Two Sides To Every Cow

For those who have seen the new film Two-Headed Cow or for those who know about the history of the Flat Duo Jets, it appears Crow has lifted his silence as to the band's end. It didn't make it make it into the film (and it woulda made exactly the kind of push and pull that a great documentary needs, so I'm not sure why), but there's a lot less fake Crows out there than fake Mangums, so I'm inclined to believe it. Thanks to whoever sent us this link.

This Weekend In Athens

Not AthFest, but not empty...

Father Time Shreds!

FRI: Holy crap, Hayride comes out of hiding to finally play a show and even mentions recording. Why isn't this in Pitchfork? Anyway, they're bringing some hard-ass rock to the Caledonia and it's gonna be loud as hell. New-ish project called The Owen 4 opens. They've got good folks in that band, so expect good things. More here.

Also, over at the Watt Bo Bedingfield & The Wydelles will be performing with Geoff Reacher. Who else might round out a show like that you ask? Why none other than comedy genius Pete McBrayer. Funny and rocking. Can't beat that. More here.

And just to prove we really are checking our MySpace account, here's a little note from Venice Is Sinking (who were kind enough to add us as friends before we even announced our page):
hello,

i just wanted to let you all know about a show we are putting together for tomorrow night (6/30) at stan mullins gallery...

the show will take place on pulaski street in the old warehouse / art studio / house / barn / building next door to the 666 house just before you get to the railroad tracks on pulaski.

the line up is going to be as follows:

big gray
the ginger envelope
venice is sinking

but, not neccessarily in that order. the music will start at 8:30 and go until midnight or so. there should be a couple of old satellite dishes filled with ice and PBR, but please bring some liquor and/or beer if you feel so inclined.

thanks,
venice is sinking
Thank you, VIS!

SAT: Not quite as much going on, it seems, but Tin Cup Prophette and (former Audition With Max Reinhardt vocalist) Sanni's new band Panda will be playing the 40 Watt. If you're like me and missed 'em at AthFest, now's a good time to catch up. More here.

Athens Audio (AthFest Edition)

Just a heads up that Sloan's posted the Producto set from the Caledonia on Saturday over at Southern Shelter. It was a really awesome set and well worth the time to download, I'm sure. Thanks, Sloan!

All The Kids Are Doing It

Okay, we finally dragged ourselves into the world of MySpace. That's right. A MySpace account for a blog. Pretty nerdy. Anyway, we wanna be friends with you and/or your band. So here's our Myspace URL:

http://www.myspace.com/thedayjobsdotcom

Please add us so we don't have to add 300 people/bands one-by-one. Hopefully one of the other TDJer's who actually have MySpace accounts already will teach me how to use this damn thing (do you have to sign up to a band's blog to get updates from them or just be their friend?). Anyway, Henry Owings is already OGMSTDJDC.

Dear Pitchfork: We Told You So

Pitchfork's all over some post that Mangum supposedly wrote on the Internets about the future of Neutral Milk Hotel. If you didn't know he was recording, it wasn't our fault (if you check this link out, here's a better link to the comments thing... the one in the original post makes you scroll through Robo's perverse rhymes).

UPDATE: Since Pitchfork seems to be on the fritz, here's a link to the actual post supposedly made by Mr. Mangum.

UPDATE 2: Pitchfork's updated their story based on the comment that Robert left on the same board at E6 townhall (that Shawn was nice enough to post for us as well). And yes P'Fork, he was recording when Robert was here. Now calm down. More on Mangum later.

Athens Music (AthFest 06)

If you missed some music this past weekend because you can't be in two places at once, you're too old and grumpy to go out, or you just want to re-live some of the music you saw, check out the mp3s that Sloan Simpson will be posting on his blog in the coming days. First up is Nutria from the Caledonia on Saturday night. The songs are available in flac format as well. Happy listening.

"Oh Boy Is He Happy"

Thanks to Mike for sending over this clip of Bama/Jets superstar QB Joe Namath being interviewed after a long day of celebrating the Jets' season...

AthFest Wrap Up - Desktop Publisher

Another year, another great AthFest. If only we could get the city to deem the Monday after AthFest a holiday next year. For now, however, a look back on my weekend.

For me, it really started on Thursday night at the 283 Bar for solo sets by local upcoming singer/songwriters Meghann Jordan and Mark Brut. Both have different styles, both very enjoyable. I attempted to catch the acoustic Mother Jackson show at Flicker but the timing never worked out in the end (ultimately, it didn't work out for their other 2 shows either and this was one of my bigger regrets of the weekend). Time to call it a night. Friday night started directly after work for me. Rushed over to catch the 2nd half of the Workhorses set at the main stage. Great group of guys to kick off the music at the main stage with. It was their last song when the skies opened and the rain came pouring down and everyone ran for cover and somehow in the midst of all this, William Tonks seemed to revel in it with a big smile on his face, still playing away. It was coming down too hard though, so the stage and all equipment got covered up for awhile, which led to an hour delay over there for the rest of the night. This, and the rain storms to follow throughout the night, threw off my sense of timing for where I wanted to be and ultimately, my energy level as well.

I did manage to get over to the Tasty World in time to catch powerhouse vocalists Kimberly Morgan and Betsy Franck, backed up by a side guitar player from Betsy's band. Even though this was really the beginning of the weekend, I knew right away it was already one of my highlights. Amazing voices from both girls so together they just blow you away. And it doesn't hurt that they can actually write good songs with great, catchy lyrics. The set ended with a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." If you haven't seen either of these girls yet, you are missing out. I know we all hear that phrase a lot in Athens, but it ain't a bad problem to have right?

For the rest of the night, I just mosied in and out of venues, catching a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Saw something like 9 bass players on stage with Coulier, apparently it was their last show so they pulled out all the stops. It was so dang crowded in the 40 Watt all night, I pretty much avoided it the rest of the evening. I wanted to catch the Modern Skirts to see what all the fuss was about, but a quick trip home to let out the dogs thrawted that effort. I managed to make it over to the Lunch Paper for a bit of The Dumps, but unfortunately the people with me were not having it. And who could blame them, it was so dang loud in there, I guess I kind of predicted that would happen anyway. I will say that for what they do, those guys have a great band going and musically, I think they are a force to reckon with. If you haven't seen them, and you don't mind things a bit loud, check them out. Too bad I couldn't stay to see them play more, but I needed to save my hearing for the rest of the weekend. We had big plans to check out both Contraband and Lona at 1 a.m., but the bodies just couldn't take it anymore by that point and off to the house we went. I heard both bands put on great shows, as usual.

Saturday was the night I knew I would need careful planning and maneuvering to make it everywhere I wanted to be. It always seems that this night brings the most conflicts for me. So much to see, so little time. I arrived just in time to catch Goat on the main stage and it was nice to see so many other folks "get" what many of us have been saying about this band for awhile now. Definitely one of Athens' more unique offerings and whenever I know they are playing around town, it's hard for me to sit at home and miss it. This set was certainly a good one, as usual. Walked over to the side stage just in time to catch a truly well-performed set by Liz Durrett and backing band. Those that know me well know that Vic Chesnutt is one of my all-time favorite songwriters, so it was nice to see him there, but tonight, it was all about that melancholy voice of Liz Durrett's that moves me each time I hear it. Nice to see her with a "fuller" backing band than I had seen before, and except for the douchebag standing up front, a great set.

One of the things I was most excited about was Now It's Overhead. I'm going to have to respecfully disagree with Mail Clerk on this one and say that I thought it was yet another fantastic set from a fantastic band. Sure, I don't think it had quite the same punch as their last two shows at the 40 Watt, but I blame that on the fact that it was outside and much more open. Harder to catch the various layers in the music that this band has in that kind of setup, but I thought they gave us a good mix of songs with that mellow energy they have that seems to go well with the music. I've had "Hi" in my head since.

Though I wasn't planning on it, a delay in the schedule at Flicker had me in the car and over to Nuci's Space in the blink of an eye for Kimberly Morgan's solo set. To my surprise, however, most of her Everloving Band was there to help out. Backed by Adam Musick on electric guitar, and Chuck Bradburn on bass, and later Wendy Musick on guitar (happy birthday Wendy!), these guys did yet another amazing job. This is truly an act not to be missed.

Before that set was over, I had a date to catch some of Magic Missile back at the Flicker. Made it there just in time to hear a few of their catchy songs about elements of the periodic table (no kidding). Fun band to see. But, I was already missing some of Nutria so I hightailed it over there to catch the 2nd half of their set. They were obviously kicking ass and I'm glad I got there in time to see it. My feet stayed firmly planted at the Caledonia for what I knew was going to be one of my other highlights of the festival, Producto. Admittingly my current favorite band in Athens right now, I have not been disappointed by their sets yet (only disappointment that they end so quickly each time). If you went to their last show at the 40 Watt, it was along the same lines of them playing more of their mellow songs, including a gorgeous cover The Glands' Pretty Merrina. But in true Producto fashion, they kick into rock mode at various points of the show, bringing to mind on occassions a nice Led Zeppelinish vibe. These guys shouldn't be pigeonholed though, as they are truly unique. I love it when Ane looks possessed by some higher power as she sings. And for Philip McArdle's second show ever on bass, big hats off to these guys. It was 1 a.m. and I walked over to the 40 Watt to catch some of The Whigs, but after a song or two, I was ready for some fresh air and to catch up with friends outside. For what these guys do though, I gotta say they are pretty good.

Sunday found me recovering most of the day, but I did manage to take a drive back downtown for two final sets. The first was the Dexateens from Tuscaloosa, AL on the side stage. Young kids that have a pretty cool thing going on. They are a force musically, and bring these great grooves (especially those bass lines). Hopefully their songs will evolve a bit more over time, but I encourage you to check 'em out on musical merit if anything. Finally, I caught Drivin' n Cryin' at the main stage to close out my weekend. I've always felt like DnC has been one of the tighest bands for years, and they really are still no different in that aspect. My only downer is that I'm not too big on Joey Huffman's additions on the keys. At moments, it added to it, but most of the time it took away from what they were doing in my opinion. But I've felt the same about his additions to other Kevn projects in the past as well. Still, I'm a sucker for Kevn's songwriting and voice and seeing these guys rarely disappoints me, even after all these years. The crowd was still quite big at this point so I was glad for them. But after hearing some of the songs I really liked, it was time to call it quits and say goodbye to AthFest for the final time.

Another great weekend of music that really makes you appreciate Athens and all it has to offer. What other weekend festival has such easy parking too?

Most gaping holes in the lineup this year for me were, as others mentioned below, no Ceiling Fan or Southern Bitch shows at the Caledonia like we have come to enjoy. Both were missed. But, sometimes traditions have to be broken right? On the upside, this year's highlights for me have to go to the female vocalists/songwriters in our town...Kimberly Morgan, Betsy Franck, and no doubt about it, Ane Diaz. These girls have star power and voices that truly give goose bumps. Watch out boys, the ladies are stealing your spotlights!

Now, if I could just figure out how to get my butt in gear for Brown Frown tonight...

AthFest Wrap Up - Mail Clerk

FRI: The rain pretty much held me away for a while. Kinda took a lot of steam out of the evening. I wandered around clubs early on looking for something to really hit me. Things were off schedule by the first band in several places, but I eventually figured that I could catch most of Music Hates You before We Versus The Shark even got started. And man, I'm glad I did. They killed the stagelights, turned on two giant worklights which beamed out into the audience, turning the band into silhouettes, and let out a huge roar. I think it scared the hell out of everyone there, but nobody left. It was awesome. The bassist jumped into the audience and broke his bass in the process. It really started AthFest for me and was probably my favorite show of the whole festival.

We Versus The Shark is incredible too. They always nail it perfectly at the 40 Watt, especially during AthFest. My only worry is that they're so good now that anything less than that is a letdown. And where the hell is album number 2? Oh well. They rocked it and everyone was moving and having a great time. They owned that place.

Afterwards, headed back over the 'donia to chat with MHY. Patrick told me this great story about a confrontation with WUOG staffers. Finished talking, caught the end of Contraband's set at the 40 Watt - they're probably one of the funnest shows around. Overhead Mike Mills comment, "I thought I'd seen it all..."

I wanted to see more, but the night was pretty much over on that side of town and I didn't hear about the afterparty at the Secret Squirrel till the next day.

SAT: Didn't wake up till 2. Didn't make it to the Fest till 4-ish. Saw Time Toy's set, which started off kind rough and plagued with electronic glitches, but hit some high points. Anyway, Bryan's a helluva nice guy and I like to see him dance. So it was fun. The heat was way too much at that point, so me, Legal Bitch, and the esteemed Mr. Sloan Simpson split to dinner at Transmet.

Came back for drinks right before Goat rocked the main stage. It was loud and raucous the whole way through. I maybe coulda used one or two more slow numbers and that great fiddler who's with 'em sometimes, but other than that, no complaints. The crowd dug it too.

After that, Liz Durrett played a short set as the sun went down. Aside from a small disturbance (read Legal Bitch's post for more), the set was fantastic. Just what was called for at that time of day after DC's rocking set and as everyone was praying for the heat to subside. Vic Chesnutt sat in on his favorite new toy: that noise-making machine thingy. It added a cool background sound to all the songs. Her voice is of course always impressive.

Headed back to the main stage after that to see Now It's Overhead. You know, when they announced them as the headliner, I thought it was a great choice. Andy's always been able to command a stage since back in the Drip days and they proved they could handle large audiences on the tour with R.E.M. However, they show was pretty lackluster. Don't know what it was. The new material seemed kinda boring and the first album material really stuck out as being the stuff the audience got into. Whatever the cause, I just wasn't feeling it.

That was okay, because just afterwards I got to see Casper & The Cookies in top form. Catchy and great, they really do improve every time I see 'em, despite the revolving line-up. Hopefully they'll bring down the house at Popfest. Way to go, Mrs. Fandango on the pea-snapping too!

From there, I hit up the Nutria show. They kicked major rear-end. It was REALLY loud in there, but that made the rock songs that much more rocking. The bonus was getting a copy of their double-album Metronome/Cheef many months early. It's great.

Of course, mere minutes later the highlight of the night hit the stage. Producto played with such force and confidence that the whole audience seemed bowled over. Ane, Frank, Creston, Philip: y'all brought the house down. Hearing Ane's voice overpower the whole band several times was pretty incredible. Definitely the best show of the night and perhaps matching Music Hates You's performance there the night before.

I thought I was done for the night at that point, but I decided the hike to Tasty World was worth a try. And it was. Dark Meat was in the middle of a very loud, very awesome performance upstairs to a packed house. That three-chord 60's rock progression thing is awesome. Really, all I could think of was that I was jealous: Who doesn't want their own horn section, percussion section, and female background vocalists at their disposal? How could it not be great? No let down there.

Again, thinking I was done, I headed downstairs to see what Heros Severum had in store for their last show. No let-down there either. Well, the sound in front of the stage left something to be desired (or maybe I was just deaf from the Dark Meat show), but standing next to the stage you could really hear how talented all those folks are. They invited practically the whole club on stage to band on chairs with wooden blocks (a trend for this Fest, weirdly enough), and chaos ensued. I went home to sleep it off. No Sunday for me.

Sorry to carry on. I thought I was kinda sick of a lot stuff around town lately, but a lot of these bands re-invigorated my love of this town and its music. Hopefully, y'all caught good stuff too. My apologies to the many acts (many of whom are friends) who I did not catch. I'm lazy.

The pix that aren't from Legal Bitch's Flickr site are courtesy of Spotted. Find many more of them here. If you upload any anywhere, drop us a line in the comments. Also, keep your eye on Southern Shelter for whatever Sloan has to offer all of us from these and many other great shows. Way to go, Athens - and many thanks to Jeff Montgomery, Troy Aubrey, Jared Bailey, Michelle Roche (for hooking a couple of TDJer's up with press passes - we are totally a legitimate media outlet), and all the volunteers who help make AthFest what it is.

Tonight In Athens

Brown Frown hosts their own "AthFest Hangover" show at the Caledonia. If you know those guys, you know where they work and you know that there's no chance in hell that all four of them would ever by let off to play AthFest... so this is the next best thing I s'pose. Pearls and Brass open, who I've never heard, but who Andrew swears are awesome. We'll see.

AthFest Wrap Up - Legal Bitch

AthFest continues to be one of my favorite events of the year. So many bands, so little time.

Friday: Started out late due to the rain. Caught the last bit of Five-Eight-lots of jumping around on stage per usual. I was pleased to notice that, unlike last year, they had someone working the sound board at the main stage who didn't have his head up his ass (and didn't play crappy music between the bands - anybody remember them playing 311 last year? what gives?). Ducked into the Caledonia to check out Garbage Island, which was interesting. I think I liked it, but for some reason it made my tummy hurt. Scooted over to check out Summer Hymns on the Hull St. stage, a band I've really grown to like recently. The beginning of their set, however, was plagued by the annoying girls in the Verizon booth next to that stage, which seriously pissed me off. I want to hear the bands, not teenage girls doing bad karaoke renditions of Beyonce songs. Hung around to check out this phenomena called the Modern Skirts and felt like I was in a bad episode of The O.C. (the one on t.v, not the one I lived in). While it was catchy, their carefully crafted hipster image and their obnoxious ratty ball-cap/polo-shirt/khaki shorts wearing fans grew thin on me quickly. Plus, it seems most of their fans are around 15 years old, so I think it's time Athens instituted a curfew (or a limitation on the number of douchebags allowed downtown at one time). Cut out of there quickly and met Mailclerk for drinks to decompress. Jetted over to catch the tail end of Colonel Knowledge and the Lickety Splits at the 40 Watt, who were jammin' out in the place. Headed to Caledonia to see Music Hates You. Primal, fierce, energetic and scary. They cut the stage lights and put spotlights onto the audience and proceeded to blow my ass away. I'll definitely be seeing these guys again. Skipped over to the Watt to see We vs. the Shark. These guys always kick ass at the Watt, and this time was no exception. Sweaty, danceable fun. Ended the night with the always fun Contraband. Makes me wanna play Nintendo.

Saturday: Things didn't really get started until Don Chambers + GOAT hit the main stage, who were great of course (so good, in fact, I ditched my plans to catch part of Murder Beach's set at Caledonia - a friend later told me they did a cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" - Hillary has more on that here). Swooped over to watch the lovely Liz Durrett on the Hull St. stage and was once again annoyed by the Verizon booth and some a-hole shouting at the front of the crowd (he garbled out something like "play a f'ing" something-or-other and eventually threw a water bottle toward the stage-he took off right as I was near my breaking point, which was lucky for us all, since I was contemplating beating the living crap out of him-and if you're reading this buddy, next time give us a f'ing break why dontcha?). Hightailed it back to the main stage to watch a polished set from Now It's Overhead. How such a huge voice comes from such a tiny boy is beyond me. Getting ready to hit the clubs, Mailclerk and I mourned the lack of our usual AthFest Sat. night lineup of Southern Bitch and Ceiling Fan. Jumped over to Caledonia and caught a couple songs by Jackpot City, but I wasn't digging it and I needed some A/C relief so we ducked into the 40 Watt to catch Casper & the Cookies. A new lineup seems to have invigorated their songs, as they put on a tight show with more rockish numbers, and a special appearance by Casper's mom, who's a super cool lady. Hopped back to the sweltering Caledonia for a sweat-soaked, ass-kicking set by Nutria. Scored a free t-shirt and an early copy of their upcoming double-album (they only got 40 advance copies so you better hurry if you want one!). These guys never disappoint me, and you can't convince me that there are two better songwriters (or nicer guys) in town other than Bob Spires and Jay Gonzales. But the true revelation and high point of my AthFest came next with a fiery set by Producto. I'd never seen this band before and am kicking myself for not hitting one of their shows sooner. It was 100 degrees in the 'Donia but I had chills. Ane's voice is an exquisite instrument, and her stage presence is unmatched by any other vocalist in this town. Powerful and captivating stuff - I will not rest until I get a copy of their record. I knew nothing could top this set for me, so I headed home and left Mailclerk to wander around town. A shower never felt so nice.

Tonight In Athens

The musical part of AthFest begins...

The traditional beginning of the music part of AthFest is of course the Flagpole music awards. They say:
The best single night of entertainment available! It's Flagpole's annual salute to the best in local music, with awards voted on by all you tremendously attractive Flagpole readers. This year's shindig includes performances by Producto, Mandy Jane & the Jaws of Life, Dark Meat, Phosphorescent, Modern Skirts and the ever-rocking house group The Magictones. 8 p.m. See p. 17 for the full deal.
All this starts around 8PM (don't believe that "Sharp!" crap they're throwing). After party at the Watt. Pre-party there too - if you want the scoop on that e-mail us then also drop us a line in the comments cause we'll never remember check that account otherwise.

As mentioned before, the acoustic version of Mother Jackson will be performing with comedian Pete McBrayer at Flicker. The flyer is in yesterday's post. It's sorta an after-party too for the awards show. More here.

Other acoustic shows feature the Dromedary Quartet at Farm 255 around 9PM and Meghann Jordan & Mark Brut at 283 around 7PM.

Finally, for the folks who like it loud (and rock-a-billy-ish), Dexter Romweber takes the non-stage at the Lunch Paper to tear it up. More here.

Tonight In Athens

Woo... AthFest!... kinda.

Note: The above flyer is actually for tomorrow night's show, but other than that and the difference in time and missing an act, it's totally accurate for tonight. Basically, I'm too lazy for Photoshop right now.

Our friend Pete McBrayer sent the following heads up:
Pete McBrayer, Comedy Genius
Mother Jackson
Don Chambers

Flicker Theatre & Bar
Wednesday, June 21
8:30 PM
$3

It's a dress rehearsal for our late-night Thursday show. I'll be performing my full standup routine "100 Jokes", Mother Jackson will be playing in various combinations, and we'll have a "special guest" Don Chambers for a couple of songs.
Thanks for the heads up, Pete! For music fans, there's also The Late B.P. Helium, Madeline and a few others at the Caledonia. And Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise at Tasty World. Oh, and Mother's Finest at the Melting Point for all those who want a piece of the rock. More here.

For film fans, AthFest officially kicks off tonight with the Sprockets Film & Video Festival at the 40 Watt featuring lots of your favorite local acts' music videos. The winners will be played at the F'pole Music Awards tomorrow night. Also, before that there's a special screening of Tony Gayton's film Two-Headed Cow, about Dexter Romwebber as well as a anniversary highlights segment and Q&A for Athens, GA Inside/Out. As I write this, the new F'pole's not online, but there's a Romwebber story there somewhere. All of this starts around 8PM and is presented by Film::Athens.

Damn that's a lot going on.

Danger Mouse in NY Times

The NY Times Sunday magazine has a nice article about former Athenian DJ Danger Mouse. There are a few glaring omissions from the article however... such as the fact that Danger used to sell me CD's at Wuxtry. Or the fact that he was Gardner's R.A.

Other than that... a great article.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

How was y'all's weekends? Anyone do anything excitingly great? Anyone get sunburned like me? Let us know what's great around here. We wanna try.

Goofiest Southern Cover Art

Dave from AMDN posted a comment with an interesting topic of conversation that he received via e-mail:

Hi there,
I'm an intern at the Oxford American, a Southern literary magazine published out of Conway, Arkansas. We're putting together our annual Southern music issue right now, and we want to do a spread on "goofiest Southern record covers." I figured you all would have some unique insight into the topic, blogging about Athens music. Do you have any suggestions? Anything would be helpful, as long as it's somehow Southern and goofy. Thanks!
Georgia Faircloth

Any ideas? I'm not sure if they want a list of southern bands or a list of southern cover designers (i.e. Finster does Talking Heads)... so suggest both if you got ideas!

The Ten Commandments

Q: What are the ten commandments?
A: Uhhhhh... don't lie.... don't steal... uhhhh... don't cheat.... uhhh... don't burp.... don't put yer elbows on the table.... uhhh... how many is that?

A man that Georgians can be proud of.

This Weekend In Athens

One week till the Fest...

FRI: Brown Frown opens up for the hard-edged Japanese rock of Electric Eel Shock at Tasty World. Should be fairly packed, so get there early (to really soak up the muggy heat). Expect a buncha new tunes from Brown Frown who hasn't played a show of original material in a while. Also, their new album is gonna kick ass.

There's also a rap show (yes, a rap show) a the Caledonia. Locals Big Earl and Ishues perform alongside others. Those two are among the best if not the best in the area, so it's well worth a venture to check out.

In addition, venturing out to catch Folklore, Vetran, and The New Sound Of Numbers at the 40 Watt tonight isn't a bad bet either - especially for indie rock/pop fans. In any case, there's something for all tastes tonight.

SAT: Firstly, in the afternoon and early evening, you can head over to one of the best parties in Athens: The Blind Pig Tavern's Third (or Fourth?) Annual 5 Year Anniversary. Bands like Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads and Betsy Franck & The Bare Knuckle Band will be performing, but the real pay-off is tons of free, delicious food (all you gotta do is find a place to park, buy your drinks, and find a place to sit). The end of the fiscal year is awesome.

That night you can also catch Casper & The Cookies at Flicker at around 8:30 PM, Clay Leverett doing a solo show at the Melting Point around 9 PM, and/or Russian Spy Camera at Tasty World later on in the evening.

Tonight In Athens

Beck, Beck, more Beck at the Georgia Theatre. For reals. Anyone go last night? Let us know how it was.

Tonight In Athens

The first of the Sunflower Music Series kicks off at the Botanical Gardens tonight with outta-towner Tim Easton performing with The Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry. Assuming good weather, these shows really are a great thing to see. Show at 7 PM. More here.

Or, if you have Beck tickets, you already know he's rockin' the Georgia Theatre like a man from the Catskills.

Hi, I'm a Mac... and I'm a kitten

Awwwwwwwww....

Tonight In Athens

The "AthFest Sampler Hoot" takes place in the outdoor area behind Loco's off Baxter Street. The Campbell Sisters (from Hope For Agoldensummer) perform as well as our friends in Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars. Should be a great outdoor show assuming it doesn't rain. Plus, you know, you can eat Loco's at the same time.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

How was y'all's weekend? Please, please tell about anything good at that you ate, drank, heard or otherwise experienced. Seriously, cause it's summer and I'm bored. And if anyone knows of any good beach vacation spots within a 8 hour drive without a high cost or that Panama City vibe, please let us know. Cause I wanna go there.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: The weekly WUGA (91.7) show "It's Friday" features the Workhorses of the Recreational/Entertainment Industry today at 4PM. It's an hour-long show and I'd have to imagine that this band's sound is custom fit for a good radio show. Definitely a great way to spend your last hour of work if you have to stay that long.

Not much else in the works tonight, anyway.

SAT: The return of Goat happens at the 40 Watt. It's loud, raucous banjo music hopefully with no krautrock influence now, but you can never tell. More here.

AltMusicTV

AltMusicTV is "your guide to the past, present, and future of alternative music videos on television." Most notable for those who are looking to waste time at work, they have youtubed videos from every recent Subterranean playlist.

Might knock a little time off your workday.

It's Jerry Time!

There's a new episode of It's Jerry Time available. This one's about a brute that shows up in his hockey league. It's a little shorter than the others... but still good.

ArchCam

Seeing as how all of you guys live in Athens, and I don't, you've probably already read about this in an Athens newspaper...

The New Media Institute has created an ArchCam. Basically, you stand under the arch, dial 706-425-3107, and smile. Soon thereafter, your photo will be posted on the ArchCam website.

If you get your photo taken on your lunch break today, tell us in the comments. We can then get an idea of what some of you mo-fo's look like.

New(ish) OutKast

Okay, I'm the last person on Earth to realize this, especially since iTunes has it, but the new single from the oft-delayed new OutKast soundtrack album Idlewild has been up at Gorilla Vs. Bear for a while now. Just thought I'd post it for anyone else who might be interested yet somehow totally missed it.

Tonight In Athens

Jimmy Hughes (Folklore, Fairmount Fair, Elf Power) performs his song solo tonight at the Caledonia. I'm imagining this means Folklore songs and not a capella Fairmount Fair material, but I could be wrong. You'd have to go to know.

Also, there's Russian Spy Camera at the 40 Watt.

Tonight In Athens

A great double-bill at the Caledonia as Sleepy Horses and Pushbutton both perform there tonight. It's a great juxtaposition of up and down tempo with plenty of catchy stuff on both ends of the spectrum.

6-6-6

Per Robo's request, we need to talk about the Devil and stuff since it's 6/6/06.

What does it all mean? The date is analyzed here. How'd you like to live in Hell, Michigan on 6/6/06? Yes, there is such a place. Slayer fans consider 6/6/06 the "National Day of Slayer." And here is Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" on video for your pleasure on this devilish day.

Athens Music on TV

DBT on Conan

Don't forget that the Drive-By Truckers will be making another late night appearance on tv this evening. They return to Conan O'Brien. The band will be performing Aftermath USA from their latest release A Blessing and A Curse. Athens represent!

Hug Me

Are you feeling lonely at night? Need a loving touch? Here is your solution.

And for a trip down memory lane, check out these "Unintentionally Gay Videos". There is some seriously great stuff here to distract yourself with. (Thanks to Jenn Bryant for the links.)

Steven Seagal: Without Prepositions

The the concert just around the corner (one week from today, yo) here's a preview of Steven Seagal's new album, Mojo Priest. I'm not sure I should say anything more about it. Wouldn't want to ruin the experience (or get effed up by a karate master).

(Thanks to Mike for the link and Robo for the original heads up on the show!)

Gnarls Barkley: Still Crazy

The Gnarls Barkley phenom keeps growing. They're on CNN.com today and I think they also perform on the MTV Movie Awards this week as well (along with like every major summer concert). Not bad for Cee-Lo and Gardner's former RA.

Athens Audio

Just a heads up: One of the best shows I've seen in the past year or so is up at Southern Shelter right now. You can download the entire set from the Star Room Trio show at the Caledonia last November (in mp3 format... sorry lossless people). Includes a great Springsteen cover that they used to play when the Star Room Boys were together. Enjoy.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Hey y'a'll. Welcome back to the week. How was everyone's weekend? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know what's cool that's worth doing around Athens. Seriously, just try and contribute something. Summer's here and we all need new ideas (like for instance did anyone know that the largest population of kangaroos outside of Australia is located in north Georgia? Who knew?).

And please don't forget: today is the last day we'll be up on the old server, so update your bookmarks now (of course, if you're on the old server, you won't see this post anyway - but let your friends know).

Good Luck, CS!

Just wanted to publicly wish Computer Support the best of luck this weekend as he takes his bike south to ride it against cancer. Thanks to all those to donated money to the cause (he totally suckered me into it too).

Bronson Arroyo: Strange Pitchman

The Cincinnati Reds' newest recruit is settling into his new town doing some commercial work on the side... Some NSFW commercial work (does it not look like they just used an outtake?).

(Thanks to Hillary for the link!)

Also This Weekend...

Our friend Jason Mallory (who used to photoblog for us way back when) just sent this over...

"Sorry for the short notice, but I just got final verification about this, and I'm having a show featuring artwork from the "Feather King" section of the website at the Updown Gallery here in Athens Saturday Evening. Here's the show info:
UPDOWN GALLERY
Opening reception for "The Feather King," new work by Jason Mallory. Updown Gallery (Jackson Street) on Saturday, June 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Updown is across the street from Toppers, next to the thrift store; they usually hang a yellow flag outside during shows."

Fest Line-Ups (Mostly) Solidified

As pointed out in yesterday's comments, the lineups for AthFest (except for two spots at Little King's on Friday) and Popfest have been announced fully:

This Weekend In Athens

Music Hates This Weekend...

FRI: Despite what you may read, Music Hates You is NOT playing at Tasty World tonight, which when you factor that out means there's not a lot going on musically (is everybody already napping to get ready for AthFest?).

For those that just wanna shake, shake booty (without as many college kids around), the Krush Girl(s) "play" the 40 Watt tonight.

SAT: Finally ready to release their long-in-the-making new album Send More Paramedics, Music Hates You performs at Tasty World with The Dumps and several other punk-ish colleagues. The album's loud and angry and sounds great and is everything you want from a metal album. You can get it already downtown, if you're interested. The show is a benefit for the West Memphis 3. More here and here.

There's also something a bit more low-key (which admittedly means it could be just about anything) with Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise at the Caledonia.

SUN: A second MHY show. House party. I don't know the specifics other than that Brown Frown and a buncha others might play too. If Patrick drops by, maybe he'll share.

TDJ - Update Your Bookmarks, Feeds, Etc.

We've switched servers... so, please update your bookmarks, rss feeds, etc.

Bookmark: http://www.thedayjobs.com
RSS Feed: http://www.thedayjobs.com/atom.xml

On June 6, the old server (dangpow.com) will no longer exist. Once that happens, your old feeds and links to old posts will no longer work. You may also find a few broken images on old posts... ignore that... pardon our progress... etc.

We'll post this notice a few more times before the 6th to make sure everyone is on board. Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Tonight In Athens

An all-too-rare appearance by Jonathan Byrd & Dromedary at the Healing Arts Centre happens tonight. As hippie-ish as that place is (you have to take your shoes off to go in!), it's a really great place to see a show. Sometimes, they don't even need mics and you can get a full acoustic show which is a fun thing to see.

On the opposite end of the scale, there's the still up-and-coming ThunderChief at Lunch Paper. You might be thinking, "Don't these guys just get posted here cause the bassist is old friends with the people who run TDJ?" or, "Am I at risk of going to this show and seeing a bunch of drunk gutter punk kids rocking out to half-in-tune songs?" The answer is yes to both, but it doesn't mean they're not entertaining - their drummer has a drum rack! That alone is worth seeing.
