SAT: Finally back from months of recording, Nutria plays Flicker as a show billed as "Nutria & Friends". So many friends you wonder if there's gonna be tickets for sale. There won't be after everyone finds out about possible special guest Michael McDonald. Show's at 8:30-ish.
The big show of the night is Elf Power & The Minus 5 at the Georgia Theatre. Elf Power's playing new tunes, undoubtedly. And the Minus 5's in support of their new album. Peter Buck'll be there. Who knows what'll happen. More here.
Of course there's also the math-ish, rock-ish sounds of Heros Severum at Tasty World, the long-absent rap of former (and sometimes present?) Athenian Ishues at the 40 Watt, and the louder than hell sounds of frequent players Music Hates You at the Caledonia, going for most number of gigs in a semester.
If anyone's bored that afternoon, there's gonna be a big carnival type thing out on Legion Field. Games and prizes and cotton candy and whatnot. All to benefit the Athens deaf community.
SUN:Barbara Cue, who have long been absent to due Widespread Panic tours and whatever else is happening with them returns to the stage at the Melting Point. More here.

Their new album Fort Recovery is out now (they are selling vinyl copies at the shows, too). Thanks to Sloan Simpson for being "The Man" and taping yet another show.

The drawing to the left was created by Annamieka Hopps, a 21 year-old student at the University of Oregon. Last year, she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma after waking up with a mysterious swollen neck. She kept a graphic diary throughout her ordeal that details the diagnosis, chemo, radiation, recovery, etc. Click here to view her drawings, you'll like 'em.
The reason I'm posting this is because she's now my "honored teammate" for Team in Training. Team in Training is an organization that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The money is then used for research, patient aid, education, and community service.
What's an honored teammate you say? Well, I committed to raising $4000 and riding my bike 100 miles around Lake Tahoe. She committed to cheering me on, showing up at training events, helping with fundraising, etc.
So... what's this got to do with you? Well, we need money! I know you people are all poor... so I'm not asking for $500 here (though, that'd be nice). If you could spare $5, $25, $50... whatever. We'd love you for it.

An interesting twist on an old band tonight at Flicker as "Kenosha Kid Sells Out". It's gonna be a whole set of Athens covers. R.E.M., The Possibilities, HFAGS, etc. I've been wanting a band to do this for a long time now. Or at least have move bands include Athens classics in their sets. Show at 8:30, possibly a second set later. More here.
Also, just before that (around 8), Sleepy Horses will be on WUOG's (90.5's) "Live in the Lobby". They've played out so much lately, I've run outta things to say, but it's an apt name and the music's good.

UPDATE: The Reuters story is here. Ongoing commentary also on his MySpace page including this quote that someone posted:
"One of the great things about being a musician is knowing you don't have to retire. I have a friend that will retire in 10 years because he's 55. I'll never have to do that. I can play until the day I die. I can't think of a better way to spend your life. If you make yourself happy and you make other people happy. What's more important? Your soul. I can't think of anything better to do." -Nikki Sudden

FRI:Of Montreal makes their way back into town from their extensive and quite successful U.S. tour to play the Watt. I don't know if it's sold out yet but if it isn't, it will, so get your tickets soon. Michael Lachowski (Pylon) will be DJing afterwards with his new photography subject, Atom. Also, there's Producto at the Caledonia.
Don't forget about the Robert Osborne Classic Film Festival. Today's films are: Ed Wood (1:30 PM), The Third Man (4:30 PM), and Breakfast At Tiffany's (8:30). The latter will feature a discussion with actors Patricia Neal and Mickey Rooney, so that's pretty cool.
At the ROCFF: Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1:30 PM), On The Waterfront (4:30 PM), and Best In Show (8:30 PM) - featuring a post-film discussion with special guest Parker Posey. Seriously.
SUN: The ROCFF winds down with a full afternoon's worth of Gone With The Wind, starting at 1:30 PM. There's a brunch beforehand with Robert Osbourne. Who doesn't want that?

Remember these guys?
While completely nerding out trying to make a mix of songs that were great singles in the 90's and don't really get play nowadays, I came across a nearly-complete archive of playlists from MTV's 120 Minutes. It's fun to just kinda scan back and see what was played when. And you can watch the show tank in the late 90's (starting a bit before '97, really). Fun for music nerds of all types.

Also, does anyone know if the "Cameo" that's performing at the Georgia Theatre tonight is the same "Cameo" that sang "Word Up" in the 80's? Cause that would be awesome (though I have no idea why if they reformed that they'd be opening a quadruple bill at the Theatre).

FRI:Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars perform for the first time in a while at Go Bar. Sounds like a great place to see them play. I dig small venues and speaking of, Bloodkin performs a warm-up show of sorts at the Georgia Bar tonight as well.
Music Hates You is also playing two shows this weekend, the first at Tasty World. So, are they the house band for Caledonia or Tasty World at this point?
SAT:Bloodkin performs their larger show at The Georgia Theatre. They always manage to pull of good sound there (which is somewhat rare in that big room), so it's a nice place to catch their show if you never have.
SUN: The Georgia Guitar Quartet performs for the first time in a while at a venue listed in F'Pole as "OCAF". I'm too dumb to work out that abbreviation. Anyone wanna help?

The Drive-By Truckers announced their upcoming tourdates today. None in Georgia at the moment, but plenty of gigs with Son Volt in other towns. Widespread Panic just announced a theatre simulcast of one of their two Fox Theatre shows in May. A great way to solve the problem of those Fox tickets getting snatched up so quickly (ticket "vouchers" go on sale this Saturday). Their new album, Earth To America, recorded in the Bahamas with legendary producer Terry Manning, will be out in June. And finally, Pitchfork currently has a review of an Of Montreal show. That's it, for now.

Apparently, despite the reunion tour several years back, the Sex Pistols weren't too keen on being part of the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. According to the grammatically-disastrous note he wrote, John Lydon's still about fighting the system. But wouldn't it have been cooler to actually show up at the awards, have everyone expect you to do something "kinda out there", then do something so totally over the top that it freaks people out and maybe sends a few running? That woulda been punk rock to me.

FRI: A couple of rare appearances by E6ers this weekend (isn't the entire camp a little inactive at the moment?) as The Gerbils and The Instruments take the non-stage at Little Kings. I guess this means folks are in town and ready to rock and fortunately, so am I.
Of course, there's also a good lineup over at Tasty World featuring Pushbutton, Murder Beach, and a too-rare appearance by The Savoir Faire. It's a pop-licious combo, that's for sure. Can't lose at either show, I'd imagine. More here.
Finally if you can't stand pop or you're just not in the mood, then there's the fine hardcore of Music Hates You over at the Caledonia. Plenty of screaming, an anti-authoritarian attitude and lots of volume. Fun.
Update from Computer Support: I usually don't get involved w/ This Weekend in Athens posts... because I don't normally know what's going on. However, as Hillary pointed out, the Silver Jews show has gotta be mentioned. I'm jealous.
SAT: Our friend Liz Durrett plays at the 40 Watt. She has an amazing voice and if you haven't heard her (and especially if you have), you'd do well to go get her new album, The Mezzanine. Think Cat Power but less whiney and more stable (which is most people, but the voice is what I'm getting at). It's amazing. More here.
If you like things more experimental, you can always catch Cinemechanica and Maserati over at the Caledonia or Eric Harris' new project, Diet Rock Star, at Flicker.

And finally, she leaves us with the heartwarming story of a man who decided to dispose of a loved one's remains the old-fashioned way: by feeding them to his pigs, telling everyone he was in a nursing home, and then stealing from his bank account. Ah, Germans.
