Since this was way late, figured I'd give it its own post... Jay Gonzalez (of Nutria) now has a weekly residency as a piano player at Kingpins. He says: "Big Ed Connelly over at Kingpins has been nice enough to let me be the official lounge piano player every Wednesday night from 8-11 in the Spare Room Lounge ... though I'm not against the odd Sinatra cover or requests, I'm going for more of the pop rock version of the piano man, doing 50's rock and roll crooner stuff, 60's brill and bubble gum and Beatles, 70's am hits and power pop stuff, the inevitable yacht rock covers and so on..."
We'll try and keep posting about these shows weekly, cause I'm surely gonna go see a few of 'em (and bowl and drink and eat cajun food). In addition, Nutria will be playing there this Sunday with the Silos at 8PM.

The 63 Crayons finally release their new album, Spoils For Survivors, tonight at the Caledonia. They've always been a great live band, but if you've never heard their records, y'oughta. The New Sound Of Numbers opens the show.
If that's not your cup of tea, there's some sort of film celebration up at the Georgia Bar. Music accompanying (of course) with performances by William Tonks and John Mills as well as something called The Bloodkin Review.
UPDATE: In case y'all don't read the comments, someone from the 63 Crayons reminded us: "Don't forget the free beer to the early birds! Also, the 1st 15 people will get a free copy of the new Crayons cd. Doors open at 9pm, 1st band at 10pm sharp." We love free. And since I'm old, I love early.
Also as commented yesterday, Karate Media's been working on a special "record player" for Jay Gonzalez's (Nutria) side project, The Inflatable Orchestra. Check it out here (or streaming for faster load time).

Didn't think I was gonna post, did y'all? Anyway, today would have been Johnny Cash's 75th birthday (Is that right? Seems young.). In honor, some folks are getting together to perform his songs at the Caledonia. Of course you know Don Chambers & Goat are heading it up. There's also Clay Leverett and Birds & Wire, who I'm unfamiliar with. Also, Pete McBrayer is gonna be hosting, but I have no idea how you tribute Cash through comedy. We'll see. Doors at 9PM, which is kinda early for the Caledonia.
Also, next door, the Japanese powerhouse Elekibass is performing at the 40 Watt. They can rock power pop like nobody's business. Ice Cream Socialists are with 'em too.

FRI:The Flip Scoldjah and Excalibrah mend their eternal feud to briefly share a stage and bring the hip-hop world to its knees momentarily as they open up for Dr. Dog at the 40 Watt. Balee Dat. Also, down at Caledonia, The Owen 4 (featuring former Annaray, Daisy, and Jack-O-Nuts members) performs along with Push!. More here on that.
In addition, several of the folks from The Titans Of Filth will be over at Hot Corner Coffee performing in various incarnations. And for hip-hop fans, there's like 1000 local emcees performing as part of "The Insurgency" upstairs at Tasty World. More here.
SAT: Atlanta's Black Lips roll into town courtesy of Chunklet to perform at the 40 Watt as part of their CD release shows. Also rolling back into town along with them is Dark Meat who've been on a Southeastern tour for the last couple of weeks, which still has a few more days yet to go (btw - hasn't Jeff been commenting this whole time?). This'll be an awesome loud show folks. Without a doubt worth seeing. (More here and here.) And of course, just hours earlier in the same club, NY improviser Jeremiah Cymerman and his Big Exploitation have his/their own CD Release Party. More here.

Just making sure no one missed Jeff's heads up that We Versus The Shark also has a coupla' new tunes up on their myspace page. They're from the new EP/DVD due out in April and there's further talk of a new LP in the fall.

Two great shows at the Caledonia tonight. First, for all you folks wanting the early shows, Megaband headlines a three-act lineup for which the doors open at 5PM. Doing the math, that likely leads to first act at 5:30 or 6, which likely means Megaband will likely hit the stage by 7:30 or 8-ish, with the show ending at 9-ish. Can't complain about late night there. Oh, and I don't know who Marnie Stern is, but everyone else seems to, so thought I'd put her name in too. She opens the show.
But if late night's what you're after, there's more options. Mother Jackson and Atlanta's Dead Confederate play at the Caledonia later in the night (doors at 10PM). Or you can dead over to Detour to see Ham 1 perform.
New Music - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:40 AM | Permanent Link
Just a heads up that there's brand new music on the myspace pages of local acts Magic Missile and The Help.
Also, Nutria wants you to know that their album is still for sale, and in a growing number of places (and since we're Nutria's slaves, we're totally re-posting their PR crap):
hey folks,
just a reminder that you can now download the album(s), "cheef/metronome" from itunes, and purchase the cd online from amazon.com and other online stores, as well as from www.fundamentalrecords.com. for folks from athens, ga... the cd is now available at both wuxtry and schoolkids records downtown...
and, for anyone in hotlanta, we're playing the international pop overthrow festival at the 10 high club one wednesday night, february the 21st at 8 pm sharp...

Bigtime outta-towners Deerhoof drop by in for the first time since Popfest (that I remember?) to perform at the 40 Watt. Y'all all prolly know a lot more about 'em than I do, so I won't run my mouth. Meanwhile, locals Russian Spy Camera and King Of Prussia will be down at the Caledonia.

Folklore and The Titans Of Filth perform at the Caledonia tonight for one pop-licious evening. Definitely check out the new Folklore album, The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman if you get a chance. Earlier in the night, The Folk Yous play Flicker, dropping of course some sweet covers of 80's hair music in folk form. And maybe some Tom Petty too.
Happy Mardi Gras! - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Mardi Gras. Might not mean a lot to a lot of y'all, but it means a lot where I'm from originally. As usual, your best place for free downloads is the fantastic NOLA music blog Home Of The Groove. They're more rare cuts than usual this year, which is kinda cool. If you really dig on some Mardi Gras music, this is by far the best collection. Anyway, do it up right, go get some Popeye's or Zatarain's or something and then drink a lot.

All you Vic fanatics probably read in this week's Flagpole that Vic Chesnutt is currently recording an album with Elf Power, Sam Mixon and Curtiss Pernice. What it didn't mention is the other Vic Projects in the works. Could we really see three of his albums released this year? You may also read what Vic's friend, and sometimes touring partner, Kristin Hersh has to say about her short time with Chesnutt in Nashville recently (see the Feb. 1 entry).

Tasty World gets a bit louder tonight as Music Hates You and Thunderchief take the stage. What's there left to say, really? If you haven't seen MHY play, y'oughta'. FRI: Not a ton going on tonight, weirdly enough. There's Jonathan Richman and some project called "Poor Boy & Poor Kid" involving former Athenian Joseph Plunket at the 40 Watt. More here. Any other ideas? Post 'em in the comments.
SAT: Finally, finally, finally Southern Bitch returns to the stage. They are one of the best and one of the loudest bands in town (not to mention one of the nicest) and completely rock. If you've never seen 'em, it's like you're watching a 70's stadium rock concert but in a tiny club. Amazing. Tonight's show is a release party for their very great new album Strong Medicine and features Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise as well as Mother Jackson. More here.
The Prophecy Revealed - posted by Mail Clerk @ 8:06 AM | Permanent Link
Yesterday, I got a flyer for the "Discover Prophecy Seminar". One of the lecture series is this one:
It really worried me - beyond the image of young Liam Neeson holding a radioactive isotope. ... What attacks of Feb. 11th? Did I miss a news story a few days back? Was this a long time ago? Or is it yet to come and therefore worth paying to attend this seminar? (That's how they get ya!) Well, I did some research, and it could have been any number of things:
1944: German troops re-conquer Aprilia Italy (Attack of Panzer Divisions) 1964: Beatles 1st live appearance in US; Washington DC Coliseum (Attack of Beatlemania) 1964: Greek & Turks begin fighting in Limassol, Cyprus (Attack of olive-producing countries) 1968: Israeli-Jordan border fight (Attack of never-ending reprisal attacks) 1969: Dorey Funk Jr beats Gene Kiniski in Tampa, to become NWA champion (Wrastlin' Attack!) 1979: Iran's premier Bakhtiar resigns, Ayatollah Khomeini seizes power (Attack of the A-holes.) 1986: Iran begins Fajr-8 offensive against Iraq (Ditto.) 1990: James "Buster" Douglas KOs Mike Tyson to win heavyweight boxing crown (Attack of Angry Gamblers) 1990: Nelson Mandela (political prisoner-27 years) freed in South Africa ("Now it's time for some payback" Attack) 1993: Howard Stern's radio show begins transmitting to Rochester NY (WRQI) (Attack of the commercial breaks)
So, not sure what they're referring to, but I hope it's one of those. If any of y'all attend the seminar, please let us know!

Lona, Bo Bedingfield & The Wydelles, and Betsy Franck all perform at the 40 Watt tonight. Sort of an alt-country-ish fiesta. With some good rock and some folk involved too, I guess. Anyway, tonight's show for Lona is a bit of a rarity... John Neff's back to play with 'em, and I think other members of their once "full" lineup as well. Hey, anybody know what ever happened to Neff's solo album?
Also, down at Flicker, Athens ex-pat(s?) Don Chambers and Eric Sales (former Primates & Buzz Hungry) perform acoustic sets. More here on that. For something more experimental, Diet Rock Star is over at the Mercury Lounge. And finally, last but definitely not least, Cinemechanica, Mouser, and others play at The Secret Squirrel.

Danger Mouse ... Not Just For Flagpole Anymore - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:34 AM | Permanent Link
Danger Mouse has an (admittedly boring) interview at CNN.com. The prestige for a former local is just kinda cool to see. The only "new" news is that they've already started work on the next Gnarles Barkley album. I think we all saw that coming. Anyway, I guess he doesn't have to talk to Gardner anymore if he doesn't want to.
Oh, and while it's not CNN, Deerhunter's Bradford Cox was recently interviewed for Pitchfork, tossing out a few local places and names along the way.

FRI: What is hopefully a new tradition begins in earnest tonight at the Caledonia - Happy Hour shows! Sponsored by PBR, your favorite acts play shows at 6:00 PM so you can go early, get drunk, and pass out happy hour style. Tonight's performers are 80's power-ballad-turned-acoustic performers The Folk Yous. So, everyone who whined about late shows, I expect to see you there.
And for pure dancin' joy, the DJ Duo "Bitch Switch" (who happen to both be women) will be performing at the Go Bar.
SAT: A quieter kinda night at the 40 Watt, with Tin Cup Prophette headlining. The stripped down Venice Is Sinking Trio will open the show. Of course, if you're dying for something much, much louder, just next door at the Caledonia there's Music Hates You playing for the second night in a row, this time with Atlanta metal act Zoroaster. More here.
Meanwhile, over at Little Kings there's some sorta "Battle Of The Deejays" - my guess: rump-shaking will win for all. 8-Track Gorilla and others perform as well. More here.

What about the nominees for the 1st Annual Music Blog Awards? (Local band Drive-By Truckers are nominated for a category, as well as TDJ friends Large-Hearted Boy and Aquarium Drunkard.) And what about the best American protest songs? (The Truckers are also mentioned here.) Have at it folks.

The Woggles are playing the 40 Watt. That's right, the Woggles. And they haven't really broken up. They were an Athens band. And an Atlanta band. And have been touring everywhere. You can catch up with them in this great article. The Lickity-Splits (officially dropping the "Colonel Knowledge" from their name) open up. Sounds like it's gonna sound like a revival of 60's stuff. In any case, great to see both those bands back on the 40 Watt stage - both are known for fantastic live shows.
If you want something much louder and heavier, the Max Canada (the bar formerly known as Room 13 and The Engine Room) has its inaugural show featuring Music Hates You and The Dumps. I have no idea how it's gonna be, but the new owners set it as one of their goals to start hosting shows, so hopefully this'll go well.

Bigtime show at the Watt tonight, seemingly out of the blue. Circulatory System performs for the first time in a while. New album... still in progress. Short Effeminate Man Rocks NFL - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:08 AM | Permanent Link
Okay, so in case you missed it, Prince played the best Superbowl halftime show ever. It's 2 AM right now, and I mixed and matched the available clips to get the best quality (noticeably better in the last 2 clips) - there'll probably be a better version available by the time you read this. But for now, here it is:
(Intro / "Let's Go Crazy")
("Baby, I'm A Star" / "Proud Mary" with Florida A&M Band)
("All Along The Watchtower" / "Best Of You" Melody)
("Purple Rain")

The "Mother Jackson Micro-Orchestra" performs at Flicker. The first time in a while they've done an acoustic show. You wouldn't think it'd work, but last time I heard it worked very well. La Pistola (Matt “Pistol” Stoessel of Lake City and a bunch of other bands) performs as well. Show starts around 8:30 PM.
Monday Morning Sound-Off - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
Good morning and welcome back to another fantastic week. Maybe. I don't know. Probably not. But in any case, I hope the Superbowl turned out how y'all wanted it to. "I dated your sister until you told me not to"... Happy Groudhog Day!
FRI: Southern rockers from all around should be quite pleased with the lineup tonight at the 40 Watt featuring the Patterson-Hood produced Alabaman band The Dexateens as well as Atlantans Dead Confederate. It's Southern. It's loud. It's rock (but more punkish than say, Skynyrd). More here and here.
Later that night, the dance party's over at Little Kings featuring the female DJ Duo "Bitch Switch".
SAT: It's like Popfest split itself into two and took over two clubs next to each other... While the show at the Caledonia featuring Casper & The Cookies, Russian Spy Camera, outta-towners How I Became The Bomb might be officially endorsed by the Popfest crew, the combo of Madeline and The Ginger Envelope at the 40 Watt would also be well at home at that festival. For the former, you can hear How I Became The Bomb's Popfest set over at Southern Shelter, and the latter show is a CD Release show for Madeline's new album, The Slow Bang. More here and here/here, respectively.
Of course, if you're into a different sound, The Gourds are performing at the Melting Point. Years ago, many of you probably downloaded (or had a friend who downloaded) a bluegrass-ish version of Snoop Dogg's "Gin & Juice". Likely, this version was attributed to Phish or some odd group on the net. It is not Phish or that other group. It is The Gourds.
SUN:Venice Is Sinking performs at the Athens-Clarke County Library as part of their monthly concert series - a trend I'm enjoying (as a concept) despite having missed the show I wanted to see last month there. Anyway, they should be right at home there... unless you're trying to read and concentrate real hard. To that I'd say: "Just check it out and go home, nerd. People are trying to rock."

Ice Cream Socialists, recent winners of the coveted "one of Flagpole's favorite office albums of the last year" award, jump onto that big ol' 40 Watt stage to rawk the house.
