ham 1 performs later on at Little Kings after comedian Pete McBrayer. More on the latter here.
Also, there are two chances to hear Sleepy Horses tonight. First, you can all turn on your radios (or the Internets) to hear them perform on WUGA's (91.7's) "It's Friday" show at 4 PM. Then later on you can see them around 8:30-ish at Flicker.
(And if anyone complains about me leaving out Fripp, you will be branded a guitar nerd.)
SAT: If you like it loud and slightly experimental, then check out Ceramic Duck down at Caledonia. They're good, but that's really all I have to say about that.
And if you just wanna "dance, dance, dance", then there's I Am The World Trade Center and the Krush Girls at the 40 Watt. I'm sure someone else'll have something to say about that.
Yes, this is the best version of this graphic I could find. SUN:A Taste Of Athens makes its annual appearance at the Classic Center from 6-9 PM. As usual, over 50 local food & beverage vendors'll be there and there's a whole buncha games and whatnot too. But mostly you can get drunk and fed like a mofo.
Tickets are $40 ($35 for groups of 6) advance and are available from at Jittery Joe's, Rolling Pin, Aurum Studios, Homeplace Gifts & Toys, Marti's At Midday, Border's, and at Community Connection (as well as the aforementioned website). They will be available also at the event itself.

Carnival Time - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:12 AM | Permanent Link
Folks mighta' missed the news story, but over the weekend Carnival season kicked into (relatively) full force with some of the larger Mardi Gras parades taking place. Of course, crowds were sparser (word?) than usual, but all the same the good times were rolling down in New Orleans once again.
So, for novices and old-timers alike who might be looking for some great Mardi Gras music, there's a coupla' options. First, if you've got money to blow you can grab a copy of the old' standby Mardi Gras In New Orleans - if you replace the Earl King track with Dr. John's "Mardi Gras Day", you'll have the mixtape that's been circulating around New Orleans natives for over three decades, simple as that.
For those without money, once again I'd recommend dropping by Home Of The Groove. This NOLA-centered mp3 blog will be putting up song after song of classic Mardi Gras music for the next week and a half or so - all the way till Fat Tuesday (Feb. 28th). Right now, they've got Al Johnson's "Carnival Time" (also on the aforementioned CD). Good start to your own, free Mardi Gras mix. Enjoy, but get 'em while they're hot - songs only stay up for 3-4 days each.
And for those who don't give a crap, thanks for indulging me.

FRI:Cinemechanica and Iron Hero host a CD release party for each of their albums together at the 40 Watt tonight. We Versus The Shark, who always sound amazing at the Watt and will hopefully also play new stuff, also play. More info here and here and here.
SAT:Folklore (I didn't forge this time!) and local big band Dark Meat perform at the Caledonia. There's gonna be a lotta catchy songs there this weekend, it looks like.
Finally, the trio of Porter-Batiste-Stolz is playing at the Georgia Theatre. At least two of those are really fantastic New Orleans musicians (played with the Meters). But probably only hippies and a few NOLA folks care about that.
SUN:Arlo Guthrie, who is way too old to have that hair, is playing Hodgson Hall at UGA. Show starts at 7:30 PM (don't know what time "Alice's Restaurant" starts). More here.

New Athens Music On iTunes - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:26 AM | Permanent Link
All Michael Stipe's Guests Are Special If any of you haven't heard yet, last week Michael Stipe released a new single, "In The Sun" through iTunes. There are a buncha remixes and stuff on it and the Coldplay guy and Justin Timberlake and some other people. But in all honesty it's a pretty good song and the proceeds go to help hurricane victims in the Gulf. Contrary to many news reports, things are still really, really bad there and those people need all the help they can get. Here's the ABH's story on it, and here's the full list of album credits at AMdC.
While you're on iTunes, I'd recommend downloading the Liz Durrett song "They Say It" from her Cup On The Counter single. The song is fantastic and was inexplicably left off her latest album (no offense to the other songs on the single, I just haven't heard them). Maybe this is just Liz's inner shrewd business-woman coming out.
And finally, Drive-By Truckers fans will wanna check out the aforementioned Feb 14 single on iTunes as well. You can obviously get it for free elsewhere, but the b-side is a cover of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone".

Something else we got a notice about that's not quite local-music-related but sounds interesting... A Hafla is a Middle Eastern Dance Party. It's not just a performance, it's a community celebration. Here are the details:
Athens Annual Hafla Friday, February 10th at Little Kings Club
We will open the doors at 8, dance performances start at 9:30, Open floor dancing before & after the show. Bring a drum(mer) or your zills if you got em' to start the evening.
$3 with a dish to share, $5 without. Beverages available at the bar. Contact Chris at dance@christyfricks.com.
(The word 'HAFLA' is common to both Arabic and Hebrew and means 'celebration' or 'party', and it has a particular connotation as being the third stage of the peace process that comes after the stages of truce and reconciliation. As a group our Hafla will be asking you to imagine such a celebration of peace.)

Also, local purveyors of loud music A Bitter Fight Against Nothing play their final show at Tasty World tonight. I never got to hear 'em play and I doubt I ever will, but I figured I should mention it since they kinda made a name for themselves in their brief life as a band (That being said, note to bands: Automatically loading/playing music on your site is always annoying). Music Hates You also plays (for extra incentive to hard-core folks).
Before all that Deanna Varagona (of Lambchop fame) performs a solo set at Flicker. It's country/folk-ish stuff, if you've never heard it. Show starts around 8:30.
Finally, We Versus The Shark play one of their increasingly infrequent (club) shows tonight at the Caledonia. They're hard at work on their second album and will hopefully share some new songs tonight.

Nobody Beats a Kiefer Kia Deal - posted by Computer Support @ 12:04 AM | Permanent Link
I'll tell you what, I thought that local commercials were bad in Athens, GA... but Eugene, OR has the WORST local commercials. One great example is this guy, whose commercials feature him pretending to be a redneck (everyone knows that no true redneck would live in Eugene, OR). He wears a sleeveless flannel shirt, has a mid-arm tan line, and says "We'll get 'r done" as if he's the first person to ever use that line.
However... Kiefer Kia takes the cake. They have a series of commercials featuring this ditz singing and talking and smiling as if a hair dryer were stuck up her ass. Really, I can't describe it. I was hoping that their site would have a commerical you could watch, but it doesn't. So I'll have to resort to providing you with a series of screenshots:
I know it seems that I'm choosing the worst frames from the commercial... I'm really not. Her latest commercial features her singing in white-girl-soul-fashion, "Nobody beats a Kiefer Kia deal." Another features her wearing a santa hat and tube top while holding a beach ball.
I really do wish that the rest of the country could see these ads. They'd really make you proud of your hometown... that is... if your hometown is not Eugene, OR.
