This Weekend In Athens

New! Shorter! Lazier!

FRI: Man, it's a good night for beats:

DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms (WUOG's "Crunk In The Lobby IX" starting at 9 PM)
Elite Tha Showstoppa, Son 1 (Tasty World)
Madeline (Flicker)
Ying Yang Twins (Georgia Theatre)

SAT (GO DAWGS!): Check it out, Coulier's back for one night only... on the same night as another rare appearance. Luckily their crowds pretty much don't overlap:

Disappearing, Reappearing Leverett

You know, I hadn't seen Clay Leverett around in a while. Turns out he's on tour with Bright Eyes. Thanks to Matt for sending over these screen captures (click to englarge).

Apparently, he and Steve Carell are friends now.

Tonight In Athens

It's a night for broad tastes. Firstly, you can catch Mouser and Cinemechanicha over at Nuci's Space around 8 PM. Or, around the same time, you can see our pal Mark Brut over at Flicker.

Later in the night, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit arrive in town once again in support of Jason's debut solo release Sirens Of The Ditch. Sleepy Horses open the show up at the 40 Watt.

Or, if that's not your thing, you can catch Peter Erchick and The 63 Crayons over at Little Kings.

Tonight In Athens

Our pal and yours Jay Gonzalez is back working his magic in the Kingpin's lounge. He's covering all sortsa tunes and even mentions possibly doing whole albums in the near future. Hopefully we'll get a heads up on what he's gonna play on those nights. This week, all I know is there's gonna be some "Sister Christian" and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" played.

Also, Venice Is Sinking will be the musical guest this week at "Figgie's At 5", which I believe is at 5PM at the Georgia Museum Of Art, if I'm not mistaken. The cost is $5, which also gets you 2 drinks and snacks... so pretty good deal all-in-all.

Help Nuci's

In case you don't get Nuci's email updates, here's two new ways you can help them. The first one being extremely easy, I just tried it (though it didn't require me to download a toolbar as it suggests below).
Here’s how you can raise money without spending any of your own!

1. Good Search

GoodSearch is a Yahoo! Search engine that sends a tiny amount of money toward the charity of your choice every time you search the web using GoodSearch.
- First you have to download the toolbar.
- Then choose Nuçi’s Space as your charity.
If we spread the word about this thing it could end out being a really good fundraiser.
http://www.goodsearch.com/

2). SunTrust MyCause

SunTrust Bank will donate $100 to Nuçi’s Space every time someone opens a new Personal or Business Checking account from now until October 12, 2007.

Here’s how it works:
* Open your NEW SunTrust account
* You must make at least one purchase on your new check card by November 15th.
* After you’ve made at least one purchase, fill out the MyCause Redemption Form.
You have to fill this form out by November 15th.

Congrats!
You’ve just donated $100 to Nuçi’s Space without spending a DIME

Scene of the Crime

Today is the release day for soul singer Bettye LaVette's album Scene of the Crime. Her backing band on the record is Athens' own Drive-By Truckers. Here's a video about the making of the record, as well as some great pictures. They cover songs by Willie Nelson, Elton John, and the late great Eddie Hinton, among others. Spooner Oldham and legendary bassist David Hood also appear on the album. (Photo credit: Kevin Kiley)

Tonight In Athens

The show at the 40 Watt tonight is packed with The Apples In Stereo headlining. VHS Or Beta's there too and a coupla' other acts. Gonna be a big mid-week show for those of y'all who can spare the sleep. Also, before that, Sanni Baumgartner will be at Flicker.

Junk Mail Gold

Recently I received the best junk mail of my life, courtesy of the NRA:

Seriously, nothing makes those around you comfortable like a large duffel bag with "NRA" written on the side of it. Awesome. As a bonus, they go ahead and send you a membership card with your name on it, and ask you to pay the fees to essentially "activate it" and start getting some weird magazine. That's like providing all-you-can-eat chicken wings and then asking for a donation for the experience of having cole slaw as a side. Who cares at that point?

Anyway, I've got an NRA card with my name on it and that rules. The duffel bag would be kinda awesome, though. So maybe not cole slaw. Maybe like french fries or something.

This Weekend In Athens

Well, it's an outta-town game, but the in-town bands still aren't coming out in droves per se...

FRI: Ham 1 performs at the 40 Watt in celebration of its new album The Captain's Table. Also, this is just ahead of their tour with Vic Chesnutt and Liz Durrett.

There's also Birds & Wire at the Melting Point or earlier on there's Push! at Flicker.

SAT: Ohio's Magnolia Electric Co. comes to rock the 40 Watt, who've hosted several good outta-towners lately. Good to see.

There's also a rare occurrence at the Georgia Theatre where you can see Contraband open a show, the another band who I'm not familiar with plays a show, then Ninjaband closes the show. That's right, two video-game-winning math rock performances for the price of one. Totally awesome.

Later, you can catch Bitch Switch at Little Kings if you're in the mood to shake ass. Or, before all that, Timber will be at Schoolkids Records at around 4 PM.

SUN: There's actually two good Sunday shows. Who'd've thunk it? Anyway, for the folks with loud, loud tastes, the Dumps will be at Transmetropolitan.

Meanwhile, over at the secret squirrel, DJ Mahogany will be spinning after a performance by The Lickity Splits.

Tonight In Athens

Lots of variety around tonight. Over at Tasty World, there's the Dumps and Magic Missile. At the Go Bar, there's Claire Campbell. And finally over at Little Kings, Deaf Judges'll be kickin' it.

Tonight In Athens

Deerhunter returns to town once again to play the 40 Watt in a Secret Squirrel inspired lineup to benefit the nonprofit Georgia Lawyers for the Arts. 'Powers and a few other folks are gonna be playing.

Or, across town, Don Chambers is gonna be at Tasty World.

Oh, and a big PS from a few days ago... didn't mean to inadvertently compare Blonde Redhead and Limp Bizkit. The stories were similar, that's all. My bad.

Tonight In Athens

Lots going on for a Tuesday. First off, there's a powerhouse lineup of local pop at the 40 Watt with The New Sound Of Numbers, Nana Grizol, and Folklore. And if you missed him on Saturday night, Elite Tha Showstoppa will be at Tasty World tonight as will be Music Hates You. Finally, before all that, Atlanta metal act Zoroaster will play WUOG's "Loud Fast Rules" around 10 PM.

Randy & The Mob

Hey y'all, Jenn Bryant's got a movie recommendation for ya'. I haven't seen this one yet, but I've seen all his other stuff and it's good, so this one's gotta be good:
We have some friends who are releasing a great movie next week. It's called Randy and the Mob, and it is hilarious.

Ray McKinnon and Walton Goggins have asked me to help spread the word and I am glad to do so - it's a wonderful movie! It's not a big movie, so they really need to have some turnout at the theatres. If you possibly can, go see it! And pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested.

Please check out the trailer, and go see the movie in a theatre near you if you like it.

Thank you so much!
Jenn

Tonight In Athens

Outta-towners Blonde Redhead perform at the 40 Watt tonight. It's weird, before they became critical darlings, a friend of mine (who's really not a music nerd in any way whatsoever) was in some crappy used CD shop in Pasadena and heard their first album playing in store. He impulse purchased the hell out of it, and I told him that was a dumb idea and that it was likely he'd be sick of it in a month and never hear of that band again. Man, was I wrong.

Almost as wrong as that time I had to sit through a Limp Bizkit set before they were famous and remarked, "Well, I'm absolutely sure they people will never be famous, so at least this is the last time I'll ever have to hear them." True story.

This Weekend In Athens

Happy Birthday this weekend to Sarah, Hillary, and Tasty World (which opened right about the time I first came to Athens). Go Virgos...

FRI: Dark Meat makes Athens a tour stop on their recent string of tour dates. Hope this means the album's already recorded, but we'll see. I hope there's some new stuff at the show. They're playing with Long-Legged Woman at the 40 Watt, btw.

Meanwhile, next door at the Caledonia, Cinemechanica and Dead Confederate rock the stage. I thought that seemed like an odd pairing, but they're two competent bands who have a decent crowd around, so why not?

There's also Freeball at Tasty World as part of their 10th Anniversary celebration. Later that night, the Krush Girls is/are DJing upstairs. Or you can catch Kenosha Kid at Mercury Lounge. Or DJ Mahogany at Go Bar.

But before all or most of that, Casper & The Cookies will be performing at Flicker somewhere around 8:30 and WAY before all that, King Of Prussia will be playing UGA's Herty Field (right there in the middle of north campus at noon. They're pretty good, so it's a good lunch break idea for you University employees.

SAT (Go Dawgs!): Local MCs Bear and Elite Tha Showstoppa perform (amongst others) at the Caledonia as part of a big hip-hop night. I know I'm gonna catch hell for sayin' this, but not a lot else going on that night.

Tonight In Athens

Bloodkin and Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads give a double dose of Americana rock at the 40 Watt tonight. Both have been slowing down the frequently of shows dramatically lately, so the double-lineup is a cool thing to see.

Also, Nic Goodson at Flicker.

Internet People

An amusing watch.

Tonight In Athens

Atlanta's The Black Lips return to Athens to rock the 40 Watt tonight. Was it them or Deerhunter that used to be banned from the 40 Watt? Can't remember that conversation. Anyway, both are un-banned at this point, so let the rock proceed.

Tonight In Athens

The 40 Watt's hosting another of those big free shows that's like being at the Secret Squirrel, but cleaner and with more bathrooms (unless you count the outdoor option). Tonight's show features Pegasuses-XL and Deaf Judges amongst others.

Meanwhile, down at the Caledonia, The H.E.A.P. Project and Honey perform. And there's some Band tribute band called The Last Waltz Ensemble playing at UGA's Legion Field to raise money for the Georgia Firefighter Burns Foundation.

This Weekend In Athens

Literally just walked in from school (check the time of this post - no B.S.). So, it's a quick one...

FRI: The Eskimos play a very rare show tonight accompanied by Bo Bedingfield & The Wydelles, & Timber at the Caledonia.

Or, you can check out Russian Spy Camera and Sweet Tooth Simpleton & The Simpletones at Little Kings.

SAT (Go Dawgs!): Sleepy Horses & Garbage Island play at the Caledonia.

Why is it so sleepy around here? Are bands taking time off to watch the games this fall? Weird.

UPDATE:
Totally glanced right over the fact that Mark Olson is playing the Melting Point on Saturday night. Oh, and the Timber show listed above is a Happy Hour Show, just so you know.

BBQ in the ATL

It's official. We've raved about Fox Bros. BBQ on here before, but I wanted to let the Atlanta folks (and Athens folks that visit Atlanta) know that they have officially opened their debut restaurant on Dekalb Ave.

After having served their bbq at Smith's Olde Bar for the past few years, and prior to that, in their backyards for many parties (that I attended...good to have neighbors and friends that cook a lot!), these twin brothers have finally taken the plunge into opening their own place. Lots of folks here will tell you this is the best bbq they've ever had, but read what the critics say if you don't believe us. Their mac & cheese is to die for, as well as their potato salad, and their white bbq sauce is heavenly too. They are currently only open for dinner, but I'm sure that will change once they get their feet wet.

Warning: don't look at the menu if you are hungry. And yes, we've been trying to get them to open a downtown Athens location for awhile now. Maybe one day...

Batter Up!

I don't advocate violence to penguins, but I do advocate wasting some time on this addictive game. Post your best scores here if you are competitive.

Russian Retirement?

I'm bored, and this was entertaining. Is this Russian lady rolling, or just a big fan of the music?

Tonight In Athens

Our pal Jay Gonzalez (the one on the right) is back on the piano (or pseudo-piano... not to give any trade secrets away) at Kingpins tonight playing the hits, the requests, originals, and album tracks he just happens to feel like playing. Good guy, that Jay. Talented too.

Tonight In Athens

Powers, a new band COMPOSED of members of We Versus The Shark, Cinemechanica, 300 Cobras, and Contraband, plays its second show ever tonight at the Secret Squirrel. Honestly, I have no idea what they sound like, but that's a pretty impressive "composed of" list.
