This Weekend In Athens

2007's one quarter over with...

FRI: The crunkest of the crunk, the Ying-Yang Twins, descend on UGA's Georgia Hall (basement of the Tate Center) as the climax to the "Week of Soul" events. The Student Union's always dropped a pretty penny on the artists for this event annually. This year's no exception, I'm sure. More here. Get it crunk!

Earlier in the day on that very same campus - but in a different locale - Tin Cup Prophette'll playing at noon at Herty Field (by the fountain on North Campus). I'm sure she's not charging as much. Fact, show's free.

Fans of Kincaid will wanna check out Welterweight at the Caledonia tonight. I didn't seem 'em last time they played, but it's got two ex-Kincaid-ers in it, so can't be too shabby, right? And attention punk rockers: Guff, The Dumps, and Thunder Chief will all be representin' at Tasty World (Upstairs) tonight as well.

Finally, if you just wanna dance, check out Bitch Switch at Detour or DJ Mahogany at Go Bar.

SAT: Now It's Overhead and Venice Is Sinking fill the 40 Watt with all sortsa sonic goodness. They've both put out some of the best sounding work in this town lately - try the CD's with headphones on. Both deliver very well live too. Won't be a disappointment, I'm sure.

For those who like their old-timey with a little hardcore ethic (I don't), Old Crow Medicine Show will be at the Georgia Theatre. If rap's more your thing, there's the "Battle At The Lounge" featuring Elite Tha Showstoppa and a buncha other emcees I know precious little about all at the Caledonia all night long.

And a coupla' talented DJ's... the homegrown DJ Mahogany plays again, this time at Little Kings, while Canada's Kid Koala spins at Tasty World. You alternative rockers may remember him opening for Radiohead on one tour that swang through here way back when. More here.

SUN: "Andrew Reissiger's Going Away All-Star Jam" takes place at Farm 255. Yup, the Dromedary member heads cross country, so this is a fond farewell featuring your favorite (really, their favorite) world musicians from all around Athens. Talented lineup, no doubt. Best of luck, Andrew!

MC Rove in Da House

The true highlight of my day. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the political mastermind behind our administration.

Tonight In Athens

A continued theme of the last few weeks: a happening Thursday. Firstly, Atlanta's much-talked-about Deerhunter strolls back into town to rock the 40 Watt. It's loud fun and supposedly Cryptograms is awesome, though I've yet to hear it. Also, Folklore plays songs from their new LP The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman at Detour tonight. I remember a few folks mentioning last time that was a nice place to play, but I haven't been to a show there yet either.

There's also Patrick Carey (of The Ginger Envelope) at Flicker at around 8:30 PM. More on that show here. But before all that, 63 Crayons plays on WUOG's "Live In The Lobby".

UPDATE: No LITL for 63 Crayons... that's next week! Our bad.

Athens Bands In The News

Local artist Madeline gets a review in Pitchfork, and Southern Bitch gets some nice compliments in this article. Though it does, of course, make it essential for all of us to start referring to Adam Musick as Andy Musick the next time we see him.

Trapped In The Drive-Thru

Continuing our theme of weird people making awesome music, Weird Al has released a full animated video for his 11-minute epic "Trapped in the Drive-Thru". Enjoy...

And because I missed it when it was apparently released a while back, here's a hastily-animated vid for "Don't Download This Song" - another reason why Weird Al is awesome!

Too bad he's only playing Valdosta on this tour!

Tonight In Athens

Jay Gonzalez keeps up his weekly thang over at Kingpins, playing the hits on piano for your listening pleasure. The man's got some talent, so I highly recommend stopping by for a drink (or if you're against that, something else - they've got Cajun food) and having a listen.

Also, Tracer Metula in its new incarnation performs at the Caledonia.

Heads Up: Primus Still Rules

As a flipside to horrible disasters like realizing a band you used to listen to wrote the worst songs ever, sometimes - mostly rarely for me - you can go back and listen to something you'd passed off as a fad as you aged and suddenly realize in revisiting that it was genius and amazingly original and you can still enjoy it as much as ever.

So, I'm starting the Primus revival right here. They totally ruled and still do*. For those who loved them before and for those who have never seen/heard 'em, here's a few awesome samples of the magic...

Tommy The Cat:

My Name Is Mud:

And of course... Wynona's Big Brown Beaver:

They ruled. Let the revival begin!

(*=Jam band Primus doesn't count. The memory of old Primus rules, though.)

Shoorah!

After I begged him to do a post about it, Dan over at Home Of The Groove wrote a bit about the history of the word "Shoorah" (or "Shoo-Ra") in New Orleans music. Bottom line, nobody really knows what it means, but it's been the inspiration for several great songs. My favorite is by Allen Toussaint. His version, as well as the cover by Betty Wright (scroll), are well worth your download time. Available, of course, for a very limited time.

Didn't get enough of Mandy Jane & The Jaws Of Life or miss their recent show? The duo's back in a more intimate setting, playing Flicker tonight at 8:30. So, you're all set, then.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

How was y'all's weekends? Drop a us a line, and don't just make it what you drank or what video Jayne rented or Robo ranting... cause apparently that's so been done. C'mon folks, give us something fun to do. Some of y'all have lives, I'm sure. Let's hear it.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: Firstly, y'all need to get your butts over to Herty Field (North Campus) to hear Venice Is Sinking perform at 12 Noon outdoors as part of a UGA sponsored show. Not sure how those pale folks'll fare in the midday heat, but maybe there'll be some clouds? Anyway, university gig, way to go!

A few hours afterwards, Russian Spy Camera'll be on WUGA's (91.7's) "It's Friday". And if you miss 'em there or simply want more, they'll be down at Go Bar later tonight.

Meanwhile, the pop combo of Ham 1, Mandy Jane & The Jaws Of Life, and the new experimental-sounding act Druid City perform at the Caledonia. More on the latter here (Julien, btw, is a helluva nice guy). And if none of that's your cup of meat, then Kenosha Kid'll be keeping a jazzy beat over at the Mercury Lounge.

SAT: Yes, yes, yes... it's the triumphant return of the kings of heavy metal karaoke: Knight Seeker. They are bringing the hard rock to the Caledonia like only the can. They rock out totally perfectly to all the 80's-ish metal you love; you and your friends sing the lyrics (which are projected on a screen). More than one celebrity guest has shown up in the past... it's just an awesome event. Have a few drinks beforehand.

Of course, I understand that's not for everyone... so you can also see Of Montreal returning from Public Nudity Tour '07 to play at the 40 Watt (more here), Audition With Max Reinhardt playing another show at the Go Bar while Sunni's in town, Birds & Wire at Nuci's Space, and Kenosha Kid once again down at the Mercury Lounge.

Finally, there's a coupla' new acts performing (one debuting) tonight as well over at Little Kings: Diego Catalan and The Diamond Center - the former featuring Jim Wilson (of Mother Jackson, Goat) performing some of his own songs with an all-star lineup, the latter featuring former members of Sleepy Horses and Brown Frown. Should be good stuff. The famed Mother Jackson Micro-Orchestra performs as well. More here.

Def Leppard Lyrics

I remember a while back at a Folk Yous show that there was some discussion between the performers and some audience members as to whether the dumbest song ever was "Cherry Pie" or "Pour Some Sugar On Me". It was not until this weekend, when I heard an unbelievable amount of hair metal (Sirius in friend's car + road trip) that I have say that Def Leppard in fact wins not only for that song, but for their entire catalog. I mean, the songs actually make no sense whatsoever. Much like the band's name. Guess we were forewarned. But at least you can waste time at work reading through them years later. Cause it's funny.

Tonight In Athens

There's a lot going on tonight. Dark Meat returns from SXSW and heads up a show at the 40 Watt, with Hope For Agoldensummer on the bill as well. Will HFAGS ever put out another album? Who knows.

For those in the mood for loud with no in-between, you can catch Music Hates You and The Dumps opening for Effie's Club Follies (burlesque show) over at the Georgia Theatre or Atlanta's Dead Confederate down at the Caledonia.

For something softer, there's a great lineup at the Mercury Lounge featuring Chip McKenzie (of Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise), Nic Goodson (of Sleepy Horses), Coy King (of Nightingale News).

Vic Chesnutt Talks About Songwriting

Poet and UGA graduate Travis Nichols' 1999 interview with Vic Chesnutt has been posted over at Weird Deer. Even though it's old, I still enjoyed this a lot. It's a 4 part interview titled "It Weren't Supernatural." The original transcript of the interview orginally appeared in Flagpole, and even though part 4 isn't out yet, here are Parts one, two, and three. It touches on topics such as eating rabbits and Jeff Mangum, but also provides extensive insight into Vic's songwriting methods and thought processes.

R.E.M. Hall Of Fame, Etc.

Online Athens has put up a special section dedicated to R.E.M.'s Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame induction. There's pics and audio from the night as well as a "rarities jukebox". If you missed the whole thing like I did, here's the YouTube version:

Vedder Intro / Acceptance Part 1

Acceptance Part 2

Acceptance Part 3

"Begin The Begin"

"Gardening At Night"

"Man On The Moon"

"I Wanna Be Your Dog"

And just for kicks, here's some vid (don't get excited, it's just lyrics put up on screen) for their new cover version of John Lennon's "#9 Dream" in poor, real audio style sound. You can get it at iTunes. Proceeds benefit Darfur relief efforts:

Tonight In Athens

Our buddy Jay Gonzalez is of course back in the piano room of Kingpins for his weekly residency - being Wednesday and all. He does all sorta tunes and even takes requests. And although I'm not really into his stuff, I guess I should mention the Robyn Hitchcock show at the 40 Watt tonight. REM/Minus 5 members'll be backing him up. I'll probably hear about it if I don't post it and it takes up space. More here.

Gay Robot

I've known of Nick Swardson's obsession with gay robots for a while now. What I didn't know was that Gay Robot was actually turned into a TV pilot (heads up: clip is 20+ minutes long but well worth it - mostly safe for work with a lot of humor revolving around... well, I'm sure you can guess)...

And when you're done with that... here's a deleted scene:

Spring Break Continued...

Re-posted as promised... Now I'm off to do more keg stands and whippits. Spring Break! Woo!

THURS: Jack Logan hits an Athens stage for a solo show at Flicker for the first time in a very long time. Not sure what he's gonna be playing - maybe some stuff from him and Kevin "Mystical Powers" Lane's RPM Challenge CD? Who knows. Should be a show worth seeing, though.

FRI: Dancer VS Politician - the band formerly known as Panda - have a CD Release show at the 40 Watt. It's Sanni's (from Audition With Max Reinhardt's) band, but unlike her other band, this one plays pop music, not traditional German Cabaret songs. Some songs in English. Some in German. You can still hear some at Southern Shelter. Push opens.

Experimentalists Diet Rockstar and and pop maestros The Ginger Envelope perform at the Caledonia in what would seem an odd pairing, but should be a cool evening's worth of music. In another odd-ish pairing, Bloodkin performs at the Georgia Bar with 8-Track Gorilla & The Love Handles.

SAT (Happy St. Patrick's Day!): Atlanta's Magnapop make the drive up to play the Caledonia with locals Producto. Not sure what Magnapop's been up to, but I know Producto's just finished recording an album. Supposedly due in "the Spring". Any update on that Pedro?

Earlier in the night, our friend Mark Brut performs a solo set at Tasty World at 6 PM. Later in the same venue, Mother Jackson and Lake City bring the sound up considerably. One in a very hard rock kinda way, one in a more Americana kinda way. But both rockin'.

If you wanna dance, DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms, Bitch Switch, and others perform at Little Kings. And last but certainly not least, Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars perform at the Go Bar as what would seem appropriate for festivities.

Live it up!

Local band Producto gets a nice nod from Michael Stipe in this article. I am curious though. Is he saying that Arcade Fire and Producto played a show together? Or is the sentence just misleading?

Monday Morning Sound-Off

You know the drill, tell us about your weekend. Any new discoveries in Athens by way of food, music, movies, books? Something to avoid? Entertain us, please. It's Monday.

Congratulations R.E.M.

Today is the day that R.E.M. become official inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Online Athens has a huge section dedicated to the guys, as well as this article. If you feel the need to get together with others to celebrate the occassion, and watch the induction live, you can head over to the Melting Point tonight for a viewing. Or you can be lazy like me, and watch it at home on VH1 Classic from the comforts of your couch. Begins at 8:30 p.m. EST.

This Spring Break In Athens

Although I'll be around a bit, I'm gonna take next week off from blogging and try and enjoy life as a student (get 1000 other real life things done). So, maybe some other bloggers here'll post (and if this post gets knocked off the 3 day list before the dates are up, I'll re-post it), but I'll be back on Monday the 19th. Hope y'all have a great week!

FRI: Friday evening happy hour shows return to the Caledonia with Don Chambers performing tonight with doors at 6PM. Last time was a lot of fun and kinda cool to be drinking and rocking out while it was still light out. If you haven't gone, you should check it out.

Even earlier on, Philly band Pattern Is Movement is performing at Wuxtry at around 4 PM. Later in the night, they'll also be playing at The Secret Squirrel with We Versus The Shark and M-Coast. WVTS and them hit the road the next day on their way to SXSW. WVTS'll stay out for a series of shows, so wish 'em luck! More here.

Meanwhile, former Athenian Maria Taylor returns from the frigid Midwest with a full band line up full of Saddle Creek regulars to play the Caledonia. In listening, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound of her new album. The downer lyrics are still there, but the music is much less sparse and surprisingly upbeat at times. Fabulous Bird opens.

Over at Flicker, Killick - AKA Erik Hinds - has a CD release party. Not sure any details on his new CD but he's releasing something and chances are it's related to the H'arpeggione (and instrument he designed and built himself - it's pretty impressive). Improvists Craig Lieske and Frank Gratowski perform as well, and likely all together.

And if none of that suits you, then go check out Tin Cup Prophette over at the Melting Point.

SAT: Venice Is Sinking heads things up at the 40 watt. They're always great and I hear trying out new material lately. Opening is a cool supergroup or performance roundtable or something called "Claire, Page, Patrick, Daniel, and Madeline" featuring folks from Hope For Agoldensummer, The Ginger Envelope, Madeline and some dude from Atlanta I don't know.

Also interesting musically would be Castanets at the Caledonia (more here), Deaf Judges (a hip hop collaboration featuring Old White Women and others) at Little Kings and Francine Reed at the Melting Point. I've actually never heard her sing, but the F'pole description mentioned Irma Thomas and that's enough for me.

Something else very cool is going on as well - Deadly Designs is having an Art Show at the Mercury Lounge featuring a lot of Mike's cool photography of shows from around town. The show lasts for a month, but this is the opening night, so I'm sure there's a good bonus for going on this night. In any case, his shots are great, so y'oughta go check it out.

SUN: Megaphone Man, a music group mostly featuring the work of Neal Fountain, performs at Farm 255. It's an improv group, but not too drone-y. Definitely worth hearing. Very talented folks in that group.

MON: Casper & The Cookies get set to hit the road once again and perform at the 40 Watt on their way outta town. They've gotten some good acclaim nationally lately and it's about town. They really are at the peak of their game (so far) right now. Folklore open the show up.

There's also Ham 1 over at Flicker.

TUES: A traditional night of loud over at Tasty World with Music Hates You and The Dumps. They play all the time and I'm sick of trying to come up with descriptors, but it really, truly is a show worth seeing, even for folks who wouldn't consider themselves metal fans.

WED: Jay Gonzalez (of Nutria) continues his weekly stint as the piano man for Kingpin's from 8-11. You can bowl. You can drink. You can request.

That's the short list... there were like 200 listings to dig through, so if I missed something great, drop a line in the comments!

Finest Worksongs

Remember way back when - when R.E.M. played their own tribute gig? Well, you can now get a recording of that momentous night exclusively through AthensMusic.net. R.E.M.'s actually not on the CD itself (members of their fanclub already got at least one recording of their performance), but a lot of cool Athens folks do appear on it including Liz Durrett, Tin Cup Prophette, Five Eight, Patterson Hood, The Observatory, Bain Mattox, Modern Skirts, and Claire Campbell. Even has a Sloan Simpson recording... and you know we dig that dude. Click here for many more details.

Tonight In Athens

Flicker hosts a coupla' folks who have been in Athens for years making great music with many bands you've heard of... but they're flying solo tonight. Jay Gonzalez (of Nutria, former Possibilities) performs instrumental tunes - pop, not experimental - in the form of his project The Inflatable Orchestra. He also recorded an album for the RPM challenge and will have free copies for folks there. Peter Erchick (of Circulatory System, former Olivia Tremor Control, etc.) opens up the show with some of his own stuff. Possibly some collaboration between the two. Starts at 8:30-ish.

Pride Parade

Finally making an imprint in the Internets is Pride Parade - the new group formed with former members of Brown Frown, Polemic, Annaray, and a few other bands I'm sure. Basically, formed from the staff of The Max Canada. There's stuff up on their MySpace page now, but none of it has a title. Should appeal to folks who like Brown Frown and Dark Meat and the heavier kinda stuff. If not, you probably stopped reading this post a few sentences ago. EP and/or LP forthcoming as well. Shows soon (March or early April). That's all the news I got on that front.

Tonight In Athens

I'm guessing that many, many of you will be attending My Morning Jacket's sold-out "Under The Sea" themed prom night at the 40 Watt tonight. Don't forget - you actually supposedly DO have to dress up for it. So get dressed up. But since you already know if you're going or not, I'm not gonna harp on it.

Meanwhile, those of you/us who don't have tix have other good options. If you like things a bit punk and a bit goofy, then the Guff/Dictatortots combo over at Tasty World is definitely for you. Or, for a somewhat softer tone try Kings of Prussia over at the Caledonia or Madeline over at Detour.

UPDATE: Photo changed to match current lineup... hope that makes their publicist happy. :)

Cars Can Be Blue and Christopher's Liver bring the power duo thing to the Caledonia tonight. Didn't they both just play there last week? Am I wrong? Anyway, they're playing there... possibly again. And for those who liked At The Drive-In, some of their members (the ones not on Mars Volta) are in Sparta, who are at the 40 Watt tonight.

Kevin Lane Can Walk Through Walls

Kevin Lane, who has many mysterious powers, apparently also has the power to write and record a CD in a month's time. And you can have that CD for free courtesy of the man himself...
Hey, I uploaded mine and Jack [Logans]'s February challenge CD if anyone wants to check it out. It's called Handsome Devils. We wrote and recorded it during the month of February as part of the RPM challenge. It's kinda like the "write a novel on November" thing. We finished it with one day to spare! It was fun as hell and I'm kinda bummed it's over.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/nyv4k7

I uploaded it as one long mp3 because some songs run together. Here's the tracklist:

01 You Will Do
02 Pickin' It Up
03 Flyin' Home
04 Then Again
05 Homemade Knife
06 Obstinate
07 Not Impressed I Guess
08 Spartan Accommodations
09 Frontal Lobe
10 You Just Let Go

Matt Lane played some drums on 4, 8, and 9, and Chris Grehan played some banjo on 8, guitar on 9. We had a blast making it, I hope you dig it!
Thanks Kevin!

This Weekend In Athens

No Sloan, this is 8TG...

FRI: Local pre-math legends Time Toy perform their quirky best down at the Caledonia. Did they ever play there when it was the 40 Watt? Dunno. Anyway, 8 Track Gorilla and The Love Handles are with 'em... a show you can only see in a town like this, that's for sure.

Meanwhile, another local legend, Dexter Romweber, performs over at the Melting Point. Yes, as a "duo", but not that duo. And if you just wanna shake ass, DJ Mahogany's spinning over at Little Kings with some special tribute to 80's females.

SAT: It's time to get out your earplugs and noseplugs again cause the Superfluous Umlaut Showcase takes place at the Caledonia. Tonight's show features hip-hoppers Old White Women and pop duo Christopher's Liver amongst others. Gonna be a real good time with some real odd folks.

Meanwhile, at the 40 Watt former Floridians now Athenians part-time NowItsOverheadians Summerbirds In the Cellar perform. And not in the clubs you can find Telenovela at their own CD release show at the Secret Squirrel. Also on the bill, which is a quite awesome one, you can hear the Titans of Filth and the Ice Creams Socialists.

SUN: Weird that one of the bigger shows of the weekend happens on a Sunday... and in a bowling alley nonetheless. Anyway, local pop masters Nutria open up for the national Americana act The Silos at Kingpin's. I have no idea what the sound'll be like there, but if anyone can make it sound good, it'd be those bands (oh, and R.E.M. made it sound good too - or at least the bootlegs make it sound like that). Cool show.

It's attack of the Adams night at 40 Watt as Americana-ish singer-songwriter Adam Klein heads things up with Southern Bitch frontman Adam Musick opening up the show with some of his solo stuff - which is fantastic. No word on what the change in schedule for his band means for the future release of his solo album, but I know it's in the can. Have to ask him at some point.

Other shows of interest include Pegasuses-XL over at the Caledonia and Atlanta hip-hop sensation YoungBloodZ at the Georgia Theatre.

UPDATE:
Somehow, I totally glanced past the Magic Missile listing for tonight as well. They're playing at 9 PM at Flicker, starting with some of Meghann's solo stuff (see the comments for more details).
