Monday Morning Sound-Off

How was your weekend? Sucks that it's over, huh? Let's commiserate together. Tell us about it.

Labels:

Tonight In Athens

The oft-protested (okay, really like once and that was only 1/2 of them) Cars Can Be Blue will be up at the Caledonia tonight. At the same show, you can also catch Athens' newest experimental-ish act Creepy. Does experimental just mean jam-band for non-hippies? Anyway, that's kinda what it is. Instrumentals that are not hippie-ish and vary here and there between shows.

Also, rock trivia at Little Kings. 8 PM

This Weekend In Athens

It's a good weekend to live in Athens.

Friday:
There's the return of Harvey Milk, fresh off of tour, over at the 40 Watt. The great Tenement Halls will be opening. Bearfoot Hookers are playing at the Caledonia, and there's a Comic Relief benefit over at the Georgia Theatre, recognizing the 25th anniversary of Andy Kaufman's passing, with proceeds benefiting artists affected by Hurricane Katrina. Hope for Agoldensummer will be at the Melting Point tonight, and a new band, Language Arts, which has some members from an Epic At Best, are playing the Tasty World (along with a few other bands I've never heard of).

Saturday:
There's a stellar lineup at the 40 Watt with Maserati, The Buddy System, and Summerbirds in the Cellar. It's been maybe a year or so since Maserati played here, so we're definitely due.

The Blind Pig is celebrating its anniversary with a pig roast and such, along with music from some of the Dashboard Saviors, Betsy Franck and the Bareknuckle Band and others. Commerce is also having its City of Lights Festival all day, featuring music from Curley Maple and others, as well as their weekly Farmer's Market. Should be a good kid-friendly event. (Don't forget about the Farmer's Market at Bishop Park.) There's also a Solar-Powered Music Festival at the Georgia Nature Center, also with Curley Maple as well as Grogus and some other bands.

Sunday:
Vic Chesnutt and niece Liz Durrett, performing together, at the Melting Point for the Athens 441 show.

Also Tonight In Athens

Little Kings: The ever opinionated DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be playing Dub, Dub Step, and AfroBeat from 10PM on. Ask him about his impending Saxophone career.

Tonight In Athens

It's a good night for music in Athens.

There's a nice lineup at the 40 Watt tonight with Mufreesboro band Glossary, and locals Sleepy Horses, and the Holy Liars at the 40 Watt. I haven't seen the Holy Liars, but I really dig on Glossary's last album, in so far as a really solid rock album goes. (It's a free download on their website.)

Sound Houses (used to be the New Sound of Numbers), along with Roanoke band The Young Sinclairs and Sunking! over at Caledonia. There's also Mouser at the Go Bar and long-time songstress Iris Dement at the Melting Point.

The Tasty World is hosting a good lineup tonight with Pride Parade and The Dumps. As far as spinning records go, we have DJ Kurt Wood at the Rye Bar.

We've almost made it to Friday, folks. Hang in there.

More Video Fun

This is a 4-minute watch, but it's pretty amazing this guy can do this so well. Plus, cool music to go along with it.

In other news, the Drive-By Truckers were in the New York Times this week. Patterson speaks about the demise of the record industry.

Love In This Showbiz

Just a heads up that Mezzy Eclipse posted one of the greatest videos ever to hit the internets. It will bring up some wonderful childhood memories and simultaneously distort and pervert them. Enjoy.

Suzanne Yoculan Is A Great American

During AthFest, a friend hipped me to the source of the scary-looking painting (to the right there) that currently hangs in the Caledonia. It's none other than the Gymdogs' Head Coach Suzanne Yoculan. It's based on this photo. Once I knew who it was (and the title of the painting), I thought it was hilarious. I have absolutely no idea who painted it, but big ups to them.

You could say that pictures like that are a hazard of the job. Of course, it doesn't help that when you type her name into Google Images, the first two pics that come up are this one and this one. Then again, in the world of collegiate gymnastics coaching, she's pretty much tops, so I doubt she's losing any sleep over having her excited face photographed repeatedly.

Southern Shelter Records

The announcement finally happened: Southern Shelter Records is official! Sloan Simpson's new company is releasing a 7" of two solo tunes by Creston Spiers (Harvey Milk, A). Details here (duh) along with a recent set by Creston. This rocks. Now everyone's gonna start bugging Sloan to record their band and then release it!

Reader Poll

Just out of curiosity, if you had a friend who made up some hilarious but insulting jokes about the local scene and questioned whether or not to introduce them into cyberspace, what would your advice be? And please, I beg you to think "knee-jerk reaction" here and not "well-thought out"...

Tonight In Athens

The Wydelles will be opening the Scott Miller show - the first act of the three-part Sunflower Music Series at the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia. Assuming the weather cooperates, these are always great concerts to bring some food and chill out outside. Very relaxed and enjoyable and there's lots of old folks cause they can bring wine and cheese and leave at a decent hour (yeah, actually that doesn't sound so bad). Speaking of, show's at 7.

DP's update: Here's an article about Scott Miller, and let it be known that your ticket price includes free wine, draft beer, snacks and sodas.

Definitely Not My Last 'Fest

What a week. I say week, because mine started with a kickass show on Tuesday in Atlanta at the EARL with Harvey Milk and Pride Parade. I was in town for a class, so it just worked out that I could attend the show. This seemed like it deserved a mention. Another fantastic show worth mentioning that wasn't officially a part of the festival was the triple bill at the Caledonia on Thursday night. This was Supernaut, Powerload*, and Pastor of Muppets. The bands killed it, and the energy in the room was palpable. It seemed like everyone in the place was filled with excitement for the weekend, even if some of us still had to work the next day. (Note to self: rocking out to AC/DC songs on the night before a very busy work day- not a good idea.)

After having an excruciatingly stressful day of work on Friday, I was ready to vent with rock, alcohol, great conversations, and a long-awaited 3 day weekend. My night started out with David Barbe and 1/2 the Quick Hooks (Frank McDonall and Jon Mills) at the side stage for a nice set, with some new songs to boot (they have been recording another album). Too bad the side stage had some sound issues, as this was the first band over there. Next up was Producto at the Caledonia. A good set, as usual, though I did miss having the rest of the band up there. That was my first show with just Ane' and Frank, and I must ask: this was one of Athens' best bands...where did everyone go?

Now, at this point, my long work day started catching up with me, and any intentions I had to visit anywhere else fell by the wayside. I then spent the rest of the night at the Caledonia, which was fine because it included bands I was very excited to see. The Arcs were great, Hayride blew it up - as usual, and I also got to hear some of The Golden Gates and Banana Hammock for the first time. Not to mention, it's always amusing to sit out on the patio and watch the drunken stumblers roll in, in a mad dash for another drink with cold ice and more alcohol. It's worth mentioning, for those unable to make it this year, the weather at this year's AthFest was milder than years past, thank god, and the big rain didn't really set in until last night just as the main stage was being taken down. The crowds weren't nearly as bad as last year when it came to the Club Crawl. (Course, I didn't stray very far this year, I must admit).

I made myself start late on Saturday, for the sake of pacing, and this proved to be another great night of music. I was impressed with Abandon the Earth Mission, in so far as chill, atmospheric music goes. Mother Jackson followed with their solid rock set, and then Centro-Matic*, one of my favorite bands, was next. I hadn't picked up the new cd yet, so I didn't know the new songs at all. They definitely were in more of a pop/rock vein than usual, I'd say, and Scott Danbom played less fiddle and piano for those songs. (He's always my favorite to watch with them. So talented.) That set was fantastic, and then one of my favorite local bands was next, A. Armada. Seemed like the songs played for this set brought about their heavier side, which was a good move for a crowded 40 Watt club. They are always consistently good, if you ask me. Next up was Pride Parade*, my 2nd time seeing them for the week. They blew it up, in the short time they had. Just as A. Armada did, both bands build intensity as the set progresses. And, in their case, killer guitar chops that remind you of another great reason about living in Athens: most of your friends play in bands you love, endearing themselves to you in their own unique ways. Songwriting, guitar playing, drumming, whatever it is they do. There is so much gosh darn talent in this town, it blows my mind. (Does AthFest make you feel an overwhelming love for your town, like it does me?)

At this point, I would have liked to walk up the hill to the Georgia Theatre, especially after I heard about the "Big Ass Fan," and also to see Bloodkin and GOAT, but my legs wouldn't let me do that, so I stayed at the Caledonia for an always-fun Lona set. An Eminence Front (The Who) cover closed out my night with a bang.

Well, I have the day off and loathe sitting at the computer on such days, so I will just sum up Sunday by saying that, despite my best intentions to stay home, I wound up at some more of AthFest to see friends, then later at Kingpin's for bowling and Strikeforce! (or however you write that). Their cover of JJ Cale's "They Call Me the Breeze" was enough to get me back on track for the night, and after one round of kicking my friends' butts at bowling,** it was time to make my way over to the Squirrel for Pride Parade. Before that though, I had to listen to a few bands that didn't do much for me, though the wait proved acceptable once Pride Parade took the stage and absolutely threw it down one last time for the week.

Just when I thought I could have the week off, I made the mistake of checking the Flagpole remembering that some more favorites are playing this week. Good lord, sometimes I think you Athens musicians would just lay off the whole "music" thing every once in awhile so I could have some time off. Get a real job:-) I swear, I need to take up knitting or golf or something instead.*** Hats off to everyone involved with every aspect of the weekend. I will gladly give $15 to make more memories like that.

*My absolute favorite sets of the weekend.
**A total lie.
***No way in hell.

My Last 'Fest

This year was really (probably) my last AthFest (maybe) ever... but without sentiment, here's what I did:

FRI: Holding fast to a personal pledge to schedule AthFest around me and not the other way around for once, I didn't end up downtown until very near 9 on Friday - missing a slew of undoubtedly good acts I'm sure, but that's the way it goes. However, passing by the second stage on the way to the main stage, I overheard about a song's worth of Kebert Xela's set. Cool sort of electronic stuff that comes off way more club-friendly than their myspace page would have you believe. Made me regret not having followed up on their invites these past coupla' years. Anyway, props to them.

Legal Bitch and I met up for Dark Meat's set right as it started. Listened to a few songs (including the family-friendly "Well Hug You Then"), and although the crowd was definitely into it, we decided it was a lot to take in early in the evening and sober (whereas they're always the perfect end-of-night set) so we headed towards the Caledonia.

Before even entering the Caledonia, I was informed that Producto was now a 2-piece. Accordingly, the loud outbursts in their songs had been minimized and it was a relatively sedate set. But for this time of the night it was perfect, so we both stayed till the end of the show. We also stayed for the Golden Gates set (which is really just Savoir Faire 2.0 it seems). The music is about the same - standard but highly enjoyable 90's "college rock" kinda stuff. Ended with a killer cover of the Glands' "Straight Down" (Ross was around, but not sure if he was watching then). Their photo is 2 paragraphs below because I didn't have a picture of those bands.

From there, we hiked up to the Georgia Theatre to get a spot for Contraband (which turned out to be Ninja Gaiden Band instead). Caught the end of the Folklore set where they were playing Kinks covers. Turned out really good. I actually thought they had the stereo on and were between bands when we walked in - so it was pretty together, especially for a band playing in the corner of the club (hence, no pic). Anyway, Ninja Gaiden Band performed well, but seemed to have a few technical troubles here and there and I've seen the act lots of times, so it didn't seem to hold its appeal at this point. Fun enough though. Passed Tony Clifton on the way out. Shoulda got a picture, but his beer-promo-looking girls kinda weirded me out with their oversized stickers they were forcing on people.

From here, I'm not sure the order of events, but I overheard a bit of Red Legs' set from Farm 255 when I was outside the Caledonia. It sounded like competently played 50's rock blended with something more modern. The description says something about the Kinks and Olivia Tremor Control, but I'd be more inclined to throw Buddy Holly in there somewhere. Anyway, I dug it and I can't believe I hadn't heard 'em before. Hit the 40 Watt for Iron Hero, who have reduced their numbers to 4 (I'm sure this is old news, but I haven't seen 'em in a while), while ramping the sound up to more straight-ahead rock (less dance-ish beats). They're good, no doubt, but I kinda miss the extra drums. Caught part of Hayride at the Caledonia too. Hayride is like Athens' mathematical constant.

Finally, The Arcs closed out the night for me. They proved once again why they are Athens' greatest band. Even after a few drinks, they were able to play with absolute precision and turn out catchy, hook-driven rock n' roll that stuck in my head the whole next day. They are amazing and were the highlight of AthFest for me. They should also hire Jeff Griggs as a professional heckler. If they hit the road, that would be needed. Anyway, that picture doesn't show the rock, but it was there in spades. Don't miss their future shows.

SAT: I've done my time in the Saturday outdoor heat. This year, I took it easy during the day and Legal Bitch and I made a firm decision that our first show of the night would be to see Night Moves (Gold) at the Caledonia. I would say this was the best "surprise" of the 'Fest. They were spot-on the entire set. I've seen them play a while back, but they really nailed it and despite what you "music is good no matter what time of day it is" people say, getting the crowd going at 8 PM when it's still light and everyone's sober is no easy feat. They pulled it off.

After a short booze break, I headed for Tasty World to see my friend's band, Thunderchief, play. You know when you go to a house party with hardcore bands playing all night? This is one of those bands. Raw. After a few songs, they paused to work out some guitar issues and I headed back to the Caledonia to catch the end of Colossus. It's like a bunch of late-20's music nerds tried hard to cross Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and absolutely nailed it. The crowed seemed to agree. Guitar tricks/faces, high-pitch (and on key!) vocals, riffs, the whole 9 yards.

Split time between A Armada and The Dumps in the next slot, both of which played great in their particular genres (the soft to loud builds with lots of precision for the former and the hardcore rock of the latter), but at the near-peak performance compared to past shows I've seen. Both held their crowds well. A Armada in particular seemed to draw louder-than-usual applause from the 40 Watt crowd.

Again decided to split the 12 o'clock hour. Caught the first part of Pride Parade's set at the Caledonia. Apart from the kick-ass music, I really like watching Pride Parade play. I mean, sure, they all look like models, but my point is that they absolutely control a massive wall of sound. I don't know how to say it better than that (not having honed my journalistic skills the least bit in the past 4-5 years), but they ramp a song up to near chaos then bring it back down in an instant and all seem to be totally immersed in it. I dunno, none of that helps anyone who hasn't seen them appreciate the show any better, but it's impressive.

We Versus The Shark, meanwhile, pretty much reserves the midnight Saturday slot at the 40 Watt. This was Sam's last show with the band. They've taken what seems to be a louder, more hardcore (I gotta find a new word) turn on the new record (is it just me, or is the "scene" getting angrier?). Not as dance-y, not at math-y, not as varied. The crowd seemed divided into people who were really into it (up front) and people who weren't (in back). I liked it, but WVTS songs usually take a few listens to digest, so I bought a copy of the record and headed out.

Caught the first part of Lona's set back at the Caledonia. They're a 4 piece and this was Clay's second set of the night (having opened for Billy Joe Shaver at Athens Arena hours earlier). You pretty much know what you'll get with Lona (really, the set hasn't varied much in the last 4 years). Clay has one of the best voices in town and writes great songs. If the guy would only write some new ones now and then, he could prove that to larger crowds.

Tired, I walked outside to sit and catch up with new and old friends. Good to see y'all out.

As always, watch Southern Shelter, Deadly Designs, and the revamped AMdC for much more and better coverage. And despite the fact that we didn't get passes this year (Boo! ... Actually, it was totally our fault for not having requested them in the first place), thanks very much to Jeff and everyone at AthFest for the wonderful event they put on yearly that brings bands to the top of their game and crowds in record numbers. It's a spirit unmatched most other times of they year and I've enjoyed the hell out of it for nearly a decade of my life. Thanks, y'all!

Volunteer for Athfest

I bumped into Mr. Athfest, Jared Bailey last night. They still need volunteers for Athfest. Here's an email from volunteer coordinator Sandii Brimble:

AthFest Festival, which is being held this weekend in downtown Athens, still needs people to give a few hours of their time to help out. We need help selling merchandise and drinks on Saturday and Sunday, selling wristbands at venues Friday and Saturday nights, or for those good with children we still need some folks to help out in the KidsFest area Saturday afternoon and Sunday mornings and afternoons. People can sign up for 3 hours, 6 hours, or the whole day or weekend. For more details please email us at volunteering@athfest.com or call Peter Norris on 706 206 3466. AthFest is run almost entirely by volunteers so we can't put on this festival without you folk!

Thanks a bunch!!!
Sandii

If you can spare a few hours this weekend, please sign up.

Tonight in Athens (Tuesday)

Surprisingly, there's quite a bit going on tonight. I figured it would be dead, with Athfest just around the corner and all (more on that later). I was planning on totally abusing my powers as Guest Blogger and make up a bunch of stuff. Oh well, maybe next time.

A. Armada plays at the Caledonia, Cars Can Be Blue play a free show at The Rye Bar, Tasty World has a three-band lineup featuring local Mass Solo Revolt and bands from Chicago and Seattle. AND self-described "Cosmic cowboy" Bob Livingston plays an early (8:30) show at the Flicker.

So there.

This Weekend In Athens

Nephews throw off weekend schedules...

FRI: Ham 1 plays a hometown show at Flicker tonight before heading Europe's way with Vic Chesnutt. With them will be Liz Durrett, who's been an infrequent local performer as of late (old habits die hard), but has a new album due out this fall on the newly-revitalized WARM recordings, so hopefully she'll be playing out more.

Also, Bo Bedingfield will be playing a solo show at Farm 255. For those on the porch of the Max Canada, this will be a refreshing change from the usual stuff you have to talk over. Fo' sho'.

There's also Music Hates You at the 40 Watt or Thunderchief at Little Kings if you wanna get your loud on. Or the apparently controversial (on this site anyway) Stereo Campbell at Go Bar for softer tastes. DJ Twin Powers will also be spinning there.

SAT:
The first sign of AthFest approaching is almost always the Sprockets Music Video Showcase at the 40 Watt. Only, this year it's been moved from mid-week to the weekend before, which I'm sure takes some of the stress off the organizers in having to prep everything for the F'pole awards the next night. The ad says $4 with AthFest wristband, but if you're attaching that thing a full week in advance, you're braver than I.

Also, former Athenian Maria Taylor returns to the Caledonia. She's on a late leg of a tour supporting her sophomore solo album Lynn Teeter Flower. I still have my fingers crossed for a Little Red Rocket reunion show someday, but every year it seems less and less likely. Oh well.

Finally, there's Son 1 & The Insurgents at the Georgia Theatre.

Tonight In Athens

Sorry I disappeared again, y'all, but I'm an uncle now, so that's cool...

The 40 Watt tonight hosts "Face/Off #3", which features "random collaborations" featuring members of Cinemechanica, Dead Confederate, Casper & the Cookies, Elf Power, Twin Tigers, The Dumps, Dark Meat, Ginger Envelope, We Vs. the Shark, and more. Who knows how it'll turn out. But it's free, so why not find out.

There's also Elite Tha Showstoppa among many others at Tasty World and DJ Kurtwood at the Rye Bar.

Tonight In Athens

There's Twin Tigers and others are at the 40 Watt, and something different over at the Caledonia tonight. First, it's Memory Gospel Dancers, which is apparently a project of the We Versus the Shark folks. They will be joined by DJ Immuzikation and Extra Golden, a group combining Kenyan and American musicians. Here's what the Flagpole says about Extra Golden:
The benga style developed in Nairobi in the 1940s and ‘50s, and although it’s heavy on indigenous rhythms and melodies, it also borrows heavily from American styles, particularly from Cuban jazz, and other folk songs.

Odds and Ends

Lars let us know about this great NPR piece on Vic Chesnutt, as well as this interview with We Versus The Shark.

Brandon R. countered my Showcase Showdown video from yesterday with this even better Price Is Right contestant. Hilarious.

Tonight In Athens

Tonight sees Fairmount Fair play a free show at the Flicker. I really dig this flyer for the show. Here's what Ian says about the other bands playing:
We're playing with Animal Electric (solo girl with autoharp who moved to ATH recently) and Juviley, an Israeli dude who will be playing on WUGA at 4.
Here's some more info I found on Juviley from our fellow Athens bloggers.

Allison Weiss
and some other bands will be over at the Tasty World. There's also some sort of Adam Ant video collection viewing over at Jittery Joe's (eastside). Which basically gives me a chance to post this big WTF? video with Grace Jones and Adam Ant.

The Best of Youtube

I came across this site today, and found some gems.

Office worker goes insane. This takes the printer scene from Office Space to a whole new level.

Wow. 12 strikes in 12 lanes.

O.k. first of all, seriously? And secondly, is her name for real?

For the Computer Nerds

And speaking of nerds, I was telling some of you this weekend about this cool plug-in you can add to your browsers for picture viewing. Check it out, it's pretty neat stuff.

This Weekend In Athens

We Vs. The Weekend...

FRI: We Versus The Shark (the band with the longest website update in history) keeps good on their promise to release a new LP this Spring (it's still Spring, right?). The new album's called Dirty Versions and technically isn't out yet, but you can pre-order from Hello Sir Records, and they'll go ahead and send it. Or, I'm pretty sure you can probably buy it tonight at the Caledonia for the CD release. This band rocks and has since its inception. They're one of those bands that have stayed interesting for years and they're one of the few bands that I never skip when their stuff comes up on my iPod, which is saying something. Very much looking forward to this new CD. Sorry to gush. Go see 'em. Oh, and since it's a new month, there's a new track for free from their ongoing covers album.

Difficult to transition from that, but Folklore'll be at the Go Bar too. And our friend DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be spinning at Little Kings starting around 10 PM. It's a dub night with Afrobeats, Reggae, Dancehall, etc.

SAT: The lineup at the Caledonia on Saturday features the new and the experimental with Don Chambers, Killick, and Craig Lieske on the bill. It also features a new band called Brave Young Citizen that has folks from Empire State as well as Jesse Flavin who once played 200 gigs in a week here.

Also, recently revitatlized rock n' rollers The Help will be at Tasty World. More pop, less Southern-rocky F'pole reports.

And you can shake ass to Bitch Switch at Little Kings starting around 11 PM if you wanna dance.

Live Music Online

We introduced Southern Shelter here a few years ago, and many of you jumped on board and became aware of Sloan's great resource to find local live music online. In a conversation with a friend last night, I realized he didn't know about a whole wealth of live music that's kept as part of the Live Music Archive Project on archive.org. We've mentioned it here before, but figured it can't hurt to mention again.
etree.org is a community committed to providing the highest quality live concerts in a lossless, downloadable format. The Internet Archive has teamed up with etree.org to preserve and archive as many live concerts as possible for current and future generations to enjoy. All music in this Collection is from trade-friendly artists and is strictly noncommercial, both for access here and for any further distribution. Artists' commercial releases are off-limits. This collection is maintained by the etree.org community. (Live Music Archive)
The artists themselves, or some representative of, have to give permission to the site for their live shows to be archived on there, so it's all legit. There are several Athens bands on there already, but it wouldn't hurt to have more. You can approve what shows you do or don't want on the site, and you can listen in all types of formats. Stream mp3, if available, download flacs, etc. There is quite a bit of crap on there, if you ask me, but there's also tons and tons of gems there too. It's a great resource whether you're bored at work, or want to find new music for a road trip. The quality of the sound on these shows can vary, but there are many folks who upload their shows who use pristine taping rigs making the sound quality all the more clear. It's definitely worth looking at if you don't already know about it. Happy listening!

Tonight In Athens

Little Kings is hosting 3 bands tonight: Quiet Hooves, Casper and the Cookies, and The Carrots out of Austin, TX. Other than that, I'm not familiar with any of the bands playing around town, so you're on your own tonight. Happy hump day!

Release Day

Today is the release day for the new Harvey Milk album, Life...The Best Game In Town. I haven't heard it yet, but I've heard that it's awesome. (I'd post the album artwork, but it seems we're having technical difficulties yet again.) Nonetheless, go get you some. You can hear a song sample on the Harvey Milk site.

The band will be playing the 40 Watt on June 27th with Atlanta band Tenement Halls. Harvey Milk will also be playing The Earl in Atlanta on June 17th with Pride Parade. You can get tickets for both over at Chunklet.

Update: You can stream the album here until you get to a record store.

Tonight In Athens

There's Spring Tigers and Imaginary Johnny at the Caledonia, metal at the Tasty World, pop and rock at Flicker, and bluegrass at the Melting Point. That's about it, folks.

Monday Morning Sound Off

Happy June everyone. Tell us what the haps were this weekend.

Tonight in Athens

Ben Bailey, the guy from Cash Cab, will be performing a stand-up comedy routine tonight at the (newly painted) Georgia Theatre. The Packway Handle Band will be playing at the Ashford Manor tonight, and I do believe those shows are outside. Some of the folks from The Ones will be performing with a different project called Hola Halo tonight at the Flicker, and there's a couple of bands I don't know over at the Caledonia. Maybe our readers have some input on them.
