Monday Morning Sound-Off

Anything good to speak of from this past weekend? Any funny stories? Anything at all? Personally, I saw Syriana this weekend, and ate at an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet which I hadn't done in ages. Breakfast buffets rule! I was out of town though, so I'm curious to know if anything interesting went down in Athens this weekend. Discuss...

20 Radiohead YouTube Vids

While it may be dangerous to post two Radiohead-related posts so close together, I thought I should pass along that Earvolution has posted a 20 song live YouTube Radiohead montage. If you're a fan, this is a good way to kill some time at work today. It includes a nice variety of performances ranging from 1994-2006.

Thom Yorke <3 Kelly Clarkson

Here's an interesting mashup w/ Kelly Clarkson and Thom Yorke.

This Weekend In Athens

Gotta make this quick cause I'm leaving for the beach soon... Be back Tuesday. Sorry no links. Except this one.

FRI: Jay Gonzalez (Nutria, former Possibilities) opens things up at the Caledonia before the reduced-phat crew of Je Suis France takes the stage to ... you know, Ham-Jam it up. Balee dat. Mr. Gordon Lamb gets things started, I believe.

However, there's also some solid indie-pop in the form of 63 Crayons (what about them reminds me of the Talking Heads?) at the Watt and some more experimental stuff in the form of the trio of Nettles, Fountain, & Reilly at Farm 255.

Finally, you can catch Dark Meat playing at what is also Ceramic Dvck's last show ever at the Secret Squirrel. Should be loud.

SAT: The Ginger Envelope performs at Little Kings. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any other acts listed there. But they're good. Does this mean a 3 hour set?

Also, Ham 1 and Flash To Bangtime at the Secret Squirrel. Frealz.

Top 4 Reasons to Get Married

This has been an important couple of days. One month from yesterday is the date that my f.w. (future wife) becomes my l.w. (lovely wife).

Also, tonight my f.w. comes home from a 6-week trip in Italy. Needless to say, I'm terribly excited to see her... so I've listed the top 4 reasons for getting married:

4) We no longer have to live in sin. We've only been living together out of wedlock for 4 years, so perhaps we won't be condemned to hell. (I think the cutoff is 6 or 7, right?).
3) We now have something with which to taunt our gay friends. "We can marry and you can't! Ha Ha! USA USA USA!"
2) Women love married guys. Having a ring on your finger is a chick magnet (like walking around with puppies or babies)
1) The honeymoon. Hawaii, watch yer ass! We'll be there in one month!

Tonight In Athens

A scattering of stuff around, much variety... You can see Telenovela at the Caledonia, Vetran at the 40 Watt, or for more experimental stuff, Craig Lieske at Flicker or Erik Hinds (now going by what I'm assuming is his full name: Killick Erik Hinds) over at the Mercury Lounge.

Can you pass 3rd grade?

Here's a fun geography test to pass a few minutes away.

Athens Music

Folks who have the "know-how" to download should consider pulling the bit torrent of this short but great set of Kimberly Morgan's (joined by Wendy Musick of the Everlovin' Band & Southern Bitch). It's from last Friday's show (July 21, 2006) at the Georgia Theatre. Her best vocal performance yet, I'd say. You may also stream the show from Southern Shelter.

And speaking of Southern Shelter, if you haven't checked this week, Sloan Simpson has recent streaming audio from Dark Meat, The Whigs, The Gerbils, and many more. Go get you some.

Pimping Athens Music

You can find double the Athens representation on this website. (Give it a little time to load.) A couple of videos and an interview with the Drive-By Truckers as well as two videos from Vic Chesnutt. Not to mention, a nice domain name.

Tonight In Athens

The great, loud force that is Southern Bitch returns to the stage with their new drummer for one of their increasingly infrequent outings to open for Cowboy Mouth at the Georgia Theatre. Should be loud and awesome and hopefully they'll preview some of the new stuff from their upcoming album Strong Medicine. They rock in spite of the brick-wallin'. In fact, if any band deserves their own brick wall, it's them.

Also, the very impressive math-rock-ish-ness of Cinemechanica can be heard with lots of other folks over at The Secret Squirrel tonight as well. Like I'd said yesterday, they are definitely one of the most impressive bands to see live in this town (in that they're amazingly precise). They're gonna play Popfest and then hit the road for a long time, so you oughta catch 'em soon. Thanks to Jeff for the heads up!

Rope Burn

Sean Rawls, who used to be in Masters of the Hemisphere and has since relocated to San Francisco, has a new band called Still Flyin'. They made a pretty great video for a song called "Rope Burn". Total HammJamm. Check it out:

(Thanks to Hillary for the link!)

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Hey Y'all. Thanks for the lively discussion on Friday and lots of great recs for albums with actual staying power. I'll definitely be picking a few of those up. If you have any recommendations outside the realm of old albums, please drop a line in the comments and let everyone know what's good 'round here. Rock on.

Random Conversation Topic...

...Albums you've had for more than a decade and still enjoy. Try to avoid the obvious classics (i.e. "Blonde on Blonde" or "Rumours" or "Abbey Road" or something like that). This was inspired by my iPod, which has taken it upon itself to have a "classics from my high school years" week.

This Weekend In Athens

Big ups to semi-spontaneous fests!...

FRI: So many bands we like at the Georgia Theatre tonight, it might as well be called "TDJ Fest" (why isn't it?!?). Anyway, you can catch Goat, Nutria, Adam Musick, and Kimberly Morgan - all under one roof. It's even hosted by our friend Pete McBrayer. If you've not caught most or all of these acts before, it's a very good opportunity to see 'em all for cheap. Lots more going on there as well. More here.

If that's not your speed, there's something more experimental with Garbage Island over at the Caledonia (get your fix now folks, seriously), and there's the new Friday night Hip-Hop show over at Tasty World hosted by Ishues.

SAT: Big times to be had outside the clubs... Firstly, there's the Next To Last Fest happening on a private property up by the mall area for most of the afternoon/night. Acts include Summer Hymns, Phosphorescent, The Low Lows, and more. Directions, times, instructions, details of further goings ons, complete bandlisting, etc. can be found here and some more stuff here.

At night, if you're not going to be there, The Secret Squirrel is playing host to former GBV member Doug Gillard, believe it or not. It's gonna cost ya' more than your average house party I'm sure, but The Late BP Helium and M-Coast open, so you'll get a good night of music out of it, I'm sure. In fact, I'll guarantee it because Mr. Helium himself wrote us with (amongst other things), the following:
the b.p. band will feature b.p. (of course), aaron wegelin, neil golden and.. frank mcdonnell(!).
(!) totally sums up our McD obsession. They guy freakin' karate kicks it! Thanks for the heads up, BP!

There's also some great stuff in the clubs like the ever-playing Music Hates You at the Caledonia with Polemic or Nic Goodson & Craig Lieske at Flicker. So, take your pick.

Anything to Keep A Beer Cold

Truly helping humanity, some folks took on this classic experiment to determine which beer cozy does its job the best. I must say, there are some inventive ideas within. If only I would have come up with this idea in 5th grade science class...instead, I think I did "which candy bar melts the quickest?"

The bottom of that page also contains other fascinating age-old questions of life, such as "What is the Ultimate Jello-Shot?", "Does Viagra Keep Flowers from Wilting?", and "How Many Condoms Can You Wear at Once?" While the questions may not haunt you everyday, it certainly is nice to settle on an answer once and for all.

TDJ Critical Darlings Now P'Fork Critical Darlings

In a recent review, Pitchfork provided the following list of bands who have recently done covers albums:
Cobra Verde, Xiu Xiu, Crooked Fingers, Bob Dylan, Guns n' Roses, Will Oldham, Cat Power, the Autumns, Yo La Tengo, Alasdair Roberts, Duran Duran, Paul Anka, Metallica, the Soft Pink Truth, Rage Against The Machine, Golden Smog, Los Lobos, Fairburn Royals, Ivy, Everything But the Girl, Neko Case, Dave Pajo, Guster, Twilight Singers, and David Bowie.
How strange is that? When Royals' bassist Dave Kinkaid was recently "reached for comment" (read: sent the smartass e-mail forward, "Which one doesn't belong?"), he replied:
Yeah, that's weird; get off our list, Paul Anka! I'm totally cool with using the Royals as a reference point in music reviews. How informed can your opinions be if you don't know the Royals?
Very true indeed, Dave. I always just figured it was only some TDJers that knew that. Guess I was wrong. Anyways, enough in-group indulgence. As always, you can get the now-hip Fairburn Royals' Covers EP here for free.

Tonight On Your TV

From Will Kiser & The Folks at Nuci's Space:
On WAGA-TV, the 5:00 News is doing a short piece on Nuci's Space. We're not sure when during the hour it will air but it could be around 5:30 pm. Sparks!
Cool. I'm glad anytime Nuci's gets more promo.

Tonight In Athens

The hard-rockin' sounds of Bloodkin can be heard at the 40 Watt tonight. It's a rare chance to catch the band out of their usual places-that-start-with-"Georgia" element. Besides that, hopefully it'll be what they do best (no, not that... the rock thing).

Also in the cool venue category: Brown Frown and Sleepy Horses both perform tonight at The Roadhouse. That's right: you can get your face rocked off then go next door for pizza. Or, you could go catch 63 Crayons and others over at The Secret Squirrel.

Primarily Over

Well, despite all the campaigning by Smoltzie, Ralph didn't get the nod for Lt. Governor. You can keep up with him, McKinney, and the bunch over at the Secretary of State's election results page. I'm surprised that page didn't have a frowny face emoticon somewhere on it. More with Hillary and I'm sure the Athens Politics folks'll have something up soon too..

Tonight In Athens

Singer/Songwriter/FanOfBlackClothing Liz Durrett will be performing at the Caledonia tonight. I think most folks have heard her sing by now, but if not, you oughta take a listen. Like Cat Power but sane and able to perform on a regular basis. Very impressive.

Southern Shelter

Just a reminder that Southern Shelter has recent Athens music streaming (and also for download). With just a few months into the project, Sloan's already been getting hits from all over the world. Latest posts include the Gerbils from this past weekend, Liz Durrett, Ben Mize, and comedian Pete McBrayer. Good way to pass the time at work and perhaps discover something new!

Monday Morning Sound-Off

What'd y'all do this past week? Anything great? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know how it all went. Personally, I made my best impulse purchase ever: a monkey poster. Pretty great right? I mean, if you can't actually have a monkey.

PS Anyone else going to see Costello tonight?

Trade Smoltz

I'm officially requesting that the Braves trade Smoltz. For one thing, he's old. For another, we can free up his contract money and get a couple of young bullpen pitchers (or a leadoff man).

Most importantly, he's started actively campaigning for Ralph Reed. My aunt got a pre-recorded phone call saying something to the effect of "Hi, this is John Smoltz calling on behalf of Ralph Reed... blah blah blah... Jesus... blah blah blah... good Christian.... blah blah blah... uses Indians and old black people... blah blah blah."

Now, I don't mind when my favorite athletes disagree with my politics. But to actively campaign for Ralph Reed... yikes. That's going too far.

Trade his ass.

DBT On NPR This Weekend

Since two folks e-mailed me about it, thought I'd post this bit about a full broadcast of a Truckers show on NPR this coming weekend. Since Lars is on staff there, I'll use his e-mail:
The Drive-By Truckers will be featured on NPR's "Live Concert Series" this Saturday, July 15th. The show will be webcast live from NPR.org via direct a mixed soundboard + stage mic feed at 11PM EST. All Songs Considered producer Robin Hilton and I, the intern, will moderate a live chat on instant messenger ("allsongslive") for those who can't be there in the flesh. While I was weary of the chat room idea for the series, they've actually turned out be fun (sometimes even more so than the band onstage) since the rabid fans turns out for it (I expect nothing less of DBT folks).

The show will be archived as streaming audio and, later, as a podcast.
Thanks for the heads up Lars and Chris!

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: Fresh of their ass-kicking AthFest show (though I'm sure they've played 20 shows since), it looks like Music Hates You has finally arranged a CD release show and were kind enough to have it at (and as a benefit for) Nuci's Space. The album, if you didn't know by now, is called Send More Paramedics and it's loud and heavy and raucous and in-your-face and great. But not as great as their live shows, so you oughta go get there (this is not an insult to the album, but a compliment to the shows themselves). Hopefully the money they raise will offset the damage they cause. Show starts at 9PM, supposedly. More here.

For something a great deal more peaceful and melodic, it's hard to beat the combo of Venice Is Sinking, Folklore, & Summer Hymns at the 40 Watt. Three great bands that I'd have to imagine go great together. And of course if that's not your speed, there's always The Low Lows at the Caledonia or the more experimental sounds of Diet Rockstar at the Mercury Lounge.

Note: Flyers for two different nights, but they looked good side by side so I just put 'em both here.

SAT: Another killer combo tonight, this time featuring Dark Meat, The Gerbils, and The Instruments at the 40 Watt. All that must mean one thing: Heather McIntosh must be in town. Actually, when I saw Dark Meat at AthFest, they reminded me of the heavier Gerbils stuff, so I'm glad they're playing together. Too much of a good thing? Who knows.

Want softer? Try Peter Alvanos (of Fabulous Bird) flying solo at Amici of all places. Louder? Our drunk friends in Thunderchief will crank the volume up at the Lunch Paper.

Attention Music Nerds: Overrated Book On Sale

I didn't even know that our friend Henry and all the other delinquents over at Chunklet had a book on sale. Then again, I don't feel so bad because apparently Chunklet's webpage doesn't know about it either.

It's called The Overrated Book and features stuff from those folks as well as Patton Oswalt and a load of other funny comedians whose websites I'm too lazy to find and link to so I won't name them specifically. Bound to be very funny to in-the-know music nerds everywhere.

New Live DBT

New West uploaded a live video of Jason Isbell's new song, "Dress Blues". It's surprisingly well-shot with great audio and the song is sad but wonderful. Neil Young even linked to it from his website.

Tonight In Athens

Neal Fountain's new project, appropriately titled "Neal Fountain's Babylon Mining Co.", performs at the Mercury Lounge tonight. I have absolutely no idea how they sound or who's in the group, but if Neal's involved, it's bound to be good. That's guy is without a doubt one of the most talented and versatile musicians in town. If a little crazy.

TBS Sells Soul, Betrays Georgians

How's that for a headline?

Major League Baseball has announced that TBS will begin televising playoff games beginning next season. Sounds great, right? Not exactly:

Turner Broadcasting System also will televise 26 regular-season Sunday games in 2008 while eventually cutting back on its nationwide Atlanta Braves coverage... TBS will show 70 Braves games nationally next year, then 45 per season locally through 2013.

Arghh... so what am I supposed to do for Braves games after next year? Move back to Georgia? Get an expensive cable television package? Watch online?

Also, there's this:

[Turner Sports president David] Levy said it was too early to speculate which announcers TBS might want for its national games.

Hey David! Keeps your hands off Carey, Carey, Simpson, Sutton, and Van Wiren.

New Southern Bitch Tunes

Southern Bitch posted new songs on their MySpace page recently:
Hey Everyone,

Just letting you all know that we put up 2 new tracks from our upcoming cd "Strong Medicine" which drops nationally on Oct. 3rd. You'll be able to pre-order the cd by the first of Sept. so stay tuned for details. We hope you like the new tracks and we look forward to your comments. Thanks for all of the support.

Rock on!
Southern Bitch
Rock on indeed.

Tonight In Athens

Southern Bitch's Adam Musick performs his solo material tonight at Tasty World. Aside from the new Southern Bitch album, he's got one of his own coming out soon as well. Great catchy songs, often piano-based, and definitely a little softer than his band's stuff.

Also, Still Small Voice & The Joyful Noise performs at the Caledonia.

Tonight In Athens

Hope For Agoldensummer and Tin Cup Prophette perform at the State Botanical Gardens for the second installment of their Sunflower Music Series. Those're the outdoor lawn concerts there. Given good weather, they tend to be a lot of fun in a fairly low-key setting. I'm tellin' y'all: good for dates (unless, in this case, your date is scared of people who make their own soap). Starts at 7 PM, and I'd highly recommend getting tix in advance, cause it usually sells out before start time:
Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members and $5 for children ages 6-12. Tickets are available at the Garden Gift Shop, Schoolkids Records, AthensMusic.net or by calling Connie at 706-542-6014. (FRIENDS discount is available only through the Garden.)

Wine, beer, sodas and water are included with ticket purchase (must be 21 to be served alcohol), but guests are encouraged to bring a picnic and blanket. Al fresco picnics may be purchased at Cafe Trumps at the Garden (for more information please call 706-542-6359). No lawn chairs allowed...

New Orleans Still Needs You

Have any books you can spare?

The New Orleans Public Library is asking for any and all hardcover and paperback books to restock the shelves after Katrina. The library staff will assess which titles will be designated for the shelves. The rest will be distributed to destitute families or sold for library fundraising. The books can be sent to:

Rica A. Trigs, Public Relations
New Orleans Public Library
219 Loyola Avenue
New Orleans, LA 70112-2007

If you tell the post office that the books are for the library in New Orleans, they will give you the library rate that is less than book rate. Good way to clean out those books you won't read again and you can write the donation off your taxes.

Please spread the word! It is a great opportunity to help. If you don't have books, they have a fund for donations.

Pickle-Phobia???

Here's a funny video about a girl afraid of pickles. I didn't know anyone had such a phobia. (Requires IE to view.)

Tonight In Athens

Those lovable scamps in Brown Frown take the Monday night stage again at the Caledonia to bring the rock to weary crowds. I recently got a sample of their new material and the album, Courage To The Gap, is going to be amazing. They've even revealed a "softer" side. Look for it this fall.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Sorry I'm a bit late with this, y'all. Late night and long weekend. If you've got some time at work, give us a shout-out and let us know what's going on that's worth doing. And to everyone who went - how was that show on Friday at the Watt? Rock on.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: You couldn't ask for a better replacement bill to cover for the cancelled Vic Chesnut / Elf Power combo that the one at the 40 Watt tonight featuring Producto (fresh off their brilliant performance at AthFest) and The Mendoza Line. That's pretty much an unbeatable combo and if you throw guitarist extraordinaire Philip McArdle in the mix (pulling double-duty), what a time (plus I totally love that that one dude is rocking the Gene Shalit mustache!). If you've never seen either of these bands, you owe it to yourself to go check 'em out. More here.

Of course, if that's not your speed, checking out Bloodkin's return to the Georgia Theatre isn't a bad idea either.

SAT: Ham 1 and the increasingly-rarely performing The Good Ship take the stage at the Caledonia for some good pop - if downbeat at times. That's another good combo show that's definitely worth your time out. More here.

But again, if that's not your speed, then Bo Bedingfield will be performing at Flicker around 8:30 PM. You could actually probably catch both.

Kickin' It Old School

Entertain yourself with Frogger!

Fun With CNN Typos

Granted, not always the best source of information.

Fabio's Kitchen

Thanks to Hillary for sending over the this amazing link that lets you explore the world as seen through Fabio. In his kitchen. A fast connection is nice to have, but the comedy is there at any speed. Is this really a promo for ICBINB? All I know is that if I don't get a Fabio-Gram or a magnetic poetry reading at some point, I'm going to be disappointed.

WUOG Wants Your Opinions

In response to the ongoing discussions here and other places in the last several days or so, WUOG GM Erin has established a comments board where people can share their critiques and praises of WUOG in a forum that will be monitored by people who can actually respond to it. It's your chance to have your voice heard whether it be negative or positive to help shape WUOG. You can even remain anonymous if you'd like.

I hope lotsa y'all will take advantage of this and I hope that everyone will keep it decent. Also, remember: a complaint from one person could just be personal taste. Lots of people with the same complaint could indicate a real issue, so speak up if you want change (you can still continue discussions here if you'd like - but they won't have the same impact, I'm sure).

And thanks to Erin for the very quick and positive response to sometimes tense discussion!

TDJ Exclusive: Jeff Mangum Plays Outer Space!

Mangum (4th from Left) and his fellow astronauts at the final press conference before lift-off (Click image for larger picture).

Well, Jeff Mangum might not be making any announcements about his future, but that doesn't mean he's taking it easy. Shortly after Space Shuttle Discovery achieved orbit yesterday, word had it that Jeff Mangum unpacked his acoustic guitar and wowed the seven-member audience with an entire set of new material, plus an encore featuring "Naomi" and "Holland 1945".

Luckily the shuttle's pilot, Mark Kelly, is a TDJer from way back and hooked us up with an interview over the space-phone or whatever they use (we used Vonage). Here it is, presented uncut (as best I could transcribe it):

TDJ: Hey Jeff, thanks for talking on such a big occasion.
JM: No problem, over.

TDJ: So was this just a spur of the moment thing or what?
JM: I mean, yes and no. I'd been wanting to do some field recordings in space, you know. Really try and capture something a lot people don't hear. Didn't really turn out like I'd hoped, but probably Orange Twin might release them in the fall, over.

TDJ: When did you decide to play this show?
JM: [Mission Specialist] Mike [Fossum] is a friend of mine from a while ago. We'd always talked about getting together to do something. So, it was just like the time was right and all ... over.

TDJ: Does this mean there's going to be a new Neutral Milk Hotel album anytime soon?
JM: No comment, over.

TDJ:
How was being floated?
JM: Bad joke. Please don't make those anymore, over.

TDJ: Okay, cool. Well, how's the experience up there so far?
JM: Kind of lame, to tell you the truth. I was hoping to get away a bit and get some inspiration. But this guy [Commander] Steve [Lindsey] keeps asking me all these questions about what all the Anne Frank references are about and how they relate to life and trying to get me explain "Two-Headed Boy" and asking if the new stuff's gonna have the same sound and all. It's really kind of creeping me out, to tell you the truth. And out of nowhere one of the other guys - I don't even know his name - just walks up and asks me to sign some old Synthetic Flying Machine cassette he had. It's like I thought we were in space, you know? ... Over.

TDJ: You can actually stop saying "over" if you want to.
JM: No, over.

TDJ: It's really kind of annoying.
JM: Sucks to be you, over.

TDJ: What?
JM: (about a 20 seconds of silence here when we thought we'd lost connection) ... Over.

TDJ: Very funny.
JM: Look, I've got to go. Someone just opened a fresh case of Tang and if I don't get to it soon, [Mission Specialist] Lisa [Nowak] is going to drink it all. Over.

TDJ:
Okay, well, thanks!
JM: (No response.)

Well y'all, wish we had more, but that's all we got from him. It was a pretty special moment and just seemed to add to the mystery that is Mangum. He sure is a mysterious guy. Stay tuned here to see what he's up to next!

Tonight And Tomorrow Night In Athens

Tonight: The big, drunk sounds of Thunderchief rock the Tasty World. It's quite drinkable music on a pre-Fourth night. Enjoy with the disclaimer that it involves friends of people who run this site.

The 4th: Here's the skinny on fireworks (9:30, Bishop Park). Live it up y'all!

Also, Mouser, Telenovela, and Danielson (Dan Smith and a number of his Danielson Famile members) perform at the 40 Watt. More here.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

How's y'all's July 4th break action going so far? Do anything great this holiday? Doing anything great tomorrow? Let us know where to get the best seats for fireworks or how to grill the best burger or something. Cause if someone's gonna screw something up, it's gonna be me. Happy 4th, Y'all!

Power to the People

I'm sure many of you have stumbled upon this MySpace page, entitled WUOG, Please Stop Sucking. If you read the comments on Mailclerk's AthFest post last week, you'll remember there was some debate over what many feel has been the steady decline of quality at WUOG. Take a look at the below petition (care of WUOGPSS), and if you agree, please feel free to sign it at the MySpace site. If you don't agree, please feel free to elaborate in the comments - we love it when people comment. (Disclaimer: TheDayjobs didn't create WUOGPSS's page, although we do endorse the effort.)

WUOG: Please Stop Sucking

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that WUOG 90.5 FM, the student radio station at the University of Georgia, please take immediate measures to stop sucking. In a town world-famous for its music scene, there is no excuse for a radio station to have declined as badly as WUOG has in recent years. Below is a list of recommendation we as listeners, musicians, club-goers, and club-owners would like for the stations staff, faculty advisor and on-air personalities to consider and implement as soon as possible:

1. Please stop the dead air. It takes eight three-hour shifts to fill up a 24 hour broadcast day. How hard is that?

2. An aggressive effort needs to be made to recruit more diverse, more enthusiastic and more eclectic on-air talent. This will go a long way towards remedying item ..1.

3. PSAs should actually be about something. Public Service Announcements are a means of preserving the stations non- profit status and serve the additional purpose of being a service to the community. In recent years WUOGs PSAs have devolved into low comedy, serving virtually no purpose other than as a vehicle for inside jokes. More PSAs that are actually a service to the public and less stupid jokes. Example: More about Nuci's Space and less about chocolate milk.

4. Back announce! This is the only public exposure some bands/musicians ever get. Tell the people what they just heard so they can go buy the music.

5. Less "Um" and "Uh" and more music. Try training On Air staff for this.

6. Bring back the top-notch specialty shows. Having trouble staffing them? Try using local musicians for hosts. Greg Reece was the best Dirt Roads and Honky Tonks host ever. More of that, please. Also, what happened to the Modern Orchestral Music show? The World Music Show? The Folk Show? The Blues Show? The Reggae Show?

7. More local music in regular rotation. Athens Music is hugely popular on college radio stations all over the country. Why not here?

8. That April Fools Day thing where you pretend to change the format to Musical Theater and commercial alternative (or classic rock or whatever)? Thats so stupid. Quit it.

9. Finally, while no one expects college radio to be as professional as commercial radio, it would be nice if it didnt suck. Please, stop sucking.
