Happy Halloween, y'all! As is traditional, it's a covers night all around town. Here's just a sampling of what's going on:
Bloodkin plays the Rolling Stones' Some Girls at the Georgia Bar (where else?).
We Versus The Shark play the Violent Femmes, Vermont plays Daniel Johnston, Some folks from Dark Meat cover songs by The Dicks, plus Misfits by various folks and Moldy Peaches covers by Cars Can Be Blue all at Little Kings.
Of Montreal plays some album that's yet to be revealed at the 40 Watt. (SOLD OUT)
Plus, the traditional covers set by the Shut-Ups featuring many guest appearances down at the Caledonia. Opening that show will be ZZ Topless - bet you can guess the covers and costumes on that one.
Playing not-named-as-covers sets are the Dictatortots at Tasty World, William Tonks at the Georgia Bar, and The New Sound of Numbers and 63 Crayons at Go Bar.
And as usual, our pal Jay Gonzalez will be at Kingpins playing piano covers - starting early at 7 PM so he can put on a big beard for a later rock show.

So, the reason I wasn't posting last Thursday is because I went to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame to check out their year-long exhibit, "Otis Redding: I've Got Dreams To Remember". It's effectively turned that place into the Graceland for Otis fans. It's a huge room full of pretty much every piece of Otis memorabilia in existence (save that piece of the fateful plane, which is is the regular rock hall of fame, I think).
Just thought I'd put it out there that if you're at all a fan of Otis Redding, y'oughta go check it out. Well worth it. As for the rest of the museum, mostly I could take it or leave it. But there were some cool Allman Bros. and B-52's things, as well as a huge display of R.E.M. stuff designed and installed by Krush Girl Chris Bilheimer. There's even a poster from Pylon's first "last show", but you could likely find that at Wuxtry anyway.

Hip-hop Homecoming starts tonight and lasts through the weekend. It's a relatively new "tradition", and has built to a whole week of shows now. Not bad. If you like hip-hop, this is your week to sample pretty much every local MC. Tonight, DJ Mahogany'll be spinning at Rumor (near whatever the Athens Burger Factory is now, down by Junkman's... for those who don't venture that way often).
Also, Ice Cream Socialists'll be at the Caledonia, if you missed 'em there last time or are just hankerin' for more..

This Weekend In Athens - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 5:26 PM | Permanent Link
I'm posting this now since I'll be in late tomorrow. Don't want to make you kids wait!
Lots of shenanigans this weekend...rather than link to the bands, I linked to the venues so you can go to their websites for more details.
Friday: There's a big hip hop show over at the Tasty World with Ishues, and a slew of others. It should be noted that all proceeds from the event go to the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.
Around 9 p.m. or so, you can catch Bob Hay & the Jolly Beggars and The Squallz over at the Go Bar. Later at11 p.m., following the band, you can catch DJ Baby Pandas. There's the excellent music of Kenosha Kid over at the Mercury Lounge and that's at 8 p.m. so you could still hit that and another show if you dare.
There's another benefit over at Nuci's Space tonight. This one is for the disability group Multiple Choice. The bill features the wonderful ladies Kimberly Morgan and Betsy Franck and her Bare Knuckle Band, and a band called Tritonic, whom I'm not familiar with. More info on the event here. Good times to be had over at the 40 Watt tonight for Orange Twin night, and I must add, for just a mere TWO DOLLARS. This bill includes Dark Meat (however, tonight's show is Soft Meat, more of an acoustic-based set), The Instruments, and Elf Power. Jeff Fallis will also be reading some poetry, I take it, and there is a movie trailor (done by E6 folks) being shown too. And speaking of E6, you can also catch a solo set by Peter Erchick over at Flicker around 8:30 p.m.
There's also a band whose description sounds intriguing over at the Caledonia tonight. They are calling it the Caledonia Social Club and it's a band with members from A. Armada, Masarati, Je Suis France, Paper Lions, and Macha. Note that this starts at 8 p.m.
Lots of early shows tonight and no doubt, lots of music to catch!
On a non-music related note, there's something called a Full Moon Canoe Ride/Hike at Sandy Creek Park tonight that is cheap and perhaps fun. Read more here.
Saturday: The Caledonia is hosting an emcee battle. Registration at 9 p.m., music at 10 p.m. and the battle goes down at 11 p.m.
Fresh off of tour with Vic Chesnutt and Liz Durrett, Ham1 will be giving an in-store performance over at Schoolkids Records at 5 p.m.
There's also Push at the Go Bar and the 40 Watt is hosting Nebula, Bonk and Zoroaster.
Rock on, y'all.

Mail Clerk is out of town for a few days, so I'm taking the reigns. Let's see....
Looks like we're too late on mentioning that Peter Alvanos was playing Mama's Boy at 9 a.m. today; however, do not fear because according to his Flagpole blurb, he will be cruising around town playing different venues all day long, while being filmed. Seriously...that's what it says. Don't know about you folks, but I'll be checking out The Hold Steady tonight with openers Art Brut and Demander over at the 40 Watt. Here's the lowdown on that show. We also have The Ones over at Flicker tonight and 63 Crayons over at the Caledonia. There's something called Tobiases-XL over at Little Kings tonight, where all the members of the band Gemini Cricket's are dressing up in tribute to local musician Jeff Tobias. And on your way home, maybe stop by the Go Bar for a Twin Powers DJ set.

Don Chambers & GOAT (yes, the full band - contrary to what you may read elsewhere) headline the 40 Watt tonight. Been a while since that lineup's been together for the show (don't think this means the full original lineup since I believe some folks have moved). Anyway, if you're up for a rock show, there it is.
There's also Kenosha Kid and Some Animal at Flicker and our pal Jay Gonazalez at Kingpin's.
UPDATE: Okay, so maybe the person who told me it was the full band wasn't right about it being the full band. Hopefully he'll show up to clear that up.
Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:00 AM | Permanent Link
If you're into good ole' rock n' roll, then you can catch Mikey Dwyer & The Starter Kits and Honey over at Tasty World. For something softer, there's Madeline at Little Kings. Finally, there's plenty o' loud with way-outta-towners Boris over at the 40 Watt.
New Japancakes - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:14 AM | Permanent Link
Hey, did y'all know that there was a new Japancakes record released a coupla' weeks ago? Me neither. But it was and it's called Giving Machines. Hopefully they'll play soon. If not for that little news scroller thingy that CS put at the bottom our site, I'd've never noticed.

Well, fresh off his latest record sale, it appears that DJ Kurtwood will be spinning in the early evening somewhere. F'pole says it's the 40 Watt, but their site says they're closed. Not sure what that means. Anyone?
I think the big show for the evening is Holly Golightlyand the Broke-Offs over at Tasty World. Opening that set will be former Star Room Boy Dave Marr (with at least another SRB-er, Philip McArdle with him, not sure how many others). There's also a Folklore show over at Mercury Lounge.

FRI: A scattered night tonight, but you can still catch the Ice Cream Socialists at the Caledonia, the Packway Handle Band at Farm 255, the Oak Ridge Boys at the Classic Center (seriously), and/or dance the night away with the Krush Girl(s) at the 40 Watt.
SAT: A big pop night (and a multiple-performance night for Ian and Jimmy) as Fairmount Fair, Gemini Cricket, and Titans Of Filth share a bill at the Caledonia - there's also some other band I've never heard of.
Other options around town include Guff playing at the Skate Park of Athens at some point during the day, Long-Legged Woman at the 40 Watt, or Sleepy Horses at Flicker.
SUN:Redneck GReece Delux returns to Jot 'Em Down BBQ to entertain.
On Sunday, October 21, 2007, the Athens Historical Society will present R.E.M. in Perspective: An Athens History. The event will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the historic Seney-Stovall Chapel at 201 North Milledge Avenue in Athens, Georgia, where R.E.M. just finished recording its latest studio album.
The program will feature two previously unscreened vintage videos of R.E.M. and two panel discussions, as well as rare video clips relating to Athens compiled from R.E.M.’s own archives and recent performance footage.
The featured videos include an R.E.M. practice session recorded at Wuxtry Records in Decatur prior to the release of their first record, and an early performance at the 688 Club in Atlanta. The video of the practice session, filmed by Wuxtry Records owner Dan Wall, is the earliest known footage of R.E.M. playing together as a band.
Biographer Tony Fletcher, author of Remarks Remade: The Story of R.E.M., will open the session with his observations on Athens’ place in R.E.M.’s history. A follow-up panel will discuss R.E.M.’s Athens musical and artistic roots. Panelists include producer John Keane, music blogger Frank White, Wuxtry Records owner Dan Wall, Athens music historian Paul Butchart, former manager of The B-52’s Maureen McLaughlin, with music journalist Mark Mobley, as moderator.
A second panel will examine R.E.M.’s social, civic, political, economic and preservation impact on Athens and the world beyond. Scheduled participants are former Athens mayor Gwen O’Looney, community activist Tim Johnson, historic preservation advocate Smith Wilson, former 40 Watt Club co-owner and founder of Flagpole magazine Jared Bailey, Weaver D’s restaurant owner Dexter Weaver, with Athens historian and preservationist Milton Leathers, as moderator.
The program is being taped for later broadcast and video release. Seating is limited. The event is ticketed but free of charge. To reserve a ticket, email Athens Historical Society or call (706) 789-3452.
Filmmaking with a Southern Touch - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 9:55 AM | Permanent Link
One option for the weekend is to to visit Cine' where great Georgia filmmaker (and actor) Ray McKinnon will be showing his new movie, as well as taking Q&A from the audience. I'm a big fan of both his movies, Accountant and Chrystal, and highly recommend those flicks if you've never seen them.
Here's the lowdown:
GUEST FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE: FRIDAY/SATURDAY OCTOBER 19-20 Cine'
From Academy Award winning director RAY MCKINNON, comes RANDY AND THE MOB, a feel-good, slice of Southern life comedy. Winner of the Audience Choice Award at the 2007 Nashville Film Festival and shot on location in and around Atlanta by all Southern filmmakers, RANDY AND THE MOB is a powerful reminder of the strength of Southern roots, where love and family can usually be counted on to trump all adversities.
Ray McKinnon will be in attendance to present and discuss his film at selected screenings: Friday 10/19 @ 7:00p + 9:45p and Saturday 10/20 @ 4:00p + 7:00p
New Long-Legged Woman CD (Already) - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
From Lars:
Long Legged Woman- 'Newtown Nights' CDr $7PPD: If there's one thing that connects all the seemingly disparate pieces of Long Legged Woman, it is REVERB. On its last album as a duo, LLW scales back the overwhelming psychedelic noise-rock and tape collage for a more intimate recording. Newtown Nights is like a lost acid-folk/-rock album washed in deathly earth tones -- a hazy Neil Young singing ghostly Ed Askew sketches. Bummer chord progressions, heavy organ drones and voices penetrating the fog. B&W stickers on an arigato pak with a black CDR and insert. The opening festivities for tonight include a DJ set by DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms and a set of awesome TPHB covers by none other than Heavy Petty - who are kickass. That all starts about 8 PM at the Caledonia, HP on stage around 9 PM.
Or, right about the same time, Birds & Wire will be over at Flicker.
Later in the night, there's the killer triple lineup of Liz Durrett, Ham 1, and F'pole coverboy Vic Chesnutt at the 40 Watt. Or, at the Go Bar, the now-rarely-playing Summer Hymns will be playing.
(Also, I'm not sure what line up Vic's playing with, but let me just make this appeal: if Vic's playing a song solo, please shut up during that song. He's not loud by nature and it's hard to hear over you and your friend catching up - even if you're over by the merch booth. Thank you.)

It's a night for varied tastes (like most nights in this town, I s'pose) with Nic Goodson (of Sleepy Horses) solo at the Mercury Lounge, country lineage holder Shooter Jennings at the Georgie Theatre, and Elite That Showstoppa at the 40 Watt.
Barrie Buck Interview - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:03 AM | Permanent Link
Back in August Kenny Aguar did an interview with Barrie Buck to kind of celebrate the 20th anniversary of her and Jared Bailey opening the 40 Watt back up in what is now the Caledonia (first show - Pylon reunion... whole place was white supposedly, not the crowd, I mean there were white sheets and stuff covering the walls).
Anyway, it took me a while to notice this interview, but it's a really great one and speaks to how awesome Barrie is. Go read it.

For football fans, that is the Friday before the Auburn game, so it should be an excellent way to kick off the weekend.
Please send me an email if you are willing to make a pot, or two, of chili and I will add you to the roster. Include the type of chili (meat/veggie) and the heat level (mild/hot) so we can make sure we have a variety of entries.
Remember, this year the proceeds will benefit Ronald McDonald House charities, so please participate in any way possible.

Students from your very own UGA College of Pharmacy will be on the radio tomorrow at 4:30pm on the UGA radio station WUOG 90.5 FM. Many thanks to Navid Amlani and members of Phi Delta Chi for organizing the health-related radio talk show entitled "Radio RX". We will have Kyle Dietz from the University of Georgia Health Center as our special guest as we dicuss general sexual health topics. The show will last about 30 minutes and we plan on having a show every other week. We would appreciate everyone listening and giving us feedback!
Obviously, thanks to Vet Pharmacist for the forward. Now, y'all start thinking of your weird questions to ask (hint: they're funnier if they're true).

In case you're wondering, there's a charity run and these folks are from the pharmacy school. Hence the name. Thanks to Vet Pharmacist for the forward.
Anyway, in case you missed it too, apparently back in '94 the U.S. Air Force launched a brief but hilariously awesome inquiry into the possibility of using a bomb that would make the enemy so attracted to each other that they would instantly become gay and couldn't fight because they were too busy getting busy with each other. There's also... 'Powers at the Caledonia, Sweet-Tooth Simpleton & The Simpletones at Flicker, and Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band at Little Kings
SAT:The Folk-Yous, Tin Cup Prophette, and Jeremy Wheatley are all at Flicker. For those who don't know, Jeremy drums for the Low Lows and has been in a buncha bands throughout the years here... chills with the JSF crew... helluva nice guy.

Pride Parade returns to the stage at the Caledonia tonight after spending much time in the studio working on their debut LP, which is in the "finishing touches" stages of recording at this point. They are loud and awesome and totally rule (not on that sloppy local metal band way but in a "man, for a bunch of eff-ups, these guys really have it together" way). Very worth while. They're opening for A. Armada I believe.
There's also a variety of other stuff around town. Just in case you didn't get enough last night, Sleepy Horses frontman Nic Goodson will be performing at Tasty World. Lake City's also on that bill. That's not your only Americana-ish choice for the night either, as Timber's over at Little Kings. Or, you can catch DJ Mahogany spinning at Flicker.
Finally, if hip-hop's your thing, there's three good choices. Ishues returns to town to perform at Farm 255, Son 1 is over at Nuci's Space, and the dirty south's own Lil' Scrappy's at the Georgia Theatre.

I'll be honest with you... I've never heard Okkervil River. And I'm not gonna start now. But people with good taste sometimes tend to like 'em, so I thought I should mention 'em in the listings today. Plus, after yesterday's "What do you mean you've never heard of the Lucksmiths?!?" debacle, I figure it's better safe than sorry. Plus, it takes up space. They're at the 40 Watt. If they're awful, pretend I never wrote this.
Meanwhile, some shows from local folks: Sleepy Horses at the Caledonia and some acoustic appearances by Noel Blackmon and Heather Heyn amongst others at the Melting Point.

Howdy Dayjobbers,
Jeff Owens here. A few months back Todd Kelly, Pete McBrayer, and I started a magazine project called Strayhorn. We ... are currently wrapping up our first issue, filled with the weird, the forgotten, and the overlooked in art, film music, etc. We are hosting some film events ... on the weekend of Oct. 5,6, & 7, we are bringing Raiders of Lost Ark: The Adaptation to Cine. Its a shot for shot remake of Raiders (full feature length) shot on Betamax in the 80's by 12-year- olds in Biloxi Miss. It has real fire, stunts, 200 costumes, snakes, explosions, and a giant paper mache boulder! Its awesome, and the guy who made it are coming to talk and answer questions and meet Athens. The event is benefiting Teen Screen, a local organization supporting teen filmmakers.
So, that all sounds pretty cool and there's some good folks behind it. Check out their page for more info.

Not sure if anyone wants credit for this, but thanks to C for forwarding me S's forward of D's story (anyone of those people who wants their name filled or this taken down can e-mail us): "We were having drinks with Clay and the guys from Bright Eyes after they did the Leno show, across the street from NBC studios ... and low and behold there sits Britney... There weren't very many people even in the place at that time of day so NO one was bothering her. As she went to leave there was a nervous hush in the bar area and as she walked by Clay yells, 'Tell those paparazzi to Kiss Your Ass.' Class act, I know. She stopped and smiled, and then a girl asked if she could snap a picture with her and she agreed. In one split second, Clay went from being "too cool" to acknowledge her to fighting to get in the picture. He should DEFINITELY lose some street cred in Athens over this."
