Tonight In Athens

Grammy-nominated metal powerhouse Mastodon (not to be confused with Megalodon - the most awesome shark ever) takes the stage at the 40 Watt tonight. Technically an Atlanta act, the band's rarely at home (much like how Jucifer is technically an Athens band) and is said to kick much ass live. Though why MHY isn't opening this show is beyond me. Anyway, it's gonna be loud and heavy for sure. Much more here and here.

Vick... Really?!?

So, SNL's latest funny - enough - to - get - net - momentum - so - it'll - prolly - get - taken - down - soon sensation is this bit on Michael Vick:

(Note: If it disappears before you can view it, try here.)

Dear Old People: Your Collective Whining Has Been Heard

Guess what? To everyone who's whined and cried over the past coupla' years about how late shows start around town, those in charge at the Caledonia (up in their ivory towers) have finally heard your bitching and moaning...
Hi Dayjobbers:
Happy to pass along the info that PBR is now sponsoring Friday happy hour shows at the Caledonia every week. We're hoping to start up early February so any bands interested can contact Jeff via our Myspace. Yes, we have heard all you guys complaining about the late shows and we are responding!
Kaya
Now, I know some of you are going to complain that you'd like these shows to happen during the week as well. And the other half of you are going to complain that if there aren't gonna be good bands playing, you're not gonna go anyway. And then the young people are gonna call you all old and out of touch.

But I think this is really awesome news. Thanks for the update Kaya. Now, if you can just talk Ceiling Fan into having a reunion, we'd be all set...

New Of Montreal Video

Those weirdos in Of Montreal made another video. It's for "Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse" - the first single from the new(-ish) album. It's also the closest approximation I can think of to what a nightmare might look like for one of the members of ABBA. Enjoy...

The Bitch Is Back

A message from Southern Bitch:
Hey Everyone,

If you have a moment stop by our page for some updates regarding SXSW, Paste Magazine, and just basic info letting you know the Bitch is Back!! Wendy is healthy again and the band is ready to rock! We put up a couple of other tracks from "Strong Medicine" for you to check out as well as a live video clip of "Come On". Hope you guys enjoy it. Look forward to hitting the road and rocking out with our friends.

Rock on!
Southern Bitch
Rock on indeed. Can't wait for their return to the stage here on Feb. 17th.

This Weekend In Athens

"I know a place..."

FRI: A completely kick-ass line-up tonight at the Georgia Theatre featuring Contraband, Mouser, Venice Is Sinking, and We Versus The Shark. It's like a house party from 3 years ago... complete with funny-tasting beer. Here's the official scoop on the new albums by the latter two bands: Nothin'. Updates? Jeff? Lucas? Anyway, the lack of impending new LP's doesn't make this show any less compelling. It's four great bands back to back. Can't beat that. The Georgia Theatre website says:

Mouser 9:30 PM
Venice is Sinking 10:00 PM
We Versus The Shark 10:45 PM
Contraband 11:55 PM

Anyone think it'll start that early for real? Just listing it as a heads up.

SAT: Punk rock fans rarely have a better lineup these days than the one at Tasty World featuring the return of Guff to an Athens stage along with new mainstays The Dumps and Thunderchief (both of whose members all run through various punk bands of the past). The recent story on Guff is this: they got signed to Go Kart Records (as big a record label as you can get in the punk world and still maintain "cred") and went to L.A. to record their label debut. In the process of recording, somehow Steve Perry (yes, that Steve Perry) heard them and asked them to cover a rare (unreleased?) Journey song called "I Can See It In Your Eyes" for inclusion on an upcoming Journey tribute album. He produced the session for the song himself. So Guff is down with Journey. You can print that.

Speaking of former icons, The Lemonheads (kinda) return to Athens to play the 40 Watt. It's actually Evan Dando with some new guys, but that's all it ever was anyway, right? People who love the 90's will be there. Feel free to share your favorite Lemonheads memories in the comments, even though it's totally weird if you have something that classifies as that. Bonus points if they include Matt Penfield.

How to Entertain a UGA Football Recruit

I get weekly e-mails with UGA Football updates. These updates compile recent news clips, reader submissions, and gossip about the Dawgs. During this time of year, the normal topic of conversation is recruiting.

Yesterday, I received an update in which a recent recruit's visit to UGA was described by a UGA student, Bo Gibson:

...I thought I'd let you know about Orlando Franklin.. He came and hung out with us at General Beauregard's last night and was being shown around by Jeff Owens. (By the way Jeff is not only a friend of mine but by far our best recruiter on the team.) I think a lot of recruiting is based on how comfortable the recruits are with the players already on the team and how much they like the city. Athens, as anybody who has gone here knows, is always fun. But last night was different than usual because there have been a ton of people from out of town in Athens recently. Orlando was really quiet and didn't seem to be enjoying himself that much and if I had to guess I really doubt that we'll get him, but if anyone can land him it will be Jeff...

So... they took this guy to General Beauregard's? ...and he chose not to attend UGA? What a surprise.

You mean to say that young, black football players don't like hanging out in bars w/ confederate memorabilia all over the walls?

But wait... It turns out that the UGA player who took the recruit to Beauregard's, Jeff Owens, is a black dude! He hangs out at General Beauregard's? Is that the same bar that I remember? The one with the rebel flag in the window?

I'm so confused...

Tonight In Athens

Annually, Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars celebrate the birthday of their muse, long-dead Scottish poet/rapscallion Robert Burns. He would have been like 200 years old today. Thus, they're playing a lot this past week or so and for a few more days. Tonight's show is at the Melting Point - where you can get hot wings to go with your music, which of course adds greatness to whatever. So, a damn good show to check out.

There's also William Tonks over at Flicker and the re-emergence of Electa Villain at Tasty World.

State Of The Blogosphere

Since every hack with a keyboard is busy typing what they thought about the speech last night, figured we oughta post it. It's a trimmed version, but you'll get the point. And the Dems' response is included (okay so it's the only-funny-in-places Upright Citizens annual production, but close enough):

Actually, the creepiest moment of the whole night (for real) is well-discussed here. Other than that, there were a coupla' great live blog comments:

"After the speech, we want Chris Matthews to ask everyone what they think Bush’s favorite Baby Einstein DVD is … “World Animals”?"

"Brit Hume is sorta like Tony Snow’s mom."

A Day Behind

Yesterday marked the release of Of Montreal's new record Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? Pitchfork has a review of the album up, and Sloan Simpson has shared some video with us over on his site. I'm sure you've all noticed this band mentioned in a thousand other places recently too. Congratulations to yet another Athens band in the headlines!

Casper and the Cookies on Daytrotter

Casper and the Cookies will be recording a session for Daytrotter, the MP3 blog, this week. Should be good stuff.

Attention Heathens & Alcoholics

Thanks to Jason for sending on the following. I didn't even know such a bill was up for consideration. But you know we only get off our asses when it involves cigarettes or alcohol or downloading or whatnot. In any case, the e-mail forward lists it as "urgent", so everyone get writing...
The Sunday sales of beer and wine in Georgia is an issue that according to an AJC poll 68% of all Georgians favor, including over 80% in the Metro Atlanta area. Senate Bill 26 (click on the link for full bill text) would allow local communities the right to decide if beer and wine could be sold in grocery and convenience stores in your area. Currently, the bill has been assigned to the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities committee.

The only hope for passing this bill is for legislators to hear from the citizens of Georgia. If you want our effort to be successful, now is the time to make your voices heard and let Georgia's elected officials know your feelings on the issue! Our opponents have fully engaged on this issue and are currently contacting legislators. Please contact the Senators on the committee and let them know that local control of Sunday sales is an issue that is important to you and the businesses in your community

Below is a list of Senators on the committee who need to hear from you. An email or phone call to their office is vital to our success on this issue. Below is a script that you may use. Please forward this important information to your friends and families and ask them to do the same!

Quote:

I am asking for your support on Senate Bill 26 which would allow our local community to decide if beer and wine should be sold on Sunday. For me, the opportunity for Sunday sales is about good customer service and basic economic fairness. Georgians were empowered to make this decision for local restaurants over 10 years ago.

As an average citizen I am one of many Georgians who want the
opportunity to have my voice heard on this issue. In a recent poll over
80% of Metro Atlantans agreed that it is time to change Georgia 's blue
laws.

Pylon's "Last" Show Footage

Thanks to Bob Hay who posted a link a few days back to these videos of Pylon's first "last" show at the Mad Hatter (in Athens) back on 12/1/83. It's a great show and even more surprising, great footage. If you haven't yet seen it, check it out. And if anyone knows who shot it or where I can get a copy, please let me know...

Still no word on the re-issue of Gyrate (and the band's website seems to have disappeared), but for the super-fans, here's a bit about Vanessa singing with Mission Of Burma recently. Thanks, Bob!

Monday Morning Sound-Off

What up everyone? It's Monday. For many of you, it's likely very early. But hopefully you've got some good memories of this past week you can share. Let's be clear here: the public at large doesn't give a damn if you walked your dog or met someone special or both. What everyone here would like to know is if you saw a great band or movie or ate a great meal or did something particularly fun or rewarding that other people can do and enjoy. If so, by all means, please recommend it in the comments.

How To Make Great Coffee

My brother, who worships at the altar of Good Eats, recently tipped me off that Alton Brown's got some pretty good tips on brewing the perfect cup of coffee. If you've got your own tricks, please share.

This Weekend In Athens

Variety is the spice...

FRI: Camera Obscura and M Coast play the 40 Watt at what is likely the biggest show of the night. Been a while since the scotspeople performed 'round these parts. And of course, I think it's universally agreed at this point that M Coast is at the top of their game. Should be a great show.

Of course, there are other options. For something quieter and for those wanting to eat and listen at the same time, there's the Dromedary Quartet at the Melting Point or for those who like to listen and lose lots of hearing at the same time, there's Music Hates You (check out the newly-designed website) at Nuci's Space - always loud, always awesome.

And since there's been much talk about earlier shows (even though this is a weekend)... Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars perform on WUGA (91.7's) "It's Friday" at 4 PM gearing up for their annual Burns Birthday festivities. Shortly afterwards, the Caledonia hosts a happy hour show around 6 PM with two new bands - Hat Channel and Welterweight. Kincaid fans should be particularly interested in the latter. More on that show here.

Meanwhile, fans of Calliope Fair can catch an acoustic performance by Noel Blackmon and Betsy Inglesby at the new OK Coffee location (corner of College & Clayton - next to Wuxtry) from 8-10 PM. Finally, if you're just looking to go dance off your week (or if you're a huge James Brown fan), then head to Little Kings around 10:30 PM to hear DJ applePaul, DJ Strawberry Julius and DJ Mahogany spin at their "Mr. Dynamite - A Tribute To James Brown" show.

SAT: Bradford and his band Deerhunter return to Athens, stepping up into the 40 Watt after their last super-bill sold out the Caledonia handily. So, if you missed 'em then or just want more, you got it now. Banned? Not so much.

Also, there's a Five Eight show - which weirdly enough seems rare - at the Melting Point. Not sure the reason for their lack of playing out lately, but they always bring a great show. And local Americana maestro Dodd Ferrelle & The Tinfoil Stars return to the stage at the Caledonia for the first time in a long time as well. More on the latter here.

Finally, there's more dancing to be had as Go Bar's "Bitch Switch" DJ duo tears it up.

Dear Wonkette: Your Mama's Gay! Go Dawgs! Woo!

Seriously, I have no idea who the ballsiest congressman on the floor is, but damnit, I respect him. If congress is gonna pass a bunch meaningless dribble about football, he was the only one who stood up to make sure his voice was heard on the serious matter. We will NOT honor the Gators no matter what... even if their victory did earn us money for the conference and sealed another SEC victorious bowl record. The only thing I don't understand is where the hell were all the other GA dissenting votes? (Abstaining from voting does not cut it.)

Do we really have to wait till August for college football again? Damnit.

A (Long-Winded) Note On AthFest

Dear Bandmembers,

Another AthFest submission season is upon us. At their website, you can now download the forms for submitting music to the AthFest comp as well as request early consideration for the outdoor stages. May we (I) offer up a few of suggestions?

1) I know you want everyone who buys that CD to hear you in your best light. You want to offer up the best material and then maybe earn a new fan or two when some unknowing stranger picks up the AthFest CD. Hey, we all want that. But nothing is more boring to those of us who already own your CD than to hear a song we've already hear 100 times. Choose a b-side. Something that makes it worth buying. And don't try and trick us by putting out a song early that's gonna be on your album that comes out in two months anyway.

2) Just because it's a b-side, don't let it sound like it is. The song needs to be awesome nonetheless. I know, it's a tall order to ask for a song that kicks ass and yet isn't on your album. But plenty of big bands do that through singles every year, and I'm confident our hometown bands can do the same - at least, the good ones. Hell, it can even be a re-mix or a radically different live version. I'm not sure if it's allowed by AthFest or not, but if you don't have a song like that ready, how about covering another Athens band's song? That'd be cool.

3) For you big bands, and you know who you are, many of you have been staying away from AthFest lately. I know you can probably make more money on any other night selling out indie rock clubs around the southeast or maybe even the country. And that's great. But just think how cool it would be to play to a packed-out Washington Street - to kids and old people and all that. And if it rocks right, that's a might big reception. Plus, hometown pride and all that. So, give the organizers the choice of an incredible set of headliners this year (no more irrelevant outta-towners, please).

4) As for booking, don't be afraid to play shows the week before or the week after AthFest in addition to your AthFest slot. Those weekends are usually pretty blank and sometimes folks are either craving more or didn't/won't get to see you play at AthFest because of scheduling.

5) Make sure your CD is for sale at the AthensMusic.net booth. I know it sounds like I work for them, but I don't. I just don't know how many times I've gone looking, or heard someone else ask for a band's CD that wasn't there. Especially bands that have been around a while or are playing outdoors or Friday night. More people look there for your CD than anywhere else, especially if your show is packed and no one's at the merch booth that night.

That's it, for you bands. Now, for the organizers and people in charge of choosing bands for the CD and stages... well, music selection is a matter or personal taste, and I'm not gonna preach on what would be great choices because as I get older I realize that my taste sometimes sucks bigtime in hindsight.

That being said, try and keep it local and good... and please, please, please make sure that outdoor sound is great (we all remember that one year). Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to pimp your own products in between sets... I remember hearing 311 in between bands one time - why not the AthFest CD's? Or other local acts? Maybe you'll get a few more purchases at the AMdN booth out of it.

That's it... that's all I got. Hope this year's fest is awesome and I'll see y'all there on June 20-24th.

Sincerely,
MailClerk

Tonight In Athens

A fairly busy Thursday, which is a good thing. There's a fantastic double-bill over at the Caledonia with the up-and-comers Titans Of Filth and the seldom-playing pop mainstay Big Gray. Well worth catching if you're into pop stuff.

If you want something heavier, Goat's playing over at the Georgia Theatre for the first time in a long while as a full band. Don't know if there's new material or not, but it's a rare occurence these days (used to be like, every other week).

There's more country-influenced rock n' roll down at the 40 Watt with Mikey Dwyer & The Starter Kits and Timber (the latter being more country than the former). Or, if you're like me and wouldn't mind something earlier and softer, then Flicker's got Patrick Carey (of The Ginger Envelope) and Paul McHugh (of Mother Jackson) playing acoustic shows starting around 8:30.

Athens Music News

A coupla' notes about upcoming shows. Firstly, for you Camera Obscura and M Coast fans, Mike from HHBTM dropped us a like about that show with a warning for people like me who never buy tix in advance:
just a heads up on the camera obscura / m coast show this friday. it's $12.00 and doors are at 9:30, and M Coast goes on at 10:15 sharp. i think a lot of atlanta folks are going to come up for it due to the fact that the atlanta show is going to sell out on wed. so townies might look to get tickets early on this one.
Thanks for the heads up, Mike.

And y'all oughta all mark your calendars now for Feb. 17th. That's the triumphant return of Southern Bitch to the Caledonia stage to finally have a release party for their newest, Strong Medicine. Certainly one of the best albums of this year or last, it's gonna be quite an awesome show, I'm sure. Don't know if it'll sell out or not, but I'm gonna be there... right up front. Hell yeah.

Tonight In Athens

The hard-rockin', hard-drinking act Thunderchief headlines the 40 Watt tonight in a show that wasn't listed at press time. It's a buncha AC/DC, Motorhead, and Clash fans who don't sound like those people but like to drink a lot and rock loudly. They would not debate the description. If you're up for loud and drunk, that's the place to be.

Zach Galifianakis + KFed

Here's a video of K-Fed dancing on the Late World w/ Zach show:

The video's not all that funny, other than to see Zach G. and K-Fed standing together several years before K-Fed's rise to hip-hop fame. For those who aren't familiar, Zach's normal stand-up material is much more risquee, musical, and funny.

Random Factoids To Amuse

I just found out that Elvis once entered an Elvis look-alike contest and placed third. The only story I can find about it is a small anecdotal paragraph here (scroll all the way to the bottom and it'll be the top or second visible paragraph if your browser is maximized).

Also, I had never looked at a list of the best-selling books of all time. We all know what #1 is, but some of the others are really surprising (in some cases, I've never heard of them). And it also reminded me of one of Computer Support's favorite bumper stickers of all time.

Tuesday Morning Sound-Off

Hey y'all. Back to the grind with no holidays in sight. Never fear... there's plenty of other excuses to drink yourself sick and skip work. I'm sure there are. In the meantime, drop us a line in the comments let us know what's up in this down to get us all through the winter doldrums.

Flight Suit Fever

Since the pres gave his "please support this thing we're already doing" speech last night, there has been many a well-thought-out response on either side of the fence, but none of them are as entertaining inane as the following from a congressman who Wonkette identifies as, "Rep. David Wu (D-Dorkville)":

(Feel free to hit stop after he leaves the podium unless you love watching poorly-made propaganda... and yes, we're in the business of ripping off Wonkette posts again.)

This (Holiday) Weekend In Athens

Scattered... Covered (C'mon bands, students are back! Let's get out there and rock!).

FRI: 63 Crayons performs - with plenty of new material - at the Caledonia tonight as part of Superfluous Umlaut Records' showcase of sorts. But I don't think the Crayons are on that label, so I'm not sure what's up. In any case, you can bet that with that crew running things, there's gonna be some major-league B.O. present somewhere in the room. Oh, and "live tattooing".

You can also catch Summer Hymns at the 40 Watt. They leave for tour very soon in support of their new album Backward Masks.

SAT: A couple of newer-ish acts that used to play all the time - namely Cars Can Be Blue and Russian Spy Camera - come back out of hiding to play a show at the Caledonia. It's pop fun and a great double bill (with other acts I don't know off hand).

Of course, if you like more complicated music, you can see Kenosha Kid over at the Mercury Lounge. In fact, Neal Fountain - the bassist for Kenosha Kid and also for my money one of the finest musicians in this town - currently has a show up at Southern Shelter (while you're there, get the Ceiling Fan show just cause they're AWSM).

SUN: Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars perform a FREE show at the ACC Library at 3PM. If that doesn't sound like a balls-out drunkfest, I don't know what does. Really though, it's a great show to see. Those folks are always great and you can even bring the fam. If I'm in town, I'll be there. (Bob - when is the rest of the Squalls stuff coming to CD format?)

MON: Happy MLK Day!

Booking the Bejesus out of the Caledonia

This is good news from the Caledonia's myspace bulletin. I've personally felt that the caliber of lineups at the Caledonia this year have not been up to par compared to the past few years. So bands, take note! And for the sake of all of us Day Jobbers 'round here, please play more happy hours (but only if you are good)!

Greetings masses,
We the ever-dutiful booking staff at the Caledonia have decided to pull our thumbs out of our asses in order to book the bejesus out of Athens, GA's finest and tiniest rock club. There are tons of available dates in the next few months (including January), and we're hoping to book a whole lot of happy hour shows for folks that like to get in bed early during the week. WE WILL BE CHECKING MYSPACE FOR BOOKING REQUESTS, SO FEEL FREE TO WRITE TO US HERE!
Now, that having been said, a few rules for booking that we'd ask you to follow:
1. If you are a band from out of the Athens, GA area, we would absolutely love to have your awesome band play at our awesome club. However, the music-listening public in our town seems to prefer a local band playing on the bill with your awesome band. While there is a minute chance (.000043%) that we can pair you up with a suitable local band or add you to a pre-existing bill, there is a much greater chance (99.999967%) that you can get a show if you team up with one of the many friendly local acts. Check http://www.flagpole.com for contact information and local band descriptions if you haven't already.
2. Local bands are quite a bit easier to accomodate, but it is much simpler and more fun for all parties involved if you already have a few bands in mind to play with. Usually, we keep it to two or three bands a night, but we can have as many as four (or five on very, very special occasions). If you can't seem to find another band to play with, we can try to pair your band with a band of comparable genre and musicality, but sometimes when bands that don't know one another are sharing a bill, some guy from band B will take the guitar player from band A's girlfriend in the bathroom and fuck her and everything just gets really goddamned complicated. You know.
3. That's all the rules I can think of.

Here's some helpful info: Soundcheck for normal shows is at 8:30 PM. Shows usually start between 10:30 and 11 with doors opening between 10 and 10:30. Our production fee is a paltry $100, which means after 20 of your friends pay our typical $5 entry fee, you keep all the money that is made after that. Happy Hour shows usually start about 6 or 7 and are over by 9. We can host Happy Hour shows any day of the week excepty, of course, Sundays. If your band is really shitty (like Je Suis France), we reserve the right not to book you. If your band is really, really, really, really shitty (like Redstone Rising or any number of bizarro male Tori Amos impersonators), we will definitely book you because we think you are hilarious.

Okay, my name is Jeff and if anybody has any questions you can write me here. Hope to hear from you soon.

The Legendary James Booker On Film

One of the good things about Carnival time is that I have an excuse to mouth off about New Orleans (where I was born). One of many hidden gems from its musical past is James Booker who some people think is the greatest piano player ever. Certainly one of the best piano showmen ever that's for sure. Would you expect any less from a paranoid, one-eyed, bisexual junky with an insane amount of skill?

Anyway, finally someone's posted some video on YouTube. Certainly not his best stuff, but you can kinda see how great he was at playing (The vocals leave something to be desired sometimes, and are unfortunately high in this mix. A better representation of his skill would be on the all-instrumental album Spiders On The Keys, which you can listen to on iTunes). Hope y'all enjoy:

Tonight In Athens

Stereo Campbell logs another performance at the Flicker tonight. Southern folk-soul-ish stuff fo' sho', but where is the new album, y'all? Seriously. F'reals. Also, the original and still the best H'arpeggione player out there, the man formerly known as Erik Hinds and then Killick Erik Hinds (his real full name) and who is now just known as Killick, performs at Repent (the bar formerly known as Lunch Paper).

The Some EP

Just wanted to make sure that y'all all saw that Sloan posted a link to Chunklet's posting of the Some EP (an Athens comp from 1986 featuring the BBQ Killers, Time Toy, Mercyland, and Eat America). Thanks both to Sloan and Henry!

Always In Threes

No one's really discussed the events of December yet here, so I have to bring 'em up...

First and foremost, I mean absolutely no disrespect to the man, but was I the only one who thought of this when they heard about Gerald Ford?:

Seriously. And I can't help but post one of my favorite links ever in the wake of the hurried execution... Rock, Paper, Saddam! (P.S.: There's a sequel!)

Finally, I don't think we can let the death of the Godfather of Soul go by without remembering why he was awesome in the first place (there's no funny here, just some awesome funk and Bootsy on bass ... well, the French audience is funny):

Scene Missing: The Book

Scene Missing Magazine has a book out called Bulls Under Water. Lotsa high-quality pics of folks around Athens. You might be in it. Who knows? From Jason:
there's a preview option on the store website.

and you can always have a look at the scene missing flickr photostream.

Here are a few of the sets included in the book.
Thanks for the heads up, Jason!

Tonight In Athens

If your ears still work from last night's show, then you need more loud. The Dumps'll be at Tasty World (which makes it doubly loud) to fulfill that wish. Or, for something more low key and likely a bit odd, you can see Craig Lieske (Garbage Island) and Pablo D. Wilder (Hotel, Hotel) at Flicker. They're gonna experiment till they can't experiment no more.

R.E.M. Receives One More Honor

Congratulations to R.E.M. for their soon-to-be induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were selected by 600 industry "experts," along with Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash, Patti Smith, the Ronettes, and the Furious Five. The ceremony will take place March 12 in New York.

Tonight In Athens

It's a loud, loud way to kick off the new semester/near year as Jucifer returns to town for likely the last time for a while (maybe only time this year?) to play the Georgia Theatre. Really, truly if you've never seen 'em play you owe it to yourself to check it out. It isn't always the greatest musical performance (I mean, they're always good, but it can get muddled sound-wise), but it's like the circus coming to town - a huge spectacle that you have to see. Tonight, Producto opens so it's a great double-bill at that. If you can go, by all means go.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Welcome back, students, slackers and all other types. Hope you had a great Christmas/Holiday/New Years, etc. I feel like I had a whole buncha stuff to post when I got back, but now I've damn near forgotten it all, so we're just gonna start the year out fresh trying to find new amusements. In the meantime, drop us a line in the comments to let us know what's been up these past few weeks.

Oh, and to NOLA contingent... it's officially carnival season once again! To that end, here's the supposed recipe for McKenzie's King Cake (scroll down a bit). This version's with cream cheese filling. If it is the real recipe, then just don't use the filling (but do use the gold, green, and purple sprinkles - no icing), and you've got the original, traditional Mardi Gras King Cake. Of course, who knows if the recipe is real or not.

Nutria on Film

TDJ friend Karate Media has put together a nice, short video of live Nutria footage. The video is for the song Tied and Bound and is from the 10 High in Atlanta. Nice work KM!
