FRI: Lots of going-ons around town this weekend. There is an early show outside on the Caledonia porch this evening. Love those outdoor shows in the spring! The music starts around 9 p.m. with Rob Veal (joined by William Tonks and Jon Mills) followed by The Wydelles.
Dancer vs. Politician, among others, are over at the 40 Watt, Grogus performs outside on Farm 255's patio, Titans of Filth and others at Flicker, and hey, maybe someone out there cares, the Oak Ridge Boys are at over the Harbor Club Polo Arena tonight (wherever that is).
SAT: At 6:30 p.m. there's a Cornhole Tournament over at Little Kings to celebrate their 4 year anniversary. White Tiger BBQ, which I just recently tried, is supplying the food, and DJ Voices Other Rooms, Mandy Jane and the Jaws of Life, and Timber will be supplying the music (word is 9 pm on the music). DJ Mahagony will be doing his thing there later at midnight. Madeline will also be doing an early show around 6 at Trax.
Athica is hosting an event called "Adventures in Mysticism," named after the current exhibit, which will feature the music of John Fernandez, (acoustic) Telenovela, and Divided Like A Saint's. Music Hates You is bringing the loud over to the Caledonia, and The Buddy System and Spring Tigers will be around the corner at Flicker.
Also, don't forget about the Farmer's Market at Bishop Park from 8 to 11 a.m. I have yet to make it out, but I definitely support the cause. Anyone have any input on the first two farmers' markets they've held this year?

A fun night in the A-T-H. It's almost like a variety showcase night. We've got stand-up comedy (by local folks) at the Caledonia, as well as Cars Can Be Blue and DJ Kurt Wood, Hope for Agoldensummer at Flicker, and a free movie night at the 40 Watt (a good one, to boot...Rude Boy, the 1980 documentary about The Clash). Night 1 of the Athens Americana show starts tonight at Little Kings. Tonight's performers include Bo Bedingfield, Clay Leverett, Betsy Franck and the Bare Knuckle Band, David Blackmon and his new project Curley Maple, and Adam Klein. (If anyone has information on the order and times of this event, don't be shy about sharing it.)
And, of course, one must not forget, the season finale of Lost.

No links today guys. Sorry, too busy this morning. A little more choice than last night on the music front.
Jeremy Wheatley (Tin Cup Prophette, The Low Lows, Je Suis France) performs solo at the 283 Bar, as well as another solo performer, Mark Brut, at the Rye Bar. Diet Rock Star and a new Craig Lieske project, Trash Raft, will be bringing their experimental sounds over to the 40 Watt. Update: Jay Gonzalez will be opening around 10/10:30. American Cheeseburger, along with a few other bands that bring the heavy, will be at Little Kings.
And if none of that strikes your fancy, there's a Sewing Group event over at the Madison County Library. (Yes Sloan, I stole that picture from your site. Thanks!)

So how was everyone's 3 day weekend? Tell us what's happening.
I'm a few days late, but she was out of town so now that she's back, I'd like to wish our friend Beth Bedingfield a big ole' happy birthday!

How To Handle A Bomb Threat - posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:01 AM | Permanent Link
While cleaning up my place (getting ready to move eventually ::sniffle::), I found a checklist from an old job at UGA that instructed receptionists (I wasn't one, so don't know how I got this) on how to handle a bomb threat. Particularly interesting are the questions you're supposed to ask about the bomb and that you should listen up for any "crockery" in the background of the calls. Enjoy:

Wow, it's Memorial Day Weekend, but kinda seems like the pre-AthFest lull mighta' hit... Also, dumbass me forgot to mention that Bubbapalooza is this weekend at the Star Bar in ATL. Last night was Redneck GReece Deluxe, but there's lotsa other stuff happening too. Thanks to Shannon for the heads up on that one. FRI: The Dexter Romweber Duo roll into town tonight to perform at the 40 Watt. Dexter, of course, best known for his membership in another duo: The Flat Duo Jets, onetime Athenians and stars of Athens, GA: Inside/Out. Dexter's calmed a bit since then, but the music still rocks. Ham 1 is also on the bill.
Also, there's Sleepy Horses at Flicker and DJ Mahogany at the Go Bar.
SAT:Dave Marr, former singer for the legendary Star Room Boys, performs as part of benefit show at Tasty World. Expect the set to be a mix of SRB material and a good cover or two thrown in for good measure. Not sure if any of the "trio" members are playing with him or if it's a solo show, but either way it'll be good (and infrequent, so go see it!). Don Chambers is there as well.
SUN:STRIKEFORCE! continues its Sunday residency in the only venue they play: Kingpins. After questioning who these mystery men were last week, there's been an informative Flagpole ABC Box (by David Eduardo - one of my favorite music journalists around town) and we received a response from William Tonks stating:
So far the cast has included Rob Veal, Mike Gibson, Jon Mills, Brian Crane, Randy Durham, Crumpy Edwards, Pete Sackett, Todd McBride and William Tonks. That's representing bands Dashboard Saviors, Barbara Cue, Dave Barbe's Quick Hooks, W.E/R.I., White Buffalo, Redneck GReece Delux, Gravity Creeps, The La-Di-Das and many others! And it is indeed every Sunday, but the cast varies from week to week, thus so does the setlist, but it's been fun every time.
So, check 'em out. They start around 8 and it's free.
MON (Happy Memorial Day!): I'm assuming Rock N' Roll Trivia's still going on, even though it's Memorial Day. Y'all?

We all love food here at The Dayjobs. Maybe we need a joint with a menu like this to inject a little mystery in our dining. (Oh well, blogger isn't wanting to publish inline images today for me. Here's a link.)
Secondly, you should get your bosses to pay me from the training budget as I'm 'bout to drop some Photoshop knowledge on you. This series: "You Suck at Photoshop" is hilariously educational. Study hard because you may be quizzed on your skills later this week. Now you know...and knowing is half the battle. Go Joe!!

Sometimes Barbara Cue frontman William Tonks performs tonight at the Melting Point and will likely be playing many songs from his solo album Catch (on the newly-revitalized Ghostmeat Records).
Also, Tasty World's got rapper Son 1 & The Insurgents.

Politically, today should be a decisive day. Maybe you can help decide who wins the Democratic Presidential nominee by playing this game from the New York Post. If you don't care about politics, I would recommend imagining that the person you are hitting is someone you don't like. (Perhaps Robo can pretend it's Chris Martin from Coldplay.)

Former Dashboard Savior Rob Veal will be at Tasty World tonight. He's a great songwriter and well worth seeing if you ever get a chance. Tonight would be a good chance.

FRI:The Arcs are back! The local super-group of sorts plays its second (or third depending on what you count) show at the Caledonia tonight. It's fair to say that the vast majority of the attendees at their last show thought it rocked. Because it did. Tonight they're with The Empties and Olympus Mans.
Just up the street, the now-infrequently performing Lona (who just re-released their first album and are supposedly going to deliver the oft-delayed follow-up album this year - just like Guns N' Roses will) play the Georgia Theatre tonight. Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band will be there too.
For a more bluegrass-y feel, there's 16 Tons and Curley Maple at the Melting Point. And for the best of local R&B, Ben Stevens can be heard at Little Kings.
SAT: The big show tonight is undoubtedly the Fat Man showcase at the Georgia Theatre. The lineup is: Matias (10:00), Buddy System (10:30), Fairmount Fair - as a duo? (11:00), Casper & the Cookies (11:30), Deaf Judges (12:00), and Venice is Sinking (12:30) who are recording their newest album at least in part at that very venue. Helluva lineup.
There are actually a couple of other showcase style shows - the Superfluous Umlaut showcase at the Caledonia and the Gypsies Killing Unicorns showcase at the 40 Watt.
Finally, there's some dancing to be had Rye Bar with DJ Mahogany and at Little Kings with Bitch Switch.
SUN:Kingpin's hosts a new house band called Strike Force, the description of which in Flagpole sounds fantastic: "The new house band at Kingpins features members of Barbara Cue, Southern Bitch and The Dashboard Saviors, rocking covers (Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, etc.) and originals." Sounds like my peeps, but I haven't heard about this - details, y'all?
Most Disturbing Songs Ever, Part II - posted by Mail Clerk @ 2:05 AM | Permanent Link
A year ago tomorrow, I started a very short list of the most disturbing songs ever. These were songs that were not outrightly provocative (i.e. death metal or Marilyn Manson or 2 Live Crew or whatever), but more subtley off-putting.
In short, people liked it. So, what do hacks like us do when provided with a moderate amount of positive feedback - re-hash the same thing with less dedication. Voila: More of the most disturbing songs ever:
Sample: Johnny: If i were a carpenter And you were a lady. Would you marry me anyway? Would you have my baby?
June: If you were a carpenter and i were a lady. I'd marry you anyway. I'd have your baby.
"Would you have my baby?"... that's the thing that really does it. Otherwise, it's a love song that basically asks, "If I were poor, would you still love me?" Fair question. But the proposition and subsequent affirmation of baby-making is just odd - there's something very primal in that statement. Granted, it's not as weird as when Method Man suggested to Missy that they should "go halves on a baby", but I think he was joking. These folks sound - and apparently were very much - serious about the prospect. And the whole world had to hear about it. Seriously, take a look at that picture... they were great musicians, but leaving the baby-making out of the spotlight might've made sense. Just sayin's, all.
Video with creepy intro featuring glimpse into homelife:
Sample: "Just the other night I thought I heard you cry Asking me to come And hold you in my arms I can hear your prayers Your burdens I will bear But first I need your hand Then forever can begin...
For you are not alone For I am here with you"
Color me cheap for going back to the well here, but let's face it: Michael Jackson softly singing "You are not alone, for I am here with you" creeps everyone out. No one relates this song to a man and a woman in love. No one. Everyone thinks about the same thing when this song comes on: Macaulay Culkin. As much as his record company strove to make Michael Jackson romantic, it was never meant to be. And this single helps highlight that ultimate failure. Oh, and the public wasn't exactly clamoring to see Lisa Marie Presley semi-nude-ish either.
The video really is the most disturbing part. Unfortunately, the Google powers-that-be won't allow it to be embedded. So, soak it up here (even if you only watch the first 5 seconds, it will be worth it, trust me).
Sample "She went away, she cut me like a knife Hello beautiful thing, maybe you could save my life In just a glance, down here on magic street Loves a fool's dance And I ain't got much sense, but I still got my feet
The girls in their summer clothes In the cool of the evening light The girls in their summer clothes, pass me by"
First thing's first: I dig the new Springsteen album. It's great. That being said, when an over-the-hill dude starts singing about "girls in their summer clothes", and it's accompanied by a photo of that man leering and dressed in an undershirt and being too old to have a soul patch (scratch that: no one should ever have a soul patch), there's only one thing that comes to mind in this day and age and that's stalking. Creepy, dirty stalking. Do I think Bruce is going all American Beauty on us? Hopefully not. But the song is what the song is. And Bruce, it's weird. Bonus points for working the name Shaniqua into the lyrics, though.
Bruce as a homeless beach bum stalking girls with a video camera:
Sample: "I'd probably be just as crazy about you If you were my own man Maybe next lifetime (maybe next lifetime) Possibly (possibly) Until then, Oh friend your secret is safe with me
Dont cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me Dont cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me Dont cha, dont cha Dont cha wish your girlfriend was raw like me Dont cha wish your girlfriend was fun like me Dont cha, dont cha"
According to Wikipedia, the Pussycat Dolls, "began as a dance troupe based in Los Angeles, was "re-cast" as a music group in 2003." To me, they've always seemed like desperate failed actresses stuck in behind-the-scenes positions (assistants, PR, talent reps, etc.) with a "why let all these young bitches get all the fame" attitude. So, they formed a group and used their connections to make a big single. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. In any case, that desperation and stop-at-nothing-to-get-public-attention attitude bleeds over into that song like nobody's business. It just reeks of a girl so desperate for affection from anyone that she'll sell everything she is to get it. Guess what's not attractive? Psychotic desperation. Also, some of them look like trannies.
Feel the desperation of being not famous in your late 20's/early 30's in Hollywood (NSFW):
Sample: "I don't know why I love you like I do After all these changes you put me through The sixteen candles burning on my wall Turning me into the biggest fool of them all
I wanna know Oh won't you tell me Am I in love to stay?
Take me to the river And wash me down Won't you cleanse my soul Put my feet on the ground"
In the commentary for the "Stop Making Sense" DVD, David Byrne says that this song seemed to combine the two disparate/strange elements of extreme religion and teenage sex. At first, I thought that Mr. Byrne was just being odd like always and that the song really didn't imply the latter element. In re-reading the lyrics, it kinda does. And those two things together equal disturbing. I don't have much more to add to the topic, and I'm sure y'all're all familiar with that song. Maybe this ruined it for you. Or maybe it made it better... weirdo.
Here's both versions: (Al Green)
(Talking Heads)
Now, for a final bonus, here's Hassi's nomination from last time for creepiest video: Lionel Richie's "Hello". He basically just stalks a blind girl through a high school. I never thought the guy who was once known for dancing on the ceiling would haunt my nightmares (thanks for the suggestion Chris!):
That's all I got for now (and likely ever). Let me know what I missed.

Hayride re-emerges from some sort of extended hiatus to rock the hell out of the Caledonia. Of course, this happens on a night I have to be in Atlanta of all places... ugh. Anyway, those of you in town need to go see this show. The Dumps and Thrones (Joe Preston) are there too. Loud, heavy, awesome Tuesday.

FRI:Pride Parade finally releases their longtime-in-the-works debut LP, Descendants, tonight at the Caledonia. It's 11 tracks of heavy (well, mostly). Those familiar with their lives shows should know what to expect. Most of those songs have been staples in the set for a while now. Anyway, they're with A. Armada too.
Right next door, at the 40 Watt, you can catch Don Chambers with Producto. Both bands have relatively new material out now and Chambers is working on another new album due out this fall on WARM Recordings.
Y'all wanna dance? There's DJ Mahogany at Little Kings or Bitch Switch at Go Bar.
SAT: There's still a lot going on tonight, but it's all kinda spread out. There's Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise at the 40 Watt or the seemingly odd combo of Contraband at Allen's (but I guess burgers and video games are a natural combo), Pride Parade continuing their CD release weekend with an all ages show at Nuci's Space, or for pop fans there's Happy Happy Birthday To Me band Fishboy at the Caledonia with British Athens transplant Spring Tigers amongst others on that bill.
During the afternoon, there's something called the Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa going on near Agora. Not sure all about it, but you can see Summer Hymns at 4:30 PM and DJ Kurt Wood's spinning in between sets all afternoon. There's more info here.
Finally, both Friday and Saturday nights you can see the Athens Symphony Orchestra's 2008 Pops Concert at the Classic Center for free starting at 8 PM. Bring your own picnic or buy one there.
SUN:Betsy Franck will be at Farm 255 continuing their Sunday night shows. There's also a party at the Squirrel with Mouser and othere.

Reading Day - posted by Library Troll @ 1:10 PM | Permanent Link
Sorry I've been the Official Worst Guest Blogger ever. Birthday Fever hit two weeks ago (April 22, thanks for the gifts) and last week I almost got mugged walking home (two guys with guns, pretty scary). Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to it. I was going to write on the Flagpole Liner Notes column, but the commenters took over. My two cents: I'm all for any article that isn't deliberately inflammatory that provokes as much comment as that one did, whether I agree with it or not.
It's a beautiful spring day, which makes me want to do two things, one of which is read. You'll easily guess the other thing if I tell you it's not "drinking beer", since that is not something I "want" to do, it's something I "have" to do. So we'll stick to the reading, for now.
I usually read about three music books a year. The last two decent ones I read were back to back: Bob Spitz's Beatles biography and The Man Who Made the Beatles by Ray Coleman, a biography of Brian Epstein. I also read pretty much every Phil Spector article and biography out there ... I predict one day there's going to be a 6-hour HBO miniseries about him that's going to blow your mind.
Anybody got any music book recommendations? Novels, biographies, autobiographies, essays ... it's all fair game.

Nana Grizol performs at the Caledonia at the outset of an extensive May tour (click poster for dates). With them will be Fairmount Fair - presumably back as the unstoppable rap duo they often are, as Jimmy's back in town (post Elf Power tour). What I wanna know is when is there gonna be an entire fantasy rap night with Flip Scoldjah, FF, Excalibrah, etc... This needs to happen.

"...nonstop, and I don't care who's watching." FRI: The third annual Gimme Shelter Benefit takes place at 40 Watt tonight. If you're not familiar, it's a benefit to raise money for the local homeless shelter where bands all play music by one famous artist all night. This years performers include Jackpot City, Clay Leverett, The HEAP, William Tonks, and Supercluster amongst others performing the songs of Elton John. There's even a pre-party at Cine at 6:30 with a local version of the gameshow "Tell The Truth". Not entirely sure how that's gonna go, but there you have it.
Another big celebration happens at Tasty World, where they're having the AthFest CD Release Show with the Packway Handle Band, Timber, and Titans Of Filth. Also, the Dictatortots are playing there, but not on the same bill.
Meanwhile, there's also Iron Hero at the Caledonia. As mentioned in this week's Threats & Promises, there's some new tunes up on their MySpace page.
And last but note least, there's a couple of free shows featuring Kenosha Kid at Mercury Lounge and DJ Mahogany at Rye Bar.
SAT:Elf Power makes their way back into town to play the Caledonia tonight. With them will be Night Moves and the reunited Space Cookie, who apparently make Gordon drool.
There's also a very long celebration at Hot Corner with Elite Tha Showstoppa, Rorshak, and lots off other acts - this thing's gonna happen all afternoon/evening/night I think. There's even an after-party at the 40 Watt.
Meanwhile, there's Son 1 & The Insurgents, Ben Stevens, and other at Little Kings, DJ Mahogany back again at Flicker with Nic Goodson and Deaf Judges also playing there, Dancer Vs. Politician and the Packway Handle Band at the Georgia Theatre, and for something different that evening, you can visit the Wild Child Arts Center, which is having and opening reception for an art show called "A Study of Horses", which features works by Brenda K. McDaniel, Charleen Romine, Terri Alsobrook, Christina Sullo and Jim Bell. It lasts 7-10 PM, but why I'm posting it is because Curley Maple's gonna be playing there.
But before all that: Human Rights Fest happens once again at College Square, downtown. There's gonna be bands and info booths and people who look like they couldn't afford dogs having dogs there, and people yelling things loudly into microphones (forgetting that they're hooked to an amplification system?). There's a show billed as "Spotlight Blood Drive" tonight at the 40 Watt. Birds & Wire and Ice Cream Socialists are among the performers. I'm not sure if you can actually give blood there or if it's just to raise money for future blood drives, but either way, good cause and good music.
Also, Jay Gonzalez is back at Kingpin's in between new DBT-related duties to perform a night at the piano lounge there. This week he's doing all power-pop songs. I've been told to expect some Nick Lowe for sure. It all gets started around 9.
There's also Madeline at the Caledonia, Casper & The Cookies and Lake City at Flicker, and Sweet-Tooth Simpleton at Little Kings.
But before all that, Creston Spiers (of Harvey Milk "fame") will be performing solo at the Caledonia for an early Happy Hour show. I have absolutely no idea what he'll be performing. Cannot imagine Harvey Milk as a solo act. We'll see. UPDATE: No Lake City at Flicker. Misprint, apparently. Also, everyone says Earth (at the Caledonia tonight) is going to be awesome. Everyone=3-4 people, but that includes Sloan.
