Tonight In Athens (Halloween Edition!) - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
Well, it's another Halloween around town - for my money probably the best Athens holiday there is. Can't wait to see all the costumes tonight. Here's a rundown of all the shows, mostly covers...
-"JuJu" (Siouxsie & The Banshees covers - f/Mike Mills and other people who aren't in R.E.M.) at the Go Bar
-"Heavy Petty" (Tom Petty covers) and The Shut Ups' cover set (featuring a possible appearance by the great Michael McDonald, we're told!) at the Caledonia
-"Gabba Gabba Hey!" (Ramones covers) & "Goo Goo Muck" (Cramps covers) at Tasty World
-Tramps Like Us (Springsteen covers), Big Eyed Beans from Venus (Captain Beefheart covers), Fuck This Band (Mclusky covers), the Replacements Nine (Replacements covers), Telenovela's covers set, and Cinemechanica at the Secret Squirrel
See y'all 'round. If I remember my camera, I'll try and post some pics when I get a chance. If anyone out there uploads any good ones somewhere, please leave us a link in the comments here or in tomorrow's post(s). Halloween rules.

We Versus The Shark come out of the woodwork to put on a show at the Secret Squirrel before heading off to CMJ. They'll be filming for a music video of sorts to be included with their upcoming EP release - which of course will be followed by an LP someday. Costumes are highly encouraged.

Hope you got your costumes ready...
FRI:Chunklet rules this weekend, as they've set up not one but two killer shows back to back at the 40 Watt. Tonight's features two of The Comedians of Comedy: Zach Galifianakis and Patton Oswalt - without a doubt two of the best comedians out there. Even if you've seen one of Patton's shows here before, I can almost guarantee it'll be a whole set of fresh material. Plus, a set by Elf Power, who is of course also awesome. How great a night is that? More here.
And in addition - I need to keep typing to make this space longer so that it can look good on your browser. I'm gonna feel like a jerk if I left anything great off the list for tonight, but in the meantime, y'all can just skip reading this and move on to the Saturday post. Like anyone reads all these things anyway. Oh, there's some dance party at Little Kings, but I don't know what that's about. Punk rock at the 'donia too. That Chunklet poster is a live link so you can read it more closely. Okay, moving on...
SAT: The Chunklet party continues, this time with legendary sludge-rockers (how's that for your Spin description?) The Melvins headlining. I can't remember when the last time they've come through Athens was, but it's been a while. Plus, this time David Yow's totally going to be with them. Opening will be Harvey Milk - who pretty much sound a lot like the Melvins and who are completely and totally awesome to see live. I can't describe it, but even if you're not a fan of hardcore music, it's something worth seeing. Also opening is Big Business who I've never heard of, but they're probably very loud.
If that sorta thing isn't your bag, you can go check out the sorta-sonic, sorta-dancey, always-on music of Iron Hero over at Tasty World (they haven't played in a while, so I hope that means they're recording), Push! (featuring several former members of Astra) over at the Go Bar, or new MC BadKat's CD release show over at the Caledonia. More on the latter here.

Late, But Not TOO Late - posted by Mail Clerk @ 11:03 PM | Permanent Link
Wanted to wish a Happy Birthday to our own Desktop Publisher today. Unlike other people, I don't get e-mail inbox updates when it's her birthday, and I haven't seen her in a while, so I didn't remember till it got mentioned in the comments. Anyway, Happy Birthday, DP! Hope the last hour of it is great, and I hope you go party down this weekend. IOU one birfday drink.

The Late BP Helium takes the 40 Watt stage - seems like it's been a while since he's played. Maybe I'm wrong? Anyway, he and the band are gearing up, like a lotta other folks around here, for a trip to CMJ - where record company contracts flow like wine. Also at the show, British crazy person Keith John Adams and also the politi-pop of The Visitations.

Halloween Goings Ons - posted by Mail Clerk @ 3:06 AM | Permanent Link
New F'pole's up, and I'm searching through it trying to get the skinny on cover shows. So far I see: Ramones, Cramps, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Tom Petty, Replacements & Capt. Beefhart (at the Squirrel), and whatever the Shut-Ups are playing this year. Am I missing anything?
Everyone got their outfits ready? Tips for those who don't (what stores still have a good supply)? And yes, that's the reaper from Bogus Journey.

A couple of new-ish songwriter-led groups hit the stage of the Caledonia tonight. Mikey Dwyer & The Starter Kits play Mikey's tunes, while Bo Freeze's Blackout performs ... well, his. I'm not sure the full incarnation of either at the moment, but both have put out good stuff in the past. Good for rock fans.

Friggin' Finally! New Nutria - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:26 AM | Permanent Link
Nutria's fantastic new(ish) double-album is finally out. It's got like 20 something tracks of pure great pop for the price of like 12. Fans of the Possibilities will definitely wanna check it out. Here's what Jay has to say about it:
hey folks,
we're excited to have our new double cd, "cheef/metronome", released this week on fundamental records.
it's not a concept album or some long drawn out deal, but two different catchy and concise records- the first recorded by nutria satellite member chris grehan in 2005 and the second recorded by nutria drummer jason eshelman in 2006, packaged together for the price of one...
former members of the possibilities, the eskimos, the glands, and jack logan's band were all involved in the making of these albums....
I'm posting it both for my friend Mike (who writes great palindrome-based stuff) and for my gf who thinks all Dylan songs are essentially the same and make no sense and who really wishes I'd listen to less of them (to be fair - even though she's totally wrong - this song does bolster those first two points and I do listen to a bit more Dylan than the average person). Anyway, here it is:

Brit songwriter/guitar-cradler extraordinaire Richard Thompson makes a stop in Athens to perform at the Melting Point. I'm sure a lot of folks here know who he is, but anyone who hasn't heard R.E.M.'s cover of his song "Wall Of Death" is missing out - great song, great cover. Anyway, it's a rare opportunity to see a great legend play in this town.
Also, Nic Goodsen (of Sleepy Horses) and fellow Texan Dylan Sneed (of Last Picture Show) - both now Athenians - will be playing a set together over at Flicker that I'm sure will be worth checking out.

Waffle House Songs - posted by Mail Clerk @ 7:47 AM | Permanent Link
So, Vet Pharmacist and I were in (the worst) Waffle House (ever) the other night and one small moment made it enjoyable: remembering how great the songs on the Waffle House Jukebox are. A fine tune called "Special Lady" played twice! Those things drive the WaHo staff crazy (literally, I've heard), but if you're only there periodically, they're great.
Anyway, turns out you can hear 'em online and even buy a copy of the album to take home with you. Who knew?
This Weekend In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 7:46 AM | Permanent Link
These bands just relax casually...
FRI: Holy crap what a cool party the 'donia's throwing tonight. Or at least some folks there are throwin' it. It's the "Footbizzle All-Stars Show". You can see the rarely-appearing rock acts Je Suis France (Lite) and Bugs Eat Books, either of which would be enough to drag my old ass outta my house to a show. But then you throw in the fantasy football-based rap and expert flow of Excalibrah + Lil' Flip Scoldjah and you've got a winning ticket. HammJammin in the extreme. Tru. (I also have it on good authority that the long-rumored France LP is in the prep stages. Hope that's true.)
Of course, if you're not into all that, there's plenty still going on. WUOG's throwing their yearly birfday party which is also a Halloween party over at Little Kings. This year, Pegasuses-XL and Cars Can Be Blue are performing. Great lineup as well, obviously.
Or for something heavier, there's Hank III at the 40 Watt. More on that here. And for something more twangy, there's Redneck GReece over at the sketchily-located (read: BEHIND the Happy Spa) Eastwood Pub.
SAT:Casper & The Cookies take the stage at the Caledonia to rock their new stuff. There's a whole write-up about it in Flagpole this week, but I would add that if you haven't seen 'em in a while, you owe it to yourself to check 'em out again. The new band is on fire.
For more rock, Lake City and Mother Jackson are at the 40 Watt, and starting around 11PM, DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be spinning at Little Kings. F'pole says, "At tonight's dance party, expect tracks from the Isley Bros., Ol' Dirty Bastard, The Glands, Midnight Star, some house, and more." I'm sure he can tell us more.
Weird Al Is Back. Balee Dat. - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
Though the lyrics-as-video thing kinda kills the fun a little bit, Weird Al's new single, "White & Nerdy" (a parody of Chamillionaire's "Ridin'" for those who know it - not a requirement) is damn funny:
(And yes, before you ask, the official "White & Nerdy" hoodie - as seen in the video - is for sale on Al's site... if anyone was wondering what I wanted for Christmas.)
Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
It's major flashback time at the 40 Watt as the Dexter Romweber Duo, Flash To Bang Time, and Polemic (okay, they're kinda newer than the other two) perform together. Rare for each to play. Probably unprecedented for a triple bill. Fun line-up.
For something softer, there's Peter Alvanos (of Fabulous Bird) over at the Mercury Lounge. And for something odd and possibly not true, there's the apparent rumor that Everclear (yes, that Everclear) is going to play the tiny new bar The Library (formerly known as "The G Spot" and before that "The Brass Monkey" - if I remember correctly). They're doing a tour of college towns and have a break in their posted schedule tonight and are going to Mobile, AL tomorrow, so it's possible. Probable, we'll see? Stranger things have happened. Anyway, F'pole printed it and since so many people here probably came of music-loving age in the 90's, thought I'd mention it.
UPDATE: My bad, wrong bar (as Hillary pointed out). The bar the supposed Everclear show is at is actually the place formerly known as Athens Music/Burger Factory and The Last Call and The Fifth Quarter and all that. Makes more sense now. That place is bigger.

Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
Poster pretty much says it all, right? Squirrel's site also mentions The Renegadez (and has all the links you could need). I have no idea what time it all starts, but maybe Ian'll tell us.
Also, Claire Campbell will be playing a solo set over at the Melting Point. Expect material from the mythical upcoming solo album that'll follow the supposed HFAGS sophomore LP. Doesn't anybody record anymore? Anyway, the material's there and it's good.
Finally, don't forget the MusickFest Art Auction tonight at Flicker. Wendy's doing well and I'm sure very grateful for the money that's been raised, but she's certainly still a very long way from out of major debt, so every bit helps! Plus, it's great art from a lot of folks. It all starts at 6:30 PM in the theatre portion of the bar and many more details can be found in our earlier post and here.

Well, F'pole lists tonight's performance on WUOG's "Live Fast Rules" as "Music Hates Young"... dunno if that's like Music Hates You's alter-ego Neil Young Cover project or what, but I can say that MHY's return to WUOG is interesting in and of itself. Plus, they're loud. And awesome. 10 PM.
Also, Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons perform at the Georgia Theatre. Been a while since the group hit the stage in that incarnation... with Jerry touring on his own and all. Jayne'll have a lot more details to this that I could provide.

MusickFest Art Auction - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 3:39 PM | Permanent Link
Just when you thought MusickFest was over, not so fast. The live music portion has already happened; however, there is still the art auction this Wednesday night on October 18.
Between the 2-night benefit show, and the rock memorabilia auction, somewhere around $15,000 has already been raised. This should cover about half of Wendy's surgery costs so the MusickFest folks are still trying to raise a bit more to help out. (Next year, the benefit aims to do the same for someone else in need.)
Thank you again for supporting Wendy in her time of need. She is now back at home (after 8 days in the hospital) and resting. Her surgery went well and the biopsy came back benign! She has a long road ahead of her but is expected to be rocking again by the holidays!
Hello Everybody!
MusickFest Benefit has been a huge success so far! Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped to make this whole thing happen! We have one event left - the Art Auction.

All out-of-town bidders must register with us by Tuesday, October 17 at 5 p.m. We will take your maximum bid and bid for you until your max bid is reached or surpassed. (In the event of a duplicate maximum bid for one item by two or more out-of-town bidders, the bidders will be called on cell phones to duel it out. In the case of a tie bid with a local bidder and an out-of-town bidder, the local bidder, who is present at the auction, will win the bid.) Projector Anyone? - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:49 AM | Permanent Link
DJ has a request for the big show at the Caledonia this Friday that I can't help with, but maybe someone can...
Do yall know anyone who has a projector, or anyone who could possibly rent one from UGA? I have somewhat exhausted my outlets and thought "hey dayjobs might know".
That would rule if you do. Of course free admission and free brews for anyone who can help!
Thanks a ton DJ
Hope someone can help cause this show's gonna rule. At the risk of sounding cliched, it might be the hammjamminest. If you can help, e-mail him to let him know. And just to clarify, he means a projector you can hook up to a laptop. Thanks!

Really needin' something to cure what ails right now (horrible football loss + speeding ticket kinda weekend). Also, if you're ever taking 78 the whole way back from Atlanta (you can take Ponce De Leon till it turns into 78), then beware that somewhere in Snellville, it turns to a 35 mile/hr zone for a mile or so and the sign that tells you about that is less than prominent.

This Weekend In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
Happy Friday the 13th. Now, this is how a fall Athens weekend is supposed to look!...
FRI:Phosphorescent, in a new incarnation, makes a return to the stage briefly before disappearing for a fall European tour. Expect a new batch of tunes and hopefully none that are 45 minutes long. Stereo Campbell and other join at The Caledonia. More here.
There's also We Versus The Shark making a relatively rare appearance these days at the Secret Squirrel with (as usual) many others. I read in F'pole that their recent absence is because they're recording a new 4 song EP. I really hope that means IN ADDITION TO a new full-length.
SAT (GO DAWGS!!!): A huge double bill at the 40 Watt as Camper Van Beethoven and Built To Spill will both be playing. I've seen both of 'em there - Camper a coupla' times. Both played solid shows. No doubt well worth your time.

Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
The "worldgrass" (their term, not mine) sounds of Calliope Fair can be heard at Flicker tonight. Not something I'd normally think about going to see, but their song on the "Live in the Lobby" comp this year was really good so worth a listen, no doubt. Good songwriting and not a bad choice for a mid-week down-tempo night out, plus they don't play out that much.
Also, Circulatory System makes their way back into the clubs for an increasingly rare show featuring a lot of their new material, for sure. What can you say at this point? Can't wait for the new album and their live shows rock. Visit the Caledonia tonight to see why. Also on the bill: The New Sound of Numbers, M Coast, and The Instruments. And Jeff Mangum*. Yes, really!
*=No, not really.

MusickFest Wrap-Up (It's Not Over!) - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:40 AM | Permanent Link
Hey Y'all, Kimberly Morgan sent this letter on behalf of the folks behind MusickFest:
Thank you to all that helped the music portion of MusickFest such a success. We raised over $12,000 in cash and checks and still have to include the credit card receipts. We still have the Art auction on the 18th as well. So yeee haww ya'll! What a difference this will make for Adam and Wendy.
Wendy is progressing well. I've been visiting several times a day bringing Adam his meals. He has not left her side. What a great husband. Wendy is still in A LOT of pain and has not had any food or water in over 3 days now. They cannot let her drink or eat, for a couple of reasons... but they know what they are doing and she is getting a little better every day. Yesterday, she was able to hold short conversations and was making a lot more sense than the days prior.
This whole experience has meant so much to me. I think it has made our community a stronger, sweeter place to be. It's nice to know exactly how much we care about each other.
THANK YOU Kimberly Morgan
That all being said, it's not over yet. You can still donate through Paypal and at the art auction. Here are those details again:

We want to release our new record in the near future.
Since we're doing it ourselves, we'd like to get an idea of how many people would be interested in pre-ordering it. If enough people pre-order it, we'll be able to get it pressed and released a lot more quickly.
Those fine friends who pre-order the album ($10 + small shipping charge) would get an extra bit of goodness as thanks for helping make the release possible. We haven't yet decided what that will be. It will more than likely be an extra cd of music.
I suppose they'd prolly accept an e-mail too. If you're on the fence, there's a new song up on their myspace page.

Southern Shelter has a preview of the DVD up, as well as some live audio from featured performers for MusickFest.

In addition to the Athens benefit, friends and fans of Wendy in Memphis, TN have put together a smaller version of the festival planned for October 13 at Memphis Original's (Mo's) located on 3521 Walker St. Please contact Mark Brown for more information.
We sure hope to see you there!

Stop the presses... SNL was actually halfway funny this past weekend. Here's the highlight:

Several things happening around town of some note... First off, the 40 Watt is hosting the Low Lows for their record release party, which is also their last Athens show before departing for a very extensive tour. Push! (featuring former Astra folks) and Sleepy Duo (Nic & Brandi of Sleepy Horses) open. All in all, there better be some nice shoes to gaze at (or so says Flagpole).
Also, Venice Is Sinking takes the stage at the Elberton Fair around 8 PM. Which, as Lucas said yesterday, is "Right after the wrestling, baby races, and racing pigs. For real."

For The Last Time, It Wasn't Us! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
Apparently, CS informs me, we've been getting hits from people looking for details about the story involving North Oconee County High School and some MySpace scandal. I mean, if we had scandalous details about the goings on at local High Schools in the last decade we'd probably post 'em. But we don't.
All we have to offer are the (seemingly now defunct) "Tales From The Real O.C." - now with freshly repaired links! Also, we just got a MySpace page like a month or so ago. We don't have that big of a network yet. Sorry to all those looking for lurid details, but we're glad to know we came up on a search like that.

Producto, who has all but disappeared into the studio following a series of outings this past summer, re-emerge to perform at Tasty World tonight. Hoping to hear more new stuff, but we'll see. They're opening for outta-towners Paper Cranes, otherwise known as "Rain Phoenix's band". I'm sure there's a big after-party at Stipe's place. You're all invited if you can scale the fence and get past the guards.

To get folks ready for Musickfest later this week, Sloan's put up a preview of the upcoming Southern Bitch DVD - which will be released in a very limited quantity at the show on Thursday and will be sold there and Friday if any remain until they sell out. I've seen actual clips from it, and it's gonna be awesome (it's widescreen and not all stretched/compressed-looking like this clip - which is a YouTube thing). Anyway, here's a look-see:

Back from the weekend... Anyone do anything especially exciting and/or relaxing that other people can also do? Tell us/them about it in the comments! (Or just use this space to complain about things - I don't mind, either way.)
The Day Jobs is a group blog for those who are productively lazy. Each blogger lives, works, and plays in Athens. Expect commentary on music, arts, office culture, television, and many other forms of tomfoolery.
