Tonight In Athens

A cool instrumental show tonight at Flicker. First, Kyle Dawkins performs songs from his newest release Walls Become The World, which is a cool mix of folk guitar and with electronic elements. Then, Jay Gonzalez (of Nutria and formerly of The Possibilities) performs as part of his instrumental project The Inflatable Orchestra - who I haven't heard but Jay says:
it'll just be me playing twangy electric and open tuning acoustic guitars to pre-recorded tracks of mellotron orchestras mixed with rock bass and drums and the odd steel drum here and there....the one thing i've noticed about instrumental music these days is that it goes on too long for my taste and it's mostly sounds and texture...i'm into the rock and pop and movie theme instrumentals of the 50's -70's where it's like a pop song w/o vox... i may also have some video stuff going on since it IS at the flicker and all...
All stars around 8:30. Also, for something louder and with vocals, Bloodkin's just down the street at the 40 Watt.

Athens Music in Pictures

I'm sure most of you probably know about this website already, but in case you don't, I just ran across this great photo site that covers lots of Athens music. Check it out!

Tonight In Athens

Bo Bedingfield & The Wydelles, Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads, and Clay Leverett bring a distinctive Southern tone to the 40 Watt tonight. It's an alt-country fiesta. Great songwriters among those folks too. Great drinkers to boot.

Before that, Tin Cup Prophette performs at Flicker as a warmup show for some Celtic Festival they're/she's playing. Expect Celtic tunes amongst originals.

Happy Birthday, RoboDave!

I had no idea until I just read the comments that today is Robo's birthday! Yes, he was born. To natural robot parents. Many years ago. And grew up in a poet. Happy Birthday, Robo. Live it up!

Tonight In Athens

Brown Frown brings loud, drunk new material to the Caledonia. In contrast to what I said a while back, the upcoming LP Courage To The Gap is not yet sequenced or off being printed, but it is recorded and those recordings, from what I've heard, sound awesome. I can't wait to hear the final product. Till then, they'll be playing that material live.

Tonight In Athens

Some folks think Albini ruins albums, some thinks he saves them, but whatever your taste, his band Shellac will be playing (loudly, no doubt) at the 40 Watt tonight and is definitely worth seeing. More here.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Hey Y'all. How was your week? Drop us a line and let us know what's going on that's good that's local that's worth checking out and hopefully doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

This Weekend In Athens

Going to the chapel...

Remember these kids?
FRI: I Am The World Trade Center plays what maybe their final show at the 40 Watt tonight. Amy's moving to Oregon, it would appear. It's weird cause I was just wondering if they were broken up cause I hadn't seen 'em playing in a while. Anyway, they're gonna. Maserati opens, which also makes me wonder what's gonna happen to them cause last I heard, Steve and Amy were engaged. Anyone got the gossip (cause I'm always outta the loop)? More here.

Also of interested, the Caledonia's going hip-hop all weekend. Tonight's show features Ishues and a few others and is billed as the "Back To School Hip-Hop Bash" or something like that. I just think it's a good thing that local hip-hop's making it's way down to that area of town.

SAT: Congratulations CS & SARAH!!! The man who founded this site the love of his life do that whole holy matrimony thing. Senoia's gonna be bouncin'! Balee dat.

In Athens, there's the "Aux Collaborative Arts Event". I don't know much about it, except that it's a buncha experimental bands with many E6 affiliations. But if you go to their website, I"m sure you'll learn a lot if that's your thing.

Also, local hip-hop act The Renegadez perform at the Caledonia.

Oh, and a little band called Whild Peach will be playing with the Dictatortots at Tasty World. Anyone who has ever liked Southern hip-hop needs to check them out. Trust me on this. We've given good strong suggestions in the past; don't ask questions. Oh, and bring us back pics, damnit.

SUN: The nationally-syndicated "Mountain Stage" show tapes at UGA's Hodgson Hall tonight featuring Vic Chesnutt, Tin Cup Prophette, and more. More here.

Before that, of course, Elf Power is playing out at Orange Twin in a special taping of the kids' show "Pancake Mountain". I think you have to contact them for info and you prolly shouldn't go if you don't have kids with you (don't wanna look creepy). Still, should be a fun show. More here.

Tonight In Athens

Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise perform at the Caledonia and also there's another performance at the Georgia Theatre by another band with even more people - the people of Hope For Agoldensummer. Good stuff.

Know When To Fly

Someone forwarded me a link to a new(ish?) site called Farecast which uses stats and whatnot about the various airlines to try and tell you whether it's better to wait or to buy your tickets now (whether rates are rising or dropping). Also tells you where to get your flights cheapest. Useful if you fly a lot, I'm sure.

Tonight In Athens

It's a festival of loud at the 40 Watt tonight with a triple bill involving Music Hates You and The Dumps. What more can we really say at this point about both of these loud and constantly-playing bands? They're good.

All Athens Considered

We don't hit up the e-mail as much as we should, so in digging around amongst the hundreds of junk mails from the last few weeks, I found this from Lars (formerly of WUOG):
I guest host on this week's episode of All Songs Considered. In the interview, I give mad props to Athens, the DIY punk scene, the Elephant 6 collective, and WUOG. Unfortunately, I didn't think to bring any Athens-related CDs to the studio when we recorded the show. Damn.
Well, we didn't get there in time to hype it beforehand, but the show is archived (Aug. 10th show) here.

There's also a live DBT performance that can be found here. ATH Represent.

Tonight In Athens

The Harvey Milk DVD Anthem - possibly the year's most awesome DVD - is released today, and there's a premier screening at the 40 Watt tonight to celebrate it, starting at 8PM. Need more convincing?:

Or you can check out what Sloan's got to say about it and download a full show from last year's reunion tour while you're at it.

Elf Power Wants Your Children

From the Elf Power camp via Chris:
Right before heading out on tour, Elf Power is filming a set for the indie kids' show Pancake Mountain. Produced in Washington, DC, the show is a collection of curious bits, skits and musical performances. Elf Power's inviting all music-minded Athenians with younger children out to the Orange Twin community on Sunday, August 27 for a taping of a performance geared towards kids. For details, times and directions, contact Elf Power through its MySpace page.
Really, for the parents who haven't heard them, they're not as menacing as they look. Really nice folks who play catchy tunes. I just thought that pic went with the title well.

Tonight In Athens

Nic Goodson (of Sleepy Horses) performs a solo set at Flicker tonight. Can't imagine Sleepy Horses' material without feedback, so should be an interesting show to catch. Also, for something louder and more electronic, Pegasuses-XL perform at the Caledonia.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Hey Y'all... How was the weekend? Do anything cool in the last week or so? Got any good tips on new restaurants or bands or anything? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know.

This Weekend In Athens

School's in...

FRI: Casper & The Cookies and Britain's own Keith John Adams will be giving us one last blast of pop in the post-fest time over at Little Kings tonight as Casper and The Cookies release their new CD, The Optomist's Club. Last time I saw Casper et al, they were the best I've ever seen 'em. They improve each time. If you were at Popfest, you likely saw KJA play like 800 times on every street corner he could find - gotta admire the enthusiasm. Anyway, the show is free and will have actual cookies there to eat.

There's also the Low Lows over at the Go Bar, Classic City Hip-Hop over at Tasty World, and for something truly experimental, check out Craig Lieske and Mark Kaczmarek over at Flicker (one of these days Craig is going to write a sweet catchy pop song with hooks and choruses and surprise the hell out everyone).

SAT: Holy crap, here we go... Firstly, there's the big Joe Strummer Tribute Night over at the Caledonia. It's got GOAT, Ham 1, and a buncha other acts including some supergroups comprised of folks from Ceiling Fan, Hayride, The Sunshine Fix, and The Starroom Boys - all playing Clash/Strummer covers. How cool is that? Glad our friend Dave Gerow got this thing together. And it's for a good cause!

Of course, our friends Kimberly & Brad Morgan perform over at Little Kings as well. It's good, ole-fashioned country and with catchy lyrics and wonderful vocals. Well worth your time, even if you don't listen to country often. Also on the country tip, you can go catch Clay Leverett over at Oasis as well.

Folks who like it loud aren't left out either as the great triple-bill of Music Hates You, The Dumps, and Garbage Island play at the Lunch Paper. I promise you loud. And surprisingly talented to boot. Once again, I know a lot of people who wouldn't consider themselves metalheads who like at least one of these bands.

Pop fans don't go hungry either as the neo-Australian sounds of Of Montreal take over the 40 Watt. And they've got a great opening act as well in The Minders. I saw them play the Watt a Popfest or two ago and they were fantastic. Worth the cost alone.

Finally, if you just want to go dance and blow off some steam, there's a triple-DJ dance party/benefit over at Nuci's Space featuring the Krush Girls, Twin Powers, and DJ Mahogany. All for once price.

Whatever you like, it looks like Saturday's got something for you.

Fresh Brown Frown

The fat hairy bastards in Brown Frown (I can say that because we're friends and friends tell the truth) have completed their debut LP, Courage To The Gap - which is probably the album I'm looking most forward to this year. It's off to the presses, I believe.

In the meantime, you can hear 3 tracks from it on their myspace page. Two of which are nice and loud and awesome just the way you'd expect while the third is a very soft song which will probably surprise most folks... but it's really great as well and comes with a bonus picture to match its title. Enjoy.

Treadmill Rock

A friend of mine sent me this awesome music vid by OK Go. Usually when I see something this great in an e-mail forward, I assume everyone else has already seen it, but in case you haven't seen it (in a while), here it is:

Tonight In Athens

Man, I forgot how busy things get when students are around... Tonight you can catch the 800 member band Dark Meat at the 40 Watt along with Madeline and several others, or go down the Caledonia and see the Sleepy Horses, which are like alt-country with extended heavy jam things happening - very good. Mother Jackson's there too in case your ear drums still work. For something softer, you can catch Peter Alvanos (of Fabulous Bird) playing solo at the Mercury Lounge.

Public Appreciation

TDJ's beloved taper is profiled in this week's issue of Flagpole. Go Sloan! In case we don't say it enough, we appreciate all that you do for our music community!

His site, Southern Shelter (which has been getting hits from all over the world) features music this week from the 2006 Popfest as well as the Team Clermont Summer Fest, including bands Iron Hero and Circulatory System. I'm sure there are more to come so check back often.

Two Things That Are Good

Vet Pharmacist and I agree...

1) Talladega Nights.

2) Mama's Boy (except for the salads - they're way bland). Falls somewhere between Five Star and Last Resort, with the decor of Clocked. Highly recommend the Fried Chicken. Hillary's thoughts here.

Tonight In Athens

Finally, finally, finally The Drams (the new band by Slobberbone frontman Brent Best) come to Athens... On a friggin' school night! (Man, I'm old.) It's a y'allternative explosion at Tasty World with Lake City and Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads opening up. Man, that's gonna be a good show.

For a more poppy outing, you couldn't lose watching Murder Beach, the new electro-ish outfit Ghost Dad The Robot, and The Winter Sounds at the 40 Watt either.

I Like Ike

This past weekend, I saw the documentary Why We Fight, which was a good (if a bit broad) examination of what has become of the "Military-Industrial(-Congressional) Complex" that Eisenhower warned about in his famed farewell address. It's a fairly solid doc, with an even better commentary, but the real kicker for me was what an amazing person Eisenhower really was.

He might've been the supposed "do-nothing president" (a partial misnomer it seems, but somewhat accurate given the cultural revolutions that followed him - history buffs please feel free to correct), but what a vision he had. I mean, for a five-star general to give a speech like this (see the part in bold) is incredible. The fact that those speeches echo so strongly today is a testament to his vision. Why don't politicians talk like this anymore?

Anyway, sorry to get heavy on a Tuesday morning, but it was impressive to me. Might put other folks to sleep.

Tonight In Athens

Twas the night before classes... And the Instruments and Folklore are playing the Caledonia. Good combo to pop-rock the place. Before that, you can hear The Dumps on WUOG's "Live Fast Rules" at 10 PM. It's loud.

Let's Pretend This Doesn't Exist

You know the lavish life of emerging rock superstars, right? Fame, fortune, all the bloomin' onions and wallaby darneds your heart desires...

While Vet Pharmacist and I were in the drive-thru line at a South Carolina Zaxby's, a commercial with a familiar catchy tune came on the radio. Sure enough, the tune itself was Of Montreal's "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games" (you know, "Let's pretend we don't exist..."), but the lyrics were hocking Outback Steakhouse. No shit.

I went and looked Googled it only to find this post indicating that this isn't the first venture into ad music for the Montrealians. Very strange. Now, I don't wanna start a big debate about the rights and wrongs of selling your art for advertising purposes, but if anyone finds the audio, please send us the link! (Maybe it'll be on their remix CD.)

UPDATE: Don't wanna be accused of stealing stories, as it turns out Hillary beat us to this story, posting over the weekend. But we don't work on weekends and are very lazy. Also, really, I meant what I said. Let's not have this debate. It's just a funny story.

Tonight In Athens

William Tonks and friends perform at the Georgia Bar tonight. It's part of a bigger night of music centering around a CD release show. More here about that.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Welcome back, students! To everyone else, hope you got some chores done and ate at Five Star for lunch and other things you can't do as easily when students are around. If you've been gone for a while, let us know what you did this summer that's worth a trip. If you've hung around, what'd you do in the last week or so that's been great? Let us know so we can keep having fun as summer fades.

In The Interest Of Truth...

Just wanted to say up front, should our credibility ever be questioned, that as of yesterday, for the first time in the history of this site, I am no longer mailclerking in any fashion. To avoid confusion, I will not change my handle to "Grad Assistant" or anything (though everyone else's does actually reflect what they do). But that's what I'm doing now. I will also not be drinking at the Globe all the time either.

Hope I'm not giving up any blue collar cred.

This Weekend In Athens

Popfestivus...

FRI: Tonight's Popfest line-up:
Little Kings
3:00pm The Passerines
3:45pm The Bicycles
4:15pm Ryan Anderson
5:00pm So L'il
5:45pm 63 Crayons

40 Watt Club
8:30pm Mouser
9:00pm Keith John Adams
9:30pm Casper & The Cookies
10:15pm Cinemechanica
11:15pm Poison Control Center
12:00am We Vs. The Shark
1:00am Deerhoof

(Bank links here.)
Also of interest... I feel like I've neglected the "Classic City Hip-Hop" nights at Tasty World a bit more than I should've. I mean, Ishues hosts, which is a plus. Plus, tonight's show features Big Earl, who despite the name is one of the better rappers in and around Athens, so it definitely deserves some good press. I'd like to see the ATH's hip-hop scene grow. A lot.

There's also the Dromedary Acoustic Quartet at the Melting Point for world-ish music fans, The Ginger Envelope at Flicker for something lower key than Popfest but uptempo from Dromedary, and the new lineup of the Savoir Faire at Go Bar, who's probably a bit louder than those.

SAT: Ye Olde Popfest line-up:
Little Kings
3:00pm The Cocker Spaniels
3:30pm Pegasuses
4:15pm Astronomy Club
5:00pm The Happy Bullets
5:45pm Telenovela

40 Watt Club
8:30pm Red Pony Clock
9:15pm Fishboy
10:00pm The High Water Marks
10:45pm Ideal Free Distribution
11:30pm Bunnygrunt
12:15am The Circulatory System
1:00am The Apples In Stereo

(After-Party's at the Squirrel. Band links here.)
For more straight-ahead rock there's Drivin' N' Cryin' over at the Georgia Theatre and for something softer, you can catch both a Jesse Flavin solo show AND a full show by The Good Ship over at Flicker.

SUN: The Secret Squirrel hosts the much-talked-about-but-rarely-seen Titans of Filth. Supposedly a harsh name for a really catchy band. Their MySpace seems to reflect that, but obviously I've never seen 'em live. There's other bands too.

Tonight In Athens

Popfest keeps on a' rollin, but now at 2 different locations:

10:00pm M Coast
10:45pm The Gazetteers
11:30pm The Love Letter Band
12:15am Oh-Ok
1:00am The Mountain Goats

(All band links here.)
Also of note, TDJ friends Mark Brut and Meghann Jordan perform at Flicker at or about 8:30 PM. Acoustic singer-songwriter stuff, but we think it's better than your average acoustic singer-songwriter stuff.

Popfest Reviews

AMdC has posted a brief review of Popfest and some pictures from night 1.

Paste's Band of the Week

Local songwriter Liz Durrett was named Paste Magazine's Band of the Week yesterday. The article also includes some tidbits on her next cd. Congrats Liz!

The Men Behind the Knobs

So this is a couple of months old, but I had overlooked it until yesterday. Here's an article on Athens' producer/engineer/musician David Barbe (and more specifically, his work with the Drive-By Truckers).

Speaking of knobs, don't forget to stop by Southern Shelter to hear the most recent Elf Power show from the weekend, including the cover set, along with other recent additions from B.P. Helium (and guests), Barbara Cue, Japancakes and Mendozza Line.

Tonight In Athens

Popfest continues again this afternoon and tonight at Little Kings. Here's the schedule:
3:00pm Joe Sidney
3:45pm The Specific Heats
4:30pm My Parents
5:15pm Velcro Stars
6:00pm *** intermission ***
7:30pm Gift Machine
8:00pm Baby Calendar
8:45pm Flash To Bang Time

11:00pm So Many Dynamos
11:45pm The Instruments

Jerk Hotline

The Cincinatti Bengals have created a "Jerk Hotline" that fans can use to report jerks sitting near them. Boy, this is needed at the 40 Watt. All 40 Watt "jerk calls" could be reported to Legal Bitch... she'd whoop ass.

Tonight In Athens

It's Popfest time again, y'all! The fest officially kicks off tonight at Little Kings at 8PM. The show is free and features a lot of great acts. Here's the lineup (which is the most Athens-centric of the whole fest):
8:00pm Gordon Lamb
8:45pm Fabulous Bird
9:30pm Vietnam
10:15pm Russian Spy Camera
11:00pm Sleepy Horses
11:45pm The Visitations
12:30am Summer Hymns
1:15am Col. Knowledge & The Lickety Splits
Of course, the festival continues through this coming weekend. Here's the full schedule and where to get tix. It's always a blast. All other links here.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Have any tales from the weekend? Anything good to speak of? Anything that didn't meet your expectations? Lay it on us. We need to be entertained.

What about that storm on Saturday? Yowsers.

Gardner On Strike

Gardner Linn, curator of the Gardner Linn Fan Club and a major inspiration in the creation of TDJ, is on strike... from his dayjob. He's a writer on America's Next Top Model. Most people probably aren't shocked that reality shows have writers, but they do (for the better ones, they just craft a story out of tons of material, for the worse ones, yes, they actually write scripts). Anyway, that's Gardner's job.

However, unlike other professional screenwriters, reality TV writers don't get to join the Writer's Guild of America, which means no health care, benefits, etc. While I was totally paid a ton less than Gardner when I worked in film and still survived, I relate to the working man's plight and thus, here's their group's site which has a brief vid about 'em (unfortunately, Gardner doesn't speak on camera).

You can also check out a small story about it in the current Entertainment Weekly (the one with Sam Jackson on the cover) on pg. 16. Gardner's gonna make history... Again! More here (entry #6).

McD On CNN

Thanks to Chris for satisfying our Michael McDonald fetish for the day.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: The Team Clermont Summer Festival continues tonight at the 40 Watt featuring Dark Meat and a buncha other folks. I trust 'em to put together a pretty solid line-up, but I'm clueless about music outside of this town. Y'all prolly know the other folks, though.

I'm also very excited about the Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars show at the Melting Point tonight. Not only do you get a what I assume will be the usual solid performance by that band, but as a bonus, you get the debut performance by "The Squallz" - which as I understand it is the Beggars doing Squalls songs... sort of Bob meeting the folks (like me) calling for a reunion show half-way. I hope for greatness. More here.

SAT: The Clermont Prom is back. Country & Western's the theme, right? It ends up at the 40 Watt with Elf Power playing cover tunes and DJ Mahogany spinning afterwards. Plenty O' PBR. That afternoon, The Long Winters guy is gonna play solo at Go Bar.

There's also a country/roots-rock/Americana thing happening the Georgia Theatre, and a punk/rap thing happening at Oasis (of all places). Each with too many bands for a lazy person to write up on a Thursday evening. The former's got Betsy Franck and The Bearfoot Hookers, the latter's got The Dumps and Rorshak. More on the latter (including that it's Free and has free food) here.

#1 On Your Birthday

Thanks to Gen for sending this cool link that lets you find out the number one song on either the American or British charts on the day you were born. Or any day after 1951 for that matter.

Tonight In Athens

The Team Clermont Summer Festival kicks off tonight at the 40 Watt with Now It's Overhead, Iron Hero, and others. It's part of a long weekend of stuff that I haven't done my homework on, but I'm sure it's fun. I'm also sure many a person hipper than me has their prom outfit all ready to go. What's the theme again? Anyway, in all honesty, I'm sure it'll be fun. More here.

Also, our loud drunk friends in Thunderchief try and break things and eardrums at the Lunch Paper.

McD Signs Whigs

For those who missed it on AMDC... Robo-Dave's hero has signed the Whigs to ATO Records. Not bad...

Update: Doh... shoulda read the wikipedia article that I've linked to:
A different person also named Michael McDonald is a co-founder of ATO Records.

Let's just pretend that the blue-eyed soul singer signed 'em... eh?

ATH = Indie Cred

Rolling Stone was recently inspired by all the Mangumspotting to write a little game to test the indie cred of its readers. Complete with hipster pic. Pretty funny. Thanks to Will for the link!

Tonight In Athens

Music Hates You and The Dumps and several other folks play things very loudly at Tasty World tonight. Good luck the bands playing downstairs. Gonna be some dissonance going on somewhere there.

Neurotic Flash Animations

Modern Living has a super cool "Nerotica Series" of flash animations. You can peel a face off, drop from a building, and flip around without leaving your desk. How nice.
