Tonight In Athens

A coupla' folks who are usually side-players in several bands step into the limelight to perform some of their own stuff tonight. Peter Erchick (Circulatory System), and Heather Heyn (Dark Meat - former?) perform at Flicker at around 8:30.

Arcs Show Up

For all y'all raving about the Arcs show and for any who missed it, Sloan's posted it up on Southern Shelter. Also, Mike's pics of the show are here at Deadly Designs.

They play again on the Friday of AthFest at the Caledonia. Let's hope there's at least one more show in between that one and this one.

Oh, and nice guitar face, Ben!

Tonight In Athens

A big mixed bag around town tonight. All spaced out and all different styles. As with every Wednesday, Jay Gonzalez will be at Kingpin's playing the "piano" and singing requests.

You can also catch Sweet-Tooth Simpleton & The Simpletones at the Caledonia, Christopher's Liver at Farm 255, Sleepy Horses at Flicker, and Diet Rockstar amongst a sea of experimental and loud acts at the 40 Watt.

Video Jukebox

Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere:

Talking Heads - The Great Curve (Live, 1980)

(The PAL to NTSC thing effect the timing a bit, & the performance isn't nearly as good as the one on "The Name Of This Band...", but you get the idea.)

Nick Lowe - Raging Eyes (Live on Letterman):

(I can't get this song outta my head lately.)

Warren Zevon - Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner (Live on Letterman):

(You kinda have to forgive the limited vocal range on account of the slight case of mesothelioma at the time.)

Randy Newman - Short People (Live, 1978):

New Randy album due this year (finally!).

Why do I listen to such old, weird music? Anyway, for those who missed it, here's The Whigs on Letterman. The only one that's up is one of those where someone videotaped their TV, but it's pretty good quality considering that (if you see a better one pop up today, please post the link in the comments):

Tonight In Athens

Y'all all already know Ween's in town at the Georgia Theatre. Especially Robo cause he talked about 'em for forever. If you got tickets - great! If you still need tickets or really just want a good idea of where to get your pre-drink on, Mr. Jeff Griggs has a good idea for you if you go to the Caledonia:
Happy Hour Pre-Ween Extravaganza starting at 6 pm featuring beer and a lot of Ween on the PA. The cool thing is that we're raffling off two tickets to the show to benefit Nuci's Space. Raffle tickets will be $2 a piece and there will be two winners (one Ween ticket each).
So, there's an idea. Later that night at the same venue, y'all not going to Ween can catch Christopher's Liver and Gemini Cricket.

Finally, the good folks over at Strayhorn Magazine are putting on another rare and interesting film that you can't just go out and rent at most places:
Hey Dayjobbers! Strayhorn is screen a cool punk era British film, RADIO ON (click for trailer), with a killer soundtrack. Its a stark, understated black and white rarity. Free at Flicker ... at 9PM.
In addition, Juxtapoz Magazine just posted one of (Strayhorn's) Jeff T. Owens' works. Check it out.

This Weekend In Athens

You're nobody till somebody loves you...

FRI: Five-Eight, Hope For Agoldensummer, and Lake City all perform at the 40 Watt as part of the annual Mental Health Benefit. Certainly a worthwhile cause and given how crazy things've been lately, well-timed.

You can also catch Pegasuses-XL and relative newcomers The Buddy System (Ryan Lewis' new band) at the Go Bar.

For a more relaxed time in an atmosphere that serves food and/or brings the booze directly to you, there's Bob Hay & The Jolly Beggars at the Melting Point.

Finally, DJ Mahogany will be kicking out the jams at Little Kings.

SAT: You would think in a week filled with new DBT and Whigs albums that one of those would take the cake for exciting things happening in Athens. And while those are both solid releases by bands who have become increasingly exciting to see live and have managed to up their game on those albums, I'm most excited about seeing the full electric debut of The Arcs at the Caledonia. Let's just put it this way: Ceiling Fan + Possibilities + Wydelles = Awesome. If you like rock n' roll, you'll like it. I cannot wait. They open the show for David Barbe & The Quick Hooks who y'all all already know, I hope.

This is not to dissuade folks from seeing The Whigs and The Ginger Envelope at the 40 Watt next door. I mean, I'm sure that show'll be awesome (in re-reading that, it sounds like a sarcastic sentence - it's not). Plus, right up the street you can catch William Tonks at Flicker - and probably combine that show with either of the other two.

And if you didn't get enough dancin' the night before, DJ Mahogany'll be back out spinning at Farm 255 this time.

New Jucifer Album Details

Many years ago, during an interview, Amber and Ed told me they really wanted to do an album about the French Revolution and were writing all these songs about it. Well, it's finally come about - and is, in fact, a double-album. It's called L'autrichienne and comes out March 18th on Relapse Records (where you can pre-order it now and get a free t-shirt). Here's the tracklist (not sure if you care, but here it is):

1. Blackpowder
2. Thermidor
3. To Earth
4. Deficit
5. Champ De Mars
6. Fall Of The Bastille
7. To The End
8. Armada
9. L'autrichienne
10. Behind Every Great Man
11. October
12. Birds Of A Feather
13. Traitors
14. The Law Of Suspects
15. Noyade
16. The Mountain
17. Window (Where The Sea Falls Forever)
18. Fleur De Lis
19. Procession A La Guillotine
20. Coma
21. The Assembly

Let's hope "Coma" is not a cover of the Guns N' Roses epic of the same name because that song was horrible. The band's in Athens on February 6th and will likely be playing a lot this new stuff, so you should go see that.

Tonight In Athens

Down With The Woo and the Ice Cream Socialists perform (with a few other acts) at the 40 Watt tonight. For those who don't know (cause they don't play out a lot), the former consists of members (the only full-time members) of the now-defunct Heros Severum. New band is more electronic, I think. Show's a benefit for ATHICA.

And let the countdown begin: 4 days until Yacht Rock 11 is online.

Tonight In Athens

It's Wednesday! So that means, of course, none other than Jay Gonzalez in his weekly outings at Kingpins playing the hits. Now featuring a bar within a few feet of the seating. Not bad. If he stops by, maybe he'll announce a theme or something for this week.

A couple of other interesting things. Page Campbell (Hope For Agoldensummer) performs solo material at the Caledonia, and a new act called Sleeping Friends, which features members of Telenovela & The Lickity Splits plays at the 40 Watt.

Tonight In Athens

Comedy Genius Pete McBrayer hosts Flicker's open mic "Stand Up Explosion". Not sure how much comedy the host gets to/will perform, but seeing as he's really put the breaks on comedy appearances lately, any Pete McBrayer is better than none at all.

Tonight In Athens

Tin Cup Prophette, who I can't remember as having played here in a while, returns to the stage at the 40 Watt. If you haven't heard her, the music's "atmospheric" music if that means anything. Also, she's opening the show, so it won't be a late night if that's what you're going out for.

This Weekend In Athens

Could use a snow day...

FRI: One of the most well-known and well-respected jazz groups in the world, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be performing at the Melting Point. This performance may actually be better than seeing them in their native town of New Orleans because unlike Preservation Hall, the Melting Point: a) Is Climate Controlled b) Has seats c) Seats more than 100 d) Has a sound system. But then again, there's no accounting for "authenticity". Anyway, the cost is steep, but the performance is practically guaranteed to be great.

Another outta-town act on almost the opposite side of the musical spectrum is Atlanta band Attractive Eighties Women performing at the Caledonia in honor of their release of their first LP. The band features several folks involved prominently in several Cartoon Network series such as Sea Lab. Anyone remember former Red & Black cartoonist Mack Williams? He sings. Always a fun show... more of a comedy thing really, but good comedy and decent musicianship.

Other good options for the night include Guff at the 40 Watt or The H.E.A.P. Project at Farm 255.

SAT: The Secret Squirrel takes its showcase shows to an even larger venue Fat Man Touring presents a showcase of sorts as The Georgia Theatre hosts Dark Meat, Madeline, Venice Is Sinking, Folklore, and Quiet Hooves. The latter two are celebrating new releases at this show as well. I hope the former three have new releases this year.

Other good choices include Hank Vegas at the Caledonia Lounge, The Lolligags and later the Krush Girls at Go Bar, and Cowboy Mouth at the Melting Point, making this a NOLA weekend for that club. Seems weird these New Orleans bands touring during Carnival season, but whatever.

Tonight In Athens

Jay Gonzalez has a solo gig up at Flicker tonight. Not sure what he'll be playing. He's done solo performances of his own stuff, solo performances under a different name doing instrumental music and of course his covers over at Kingpin's. I hope it's the first one I named cause his songs are great. Well worth your time if you like pop music.

Speaking of Jay, the Flagpole listing seems to imply that Nutria is no more, but I don't see that anywhere on their myspace. Anyone? In any case, you can now hear new songs from their upcoming LP A Permanent Reminder Of A Temporary Thought on their myspace page.

Tonight In Athens

Kind of a lot going on tonight. First, over at the 40 Watt, Summer Hymns is playing. Sleepy Horses too. And several other bands.

Or, you can see our pal Jay Gonzalez over at Kingpin's playing the cover songs and having a good time around 8 PM.

Plus there's Meghann Jordan at Flicker and/or Timber at Farm 255.

New, Free WVTS Covers Album

The fun-loving scamps in We Versus The Shark have come up with a cool project for 2008. No, it's not called "finish the damn new LP" (though they say that'll happen this Spring). It's a free covers album called MURMURMUR, released through Quote Unquote Records.

They're going to be releasing one song on the first of every month this year. The first is a cover of the song "Right Away" by Pattern Is Movement. Get it here. And then go back there at the first of every month. I sure as hell won't remember to remind y'all, but maybe Jeff'll drop by and tell us when they're up. I hope.

Oh, and while the album is free technically, a donation to the record company while you're there maybe helpful. I'm sure they don't have Radiohead money sitting around.

Tonight In Athens

A coupla' relatively big outta-towner things happening tonight. First, I'm sure y'all know that Yo La Tengo's gonna be doing some sort of acoustic jammy thing over at The Melting Point along with Kurt Wagner (of Lambchop "fame"). And since Yo La Tengo fans already know that, I can't contribute much else here.

Also, comedian Doug "Marijuanalogues" Benson's gonna be performing at the Loft as part of some big anniversary celebration there. Some might know him from the awesome movie reviews he does over at BobandDavid.com, while more probably know him from Best Week Ever. Anyway, pretty funny guy. Worth your time out, for sure.

Joy Division Film + Ticket Giveaway

Semi-famous music video director Anton Corbijn has directed a documentary biopic on Joy Division called Control. It's coming to Cine and here's the info:
Anton Corbijn's feature length film Control will open at local Athens art house theater Cine this Friday (January 11) and run until next Thursday (January 17). The event is a trilateral collaboration between Buddies Helping Buddies (Gordon Lamb & Mike Turner), Cine and Wuxtry Records.
But here's the best part:
Buddies Helping Buddies has a pair of passes available for The Day Jobs to give away for any screening on Monday, January 14. Showtimes are 4:15, 7:15 and 9:45 PM.
To win those tickets, you have to be the first to e-mail Buddies Helping Buddies (by 2 PM on Sunday at the latest) with the subject line reading "Day Jobs/Joy Division" and the answer to the following question:
In 1976 the members of Joy Division and several other to-be-formed groups witnessed a galvanizing performance by The Sex Pistols in Manchester, England. Where was this gig held?
First correct answer submitted wins those tickets. Then you just have to pick a time.

Why do I feel like a bad radio DJ now? Anyway, good luck!

This Weekend In Athens

No more decent college football till August...

FRI: The Drive-By Truckers continue their stand at the 40 Watt tonight. A band named Glossary from Murfreesboro, TN is opening, but I've never heard 'em. Anyway, you know if you're going cause it's sold out.

So if you don't have tix or it's not your thing, check out the Caledonia where Jeremy Wheatley, Magic Missile, The Folk Yous, and Cut Buffer are performing. Most of y'all are familiar with those people, but the last act is supposedly Magic Missle's Jake Mosely performing yacht rock covers. And where there's Mosely & yacht rock you usually get either Griggs or Gonzalez... possibly both. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, We Versus The Shark perform songs from their great new EP over at the Georgia Theatre. With them is the Buddy System - a new act featuring Ryan Lewis - and what's listed as Contraband though I think I saw a flyer showing they were gonna be playing Megaman 2. So, we'll see.

For some ass-shakin' fun, DJ Mahogany will be at Little Kings spinning exclusively songs from motion picture soundtracks.

SAT: One more night of the Truckers at the Watt. Tonight, the Patterson Hood-produced Dexateens will be the opening act. Not sure if this night's sold out yet or not, but not that I've heard. Last chance to see 'em before they hit the road for a long while. They don't really believe in down time.

You can also catch Night Moves at the Caledonia, Music Hates You at Tasty World, and/or Christopher's Liver at Flicker.

Tonight In Athens

The Drive-By Truckers triumphantly debut Brighter Than Creation's Dark here in Athens - in its entirety live at the 40 Watt tonight. The album comes out in about 2 weeks, but supposedly there'll be advanced copies at the show. Opening for them are both Goat and the Wydelles (with their respective frontmen). Don't forget about the Nuci's Space benefit auction and pre-party beforehand over at Cine (click the link above for more details). And though they won't be playing the album all the way through again, if you miss 'em tonight, they'll be here all weekend, folks.

Also, you can catch Summer Hymns at Flicker and/or our drunk punk friends in Thunderchief over at Tasty World.

R.E.M.'s New Album & The Mangum Lobster

For those of you who are too old to be reading Pitchfork (all of you - me included), R.E.M's new album is called Accelerate and it'll be out April 1st. If not for the little ticker at the bottom of our page, I wouldn't have known this yet. There's a website putting up a new art-school home movie each day till it comes out. If you like quickly-cut grainy video without a storyline, you're in for a treat.

They'll also be at SXSW too. Maybe Computer Support'll drop by and tell us all about it. Does he even read this site anymore?

Anyway, everyone in the media's taken this an opportunity to take one more swipe at Around The Sun (including Stipe). As one of the few who liked that album apparently (it's a well-done Sunday morning album, in my opinion), I really can't understand the immense dislike. But oh well. In any case, the new one's gonna be faster... obviously.

Oh, and while I was walking the halls of hip there, I dug up this month-old story on the E6 movie that should appeal to all the Mangum-spotters out there. What will he do next?!?

Casper & The Cookies bring infectious pop to the Caledonia Lounge. Also on the bill are the Popfest mainstays Poison Control Center.

Meanwhile (or really, previous to that show), our pal Jay Gonzalez plays the hits on the piano at Kingpin's. Can I just say that it's a travesty that the last Possibilities record was never released? Cause it is.

New Redneck GReece

Courtesy of the Thrillhammers, the band with whom he recorded his new track, you can now hear Redneck GReece's nuanced take on the immigration issue entitled "Come On In Juan". Even has a Spanish verse. Pretty great stuff.

Search Thursday Morning for Missing Athens Woman

Cayle Bywater, an Athens resident and Nuçi's Space volunteer, has been missing since Saturday. A group of volunteers are meeting on Thursday morning off of Milledge Avenue to search for her.

INTERESTED PARTIES - MEET AT:

Tonight In Athens

Sweet-Tooth Simpleton and the Simple Tones will be performing at Go Bar tonight around 9 PM. They play an off-kilter form of bluegrassish/folky kinda stuff with a very good sense of humor. Their newest album title, "Santana's Greatest Hits" is among my favorite in a while.

Welcome to 2008

Happy new year, day jobbers.

Hopefully you all had great holidays. Feel free to drop us a line in the comments to let us know how your holiday went. We'd love to hear reviews of New Year's shows and the like, as well as any recommendations of cool things you saw or read the past few weeks.

Here's a cut and paste of the shows that Mail Clerk had going on in town for the rest of the week. Let us know if any shows have been added at the last minute. As for those of you who are back at work like me, may the force be with you.
(Updated)

WED (1/2): American Cheeseburger at Flicker.

FRI (1/4): Pride Parade returns to the Caledonia to perform material from their newly-finished forthcoming LP. Trust me, it kicks ass. The Dumps and several other loud acts are on the bill. Not sure the order they're all playing in. (Update: No Dumps now; order is Subrig Destroyer as first band, Colossus as second, and the final band is Pride Parade, who I must add, have been kicking some major ass lately.)

There's also Bloodkin at the 40 Watt, Gemini Cricket at Flicker, and Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band at Tasty World.

SAT (1/5): Hip-hop fans'll appreciate the lineup at the Caledonia with Bear, Son 1, and DJ Killacut amongst others.

Also on Saturday is "Beautiful Losers: The Music of Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits." More info here.
