Mexican Christmastime From Us To You - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 2:36 PM | Permanent Link
Every year we put up Robo-Dave's song "Mexican Christmastime." This year, as a special treat (if you want to call it that), we have a live version of Nutria performing the song at the Caledonia.
Happy holidays, y'all.

This Holiday In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:43 AM | Permanent Link
Hey y'all, I'm taking some much-needed R&R for the next few weeks. I know a coupla' other TDJ'ers will be around working some, so I doubt the site will be completely inactive till then, but wanted to do a comprehensive listing before I left. Looking forward to 2008, f'reals...
WED:Jay Gonzalez plays what I'm assuming is his last gig at Kingpin's this year. Playing the hits for you. Requests taken. Hey, if I'm still around, I'll likely end up there. THURS:Sleepy Horses perform at the Caledonia. Meanwhile, Kenosha Kid is performing at the Melting Point with John Neff sitting in. FRI: Local rock stalwarts Honey and Lona perform at the 40 Watt. Hope For Agoldensummer celebrate their new album with a show at Flicker. Madeline's also on the bill. In addition, a couple of infrequently-performing Jolly Beggars' side projects, A. Che Why and The Noogeez, perform at Go Bar.
Also, in an interesting line-up, Love Tractor, John Keane, and a whole bunch of others play at the Georgia Theatre. Even former UGA kicker Billy Bennett (who engineered the first Whigs album, I believe).
SAT: For those still hanging around, Timber will perform at Tasty World and Bitch Switch will host a holiday party at Little Kings. TUES (MERRY CHRISTMAS!)
WED (12/26):Jay Gonzalez is listed as playing Kingpin's again, but I'm betting it's a misprint... after all, it is the day after Christmas. Jay? SAT (12/29):Garbage Island, Mother Jackson, Diet Rockstar, and Elite The Showstoppa (is there such thing as experimental rap?) all perform at the 40 Watt. SUN (12/30): Former Athenians The Diamond Center perform at Transmet. MON (12/31): As usual, the 40 Watt hosts its New Year's Eve party with the Krush Girls DJ'ing. There's also some shake-ass going on at Mercury Lounge with DJ Mahogany and DJ Baby Pandas.
Just wanna listen? Yeah, me too (I'm old, after all). Well, the completely awesome cover band Heavy Petty'll be at the Caledonia that night as well. Good getting drunk music. With them will be the Diamond Center in their second return-to-Athens performance.
Finally, haven't heard what's going on at the Squirrel that night, so watch Mercer's page for more info, I'm sure.
TUES (HAPPY NEW YEAR!): Go Dawgs! FRI (1/4):Pride Parade returns to the Caledonia to perform material from their newly-finished forthcoming LP. Trust me, it kicks ass. The Dumps and several other loud acts are on the bill. Not sure the order they're all playing in.
There's also Bloodkin at the 40 Watt, Gemini Cricket at Flicker, and Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band at Tasty World.
SAT (1/5): Hip-hop fans'll appreciate the lineup at the Caledonia with Bear, Son 1, and DJ Killacut amongst others.
Let me know what I've left out in the comments. I may ammend/update/repost as this post disappears over the next couple of weeks.
Hope y'all have a great Christmas and New Years and whatnot. See y'all back in 2008.
Monday Morning Sound-Off - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:42 AM | Permanent Link
It's the last working week of the year for many folks. Sure, tell us what you did this past week, but if you got favs from the last year (especially favorite activities you've done around town), please let us all know.
This Weekend In Athens - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 2:16 PM | Permanent Link
Taking over for Mail Clerk on this one today, so hopefully I get it all. No links today folks.
Friday:
Free show at the 40 Watt tonight with lots of bands, including Long Legged Woman.
Just down the street at Farm 255 is Ginger Envelope, Madeline and possibly a few other folks.
As mentioned below, Flicker is hosting William Tonks' first solo cd release party. William will do some songs on his own, then some with Danny Hutchens and Eric Carter of Bloodkin, then they will all do some separately as well, I believe. Oh, and they will have cheez-its. If you went to the Barbara Cue cd release party a few years back over at the Tasty World, you know Tonks is good for his word on the cheez-its.
The Go Bar is hosting a show with Fairmount Fair, Jay Domingo, Jeff Fallis, and some others as well as DJ Baby Pandas and a few other djs to follow. There's Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie) over at the Georgia Theatre, and there's a few bands over at Little Kings tonight, though I don't know anything about them.
Saturday:
The 40 Watt is hosting yet another free show, this one with Dark Meat and Noot d'Noot.
A. Armada, Caledonia Social Club and Stay Fucked are over at the Caledonia Lounge. I think this is one of the first few performances by Caledonia Social Club, and I must say that I caught the last one and enjoyed it, so check it out.
Flicker has Bain Mattox and finally, Rubber Soul Yoga Revolution Studio is going to be the venue for the cd release party for Hope For Agoldensummer.
Sunday:
Go get your end of the weekend rock on with Pride Parade over at Transmet!
Have a good weekend folks, and good luck braving the holiday traffic around town.
Finally! - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 11:50 AM | Permanent Link
I'm sure Mail Clerk will follow with his "This Weekend in Athens" post, but I did want to point out the podcast and interview in the online edition of ABH today with William Tonks, who celebrates the release of his first cd tonight at Flicker (with Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter of Bloodkin playing afterwards.) After 22 years in Athens, and wonderful playing in many, many bands, we offer our sincerest congrats to William on his first release.

Your Reward For Slacking From AMdN / Wares For Sale - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:44 AM | Permanent Link
For those who don't read the comments, yesterday after I asked about people who had things to sell, Jeff from AMdN posted this little bit of info:
We sell lotsa local music stuff over at athensmusic.net. 10% off when you use the code TDJ on checkout as a loyal reader of The Day Jobs.
Oh, and you can pick up items in our office in the Fred Building on College Ave. & pay no shipping.
Seriously? It's like you're getting rewarded for slacking at work. Big ups to AMdN.
Also, our pal Jeff Owens, in apparent direct competition to Your Bird Brain, also has shirts for sale though they're less child friendly and more robot-obsessed.
And Gordon is selling Christmas kisses for $10 a pop.
Tonight In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:35 AM | Permanent Link
Another of those great free Thursday night shows at the 40 Watt tonight, this time featuring Gemini Cricket, Folklore, and Cars Can Be Blue amongst others.
Meanwhile, next door at the Caledonia Lounge, there's a coupla' awesome cover bands. Well, one which I know is awesome and another which sounds awesome. The former being ZZ Topless - Athens' premier ZZ Top cover band - and the latter is a Black Sabbath cover band called Supernaut. Seriously, if missed the ZZ Top action at Halloween, y'oughta check 'em out. Fun stuff.
Finally, Tasty World has a great lineup as well featuring Todd McBride & The Cooler Heads, Rob Veal, and The Help. I like all three of those acts.

Christmas Play In Athens - posted by Mail Clerk @ 9:47 AM | Permanent Link
I really suck at checking our inbox. And every time I miss something, I swear I'm gonna get better at checking it... and I never do (sorry Strayhorn folks!). But I'm not entirely too late to mention this Christmas play being put on by reputable folks and with good material to back 'em...
Rose of Athens Theatre presents Holiday Memories December 6,7,8,13,14,15 at 7:30pm and December 9 & 16 at 5:30pm.
“It’s Fruitcake Weather!” Two of Truman Capote’s sweetest and most heartwarming stories of the holidays brought to life by Rose of Athens Theatre favorites and Bart King, popular Athens based singer-songwriter providing his live compositions on piano, throughout.
A rollicking, fun and tastefully sentimental play about an uncommon friendship, Holiday Memories is by Truman Capote and stage version by Russell Vandenbroucke. This play with music encompasses two short stories: A Thanksgiving Visitor and A Christmas Memory. It is wonderfully Southern and a perfect way to enjoy, embrace and celebrate the holidays with family and friends. Heartwarming holiday music provided by Bart King on piano underscores and adds beautiful color to this already delightful play.
Rose of Athens Theatre favorites, Lisa Mende (multiple roles), Ben Reed (Buddy), Allen Rowell (Truman) and Lisa Cesnik Ferguson (Sook) will perform in Holiday Memories and Rose of Athens Theatre core member Joelle Re Arp Dunham will direct this holiday treat. Newcoming performers for Holiday Memories are Dusty Drake (multiple roles), Kathleen Hogan (multiple roles) and Bart King (musician).
Dusty Drake has worked professionally in theatre since 2003, and in 2005 had a short play produced Off-Off-Broadway in New York City in 2005. Kathleen Hogan happily relocated to Athens, Georgia in the spring of 2007 after living and working as an actress in New York City for the last fifteen years – she is an exciting addition to Athens’ flourishing non-profit 501(c)(3) professional theatre.
One of the stated goals of Rose of Athens Theatre is to integrate Georgia music and musicians into all productions. Live music is featured in all Rose of Athens Theatre productions and it is one of the elements that define the style of Athens’ professional theatre. Holiday Memories is no exception. Musician Bart King is a perfect fit for Holiday Memories and Rose of Athens Theatre is thrilled to have him aboard for the holidays.
Donations of children’s books are welcomed at each performance and will be donated to Athens’ Sparrow’s Nest Annual Christmas Toy Drive and the national organization “Toys for Tots”. This play is recommended for 5th grade and older, but all ages are welcome.
Tickets: $15. Special rate of $10 for students and those under the age of 25. Donations of children’s books to benefit Toys for Tots and Sparrow’s Nest Christmas Toy Drive are welcome!
Where: Quinn Hall at Memorial Park 293 Gran Ellen Drive Athens, Georgia 30606 When: December 6,7,8,13,14,15 at 7:30pm and December 9 & 16 at 5:30pm Contact: 706-340-9181 box office www.roseofathens.org For more information on this event or Rose of Athens Theatre, call 706-340-9181, Email, or visit our Web Site.

Your Favorite Albums of 2007? - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 10:18 AM | Permanent Link
So I was reading over Aquarium Drunkard's favorite releases of 2007 (there's an Athens band mentioned), and it made me wonder what all of your favorite releases this year were. What about shows? Seems like a good Friday conversation.
Also, while I'm here, I have to say a big happy birthday to one of my great friends, Kelly DeFilippis, as well as a big congratulations to Pam and CP who are tying the knot tomorrow. I hope y'all have "the best weekend ever."

Athens Gets Yet Another Music Nod - posted by Desktop Publisher @ 4:06 PM | Permanent Link
Congratulations to Bettye LaVette, David Barbe, and the Drive-By Truckers for the grammy nomination of Bettye Lavette's 2007 release Scene of the Crime. (DBT was the backing band.) This is a nomination in the category of "Best Contemporary Blues" albums. I didn't have a chance to see the whole list so please mention if there are any other nominated Athens-related folks in the comments. You can preview the Truckers' next album, Brighter than Creations Dark, here. The album is due out in January.

Local punk mainstays Guff will be performing at the 40 Watt in support of their newest release Symphony Of Voices.
Flagpole's description of DJ Mahogany at Flicker tonight is better than I can do: "DJ Mahogany screens two schlockfest movies (Murphy's Law at 9 p.m. and Kingdom of the Spiders at 10:45 p.m.) and then screens dance party videos (from "Soul Train," "American Bandstand," etc.) for either your dancing or watching pleasure. Free wings, too!"

An awesome triple-bill tonight at the Georgia Theatre featuring some of the best Atlanta has to offer: The Black Lips, Deerhunter, and Dead Confederate - the latter act not actually being from Atlanta. Should be a helluva show.
Also, for something more low key (or as a warm-up show), you can check out our friend and yours Jay Gonzalez playing the hits on the keyano at the Spare Room Lounge in Kingpin's.
"In a program called Transmissions, MySpace is inviting musicians to choose a studio and select the songs they want to perform. MySpace will show and sell videos of the performance."

I don't see it in F'pole, but according to Mercer, Madeline's playing at Flicker tonight around 10 PM. More into at the source - including a flick beforehand.

The reunited Dinosaur Jr. sweeps through Athens. Of course, given J.'s recent connections to this town, you'd expect this to be a big welcoming for them at the 40 Watt tonight. Plus, they've got Barbecue Pants opening up - a band that includes Dave Schools, Rick Gordon, Kevin Sweeney, and Nick Bielli. You like post-punk? You got it. (Don't yell at me, music category nerds!)
Before the show, you can see the Lickity Splits down at the Caledonia around 8PM.

Well, the BCS still sucks. What else did y'all do this weekend? Cause those of us stuck working on last-minute school projects want to know what to do in 2 weeks...
