The Ginger Envelope and Sleepy Horses both perform at the 40 Watt tonight. That's a good combo of alt-ish, rock-ish, country-ish sounds that oughta go well together. I wouldn't expect the most up-tempo show ever, but should make for a great relaxing evening.

Kinda quiet weekend (Remember bands: get gigs on the weekends before and after AthFest - that's when no one else is playing)...
FRI:The Low Lows (featuring former Parker & Lily folks) perform stuff from their upcoming album as well as Summer Hymns (still in trio form as far as I know) performing stuff from the past and from the album that someday might be - all at the 40 Watt. More here.
SAT:The Bearfoot Hookers spread debauchery at Tasty World once again. Tonight they play with Unknown Hinson, whose posters scare the living crap out of me. That noggin is gigantic. More here. (Disclaimer: I've never actually heard the guy play, but that picture was just too creepy not to post.)
Also, Hot Grits return to bring some folk-ish, pop-ish stuff to Flicker.
SUN:Sleepy Horses help ATHICA celebrate four years and Memorial Day. A cookout to ensue, I believe.

It's a battle of the TDJ regulars as you can either catch Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars at the Georgia Theatre or Nutria (& Friends) at Flicker. Actually, as the latter starts around 8:30, you could probably catch both. It's like a choice between the man who wrote "Na Nanana" and a group who covers it well (what're the chances Bob Hay would go sit in on it someday?). Either way you can't lose, but both is best!
BONUS: There's an newly-available outtake from Nutria available here and a lo-res video from The Jolly Beggars here.

Southern Bitch will have portions of five of their songs played tonight on CNBC's "American Made." (Monday, May 22nd at 8pm EST/7pm CST and re-airs at 11 pm EST/10 pm CST). Four new songs will be played (Strong Medicine, Freeway, Rising Star, Get Ready) as well as Mark of the Beast from "Snake in the Grass."
On another note, Kevn Kinney's Sun-Tangled Angel Revival outfit has released a new album, "Comin' Round Again," that is not yet out in America. However, it is available for purchase here if you are anxious to get a copy.

It's what we've been begging for pretty much since this blog started, and it's finally happened.
That being said, it's hard to blog about another blog frequently, so I'd just recommend y'all do what I did and put this site in your bookmarks for daily visits, cause you won't wanna miss some of this stuff. We'll add it to our links asap as well.

FRI:Fabulous Bird and Murder Beach (who are apparently hiding their album from the public) play a great pop double-bill at the Caledonia. Hey does anyone know if that "Pincher" comp ever got released (the one where each contributing band wrote a song called "The Pincher" that had to be under a minute in length)? I've heard a Fairburn Royals version of it and a Murder Beach version of it and both were great. Anyway, should be a fun show.
SAT:Annie & Her Guns play their farewell show at the Go Bar tonight. Annie is packing it up and heading overseas apparently. No word on what her guns are doing.
There's also a fantastic triple bill featuring Producto, Still Small Voice & The Joyful Noise, and Babies Who Hurt People at the 40 Watt. Seems like Producto's really come up lately. They're making a bassist switch soon as well... so bass fans will wanna catch this show and then another afterwards to judge the quality. More here.
UPDATE: I thought Chris was talking about the alphabetization joke in the first listing, but he's actually referring to the Glands comment in the third ad.

The Spraker-man and myself have in fact been kicking out some new jams as of late with Kyle Harris (Sleepy Horses) on bass. Fortunately he's a bad-ass and has made starting over after a decade with a solid line-up an easy transition. We're taking things as they come but should be back in action (read drinking free pbr at the Caledonia) again before too long. We'll be sure to keep you posted. Rock on!

The Short Version: How do you like the way we link? Do you prefer:
- Links to open in new windows - Choosing for yourself
The Longer (Nerdier) Version: In the past, we've always assigned a target to links so that they'll open in a new window. However, some folks think this is bad form. The idea is that users should be allowed to choose on their own whether or not a link opens in a new window.
By assigning a target, we're forcing you to open a new window. I know that I occasionally get annoyed w/ not being able to open TDJ links in the same window. However, it's also nice (especially for tab-less IE users) not to lose your spot on TDJ.
So what do you think? Do you even care?

I finally got around to reading my May issue of Wired this weekend... and they have a great guide to online video. For those of you who are too lazy to read the article, here's a few of my favorite finds:
* It's Jerry Time - By far, my favorite... I'm an IJT super-fan now. They're basically photo-animated shorts about a lovable loser named Jerry. He tells about his adventures with his landlord, moth-infested apartment, ex-girlfriends, etc. Great stuff! Apparently, I'm the last person in the world to have found Jerry. He's even been nominated for an Emmy! (Extra note: This site really made me wish Legal Bitch and Mail Clerk would collaborate on a video blog for "Tales from the Real OC")
* National Archives on Google Video - What better way to kill time at work than to watch a 1975 documentary about aliens? Or a 1979 movie about Mars?
* Punkcast - I've been to this site several times, but never took the time to click around. They've got a ton of great concert footage, including several Nikki Sudden vids... One of which was shot less than 40 hours before his death.

FRI:Bo Bedingfield & The Wydelles and the Shut-Ups both perform at the Caledonia - one act a strong up-and-comer and the other your only chance to get your Ben Spraker fix now that Ceiling Fan's defunct. Word has it that Spraker and Gerow have a new project in the works with one or two other folks. Have to wait and see (Ben, Dave, someone e-mail us with details!).
Also, the always-charming Venice Is Sinking performs at Tasty World. I'm still waiting on the outdoor evening-time show I've been begging them to perform over and over on this blog to no avail.
Also, there's the Gordon Lamb's birthday party at the Caledonia featuring a variety of acts as well as MC Pete McBrayer at the helm. It's a good place to see a short man with a beard get roasted. Only $2, I think. More info here (scroll to the bottom).
The new-wave-ish sounds of Flash To Bang Time can be heard at Little Kings, which I imagine would also be a good place to see a famous man in a driving cap ("In the club lookin' so conspicuous").
And finally Suny Lyons at the 40 Watt, which I don't have a catchy addendum for. Or at least, not one I care to post.

If you just wanna get drunk and dance the Krush Girls is happy to serve that want at the 40 Watt... it might be your last chance to pick up drunk college kids till the fall.
SAT: All day long in College Square is the umpteenth annual Athens Human Rights Festival - where you can hear bands and other acts from around town in between screaming rants by aging hippies. The lineup:
* Henslee & Kenslee (10:30 a.m.) * Pam Blanchard & the Sunny-Side Up Band (11:05 a.m.) * Athens Montessori Singers (12:25 p.m.) * Dr. Arvin Scott and Drumming for Success (1:10 p.m.) * Stab the Cook (1:45 p.m.) * Girls With Guitars (2:20 p.m.) * Tommy Jordan & String Theory (3:45 p.m.) * Art Rosenbaum (4:30 p.m.) * Leslie Helpert (5:15 p.m.) * Bearfoot Hookers (6 p.m.) * Polemic (6:45 p.m.) * eLeMeN.O.P. (7:45 p.m.) * Music Hates You (8:30 p.m.) * Dubconscious (10:15 p.m.)
Except for the serious Dub-Con fans out there (do any of you read this site?), might I recommend using the post-MHY time to grab dinner before the night's festivities, which are many.
Firstly, there's the "Superfluous Umlaut Family Reunion", which is a loose collective of loud, unkempt bands centered around my heroes, Brown Frown. Unfortunately, you're going to have to decide between the outdoor Music Hates You set (sure to frighten a few passers by, which would be great to see) and seeing footage from the upcoming Harvey Milk DVD, which will be shown around 8PM at the Caledonia before the bands start. I'm not gonna make that call for you. Creston Spiers might also guest with the Frownies at this show. Full lineup and more info here.
* Bob Hay & the Jolly Beggars (2 p.m.) * St. Eel (2:45 p.m.) * Rhabdophobic (3:30 p.m.) * Waxwing Trio (4:15 p.m.) * Tim Conley (5 p.m.) * Sursie (6 p.m.) * Strawberry Flats (6:45 p.m.) * Ralph Roddenbery Band (7:30 p.m.) * Bling the Children Back Home (8:15 p.m.)
If you've never caught our friends in Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars live before, this is a perfect opportunity to do so free of cost, given that you can get your lazy ass out of bed by that time. More here.

We generally don't do online petitions here at TDJ, but seeing as how the internets plays such a big role in our daily (boring) lives, this seemed like something we should get behind. We've confirmed that it's all true.
From MoveOn.org: "Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. Amazon doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer."
