Jimmy Kimmel Has Street Credit

Sarah Silverman's video regarding her imaginary affairs with Matt Damon (and also starring Matt Damon) has become an Internet phenomenon lately. If you haven't seen it, don't worry, there's enough of a clip in the video below to get the idea.

Sarah's boyfriend of many years, Jimmy Kimmel, was obviously a bit put out. His revenge ups the ante bigtime (VERY NSFW):

This Weekend In Athens

Happy Leap Year...

FRI: This weekend's theme seems to be bands I know playing with a few other bands I don't know. So I'll just name the ones I know... For instance among the lineups tonight are Sleepy Horses and the Caledonia and New Sound Of Numbers and Everybody Everybody (featuring folks from Cars Can Be Blue and Christopher's Liver - and apparently both big Homestar fans) at Flicker.

However, there's also Venice Is Sinking who I applaud for taking the bold stance of playing all by their selves at Farm 255. Who needs opening acts that confuse, confound, and anger local bloggers? Not them.

SAT: Every once in a while, Jonathan Richman makes his (yearly?) trip to the 40 Watt and this particular show can be seen their along with Vic Chesnutt (separately, I think). As Gordon pointed out this week, the show at Flicker which could be a great double-bill sorta compliment actually starts at the same time - 8 PM - and features King of Prussia amongst others. Look for the GLamb sweating profusely as he huffs it up and down Washington Street that night.

For those not going to those shows and simply preferring to stay put, other options are Dead Confederate at the Caledonia, Gemini Cricket at Go Bar, and Christopher's Liver at Little Kings.

During the day their are two benefit shows, one featuring Stereo Campbell (amongst others) at Tasty World as part of the annual BreastFest show. There's also Ice Cream Socialists at UGA's Legion Field raising awareness of something or saying you should take action about something. I dunno.

Funnies

A great misheard lyrics video...

...and an amusing interview with Keith Richards. The last line takes the cake.

Jack & Mariah

In case you don't read comments, Hillary hipped us to the fact that Jack McBrayer (who's related to several folks we like) is in a Mariah Carey vid somehow. Weird. Anyway, here it is:

10 Years Of Unhealthy Obsessions

Where in the world is Jeffrey Mangum? Anyone know? Well we're going on 10 years of his most famous album and still no sign, but Slate's managed to make that into an article somehow. Computer Support, who used to post here (remember?), sent me the link. Thanks, CS!

Tonight In Athens

There's a showcase at the 40 Watt tonight for BumbleBear Records. It features Titans of Filth, Folklore, Quiet Hooves, Christopher's Liver, My Unborn Children, Big Gray, Gemini Cricket, and The French Toasts. That's a lotta pop band for your dolla.

Meanwhile, right up the street at Flicker, Jeremy Wheatley will be performing some of his solo material.

Airplane Strife

Just when I thought I've heard it all, this comes along.
A pair of 18-year-olds claim they were escorted off a flight for being pretty.
My favorite quote is, "no one on the plane really looked like us...except us."

Tonight In Athens

There's a benefit show tonight at the 40 Watt for Sgt. Gale (the officer who was injured during that attack at the Alps Kroger a while back). I'm sure I don't have to tell y'all how expensive a hospital stay is - so this is a great cause. Also, it's a great lineup with Music Hates You, Jackpot City, and The Dictatortots amongst others.

But what if you're like, "Eff benefits, I hate those." Well, there's also a good option up the street as former DBT-er Jason Isbell returns to town as part of tonight's lineup at the Georgia Theatre.

When Politicians Try to Act Laid Back

I saw a piece on CNN about these videos yesterday, and of course, it encouraged me to start out my day by screwing around on youtube looking for them.

This happened a year ago, but I somehow missed it. It's vintage George Bush material already.

I'm thinking Barack could use a tad more rhythm.

Apparently, Ted Kennedy has made a habit of singing...in Spanish.

(And get this, there's even more of him doing that Spanish singing on the internets).

Here's Mike Huckabee dropping some bass bombs on the world.

And, alas, I couldn't find any footage of Hillary bustin' a move, so I had to resort to this fun game instead.

What's everyone's prediction for the election? Might as well go there now, I'm sure we'll go there eventually anyway. (Apparently, some folks think Christopher Walken should be President.)

Film Parodies

Two great film parodies ran on TV this past weekend, both of which will ruin major scenes from these movies if you haven't seen 'em, so only watch 'em if you have...

One for There Will Be Blood (from SNL - not sure how long it'll be up cause they're nazis about YouTube):

And one for No Country For Old Men (amongst others that aren't as memorable as parodies) from Conan:

This Weekend In Athens

Posting a good friend's picture is indulgent and fun (no, I don't know Rollins)...

FRI: A scattered night tonight around town. Hard to believe on a Friday with students in town and no football. That being said, punk/hardcore/hard rock fans can dig on Polemic and Thunderchief amongst others at Little Kings. Or, in a very varied benefit lineup at Tasty World (raising money for the local Red Cross), you can catch Ishues.

SAT: "Hammerin'" Henry Rollins strolls into town for a spoken word performance at the 40 Watt. I saw him years ago at the Tate Center. It was very entertaining for about the first 2 1/2 hours. Holy crap. Seriously, he has lots of stories and intense enthusiasm for every single one of them. That being said, the man's a good storyteller. I'm just sayin' you better be in for the long haul.

Speaking of the long haul, the Aux2 Experimental Arts Festival takes place at Cine, Flicker, and Little Kings. I think Heather McIntosh had a lot to do with starting this festival. Other than that, y'oughta checkout F'pole's write-up for more info.

There's also A. Armada and the Buddy System at the Caledonia.

SUN: A Taste of Athens at the Classic Center for the gluttons out there. And if that's not enough, the Classic City Rollergirls are hosting a pie-eating contest at Farm 255 at noon.

Pride Parade's New Album Is Done

According to their myspace page, Pride Parade's new album is 11 tracks long and is now fully mastered and in that crucial stage where all it needs is the right record company (right, musicians?). Anyway, I have no doubts that it'll be great.

You can hear some of it at the aforementioned page ("Mr Man"'s been a crowd pleaser for a while now). They open for Harvey Milk March 8th at the Caledonia and at the Watt on the 28th with the Black Lips, and I'm sure they'll play lotsa this stuff then too.

Also, their debut EP is almost sold out. Talk to them if you want one. Two of the four songs on it will be on the new record. Two won't.

Tonight In Athens

Fun for pop fans at the 40 Watt tonight with the Ice Cream Socialists and Telenovela. This is Telenovela's first appearance in 9 months according to Hassi. And according to NPR (did Lars have something to do with this?), they're one of 2007's Top 10 Great Unknown Artists.

Rob Veal & Friends perform at Flicker tonight. Rob is definitely a fantastic songwriter and what the F'pole says is true - he's very understated to the point that people often miss the great lyricism (he also tends to mumble through a few lyrics here and there, which doesn't help). So understated in fact that the only pic I could find is of him with the Dashboard Saviors from way back when (check out Todd's hair) - Rob's the one on the far right. Well, well worth your time to check out, though, if you're into singer-songwriters at all.

Also, although it's not listed, I think Jay Gonzalez'll be at Kingpins as well, seeing as though it's Wednesday. Don't quote me on that, though.

But if you really wanna put it in high gear, Rick Santorum will tell you how to fight Islamic Fascism at the Tate Center.

In case y'all missed it in the comments, Pylon will be webcasted live from the Mercury Lounge tonight at 8. For once, an early show, and you don't even have to leave your house. (You'll probably still get the hangover though.) Thanks for the heads up, Sloan.

Pete McBrayer hosts a monthly comedy showcase at Flicker tonight. It's really your only chance to get small doses of the "comedy genius" who's currently on a performance hiatus.

There's also the Dumps at Tasty World. I know you're not shocked by that. Neither am I. But they are debuting a "new lineup", so there's that.

This Weekend in Athens

Iron Hero
A quick rundown of tonight's music...

There's Iron Hero, Twin Tigers, and a band out of Nashville called Oblio over at the Caledonia, Hope for a Golden Summer at Farm 255, Telenovela at Flicker, though I don't know much about them (but heard it's good), jazz over at Mercury Lounge, and hip hop at Tasty World. Or, get your dj fix on over at the 40 Watt with the Krush Girls and Twin Powers.

And for Saturday...

Peter Alvanos and Dancer vs. Politician at the 283 Bar, Deerhunter's Bradford Cox does his thing with Atlas Sound over at the 40 Watt, Jackpot City and Lona at the Caledonia, Madeline and others at Flicker, and Elliot McPherson (of Alabama band The Dexateens) will be performing a solo set, along with his artwork displayed, at the new Rye Bar (the old DT's). Don Chambers will also be performing solo at this show. Elliot's shadowboxes are really cool pieces of art, by the way. Definitely worth a peek. I think it's free admission from 8 to 9 and cheap PBR's. Also, DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be doing a dj set over at Little Kings.

Update: I forgot about this show on Sunday. William Tonks and Clay Leverett (cd release for both Tonks and Lona) at Kingpins around 8 p.m. Sounds like good Sunday fun if you ask me!

The weather should be warming up for the next few days, but expect some rain on Sunday. So get out there while you can before it gets too cold again. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Tonight In Athens

Happy Valentine's Day, y'all. A buncha' stuff scattered about including The HEAP at Tasty World, Cars Can Be Blue at the Caledonia, Page Campbell & Jeremy Wheatley (performing separately as far as I know) at Flicker, Nic Goodson at Mercury Lounge, and of course the second night of the Dave Brubeck Quartet at UGA's Hodgson Hall for a taste of something classy.

Though I'm not a huge fan personally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the Dave Brubeck Quartet will be performing for the first of several shows tonight at UGA's Hodgson Hall tonight. That, and I don't have a lot else to post.

The Low Lows Are Now An Austin Band

Just a bit of quick news... apparently with very little warning (not even a "last show" of sorts) the Low Lows are now an Austin, TX band. Just a heads up. Apparently Parker's recruiting musicians there now as obviously some folks stuck 'round here. Presumably this has something to do with them being on Misra now? Anyway, another one bites the dust.

Flicker's the place to be tonight. There you can see Christopher's Liver playing another in a streak of recent shows as well as the rarely-performing The Jersey Barrier (formerly known as Welterweight), featuring former Kinkaid members. I'd imagine it all gets started around 8:30 PM-ish (Flicker time), so shouldn't be too late of a night either on a Monday.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: The Jammy Jamm shows (not to be confused with shows that involve the sweet Hamm Jamm - which are sadly few and far between these days) make their way to the weekend. That means the acts you see at The Secret Squirrel show up at the 40 Watt and you get to see 'em for free. Tonight's show is a packed lineup as usual and features Sweet Teeth, Cinemechanica (click picture to enlarge), The Buddy System, and more.

If that's not your thing, there's Dancer Vs. Politician (new-ish act by Sunni from Audition with Max Reinhardt) at Flicker and the power-balladeers in The Folk Yous at Go Bar.

SAT: Ham 1 (recently lauded by the notoriously picked KM), Andy From Denver (aka Andy that guy from M Coast), and outta-towners Miwa Gemini (who I've never heard but who Team Clermont really, really wanted me to mention and since they paid us attention as if we were a legitimate media outlet, I figured I would) all play at Flicker.

And the Jammy Jamm crew is back with "Athens Face/Off II" at the 40 Watt featuring Dark Meat members teaming up with people who aren't in Dark Meat to make instantaneous new music in front of your eyes/ears. The lineup is:
10:00-10:10 - Jeff Tobias vs Blake Tabb (Gemini Cricket) = Bombardopolis
10:10-10:20 - Emily Armond vs Gabe Vodicka (Long Legged Woman) = Native Tongues
10:20-10:30 - Kayla vs John Fernandes (Circulatory System) = Naranja
10:30-11:40 - Charlie Estes vs Jeremy Harbin (A Armada) = Expert Work
10:40-11:50 - Heather MacIntosh vs Chris Herren (Garbage Island) = Garbage System
10:50-11:00 - Nick Canada vs Donovan Babb (The Winter Sounds) = Whoa Canada
11:00-11:10 - Aaron Jollay vs Steve Miller (300 Cobras) = Booze Clooze
11:10-11:20 - Tim Schrieber vs Colby Carter (Mouser) = 500 Points
11:20-11:30 - Ben Clack vs Mark Dale (Pegasuses-XL) = Goldenrod
11:30-11:40 - Dylan vs Roy Coughlin (Some Animal) = Dylan and Garfunkel
11:40-11:50 - Forrest Leffer vs Patrick Ware (The Dumps) = Boatmeal
11:50-12:00 - Kris Deason vs Jay Roach (The Gimme 5) = Chicken Pasta Suicide
12:00-12:10 - Jim McHugh vs Curtis = Death Knobs
12:10-12:20 - Sara-J Ursry vs Patrick Carey (Ginger Envelope) = Ocean Raves
12:20-12:30 - Bryan Poole vs Matt Kurz (Matt Kurz One) = Drug Gods
12:30-12:40 - Claire Campbell vs Maryn (Divided Like a Saint's) = Dope Friends
12:40-12:50 - Al Daglis vs Andy Hollingsworth (The Dumps) = Monotaur
Could be interesting at least.

If that loud's not really your speed or you're just not feeling that tonight, then maybe you'd enjoy seeing Folklore and Summer Hymns over at Farm 255.

Tom Petty At The Superbowl

For anyone who, like me, didn't realize that half time would be as early as 8:00 and missed Petty's performance (Is the Superbowl always that early? Guess I'm still in college football bowl game "nothing good starts before 8" mentality...), here it is:

Part 1 (American Girl):

Part 2 (I Won't Back Down / Free Fallin' / Runnin' Down A Dream):

Not sure if the vocals were that high in the mix on live TV, but good performance overall. He's playin' Atlanta on July 9th. Can't wait.

This Weekend In Athens

Whew! January's done.

FRI: A few good shows scattered about tonight. You can catch We Versus The Shark at Tasty World for example. Hey, it's February 1st, right? So I think the next song from their cover album should be available here. Never thought I'd remember that. Good thing they're playing.

There's also The New Sound Of Numbers at Farm 255 as well as Sleepy Horses and DJ Mahogany among others at Go Bar.

SAT: Ted Hafer's friends and family have put together a rock show in his honor at the 40 Watt. Many combinations of musicians who haven't appeared together before and who may never again will play. Some of the folks involved include: Dave Barbe, Nick Bielli, Vic Chesnutt, Dave Gerow, Ham 1, Steve Hurley, Ballard Lesemann, Frank MacDonell, Dave Marr, Philip McArdle, Craig McQuiston, Sam Mixon, John Neff, Curtiss Pernice, Eric Sales, Creston Spiers, and Paul Trudeau. Starts at 8 PM.

Also, there's The 63 Crayons and The Buddy System at the Caledonia and the Folk Yous at Go Bar.

Two other "event" style happenings are taking place (that sounds like I just used a thesaurus 3 times) as well. There's the Effie's Club Follies Chili Cookoff at Little Kings featuring performances by the titular act as well as Sweet Tooth Simpleton & The Simpletones.

There's also a Faculty Talent Show at Hodgson Hall at 4 PM featuring performances by Workhorse of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry and dance troupe Sulukule amongst others.
