FRI: A great line-up at the 40 Watt featuring Venice Is Sinking, Summer Hymns, and Goat. One put a great album out recently, one's about to, and the other should be at home recording, damnit (in that order). Anyway, it's the kind of triple bill that doesn't happen often - and it's plenty diverse at that - so worth a trip out.
Of course, if it's not your cup of tea, there's something louder and more experimental right around the corner at the Caledonia with Garbage Island. Or you can check out Trunkfire out at Foxz for an alt-country kinda thing (they're really good, btw). And before all that, our friends in Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars will be performing a set at the Go Bar around 9 PM.
SAT:Time Toy finally throws a release show for their first and only CD Fly Swatter / Ice Water at the 40 Watt . It's quirky, it's dancy, it's fun. It's a taste of Athens in the mid-80's. Plus, another band who doesn't play much these days, Jackpot City, is on the bill as well. More here.
Also, Happy 6th Anniversary to Nuci's Space!!! Going the night will be Nuci's Space's 6th Anniversary Celebration. We don't have to tell you that Nuci's Space is awesome. Here's what they say:
Sept. 30th 9 a.m. The Space Race 5K On the UGA Campus starting and ending at the Tate Student Center. For runners and walkers of all ages and abilities! To register visit: www.nuci.org/spacerace $12 ($10 for students) 100% of the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit mission of Nuci's Space.

Or if you wanna drink, DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms (a frequent TDJer) and DJ Peach Salsa (AKA John Fernandes) will be playing their favorite German songs for the unofficial beginning of Oktoberfest at Little Kings.

A couple of very different options in very close proximity... you can catch the more experimental sounds of Diet Rockstar over at the Mercury Lounge or the poppier kinda stuff of Russian Spy Camera at Flicker (kudos to them by the way for taking the time to make an interesting website in the post-myspace world).

More weekday options... Lona brings up-tempo rock and roll with a revolving line-up to the 40 Watt. Are they still playing the set they've been playing for the last four years? I love 'em, but they need some new songs. That being said, it is a really good set.
There's also Telenovela at the Caledonia for something softer/poppier or for the experimental fans out there, Craig Lieske and outta-towner Pablo D Wilder will be at Flicker making all sorts of racket.

I'll take any excuse to make fun of the Gators.
Last weekend, my LW and I were watching the Florida-Kentucky game... and we were able to catch a brilliant moment on our digital camera. Since the video didn't turn out that great, I'll give you a brief transcript:
Florida Cheerleader #1: Let's go Kentucky! Florida Cheerleader #2: You twit! We go to the University of Florida! Florida Cheerleader #1: Whoops... Omigod! Florida Cheerleader #2: I love blue jean shorts!
Ok... well, most of that transcript was made up. Here's the video...

A very, very secret source (okay, it was Sloan) says that the much-rumored, oft-delayed Southern BitchSnake In The Grass CD release show DVD might finally be making its way to the band's merch booth sometime soon (perhaps in time for Musickfest?). Supposedly it's in the final stages of editing and pending final band approval. Can't wait cause that show was awesome. Thanks to Sloan and Matt for all their work on that!
Also, for anyone interested in getting a copy, Chunklet's running out of the Harvey Milk DVD Anthem, and it will likely be sold out and officially out of print by early October. Get yours now.

And really, try and recommend something that someone else oughta go experience to keep life interesting (keep it clean, damnit). As usual, drop us a line in the comments.

It's football season... where the H is everybody?
FRI:Casper & The Cookies return to play at the 40 Watt - where I last saw them and they sounded great. They're one of those bands where a great sound system and the right engineer can make all the difference (some lo-fi bands love muddy sounds - C&TC isn't best like that in my opinion). Anyway, great band, great venue.
Not a whole lot else happening in the clubs, but The Low Lows and others will be rocking things out at the Secret Squirrel starting around 9PM.
SAT (GO DAWGS!!!):The Dexateens, an Alabama band of with some ties to Athens given that they recorded their last album at Chase Park under the watchful eyes of David Barbe and Patterson Hood, perform at the 40 Watt. I've never seen or heard 'em, but thought I'd mention it.
The show of the night has to be the return of Powerload (the kickass Bon Scott era AC/DC cover band) to the Caledonia. Need I say more?
Of course, if you're not feeling up to loud, then you couldn't go wrong seeing Lake City's Matt "Pistol" Stoessel perform acoustic songs at Farm 255. He's been in every other band, why not see him without a net, right? Or, there' some weird poetry music thing going on at Flicker involving William Tonks (who we like) and others. The explanation in Flagpole was a little confusing.

Col. Knowledge, Telenovela, and several others perform at the 40 Watt tonight as part of some sort of health-care-money-pop-rock benefit of sorts. I think. The details are here (our sincere best wishes to Christian - I don't know him, but a "botched root canal" can't be fun). Anyway, oughta be fun.
Athens Music News - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 11:37 AM | Permanent Link
In local music news, the long out-of-print Bloodkin album, Creeperweed, is now available for purchase and digital download via their website. This album came out 10 years ago and is completely acoustic, and includes tons of songs that the band still plays today. Grab your copy before they aren't available for another 10 years. Bloodkin will also be playing the Georgia Bar on Halloween and only 100 tickets will be sold.
In addition, lead singer/songwriter Daniel Hutchens will be releasing his 2nd solo album, Lovesongs for Losers, in early October. Produced yet again by David Barbe, if it's anything like the first solo record, it should be great. Here's a brief review.
The album will be the 2nd disc for the new Autumn Tone Records, which, by the way, is related to the fantastic Aquarium Drunkard blog. (The first disc on their label was a re-issue of Hutchens' first record Lesser). You can find more information at Hutchens' website or listen to a few samples at his myspace site. You can also stream the first solo album on the Autumn Tone site. Any aspring songwriter could learn a few lessons from Daniel Hutchens' songbook, that's for sure.

It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) (40 Watt - Everyone):

A couple of big-name outta-towners makes this a pretty spectacular "easier-listening" night. First, Aimee Mann brings her very catchy pop songs to the Melting Point of all places. Small venue and I'm not sure if there are still tix. Tin Cup Prophette opens (she's gigging more than Music Hates You these days). More here.
Also, Calexico brings some of the best Tex-Mex-flavored music out there to the 40 Watt as well. Last time I saw them (a year or so ago?), they kept me entertained despite not knowing a single song of theirs before I went (and my attention span is damn short). More here.

WOW! Thank you for the outpouring of support, love and MONEY! We appreciate it so much. We all love Wendy, right?
Anyway, I wanted to update you folks that wanted to make a donation. We will be setting up a PayPal account next week. (We are awaiting our tax-free status before we can enter an account number to place the funds in.)
We couldn't do it without you! Thanks so much.

This weekend, drinks are on y'all...
FRI: Megaband, the Megaman equivalent of Contraband, perform their game-winning, well-timed rock at Tasty World. Really, if you've never seen them in any of their incarnations, you should really check it out. Very fun to watch. Also, the hilarious and talented honky rap of Grand Buffet is also on the bill (not to be confused with "Grand Buffett", my impending Jimmy Buffett cover/art project). More here.
SAT (Go Dawgs!!!):Tin Cup Prophette continues their (her) rapid pace of performances around town lately. This time with full band and likely with less than an entire set of R.E.M. or Celtic covers. Suny Lyons opens.
SUN: In an unusually rockin' Sunday night show, Music Hates You will burst some eardrums in the back room at Transmet. Good luck to the quiet Sunday night drink crowd.

Word On The Street (Just Off King) - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:23 AM | Permanent Link
Word has it that the final Possibilities album - the one that never got completed, tracked, or mastered - is being prepared for release (currently being mastered in NY). Don't know the label or a date or a tracklist or anything. Poor quality copies that aren't the final track list have been circulating around town a bit, but I can't wait to hear what it ends up like (the mastering made all the difference with Way Out). Also, the chance of a reunion show or two is, I'm told, not out of the realm of possibilities (pun noticed, not necessarily intended, but I couldn't think of a better phrase).
Save Your Money Now - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:11 AM | Permanent Link
A couple of opportunities coming up to help some good causes...
First, starting September 29th, you can have the opportunity to DJ on 90.5. All you folks suggesting how to make it better, now's your chance. Make a donation (goes to the Crisis Resource Center of Athens), and get an hours worth of time. Details here.
Then, in a story near to us as she's a friend of ours, Wendy Musick (of Southern Bitch) is in need of money for an upcoming surgery. She's having an unknown growth removed from her pancreas and unfortunately has neither the insurance nor spare cash to pay for such a surgery. So, her many friends are getting together to help out with a couple of shows in early October. Billed as Musickfest, it's a great couple of nights of music for a great cause. If you don't know Wendy, take it from me or anyone else who knows her, she's nice as can be and I'm sure she'd appreciate the support. So would we.
That's all my soapboxing for now. Keep on a'rockin.

Strangely, another impending football weekend where more's happening during the week than the Friday and Saturday of... First off, around 6PM, Ty Manning of the Bearfoot Hookers is hosting a song swap night at the Caledonia. It features Clay Leverett, Betsy Franck, and Bo Bedingfield. Good group of alt-country-ers, and an early show to boot.
Then, a very sad occasion is marked with tonight being the final show at the Lunch Paper. I know the new place didn't have the charm of the old one and all, but I still can't believe it's going away. Where has the power or degenerate spending money gone? Anyway, you can see Music Hates You, The Dumps, and about 100 other bands there. It's gonna be loud and awesome. And sad, I'm sure. But mostly loud.
I'm Old, Not Old Enough, And Eating My Words - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:31 AM | Permanent Link
How can I say this without sounding bitter about it...
1) So R.E.M. surprised many by playing the least surprising surprise gig ever at the Watt last night (or tonight, depending on when you're reading this). It sold out before I (and many others) got tickets, so I can't give any personal details (though big thanks to Sloan for trying to help me remedy that). The whole band (with Bill Berry) played "Begin The Begin" and "So. Central Rain" early in the evening then later Peter Buck and Mike Mills joined other folks including Patterson Hood for other songs (thanks to Matt for the heads up - I called and bugged him just to at least get a scoop out of this whole thing). The show's actually still going on as I write this, so who knows what else happened.
I would like to apologize to anyone I may have dissuaded with my comments last week. Once again, TDJ is not a trustworthy source for anything. But in my defense, they've never played at one of their CD release shows since they've gotten big (believe me, I was at the ARS release party - there were like 30 people there), haven't played the Watt since 2002 (and then for a political rally) and lotsa people were saying they'd play... Usually all good signs that they're not playing. I was wrong. It's the second time I've been wrong about such things in as many weeks (the Whild Peach show was supposed to feature a special guest or two that never showed). My bad.
2) How come a huge segment of the over 40 crowd knew this was happening in time to get tix and I didn't? (I'm not actually asking for an answer to this, just thinking out loud.)
3) Pitchfork feels like it's focusing on my high school years just to make me feel old: The Afghan Whigs have reunited for the purposes of writing stuff for a greatest hits album, Oasis has a greatest hits album of their own (the Pitchfork link for that story is weird, but it's there too), poor Dinosaur Jr. got their gear stolen (nobody's mentioned Kevin or Kyle suddenly having a bunch of nice, new equipment, have they?), and the Lemonheads are back. Weird, huh? And I'm sure they'll probably post something about R.E.M. later as well, damnit.
Anyway post all your R.E.M. tales, links to pics, links to other stories, setlists, stories of backstage tomfoolery, etc. in the comments.

The utter loud awesomeness that is Dark Meat is finally releasing their debut album Universal Indians (I say finally, they actually haven't been going that long, so it's kinda quick actually). I can't wait to get my hands on it. The party's at the Georgia Theatre. The equally-awesome (I'll let Ben and Lucas debate that) Venice Is Sinking is opening the show. Let's hope the Dark Meat album is as good as VIS's debut. Should be a great show. More here and here.

In honor of R.E.M.'s new CD anthology And I Feel Fine: The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 (and accompanying DVD), the 40 Watt is hosting the CD release party by having a buncha local artists cover R.E.M. songs. Here's what the 40 Watt's site says about it:
Finest Worksongs: Athens Bands Play the Music of R.E.M. A Benefit for Community Connection of Northeast Georgia and Family Connection/Communities in Schools
Featuring: Modern Skirts Five Eight Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) Claire Campbell (Hope For Agoldensummer) Bain Mattox Tin Cup Prophette Liz Durrett The Observatory (assortment of players from the Elephant 6 collective) ...performing their versions of selected songs from the entire R.E.M. catalog
There will also be a preview of the R.E.M. DVD anthology highlights before the show.
7:30 PM Doors | $12 Advance | $15 At The Door
The tix on AMdN are already sold out, but there might still be some around town and at the door. I'd say get 'em early if you wanna go, though.

"Tell me you would try to slip away somehow..." FRI: A weird mix of stuff going on tonight. Firstly, Nuci's is hosting a hip-hop night. Ishues is the solid choice of headliner, but you can also see BadKat and Bling The Children Back Home. Some of that might be kinda ridiculous, I don't know. But at least it's interesting. More here and here.
Perhaps the biggest event of the night is that Clarence Carter (yes, the Clarence Carter) is performing at the Morton. I'm too lazy to read about why, but I think it has something to do with Hot Corner. You can read about that all here, but point being that Clarence effing Carter is playing the Morton. That's kinda cool.
For a more poppy experience, Ice Cream Socialists, Russian Spy Camera and others play at Tasty World. For rock, Lona plays at the Caledonia, while former Lona drummer Mikey Dwyer plays a solo set at Flicker (no, not a drum solo set, but that would be cool cause no one plays drum solos anymore). And finally towards that same end of the spectrum, Lake City performs at Farm 255.
SAT: The hip-hop continues down at the 40 Watt tonight with Rorshak, The Renegadez, Fort Knox, and others. Basically, you can see everyone who's hip-hopped in town (who doesn't discuss wizards or fantasy football in their songs) in these two nights. Pretty much. Plus there's free pizza, wings, and cake (or so says the flyer). More here and here.
You also couldn't lose with the sonic alt-country-rockish thing Sleepy Horses has going down at the Caledonia. They can play (as proof see the above pic - there's definitely some playin' going on there).

But that doesn't take away from the fact that going to see Jucifer is like going to the circus. This (Holiday) Weekend In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
Not quite as busy as you'd think for the first game weekend...
FRI: The strange combination of Garbage Island and The Ginger Envelope can be heard at the Caledonia. Not both at the same time, I'd hope. But odd nonetheless. I guess the contrast could work well. It's Geoff Reacher's last Athens performance for a while as well, as he's moving to Texas (it's your last chance for a joke here, Robo).
SAT (GO DAWGS!!!):The Eskimos take the stage for the first time in years at the Caledonia. What's the reason now? There's a new album and more that Robo could tell us all about, I'm sure. Nutria opens (how'd they get that gig?) and Fabulous Bird as well. Good night for rock. More here.
SUN: Dunno. Go see the Bodies exhibit before it leaves Atlanta.
The Day Jobs is a group blog for those who are productively lazy. Each blogger lives, works, and plays in Athens. Expect commentary on music, arts, office culture, television, and many other forms of tomfoolery.
