And that's not all.

Garbage Island performs a set of experimental who-knows-what at the 40 Watt tonight. Other bands are there... likely equally as experimental. So, if that's your thing, go be part of the experiment.
We Vs. Hall & Oates - posted by Mail Clerk @ 3:16 AM | Permanent Link
Sorry to y'all who've already gotten this over myspace, but I thought this bulletin from We Vs. The Shark was pretty funny and probably worth casting an Internet vote for just for the insider fun that would come if Sam wins...
sam + hall + oates
alright, here's the story: i, sam shark, have loved Hall & Oates for as long as i can remember. so when i found out that i could win a trip to hollywood to see them live by making a music video-- i did it.
and it's made it to the next round!
where you come in: you watch the video, laugh at sam's fake mustache, and vote for the video.
go here. my video is #8 (on youtube it's listed incorrectly as entry #10, not sure why, all the videos are listed incorrectly on youtube. you vote directly from the website though, so just remember #8!). don't forget the email confirmation part!
thanks! send me to hollywood! please! make my dreams come true! xo-- sam
Good luck, Sam! If you win, send us some pics and stories!

It's a heavy night at Tasty World tonight as The Dumps, Music Hates You, and Atlanta's Zoroaster perform. Not sure what else to say about these acts. If you're into the heavier stuff, you already know they're good. If not, you're probably not gonna go anyway.
Before all that, you can catch Fabulous Bird on WUGA's (91.7) "It's Friday" radio show starting at 4PM. There's also a coupla' late night dance options - either Bitch Switch at Little Kings, or the Krush Girls at Detour. Up to you, really.
SAT: You guessed it - more Team Clermont. The activities actually span the day. Starting at the ugly hour of 11 AM (what are we - animals?!?), you can go to East Athens Community Park to see Calvin Johnson do a solo performance during a kickball game. I don't really know anything about Calvin Johnson - but are we sure about this, y'all? Seriously? Read more about it here.
Anyway, when you're done with that weird stuff, the Go Bar's hosting a free afternoon show with Benjy Ferree and Abra Moore who I also know nothing about. So, yeah, it could be weird too. Not sure, but it doesn't involve 11 AM or kickball.
Finally, the night brings the annual Team Clermont Prom at the 40 Watt (not to be confused with whatever MMJ pulled earlier this year). Tonight's prom features Bobby Conn and Twin Powers and you can read much more about all these goings on here. Seriously, make Lucas happy. Go.
SUN: Tired yet? Good cause all day long is the Wynburn Blvd Fest featuring a buncha folks you can read more about here. One act is Dark Meat who is performing The Stooges' Fun House in much smaller numbers. Here's the schedule:
Stereo Campbell (12 p.m.), Matt "Pistol" Stoessel (12:45 p.m.), Diet Echo (1:25 p.m.), Honey (2:15 p.m.), Mikey Dwyer & the Starter Kits (3 p.m.), The Ginger Envelope (3:50 p.m.), Ryan Hetrick (4:50 p.m.), Sleepy Horses (5:20 p.m.), Still, Small Voice & the Joyful Noise (6:10 p.m.), Mother Jackson (7 p.m.), Dead Confederate (7:50 p.m.) Deaf Judges (8:40 p.m.), Dark Meat (9:15 p.m.)
Bring some money with you to donate to Nuci's for this fest. Well worth it.
Then, that night, there's an afterparty for the Classic City Rollergirls Derby over at Kingpins. Nutria and Heavy Petty are possible performers, but F'pole's not sayin' for sure. Anyone got the scoop?
Meanwhile, next door, the 40 Watt's hosting a free show featuring Music Hates You, Sweet Teeth and several more loud/experimental acts. Even if you're just taking a break from the Caledonia, not a bad idea to check out.
If you're looking for a good place to get your pre-game on, the Caledonia's got a great happy hour lineup starting around 6 PM featuring Lake City, Folklore, Jesse Flavin, and a coupla other acts as well.

For anyone that's been searching for the Harvey Milk reissues of "My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment Of What My Love Could Be", "Courtesy & Good Will Towards Men", and "The Pleaser", they're available through Relapse Records site now. Thanks to Sloan for the heads up (he and I had had a conversation a while back about how difficult those were to find on CD).

There's a buncha stuff going on tonight - especially for a Tuesday. Early on, as we mentioned yesterday, Bo Bedingfield and The Wydelles will perform at Cutter's Pub for an art auction opening tonight between 6 and 9 PM. All proceeds benefit the Sabina Hartley-Burke Fund.
Later, at the Secret Squirrel, you can catch Sweet Teeth (the new collaboration between members of Dark Meat and Long Legged Woman). That show starts at 8, so as not to interfere with the following show...
We Versus The Shark performs at the Caledonia for its Athens stop on the tour supporting their newest release: the CD/DVD EP Of Bees / We Want a New Government, Not Odd Time Signatures. Ever awesome, this band's surely gonna be on fire after all that tourin'.
Tomorrow's Benefit for Sabina - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 12:31 PM | Permanent Link
It's a day early, but I wanted to try to give folks an advanced reminder. We posted about this benefit for Sabina previously, so please take a look at this blog for more details. It's tomorrow at Cutter's Pub on Clayton St. from 6 to 9. Bar proceeds will go to the fund, and there will be free music by Bo Beddingfield and (most of) The Wydelles. Your support will be appreciated.

UPDATE 2: Okay, so there's no show at all at the Caledonia tonight. But I did just read about the one at the Secret Squirrel with Telenovela and a buncha other folks, if you're jonesing for a show.
Update: We were just informed that the Nutria show tonight is cancelled due to a family emergency; however, The Jellybricks will still be performing.
Our pals in Nutria perform at the Caledoner tonight along with a Pennsylvania band named The Jellybricks who I know nothing about. Nutria, however, has been performing lotsa new stuff lately and is in the midst of recording a new album (like always). And as usual, all the new stuff's that great brand of catchy pop that's rarer and rarer these days. Also, their bassist is a renowned local poet. Worth a night out.

FRI: Andrew's back in down, so the Dromedary Quartet is having a reunion performance at the Melting Point. Kenosha Kid opens the show. From someone who doesn't traditionally appreciate "world music", I dig on some of Dromedary's stuff and their talent's of course as proficient at you could want - again, I'm not expert, but it sounds good. More here.
SAT:Je Suis France is playing at Kaya's house... The France makes their way back to the Caledonia to perform - hopefully with copies of their new LP Afrikan Majik in hand, Folklore and newcomers Night Moves open the show. Sometimes I just set "That Don't Work That Well For Us" on repeat. It rocks. More here.
UPDATE: Totally forgot that Casper & The Cookies and Titans Of Filth are playing at the Secret Squirrel on Saturday night earlier on (not sure what time), but there's also a late night set by new hardcore favorites Pride Parade at around 1 or 2 AM. That's where the late night jam is.

Not much going on here lately while I return from vacation and deal with all the issues installing a new harddrive brings to someone who's a computer moron. Anyway, someone who's trustworthy but will remain nameless was kind enough to pass along this bit of info regarding the recent closing of Flicker:
Flicker Theatre & Bar abruptly closed for good on Monday and is currently for sale. Nothing dire happened; the owner recently bought a fixer-upper house and decided she needed to devote her time and capital to that project and get out of the club business. No word on prospective buyers.
Originally devoted to showing classic films, the theatre gradually transformed into a great place to see intimate "unplugged" shows. Over the course of its six years, Flicker hosted jazz, bluegrass, poetry, magic, and comedy in addition to classic sets from Patterson Hood, Don Chambers & Goat, and many other local (and national) acts. It was also one of the best venues in town for local visual artists. And of course, in keeping with its film theme, free popcorn.
Hopefully the new owners will preserve some of the qualities that made Flicker a unique venue. But in the meantime, it will be sorely missed.

In case you missed it, Of Montreal has announced they will be playing the 40 Watt for Halloween, right smack dab in the middle of their North American fall tour. And I figured that since there are Girl Talk fans here, they might want to read the full article. And in other Athens news, John Bell, lead singer of Widespread Panic, got to throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game this weekend, during a run of three sold out shows at the Chicago Theatre. Here's a few pictures, a video of the pitch.

Mail Clerk is on vacation, but being the dedicated blogger that he is, he wrote this before he left.
Happy Friday the 13th! FRI: Peter Alvanos, again determined to play a series of odd venues, will be at the J. Scott Hair Salon at 5 PM today for a sort-of Happy Hour show. Odd, huh? Also forgot to mention his Wednesday morning stint at Mama’s Boy this week…prolly will forget next week too, so just keep it in mind.
The big news of the night, for me, is that Michael is playing what is supposedly their final show ever at the Caledonia. You can read more about them here, but they were a great band around here a few years back – and some really nice guys to boot (anyone who’s dealt with Bob at Nuci’s Space knows what I’m talking about). The Ginger Envelope and Some Animal open the show.
For something heavier, The Dumps are at Repent or for something lighter there’s Jonathan Byrd and the McMaken Bros. over at the Melting Point. For something altogether different, there’s some freak show at the 40 Watt which I know absolutely nothing about.
SAT: You know what…I’m kinda at a loss for the first time in a while here. I know there’s some belly dancing going on at the 40 Watt…but other than that, I don’t know what to recommend. Leave suggestions in the comments cause I’m on vacation. Word.
Desktop Publisher’s additions:
Also for Friday night, consider checking out the Timber CD Release Party for their new album, For Never and Always, at Little Kings. They will go on at midnight, and will be preceded by Kevin and Cathleen Gilbert at 10, and Caroline Monroe and her band at 11:00. There will be drinks specials, and of course, cornhole. And if you live in Atlanta, consider checking out Bo Beddingfield and The Wydelles tomorrow at the Star Bar. They are firing on all cylinders lately, and should not be missed.

Calling All Artists and Art Lovers! - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 11:36 AM | Permanent Link
Since we're on the subject of benefits, here's a message from TDJ friend Jenn Bryant that we wanted to share. I'll be there to help support the cause, and I hope you will be too.
Are you an artist, or art lover? Please read on!
On 5/31 of this year, Athens lost a lovely young artist. Sabina Hartley-Burke was a 9 year old girl and artist who lost her battle with cancer. You can find out more about her at www.simplysabina.com.
In her honor, friends of the family are hosting the Sabina Art Auction Reception on Tuesday, July 24th, for viewing of the art. The Reception will be at Cutters Pub and Grill on E. Clayton from 6 pm to 9 pm. The art will then be auctioned off on eBay during the following week.
Many area artists have donated works for viewing before the online eBay auction begins. Some works included in the event are from Michael Stipe, Jennifer Hartley, Jason Thrasher, and Chris Bilheimer, to name a few.
We are still gathering art! Unfortunately we have to have the pieces in our possession by Friday July 20, so keep that in mind.
The Reception will feature live music by one of our favorite local musicians, Bo Bedingfield, and a few others. Appetizers will be generously donated by The Globe, and the kind folks at Cutters are giving the Sabina Fund all the proceeds from the drink sales for those hours.
We will ask for a nominal donation at the door ($3-$5) to enjoy the festivities.
Please come out, enjoy the art of our community and help us raise some money to help defray the medical expenses incurred by Sabina's care.
(Local artists still have time to donate works to us- we will accept art pieces up until the 20th of July with a brief artist bio. Please send me a message if you wish to participate!)
Love to all, and all for love... ~j

There's a benefit for Food Not Bombs at Little Kings tonight. It features Cars Can Be Blue, Titans of Filth, and Deaf Judges amongst others. One thing I forgot to mention about Cars Can Be Blue last time (when I mentioned the Fred Schneider props is that they also got a pretty decent review from Something Awful's Demo Roundup a few years back. And that dude hates everything.
Also, my bad for not mentioning the "Extra Special People Benefit" yesterday. It was a great lineup and a fantastic cause which I believe in wholeheartedly. Just slipped my mind, but I hope it went well.

Sleepy Horses' Nic Goodson is performing at the Caledonia. Also on the bill that night, despite what sounds like an odd pairing, is Kenosha Kid. Sure to be eclectic. Probably good, too.

Former Trucker Jason Isbell brings his new band The 400 Unit (all folks from around Muscle Shoals) to the 40 Watt to debut material from his new album "Sirens Of The Ditch" (to be released tomorrow - or likely tonight at the show). If you're interested, there's a bit F'pole article here. It's a little more pop-oriented than his DBT-stuff. Haven't heard the whole album, though.

Athens Magazine Hits The Music - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
I was tidying up the waiting area in my office yesterday, when I noticed that Athens Magazine's last issue featured folks I know on the cover - again, something no one had let me know. Turns out, that's their AthFest issue. Don Chambers, Dan Nettles, Mamie Fike Simonds, Wendy Musick, William Tonks and Eric Harris contribute to this sort of group interview about the scene that is Athens. Broad and a bit vague, but a good read nonetheless. What a weird supergroup that would be.

FRI: Big weekend at the Caledonia... starting with tonight's combo of Titans of Filth, Christopher's Liver, and The New Sound of Numbers. The whole weekend there is sorta a mini, local Popfest thing going on (not actually affiliated w/Popfest, mind you). Anyway, should be a good night of music there.
Also, frequent TDJ commenter DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be spinning music that has nothing to do with Truman Capote down at Little Kings. It starts at 11:30 and the show's called "Summer in the City". Wyatt says, "Expect hot, gritty tunes from Lovin' Spoonful, Giorgio Moroder, Black Lips, Outkast, New Order, House, Rap, Soul, etc." Sounds eclectically fun.
But before all that, y'all can tune your radios or fancy-shmancy Internets to 91.7 at 4 PM to hear Sweet-Tooth Simpleton & The Simpletones perform on WUGA's "It's Friday". Says Andy: "Of course we wont be doing any of the dirtier material, but we wont lame it up too much." Y'all oughta tune in.
SAT: Another night of great pop over at the Caledonia. Tonight's lineup features Folklore, Ham 1, Night Moves (a personal favorite amongst new bands), and Big Gray. It really is a great lineup the likes of which you don't get too much this time of year. Well worth a night out to see.
"I'm going to be playing a solo show this Saturday at Lil' Kings along with ... a possible wild card appearance from Patrick Carey of the Ginger Envelope. Virgin Forest includes former Athenians Scott and Elizabeth who contributed to Phosphorescent from time to time. I'd love to be more specific with start times and the like but, as you know, these things can be uh, malleable. Between 9 and 10?"
Not sure if he means The Good Ship is not actually playing or if he's doing a solo show in addition.
Finally, if you've heard about the "Live Earth" benefit this weekend ("7 concerts on 7 continents over 24 hours"), and you wanna catch it, the Georgia Theatre will be showing it this Saturday starting at 5PM and it's free. I haven't heard a lot about this show, but given the name, I'm almost 100% sure that it involves Sting and U2. Possibly Seal. All jokes aside, sounds like a good cause and I should think/hope there are some good acts involved. Visit Action Climate's site for more info on the screening.
New Eskimos Record - For Free - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:33 AM | Permanent Link
So, the new record from the Eskimos, who haven't played live in forever but who were a staple in Athens several years back have decided to release their new album online for free (and have placed several CD-R versions in records stores around town as well, also free). Not sure how long this has been available because even though we're friends with some of those folks, they decided to let us find out through the friggin' Flagpole. Seriously bands, especially those who comment here and/or are people we know personally - we will print legitimate news and not just rumors and opinion if you send it. We do sometimes check our e-mail box. Not a lot, but sometimes.
Anyway, I digress. Long story short, the record's called Kola and you can get it here. I can't tell you if it's any good because I haven't heard it yet.
