Blogger(s) Needed

Hey Everyone!,

Anyone out there ever wanted to run a music blog?!?

Sadly, my time in Athens in coming to a close somewhat soon. Already incredibly out of touch, I can't imagine what I'd be like as a blogger if I weren't even living here. Desktop Publisher will be around, and I hope she'll keep volunteering her services after I'm outta here, but we didn't want to shift the whole burden onto her. So, we're putting out a call for a new blogger or bloggers who want to contribute here.

The reality of these duties is that you'd have to pay domain name fees (CS could tell you the cost - somewhere like $10/month, maybe less?), be up on local music with somewhat of a wide-ranging yet discriminating taste, and commit to post something each weekday that you possibly can (basic HTML a plus but not needed - I didn't know any when I started this stuff).

For all that, you will receive little to no credit and certainly no notoriety, financial benefits, or journalistic stature of any sort, but sometimes you get media passes to AthFest cause they're nice to us. Feel free to buddy up with people to split those duties and costs like CS and I did way back when.

If you're game, e-mail us and let us know and tell us about yourself and what you dig. Do this only if if you won't get your feelings hurt if you're not chose. If there's no one to take over, this site may disappear after July and no one wants that. Well, some people don't want that.

This Weekend In Athens

FRI: Lotsa big shows around tonight. I'm gonna start with the free one: The Black Lips headline the 40 Watt with The Selmanaires (from the ATL) and Athens' own Pride Parade, who are awesome. It's free, it'll be packed so get there early.

I know some people here were excited about seeing Girl Talk at the Georgia Theatre as well. Pegasuses-XL opens for them and there's a pre-show party at the Rye Bar with some sort of surprise guest DJ.

Also, the Gourds are at the Melting Point and Atlanta's Young Joc is at UGA's Legion Field, but I'm pretty sure that show's sold out.

SAT: Elf Power has the official release show for their newest album, In A Cave, at the 40 Watt. All part of an extended tour they're on. Supporting them on this bill are Ham 1, Madeline, and several other acts.

There's also a cool outdoor show at Farm 255 with Little Country Giants and new residents of Washington Street Venice Is Sinking. (UPDATE: Lucas says VIS isn't playing this show... F'pole had listed it as such. Little Country Giants are playing though.)

Meanwhile, there's a hip-hop line up at the Caledonia with Elite Tha Showstoppa, Son 1 and other folks.

And on that same block at nearly the same time as all that you can see Producto and Don Chambers, amongst others, at Flicker.

SUN: Madeline performs for a second time this weekend at the Melting Point with William Tonks and Austin act The Greencards.

Tonight In Athens

Chrisopher's Liver performs again, and since he's been without his liver for a while, good to see the combo back. They're at the Caledonia.

Some people are doing the opposite - laying it all out there solo including Peter Erchick at Flicker and Jay Gonzalez at Kingpin's.

Finally, there's Kenosha Kid at the Melting Point.

More SXSW: Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk fans may enjoy listening to their March 14 set from Spiro's at SXSW.

Tonight In Athens

Back once again at Flicker is Venice Is Sinking. With them is Matias, who I've never heard of.

Also, Cars Can Be Blue are at the Caledonia. And DJ Kurt Wood is at the Rye Bar, but I have no idea where the Rye Bar is.

A Message from Michael Stipe

I just ran across this on the internets.

Athens Music News

In case you missed it, Dark Meat dropped a MySpace bulletin regarding new music posted on their myspace site, new tour dates, the re-release of Universal Indians ("on april 8th on digipack and april 22nd on gatefold double LP..itll be available everywhere and has a new remastering job by Glen Schick and some bonus tracks recorded in the middle of the desert and an albert ayler tune"), and a mention of a new LP to be released in October. So, they're busy. All 37 of them. And Jeff was drunk and named Charlie.

And, the new Jucifer is out too.

This Weekend In Athens

Where's the party at, sirs?

FRI: It's a full covers show tonight with both Heavy Petty & ZZ Topless at the Georgia Theatre. Both of these bands will make you question why you don't own more of their covered artists' music. And seriously, in addition to all his purported superpowers, Kevin Lane can also rock.

Also, there's another installment of the Jammy Jamm series at the 40 Watt - tonight with A. Armada, Deaf Judges, and others. It is of course free and should get started around 9:30.

If none of that is your bag, there's also Lake City at the Caledonia, My Unborn Children (decent music for a cringe-inducing band name) at Flicker, and Jeremy Wheatley at Go Bar.

SAT: More Jammy Jamm at the Watt with what seems like an even bigger lineup - featuring Folklore, Iron Hero, King Of Prussia, and The Buddy System among other. Again, cheap as free and beginning around 9.

Also, there's Nightengale News at Go Bar, The Brothers Marler at Tasty World, and Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band at the Melting Point.

Tonight In Athens

Dark Meat returns to Athens fresh off their SXSW trip to perform at the 40 Watt. With them are Quiet Hooves and Israel's Monotonix - who were hyped here a day or two ago by Dark Meat members and who apparently have an Iggy Pop-looking singer.

Also, there's our Jay Gonzalez at Kingpin's like he is (awesomely) every Thursday, Guff at Tasty World, and Christopher Without His Liver at Flicker.

Sleepy Horses & Summerbirds In The Cellar perform at the Caledonia... the latter fresh back from their opening show for REM in Austin.

Also, it's "McBrayer's Open Mic-Stand-Up Comedy Explosion" at Flicker. Basically, Pete McBrayer hosts a comedy open-mic night at Flicker and in between acts does some jokes. He keeps trying to make a point to me that it's not him doing his whole act or anything, but since he doesn't ever perform anymore, a few jokes here and there is better than none.

SXSW Coverage

In the old days, I would dig through a buncha online places to look for press clippings and video clips from Athens bands at SXSW... but work doesn't really permit that these days. So, I'll ask y'all to post in the comments any that you find today or this week. Hopefully our bands got some great reviews. Here's one that was posted in the comments this weekend.

Also, if you're in a band returning from Austin, let us know how it was when you get a moment.

Local Music at SXSW

Here's your chance to listen to local band The Whigs' set from SXSW 2008. NPR is streaming various shows from the festival, including non-local acts My Morning Jacket (with new material), Yo La Tengo, and a band I've enjoyed lately, Vampire Weekend. I'm sure more will be up soon, but if anyone runs across any other streams of local bands, post the links in the comments section.

This Weekend in Athens

Friday:

It's a relatively quiet music weekend in Athens. There's Subrig Destroyer at the Caledonia, Gemini Cricket at Flicker, Tony Tidwell and Timber at Little Kings, Betsy Franck and the Bareknuckle Band at the new Rye Bar, and The Help at Tasty World.

Saturday:

There's some music that is part of the Athens Human Right Festival Celebration over at Little Kings.

Other than that, I got nothing for you. Feel free to chime in with any suggestions, folks. It's been a somewhat quiet few weeks of music, Athens, and I don't like it!

Help Athens Animal Control

I am reposting this from a Kingpin's myspace bulletin. Please spread the word if you are interesting in helping. From someone who spent a few years working as an administrator for a large animal shelter, I can tell you that all animal shelters need any help they can get. And this seems pretty darn easy!
Zootoo.com is staging a great contest, giving money away to the top 20 finalists in their shelter makeover competition. All you have to do is sign up, which gives the shelter of your choice points that go towards a running total. Currently, Athens Animal Control is in 60th place out of thousands participating. They could sure use some bucks to help out our local needy animals!

Also, keep checking in with us for future events held at Kingpins that will support local rescue efforts.

Go to zootoo.com/makeover or link to the site through our own page, www.kingpins.us. Then search by zip code for Athens Animal Control, and choose the FIRST one of the two (for some reason they have two listed). OR of course choose a shelter nearer to you if you're not in Athens. Thanks!

DBT On Demand

KM wrote us recently with a heads up for all you DBT fans with Comcast...
Hey guys - I know you like your Drive By Truckers info, so... I'm watching (or trying to watch) Drive By Truckers on Comcast On Demand. Their 40 Watt shows from a couple years back is in the free Music section, under the "concert.tv" section. It's just been added, so I assume it'll be available all month.

I'm sure everyone at TDJ has already seen this show...

Oh, and don't forget to check out my 2008 RPM album:
http://karatemedia.com/the16points/ -- yeah, yeah, I'm pushing this on everybody... I'm not totally happy with the final results, but it was a lot of fun and it made me sit down and record. It's nice to be forced to put my money where my mouth is. Humbling, too. There were a lot of talented people participating this year.
Happy watching if you can get it to work. I guess you get what you pay for?

This Spring Break In Athens

Yup, that time a year again. Time for keg-stands and funnels and whippits and Kilo and... hell, I'm showing my age...

FRI: Philadelphia's Pattern Is Movement drops into town on tour. They're at the Caledonia. Locals (and big time fans) We Versus The Shark and Cinemechanica play as well.

A much softer show can be had at Flicker earlier on with Heather Heyn and Andy From Denver (the dude from M Coast) playing, obviously, their solo material. It is Flicker after all.

SAT: Semi-local hardcore-awesome band Harvey Milk plays the Caledonia with the Melvins' Joe Preston in on bass. Really, I know this gets said about a lot of bands, but if you haven't heard Harvey Milk live, you really can't get the feel on the records. Very, very worth seeing. In addition, Pride Parade's playing on that bill as well, with a new album in the can and plenty of new material to play. Great show for fans of loud.

There's also Sweet-Tooth Simpleton at Flicker.

Oh, and there's some seriously late night shows at The Secret Squirrel both Friday and Saturday night with a buncha bands stopping through on their way to SXSW. Check the above link for more info.

SUN: A. Armada and new punk-ish act The Jack Burton perform at Transmet.

MON: Page Campbell will be playing solo material at Flicker.

WED: Semi-local rock act The Brothers Gore perform at Flicker. They just befriended us on Myspace, and I really dug what I heard there. Venice Is Sinking is listed in F'pole's listing for this show, but I think that's a misprint, as I think their residency skips this week and continues on next week.

THURS: Birds & Wire host a CD release show at the Caledonia. Meanwhile, Jay Gonzalez plays his new Thursday night slot at Kingpin's. And Rob Veal's at Tasty World, unfortunately now timing up with Jay's show twice in a row.

SAT (3/15) - Happy Ides! I got nuthin'!

That's it y'all. I'm out to the left coast till next weekend. Advertise what I missed in the comments. Be back on St. Pat's with new posts.

Afternoon Reading

I just ran across this recent interview with local musician/songwriter/producer/engineer David Barbe, in which he discusses all kinds of things Athens music related. The site also contains interviews with some other Georgia musicians (Drive-By Truckers, Col. Bruce Hampton, etc.), including a fairly forthcoming two-part interview with Todd Nance of Widespread Panic. A former Athens resident authored both, so his insights tie in to a lot of Athens' music history.

Tonight In Athens

Bo Bedingfield & The Wydelles play their first show in a while at Tasty World tonight. According to Bo, he doesn't usually (or ever?) book shows... people just book them and then ask him or his band to play on their bill. Someone start booking more shows for them.

Jay Gonzalez, as we hadn't figured out yet this time last week, has moved his Kingpin's shows to Thursdays now. Which makes a weekday night out easier to bear, I think - even with the slight time change (now 9-12). Check out his cover tunes and originals (and theme nights) at Kingpins soon.

Also, Bloodkin's playing the Caledonia, which doesn't happen often. And Loose Cannon (Mark Brut's full band) will be opening the show.

Tonight In Athens

Circulatory System emerges from their underground lair as they seem to do about once a season these days to play for the masses. Tonight's show is at Little Kings with Ham 1, Nana Grizol, and Madeline amongst others.

Also, by F'pole's description (and not by anything any band members who frequent this site actually told us about), Venice Is Sinking is apparently taking up a Wednesday night residency at Flicker for a month or so - no doubt playing some material from their newly-completed second LP. Joining them tonight are frequent gig-mates The Ginger Envelope.

And Music Hates You continues what would be a residency if not for its sporadic nature over at Tasty World. I haven't heard 'em with their new drummer yet. Hope it's still as good.

The 40 Watt's hosting another great mid-week free show tonight featuring Pegasuses-XL, Bomb The Music Industry, and Deaf Judges amongst others. I think that tonight's show in in celebration of the newest release by Pegasuses-XL, but I maybe mistaken there.

Meanwhile, Diet Rockstar, The HEAP, and Kenosha Kid will all be next door at the Caledonia.

And while it's on my mind, the Pegasuses show reminds me that it's a new month and thus a new free tune from We Versus The Shark. (3 for 3!)
