A great mid-week lineup at the Caledonia tonight with tourmates Summer Hymns and Folklore heading up the bill. Quiet Hooves plays as well. Or, if you're more into a quiet evening, I might recommend Mr. Jay Gonzalez over at Kingpin's (from 8-11). He plays mostly covers, some originals on the piano there and takes requests (make sure to tip!). Kingpin's actually serves food as well now (which I hear is good - a lotta Cajun stuff), so you can eat, drink, and enjoy the tunes.

Since I've been rockin' with the Boss lately (part of my iPod's recent apparent hostile takeover by a Clear Channel classic rock station), I thought I'd post I Hate Music's "How To Write A Bruce Springsteen Song..." It's done in choose-your-own-adventure style and would have been very accurate through 2002 when it was written (pre-E Street Band reunion).
Also, Stiller does a great Springsteen:
I can't find "Bruce Springsteen Makes An Answering Machine Message Tape" anywhere, but that one's funny too. Oh, and if you've never seen the Puff Daddy Fanatic with Stiller and Jack Black, y'oughta.

And the pre-AthFest summer quiet officially begins...
FRI: A few notable acts still playing around town while everyone preps for AthFest... For instance, the trio of William Tonks, John Neff, and Jack Logan perform at the Morton as part of Athens 441.
Meanwhile, just down the road, former Athenian Kevn Kinney returns to down with his band the Sun-Tangled Angel Revival to perform at the Melting Point. The show will also feature the debut of the HEAP Project - the new band featuring Bryan Howard of the Sun-Tangled Angel Revival. If you're interested in seeing this show, Kevn'll be on Rock 103.7 starting at 4:30 today and he'll be giving away CD's and tix.
SAT: Talk about quiet nights... you can go see Push! perform at the Caledonia, and reward them for choosing a smart night to plan a show, or you can check out the bluegrass of the Packway Handle Band at the Georgia Theatre. More on the latter here. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions, y'all.
I found out a few days ago that I have been nominated for Zaghareet Magazine's Best Kept Secret of 2007!!!
The Zaghareets are like the Academy Awards of Bellydancing in the U.S... I am the first Athens dancer to Ever be nominated and one of only a handful in the SE to make the nominations. I'm the longshot in the race and I need votes!

Fans of Americana/Rock Singer-Songwriters rejoice cause you can see Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter (of Bloodkin) at the Georgia Theatre or Adam Klein over at Flicker tonight. If that's not your bag, you can catch the 8-Track Gorilla and The Owen 4 over at Tasty World as well.

Tonite In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:39 AM | Permanent Link
Okay, so for reals, Jay Gonzalez is playing his piano bar stint tonight at Kingpins and I'm not just confused as to what day it is. The good thing about me confusing it, though is that in waiting till the real day, F'pole's done a story on these shows, which you can read here. I'm gonna go catch one of these real soon, likely tonite (which is a cooler way to spell "tonight")!

Jay Gonzalez's stint at Kingpin's continues as he performs in the piano bar section of the joint from around 8PM till 11 PM. Good atmosphere for chill drinks... not really easy to bowl and listen at the same time, but separately it'd be like to separate evenings in the same building... I don't know. I'm delirious. I'm going to bed. Go see Jay.
UPDATE: Man, I was delirious. It's Tuesday, not Wednesday. So, anyway, don't know what all's going on tonight. I know that Bob Livingston (who was in the Last Gonzo Band with Jerry Jeff Walker) is playing over at Flicker. That's all I got.

Completing the evil Taurus triumvirate around here is Vet Pharmacist, who actually has a birthday on Saturday, but since we don't post on Saturday, I'm posting this today. She used to feed us all sortsa funny news stories till she started Pharmacy School and now she just reads and occasionally makes suggestions.
She's sweet as can be and has an excellent sense of humor and is always bending over backwards for everyone else and is generally awesome and I hope she has an equally awesome birthday! (Plus, she's put up with me for a long time now, so I oughta have some nice things to say.)

FRI: The loud n' awesome sounds of Southern Bitch will rock through Tasty World tonight with Texan friends The Drams performing as well. The Drams, of course, are a new-ish band comprised of some members of Slobberbone, for those who remember them. More here.
SAT: Local songwriters Bo Bedingfield, Nic Goodson and Betsy Franck all perform at Tasty World. That's a pretty great lineup of singer-songwriters who'll probably keep the singer-songwriter thing from getting boring. One can only hope.

Here's a big toast to the guy who founded this site years ago. Computer Support built and rebuilt this whole site several times and saved it from demise when we lost our old server on short notice. Aside from services like that that keep us entertained, he played in a pretty great pop group around town years back too. Now, he's off in Oregon (and maybe soon to be Austin) living some kind of semi-adult life and biking and fighting cancer and who knows if he ever reads this site anymore...
Anyway, Happy Birthday CS! You're still old. But you're pretty awesome for a Taurus.

A variety of acts around town for all tastes... you can catch grizzled Americana of Don Chambers at Flicker, horn-filled pop/alt-rock of Nana Grizol at Detour, the alt-country of former Dashboard Saviors Todd McBride and Rob Veal at the 40 Watt, and the band I've never heard but it has members whose work I respect, Some Animal at the Caledonia. Rock.

Old people who remember their favorite rock n' roll bands of Athens past have a tough night tonight deciding whether they should go see Jay Gonzalez (Nutria, former Possibilities) perform his piano bar set up at Kingpin's or see the long-absent-from-the-stage Ben Spraker (Shut-Ups, former Ceiling Fan) perform at Flicker. Diego Catalan (aka Jim Wilson) also performs at the Flicker show. Jay's at 8-ish, The Flicker show's around 8:30-ish. So old folks are safe, either way.
Most Disturbing Songs Ever - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:39 AM | Permanent Link
So I'm trying to compile a definite list of the world's most subtly disturbing songs ever written. Basically, any song that is really creepy but doesn't necessarily mean to be. Either the lyrics go astray or based on who's singing them or whatever.
Here's what I've got so far (in no particular order), lyrics linked to through song title, video and audio evidence provided where available, and I welcome further suggestions...
Samples: "If I'm not afraid to love you, and I'm not free, Tell me what's so wrong With you lovin' me?"
"Am I wrong to fall So deeply in love with you... Knowing you've got a wife and two little children Depending on you too..."
A coupla' classic soul songs about cheating. They both have in common this factor: the song's protagonists have pretty much stepped past morality at the time the story's being told into sort of the mutual Stockholm Syndrome type situation. They're pretty much like, "Eff the other folks, we need to do this." There are tons of cheating songs out there, but the special lack of remorse in these characters (and almost a self-righteous bravado in some lines) makes them special cases for creepy. They're basically pro-cheating. Weird.
Sample: "And in the morning when he woke all I left him was a note I told him I am the flower you are the seed We walked in the garden We planted a tree"
The story basically goes as this: Ann Wilson's cruising the highway, finds some dude hitching in the rain, takes him to a nearby motel, they do it all night, and she ditches in the morning. Not sure if the metaphorical "tree" they planted is a kid or an std or what, but it's creepy nonetheless. Plus, later in the song she adds that if they meet again, she'll likely be with some other dude and he shouldn't try for her, but he should know that there's something the hitcher did for her that her fictional future man could not. How does she know this? Is she psychic for her own neuroses? What the hell? Actually, I think it might've been written by Mutt Lange... which makes it WAY grosser.
Sample: "Don't say a word my virgin child Just let your inhibitions run wild The secret is about to unfold Upstairs before the night's too old Tonights the night It's gonna be alright"
Yeah, it's about Mr. Stewart deflowering some girl. And the thing is, it starts out a little vague and subtle. It's a catchy tune with some solid musicianship and at its start you're thinking, "Hey, this is a pretty good song..." But the subtlety goes right out the window with the whole "Spread your wings and let me come inside" line. Seriously, I know Rod Stewart was hugely famous and all, but it all seems entirely inappropriate. Like he's secretly her uncle or something. He would, of course, then go on to descend into full cheese-ball-ness.
Here's a special treat to help illustrate the point... Spice Girl Emma Bunton performing the song with Rod! She even cringes at the aforementioned line:
"P.Y.T." by Michael Jackson (Stolen from a site I can't find again.)
Sample: "Hit The City Lights Then Tonight Ease The Lovin' Pain Let Me Take You To The Max I Want To Love You (P.Y.T.) Pretty Young Thing You Need Some Lovin' (T.L.C.) Tender Lovin' Care And I'll Take You There"
Okay, this is probably the cheapest joke I could make with an article like this, and it's a stolen one at that. But I would argue that it would be creepy even before the accusations because it's Michael Jackson and he says, "Pretty Young Thing". Granted, he is explicitly talking to a lady in this song. But why put the "young" in there? It matches the beat and all, but there are a variety of monosyllabic adjectives out there... why this one? Would you ever call your nearly-age-matched significant other "pretty young thing"? Just a little off-putting, that's all. Plus, you know, I want to stress to anyone who hasn't heard the song: this is Michael Jackson singing this.
There's not really a vid for this song, but here's some live clips someone's edited with the song underneath. Kinda funny:
Sample: "Let's do it in the mornin' Sweet breeze in the summer time Feeling your sweet face All laid up next to mine Sweet love in the midnight Good sleep, come mornin' light No worries 'bout nothin' Just gettin' good, just gettin' good Just gettin' good love"
For the moment, let's ignore the "I feel like a Butterfinger" line from this song (we can pass the blame to producer/songwriter Isaac Hayes on that one) and let's focus on what's really disturbing about the song: the alternating woman/man parts are sung by Mavis Staples and Pops Staples - her father! How weird is that? Double up on the fact that the Staple Singers were some kind of moral force that arose from the church to deliver spiritual and political anthems throughout the 50's, 60's, and 70's only to have this final successful single be all about love-making raunch. By any other group, or really even if you'd just gotten Isaac himself to do the lead male vocal, this would be another great 70's soul/funk hit about gettin' it on. As it stands, it's like some nasty Electra complex slow dance anthem.
Here's a snippet with an equally unlikely couple:
And in case you've never heard the song and want to actually creep yourself out with the real duet factor, here's a video featuring the full song set to beach scenes:
Sample: "Laughing like children, Living like lovers Rolling like thunder Under the covers And I guess that's why they call it the blues"
You all know you cringe at the line about him "rolling like thunder under the covers". And the thing is this: some people say it's because he's gay, but that's not it. The reason is two-fold: 1) It's a weird line. It's ambiguous and no one knows what that means and it doesn't sound appealing in the slightest and 2) He's Elton John. If you took a poll, I'd bet you'd find that 99.9% of gay people don't even find that concept appealing with him involved. Or at all. Plus, it's a woman in the song anyway. So, let's all stop the homophobic finger-pointing and agree that no one wants to roll like thunder under the covers and would prefer a more appealing simile.
Sample: "I was tired of my lady We'd been together too long Like a worn-out recording Of a favorite song So while she lay there sleeping I read the paper in bed And in the personal columns There was this letter I read"
Everyone knows the chorus to this song, and many know of its most brilliant use in a film (in the Norm McDonald vehicle "Dirty Work"), but often people miss the weirdo lyrics. Really, think about it, it's dude that's totally burned out in his relationship answering a personal ad for blind date, which turns out to have been placed by his girlfriend who was also burned out. In the song, they end up laughing about it and re-discovering each other. In life, we're talking about total disaster. Months of counseling after the break-up. And a total, systemic shock upon meeting eyes in the moment. Plus, the possible lifelong realization that you're both doomed to eventually bore the hell out of anyone else you meet despite how interesting you might seem at the start. But maybe that's the lesson The Pina Colada song has to teach us all in its own very creepy way.
To really soak it in, you have to see Rupert perform it:

Okay, it's Friday and if you're up to it, here's a coupla' conversation topics:
1) What albums do y'all think are truly "classics" from the 80's and 90's. I'm not talking about stuff that's edgy and set standards. I'm talking about stuff you really think you'll still listen to when you're 50. Stuff that stands the test of time. I know we've kinda had this conversation before, but I'm working my way through decades and I have a feeling I'll be hittin' those two up soon.
2) Really, anyone know the house sauce recipe for Cookies Cafe? (Anyone other than Robo.)
3) Bands: What's up with your upcoming albums?
4) Really, anyone got any good vacation ideas that don't cost much? Thanks in advance for keeping Friday not boring!

Some argument as to whether or not Atlanta really has a big "scene" going on. Cable & Tweed's got the MTV story that adds fuel to the fire. Is it just me or does it seem like MTV and Rolling Stone try and jump on something sometimes just to claim they're not out of touch?

A great poppier line-up at the Caledonia tonight with Fabulous Bird and the Titans of Filth. Or, if you want something louder... a little math-y maybe? ... then there's the seldom-appearing-but-supposedly-recording We Versus The Shark at the 40 Watt. Maybe it's me, but I think they always play their best shows there. They also win the award for "most forthcoming new website".

A variety for all tastes tonight. For metal, you can see Music Hates You at the 40 Watt, for a great piano-bar have a drink with Jay Gonzalez over at Kingpin's, for "unplugged" punk (I actually have no idea what that's gonna sound like) try Guff over at Tasty World, and for a sorta alt-bluegrass try Sweet Tooth Simpleton and The Simpletones at the Caledonia. The latter's releasing a CD with a great title: Santana's Greatest Hits! The Help also plays, the show is only $5 and you get a CD with admission AND it starts early - 8 PM!

FRI: The weekend kicks off with Superfluous Umlaut's Family Reunion Weekend starting tonight at the Caledonia with a happy hour show around 6PM featuring the Folk Yous. Later at the same venue, the Visitations and others will perform. Plus artwork, possible tattoos being given, and weirdos like Matt Hudgins will be there.
SAT (Happy Cinco de Mayo!): The annual Athens Human Rights Festival takes place downtown in College square once again. There's lotsa acts all day long (schedule) with Time Toy at 7:45 PM and Music Hates You at 8:30 PM-ish. All times are relative cause you know hippies and scheduling don't mix.
Later in the night, there's a some great lineups around town. For instance, The Diamond Center, Madeline, Nana Grizol all perform together at the 40 Watt. Or you can catch more singer-songwriter-y stuff at Nuci's Space with Fabulous Bird, Adam Klein, and Heath Tolleson (of the Last Picture Show).
SUN: The Human Rights Festival continues. For those not too hung over from Cinco (Take that Google Ads! Slipped in the obligatory alcohol reference! It's not a problem!), Hope For Agoldensummer takes the stage at 2:45 followed by some other acts.
I don't know how to make the accented character above, but you get the point. Hillary recently pointed out that even Google Ads in our Haloscan comments are pointing the finger at our unabashed love of drink.

Top Albums? - posted by Mail Clerk @ 1:54 AM | Permanent Link
I really wanted to hate the Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums of All Time ever since I refused to read it back when it was published 30-odd years ago during the VH1-inspired listing craze. Come to find out, it's actually a fairly solid list. (Much better, in fact, than the albums that actually sold the most.) A little low on country and missing a few rap records, but all in all, there aren't too many to argue with, especially in the top 200.

If that's not your speed, check out Welterweight (featuring ex-Kincaid folks) over at Flicker. They'll be changing their names to The Jersey Barrier after this show, so look for many missed posts by me in the future as I don't notice the new name in the listings!
