Tonight In Athens

Mother Jackson's Paul McHugh (the one sitting down - I'm too lazy to crop it) will be performing at Flicker tonight. Mother Jackson used to perform all the friggin' time, but it seems like it's been a while since I've posted their name. Are they on a break? The next show I see on their myspace that's not a Flicker is around AthFest. Anyway, this is your best chance to get your MJ fix, I guess. If that's the fix you need.

Tonight In Athens

Fairmount Fair (sans Jimmy... so just Ian... and not as much rap) will be at Little Kings tonight. The poster pretty much says it all, which is why it's really big.

Tonight In Athens

Rock N' Roll Trivia takes place at Little Kings tonight. It's free and you can play in teams to show off your chops in the music nerd world. Starts at 8PM. Afterwards, you can see Nightengale News in the very same venue, starting at 11 PM.

Around the same time as the rock trivia, sadly, is David Barbe & The Quick Hooks at the Caledonia Lounge. That show starts around 8PM, and I'm assuming this is the would-be outdoor show (usually happen in the spring and fall, around when the weather is awesome like it is now) - if not for complaints that have ruined them in the past. Anyway, that's a group of supertalented folks in that group. Very worth seeing.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

How was your Twilight? Hope it was a blast. Drop us a line in the comments.

For my money, as a wise man once said, "Every day is a wasted day if you don't listen to The France." Ice & Co. might've just proven that right on Saturday night. Also, that song has the weirdest video (very NSFW):

Rock on, Je Suis France. Rock on.

Weird Saturday Post

Okay, postin' on a Saturday is weird, but for anyone who stops by over the weekend, I thought I'd note that someone told me that Clay Leverett will be on the Billy Dilworth Show (channel 32, duh!) tonight. That's right. Clay. On Billy Dilworth. For real. Word has it he bargained for this gig before he agreed to play the re-opening of the Toccoa Town Hall or something like that. Clay is hilarious.

Athens Band Debuts on MTV2 This Weekend

You can catch local band The Buddy System's video debut for their song "Clap Paws" on MTV2 Monday morning at 1 a.m. (or Sunday night, if you prefer). The visual show is a neat part of what this band's all about since they're all artists. Here's a preview of the video that will be aired.

This Weekend In Athens

It's Twilight time...

FRI: The annual "Frilight Delirium", a spinoff of the famed Saturday night celebration, takes place at Little Kings and features the rarely-performing but totally awesome Bugs Eat Books as well as several acts you really only see at these sort of JSF-crew-centric shows including Crewsin' For A Brewsin, Nipples For Days, and Si, Claro. Get in on the party.

There's also a large lineup at the Caledonia featuring Cinemechanica and Mouser amongst others. And within earshot, at Farm 255, you can hear the HEAP and Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise.

And don't miss out on Patrick Carey, Don Chambers, & Mother Jackson at Flicker; The Brothers Gore at Rye Bar; Old Crow Medicine Show at Georgia Theatre; and/or DJ Mahogany, Garbage Island, and Martyr & Pistol at Go Bar ... you know there's kinda something for everyone around tonight.

SAT: Since it's Twilight, there's entertainment (and hopefully funnel cakes) to be sought in the afternoon. So, Ishues, Deaf Judges, Geoff Reacher, and others can be seen, for free, at Farm 255 around 2:30 PM (later, DJ Mahogany will spin, but that's not till 10:30).

The Twilight Delirium is at 40 Watt and it's the 10th anniversary of the existence of Je Suis France. A big happy birfday to the France! I went to school with some of those guys, so I'm officially old even by Athens scenester standards. That being said, they've never stopped rocking and every show brings a great surprise. Honestly, I don't see as much rap as I'd like on that bill, but who knows what waits in store. The Buddy System and others are there too. Jamm on, France. Jamm on.

Also, Old Crow Medicine Show continues a 2-night stand at the Georgia Theatre, The Dictatortots are at Tasty World, and for something completely off that path, Canopy Studios is performing their Spring show, "Water Body", as a finale this week.

SUN: Athens 441 tapes at the Melting Point with Don Chambers, Snake Oil Medicine Show, and The Wrights. Doors at 6 PM, taping starts promptly at 7 PM.

Happy Birthday, Legal Bitch!

The first of the TDJ reign of Tauruses gets her birthday on today. Legal Bitch used to post here, but not really so much anymore. That being said, anyone willing to cruise the archives for "Tales From The Real O.C." is in for a treat.

Anyway, she's awesome, and I count myself lucky to have her as a friend. Happy Birthday, Legal Bitch!

Flicker's hosting three great acts tonight. First is the rarely-performing Druid City, then there's the oft-performing Madeline (which is a good thing), and finally there's former local boy turned Texan Geoff Reacher. Ask Robo about the nicknames. Okay, seriously, don't.

It's..........Lazy Student!

Howdy all,

Due to my titular laziness (and the fact that it is the last week of the semester before finals) it has taken me a couple of days to get around to this, my first post on The Day Jobs. I'm really looking forward to helping our government crash our economy by reducing the work production of you, our readers. So without further ado:

Firstly, check out the new logo for the UK's "Office of Governmental Commerce" over there on the right. I'll leave it as an exercise for our readers to figure out whats so funny about it.

Second, we all love the A-Team right? If you don't you probably should just get back to filling out those TPS reports. If you are a true American, though, here is the first episode of "Bring Back the A-Team." Possibly the best TV since the A-Team was taken off the air.

Spoiler: He does get the Mr. T interview and it is well worth the wait!

Tonight In Athens

Venice Is Sinking ... back at Flicker and ready to rock. Tonight's show also features Tin Cup Prophette.

Hey, remember when garage rock was all the rage? So does The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who cruise into the 40 Watt tonight.

And for a touch of louder, there's Music Hates You and Thunderchief at Tasty World

Our Next President ... From the Future!

In honor of the big primary today, here's a photography site that has pictures of how the candidates might look in 4 years, as they pass through the hyper-aging gauntlet that is the highest office in the land.

Tonight In Athens

Is it the end of the month already? Guess so. So, it's time again for McBrayer's Open Mic Stand-Up Explosion! - a name that begs for an exclamation point, so I've given it one. It's the only time Pete still does stand-up these days, even if just for brief 5-10 minute segments. Plus, he says there's other funny people there too. Check it at the Flicker at 8:30.

Welcome, Lazy Student

Despite being productively lazy around here, we have been busy adding some new bloggers to the fold as, sadly, Mail Clerk's time in Athens draws closer to the end. So, on that note, I'd like to welcome Lazy Student to The Day Jobs.

I know Lazy Student firsthand, and can vouch that not only is he actually lazy, but he's also quite funny too. I'm looking forward to his additions to the site, and hope y'all will stick around with us as we undergo these changes. Welcome, LS!

Update: I also would like to wish Mike White, our very talented local photographer, a happy birthday! We are so glad you call Athens home, Mike!

My Mixtape Can Beat Up Your Mixtape

Hola amigos. First, a clarification. A couple of folks have asked if I am "taking over" The Day Jobs. Nope. I'm just an "official" contributor. Mail Clerk will keep doing Tonight in Athens until he leaves town, and Desktop Publisher and I will be providing other content. You know, like a head on a stick, for instance.

The Next Big Thing on the music blogs this past month is Muxtape. Basically, you can make a mix tape out of any mp3s you want and put them on the web. The service agreement says you must have permission to post the songs, but it's very "wink-wink". You can't search it, but you can link to your own. Mine's here. Check it out before the RIAA launches a tactical nuclear strike. Files have to be in mp3 format, so you may have to convert them if they're in Itunes. If you're a Mac geek, there's a cool app called Fluid that you can set up to be a virtual jukebox. It gives you a thumbnail preview of the next three or four Muxtape links. I looked for something similar for Firefox, but everything I found was little clunky.

It was only after I'd finished that I realized my mix tape had DBT's Nine Bullets and Boomtown Rats' I Don't Like Mondays. So if I go on a killing spree this weekend, don't say you weren't warned!

Congratulations

Just wanted to say a quick congratulations to our friends BJ & Chance on getting married. Very happy for y'all.

And also, a belated congratulations to new father Karate Media! He's going to be raising a child, folks, for reals. Congrats, KM!

This Weekend In Athens

Quick and lazy-like cause I'm tired...

FRI: Sweet-Tooth Simpleton & The Simpletones perform at Flicker.

Hope For Agoldensummer's at Nuci's Space.

Also, Canopy Studio is opening their new show "Water Body" tonight, if you're up for something different. That's trapeze, for y'all who don't know. Pretty talented folks there.

SAT: Andy From Denver and The New Sound of Numbers are at the Go Bar.

The Brothers Gore perform at the new Allen's location.

A. Armada's at the Caledonia.

SUN:
The Secret Squirrel hosts a show featuring Mouser, Titans of Filth and others.

Meet Stickhead

Look out for Stickhead in Atlanta traffic.

Tonight In Athens

While I'm still happy that Canadaphilia faded in the rock press, it's awesome to see The New Pornographers rolling into town tonight. They're at the Georgia Theater and Okkervil River opens the show - a pretty appropriate combo. Please don't freak them out with your strange and different culture.

Speaking of strange and different, two different members of Garbage Island will be doing shows at Flicker - Mark Kaczmarek and Craig Lieske.

But before all that - there's Patrick Carey at the Caledonia at 6 PM for a special Happy Hour show.

And if you're looking for more upscale or more "free", the UGA Symphony Orchestra will be performing at Hodgson Hall.

(T)Roll Call

Greetings TDJers,

Library Troll here. My real name's Pete, and many of us have met. I just adopted "Library Troll" as a hat-tip to The Day Jobs original incarnation. I've been a fan of TDJ for a long time, so when Mail Clerk sent out the call I signed up. The negotiations were something like this:

MC: We're moving soon, we need more bloggers!

Me: Well, I'll chip in ... you know, maybe a couple of times a year ...

MC: Great! You're hired! Here's the keys, if you need anything, we'll be in Bermuda!

Getting me to blog about music is like getting Gordon Lamb to blog about sports: potentially hilarious, in an awkward "Borat" sort of way, but probably unenlightening. But The Day Jobs community is cool, and I'd hate to see it fizzle out after MC and company leave town, so I'm taking one for the team.

I'll need LOTS of help, though. So for my first post, how about saying hello in the comments, and leaving a URL or two of your favorite blogs - music ones especially appreciated. My two (non-music) that I've been reading daily for a while now are Comics Curmudgeon and By Ken Levine. And if that doesn't convince you how completely unqualified I am to blog on the Athens music scene, nothing will.

Welcome, Library Troll!

Today, we're adding our first blogger in like 2 years or so. It's been a long time coming, but Library Troll's gonna help us out with another take on Athens entertainment. Yes, we're sticking with the dumb monikers. Anyway, I know him in real life, and he's definitely got the chops, so hopefully he'll be adding to the fun that is TDJ.

In addition, the call is still out for maybe 1-2 more folks if any of you wanna take the plunge and blog away your life.

Tonight In Athens

Patterson Hood, on a break from DBT-bidness, hits the road for some solo shows this week. It all starts at the Watt tonight and backing him will be David Barbe, John Neff, Jay Gonzalez, and Brad Morgan. Not sure if we'll get any solo material from those folks or not.

And right up the road, Venice Is Sinking brings it to Flicker once more in their now-nearing-completion (this week? next week?) residency. Lucas is pulling double-duty tonight cause Big Gray's there too.

Just across the street from all that, and definitely within earshot, Music Hates You will play at Little Kings with several other acts.

Finally, Valerie Plame Wilson will be speaking at the UGA Chapel at 7:30. Spy stuff.

More Tonight in Athens

Just got the last minute notice that Jack Logan will be showcasing his art, and performing, tonight at Jittery Joe's in Five Points from 6 to 9 p.m.

Bush's War

In case some of y'all missed it, Jayne posted a link a few days back in the comments to a PBS/Frontline documentary called Bush's War, which you can watch all of for free here. Based on the title, I didn't think I was gonna dig it - cause Bush-bashing these days is like getting a good slam in on Gigli.

However, so far it's a fantastic insider view of the workings of the cabinet in the days post-9/11 and leading up to Iraq. Well worth the time. If it sucks at the end, I'll retract all this.

Tonight In Athens

Fairmount Fair will be at Flicker... and actually it's only one half of the duo, so it's pretty much Ian jamming it out solo. Just like Ghostface sans the Wu. But different. Ian? Anyway, it's part of a larger bill that starts at Flicker time (9-ish).

We're Old

This blog was 4 yesterday. That's a long time in the blog world. As usual, we all forgot. The only way I remembered was an early birthday greeting from Pylon's singer via our MySpace page (thanks Vanessa!), so not a bad way to be remembered after starting out as 2 bored 20-somethings at University jobs looking towards grad degrees.

This Weekend In Athens

Osborne Classic Film Fest Schedule here.

FRI: A very quiet night, especially compared to what all's going on tomorrow. There is a big free show courtesy of the Hey Guys crew over at Go Bar - features Mouser and a buncha other acts.

And the now-rarely-appearing experimental act Garbage Island will be at the Caledonia.

SAT: Ghostface Killah comes to Athens. He'll be at the Georgia Theatre and Athens' own Deaf Judges will be opening the show. This is the first I can remember of any member of the Wu making it here. Kinda cool.

DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be spinning at Little Kings for free. He's trading off 30 minute sets with another DJ. Mostly funk and rap, but OVOR's not to be contained... promises at least a 30 minute set of Go Go and various other eccentricities.

Dancer Vs. Politician
at the Go Bar. Heather Heyn's there too. Meanwhile, Don Chambers, the Ice Cream Socialists, and many other acts will perform at Tasty World as part of the Relay For Life benefit.

And finally, there's Five-Eight at the Melting Point

SUN: Another big Sunday lineup (yep, we missed the first one) at Farm 255, this time with Folklore, Summer Hymns, The Visitations, and more. And free, of course.

Birmingham's 13ghosts come to town tonight to perform at the Caledonia. Opening for them will be Sleepy Horses. And earlier in the night (at Happy Hour!) Mother Jackson's Paul McHugh will perform.

Another happy hour choice would be David Blackmon's new project Curley Maple at Trappeze from 5-7 PM.

This is also the opening night for Robert Osborne's Classic Film Festival at the Classic Center. Tonight's show is Mel Brooks' awesome Young Frankenstein. The guest speaker will be casting director Mike Fenton. The show starts at 8:30 PM. Get the rest of the schedule here.

Tonight In Athens

Guess who? Venice Is Sinking is back at Flicker! Who've they brought with 'em this time? Well, Jesse Flavin - a natural choice for Flicker's setting - and The Dumps... wha?!? Yes, the Dumps will be at Flicker. Is this an acoustic show? How with this work? I've been wondering that ever since I thought it had to be a mis-print on their flyer for these shows. Hopefully, it'll work well.

Also, there's Thunderchief at the 40 Watt or Cars Can Be Blue at Farm 255, both parts of bigger lineups and both for free.

Attn Conspiracy Fans

I was walking to work the other day and noticed a University Union flyer saying that Valerie Plame Wilson (you know, the CIA lady who was outed by the Bush Administration because her husband said that their intelligence was wrong... or something like that) will be speaking at UGA on April 16th. Thought that was kinda cool - and as no one tipped me off about the big Classic Center to-do with all the former secretaries of state the other day, figured I'd give everyone the heads up. More info here.

Attn Nick Lowe Fans

Recently stumbled onto this site. I think everyone else already knew about it. Anyway, as Nick Lowe fans already know, most of his stuff's outta print. Well, this guy's done us the favor of uploading them in decent quality as full albums. Most are from CD, a couple from LP. Just do a search of the archives (or do an advanced Google search with "Nick Lowe" in that URL). The links/password are in the comments for each post.

Also, Flat Duo Jets fans will wanna search there as well.

UPDATE: Want to add the disclaimer that you should of course buy these albums if you like 'em when they're re-released.

Tonight In Athens

It's a pop extravaganza at the Flicker tonight with Andy From Denver, Keith John Adams, and The Velcro Stars. It's like a mini-Popfest all to itself.

Also, over at the Go Bar, you can see Pegasuses-XL, and some new super-group/side-project featuring called Jail Moves amongst others. The F'pole description of the latter reads, "Featuring members of Mouser, We Versus the Shark, Dark Meat, Summer Hymns, Quiet Hooves, Cars Can Be Blue, Holy Liars, etc." (By that description, I'm pretty sure that could just be a 3-piece.)

Tonight In Athens

We Versus The Shark and Deaf Judges are among the acts performing at Farm 255 tonight. Strange venue (being outside) for loud acts, but if the weather's nice, oughta be cool. Also, it's a new month, and with that comes a new free WVTS cover song.

Man, I need to get my head and my ass wired together. This was apparently last night. What good is a blog for w/o timely info? Anyway, my bad. Tonight you can see Summerbirds In The Cellar at the 40 Watt. The WVTS track is valid, so their picture stays up (and I'm too lazy to change it).

This Weekend In Athens

Hey, steady steady...

FRI: The Gus Ramos Benefit takes place at the 40 Watt. Briefly, Gus was recently injured in a scooter crash and is still undergoing surgeries and in not-that-great condition as I understand it. Read more about it at the above link or on that poster to the right. The show features Dark Meat, Patrick Carey, Music Hates You, and many others. It's a great lineup for a great cause.

What if you hate great causes? Good question. Well, there's lotsa other shows going on too. Pride Parade keeps up their flurry of recent shows appearing at the Caledonia with Atlanta's Brass Castle and a local band called The Leavers who I've never heard or heard of.

There's also Russian Spy Camera at Farm 255, The Packway Handle Band at the Melting Point, and DJ Mahogany at Go Bar.

Finally, there's something cool going on that we've never much given attention to, and I've only recently learned about: fairly regularly (monthly?), the Athens Symphony Orchestra performs for free at the Classic Center. Their Spring show is tonight and is at 8 PM. You do need to go to the box office to pick up tickets, but they're usually still available at show time. Just wanted to give y'all a heads up.

SAT: It's DJ Mahogany's birthday (Happy Birthday!) and to celebrate he's having a party at Little Kings and spinning pretty much any damn thing he wants to. There's gonna be free cake and mix CD's. Also, there's bands, such as The Ginger Envelope, performing (making Patrick and the birthday DJ pull double-duty this weekend).

You can also catch the Buddy System at Go Bar, Christopher's Liver at Rye Bar, and an increasingly rare swing-through-down by the Dromedary Quartet, who are at the Melting Point.

Keith Richards Interview

Thanks to Kevin for passing along this great Keith Richards interview.

Tonight In Athens

It's an night when E6 and OG Athens meet up as A Che Why (Bob Hay's side project), New Sound Of Numbers, and Supercluster (featuring members of Pylon and the New Sound Of Numbers) all perform at the 40 Watt. Is anyone pulling triple duty in this lineup. Not sure, but there's some crossover.

Jay Gonzalez is listed as playing at Kingpin's. I'm not 100% sure this is happening as I know he's making those shows monthly instead of weekly very soon. Plus, he'll be hitting the road sometime soon as well. So, if he is playing (Jay, are you?), then y'all should go catch him cause you won't be able to see him there again for a month.

David Blackmon's newest project Curley Maple performs at Trappeze. Before you ask, I don't know where Trappeze is and I don't know what Curley Maple sounds like, but David's great at what he does, so I'm sure it's good.

There's also the odd lineup of The Dumps, Diego Catalan (Mother Jackson's Jim Wilson), and David Dondero at the Caledonia.

Athens Musicians Can't Stand Being In Tune

Okay, I can't help but post this. It's a quote from a recent interview with the Modern Skirts from a publication in Savannah. To try to avoid Hannity-ing this, I'm posting as much of the relevant info around the quote as possible, putting my emphasis in bold (and providing the full name for info's sake and editing the one curse word for your work-safe viewing):
When asked if, a few years into their upwards trajectory, the band is finally feeling a bit of backlash in their local music scene, [bassist JoJo] Glidewell chuckles.

“Actually, the backlash has kind of subsided. It happened pretty much immediately! In Athens, there’s a lot of hardcore indie music, and among those folks, it’s considered selling out to tune your guitar (laughs). For something as palatable as we are, some folks would actually come up and mock us openly in the street. You know, like, ‘Look at that famous guy,’” he says.

“On the flip side, we’ve had people say, ‘I used to think you guys were bulls***, until I saw you play, and it turns out you’re really good (laughs).’ In reality, 100 miles outside Athens, we still often play to nobody.”
No, this is not an April Fool's Joke. In case you want to read the whole article, it's here. But I've snipped all the relevant info pertaining to the quote above. So, y'all indie rockers out there get to tunin'!
