If you were stuck on a desert island for 5 years, and you could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?

Tonight in Athens

I'm not familiar with any bands playing tonight. Anyone have a suggestion of something they'd recommend? If I didn't have to work today, I'd definitely be all over the Pirate School they have at the library.
Learn to speak like a pirate with Capt. Abdul and First Mate Jackie Elsner. Arrrrgh.
How cool is that?

Update from Lucas:

"Hey! Tonight is the beginning of Team Clermont Summer Camp at the Caledonia. The amazing Megafaun (the guys who used to be in DeYarmond Edison with Bon Iver) are playing first, the eclectic songwriter Benji Hughes, an anthemic Arizona band called Mostly Bears, and the out-of-control D-Plan-esque Athens faves So Many Dynamos.

Everything starts at 10 and the bands are all great! Come early for Megafaun...I swear to you that you are not going to be disappointed. These guys are amazing. Hit me up at lucas@teamclermont.com for more information!"

Tonight in Athens

Creepy is at the Caledonia tonight. I've heard good things about this act so I'm curious to check them out. Justin Evans and Thayer Sarrano (Sweet Tooth Simpleton) are at the Flicker, and there's the weekly Wednesday night dance party over at the Go Bar.

Also, the Lee Boys are at the Georgia Theatre.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Well, we had an absolute blast at the TDJ party on Saturday. Big thanks to Kaya and the Caledonia staff, and to the awesome acts: The Arcs, Pride Parade, and DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms. And thanks to all of you for coming out. Will, we sure will miss you, but we're glad we got you drunk one last time before you moved!

Alas, it's back to the grind. How was everyone's weekend?

This Weekend in Athens

Happy weekend, TDJers! It's 'bout darn time, right?

Friday:

Diego Catalan and Jacob Morris will be performing around the corner at Flicker. Tonight, Diego Catalan's band is made up of lots of local musicians, and there will be a set at both 8 and 10:30 I believe. The music is Ghanaian-inspired and there will be some good food at the early show.

Kebert Xela is among a few bands at the Caledonia tonight. Just up the way at Little Kings, there's a big night of music with Deaf Judges, Christopher Without His Liver, Chip McKenzie (Still Small Voices), and Y/our Sparkle Heart.

Jackpot City is down the street at the Melting Point, and Alabama band Sons of Roswell are over at the Tasty World. After all that, or instead of all that, whatever you prefer, you can check out DJ Baby Pandas at the Go Bar.

Saturday:

The Day Jobs LogoThere's The Day Jobs (that's us!) party over at the Caledonia. This is our big send-off to TDJ co-founder Mail Clerk so we hope you will join us. There will be rousing performances by Pride Parade, The Arcs, and DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms. Mail Clerk may get naked, who knows. Following the party, the regular time slot at the Caledonia will be filled with the Dirty South Reggae Dance Hall. Sounds fun.

A rare appearance by Jonathan Byrd will be at the Healing Arts Center tonight, and around the corner at Farm 255 is Hope for Agoldensummer and Hola Halo. There's Lona, Kaitlin Jones and the County Fair, and Justin Evans over at the 40 Watt. There's something called Blue Screen Love Scene at Flicker, which apparently involves members from lots of local bands, which will be followed by DJ Mahogany at midnight. Kite to the Moon is at the Georgia Theatre, the Normaltown Flyers at Allen's, and following all that, you can hit up the late night disco at the Go Bar if you so desire. There's something for everyone this weekend.

Don't stay out too late on Friday though, as there is the 40 Watt Thrift Extravaganza early on Saturday morning. Here's the details:
  • When: Sat, July 26th 10am-2pm
  • Where: Inside the 40 Watt & the 40 Watt parking lot
  • Food and drinks will be available
  • Items will include sound gear, clothes, furniture, bicycles, records, jewelry, local art and more
  • $1 donation will go to Nuci's Space
While you're picking up stuff you may or may not need over at the 40 Watt, you might as well as buy some local produce for dinner at the Athens Farmer's Market at the same time. If you find yourself bored this weekend, regardless of all this, you are just plain lazy. (But, hey, that's one of the major tenets this board was founded on so...we won't hold it against ya.)

Sunday:

STRIKEFORCE! will be performing their (almost) weekly show at Kingpins.

...and you might not get fired. Hopefully some of these co-worker computer pranks will speed up your day without causing an out and out war in your office. Post hilarious real life results (or other funny/cruel pranks) in the comments!

Tonight in Athens

Caledonia: Check out Mark Brut's band Loose Cannon with local band Splinter Belly and Knoxville act Garage Deluxe.

Flicker: Definitely check out Standard 8. These guys act as if Marlena Dietrich torch songs, show tunes, and 1950s car crash rock and roll songs work well together, and they do when T.T. Mahoney and Standard 8 do it. Playing with their friends Hola Halo.

Raleigh, NC band American Aquarium will be playing at the Tasty World tonight. Juffrage and Kilroy are also on the bill.

If you're not into that, there's always the Wednesday night Dance Party at the Go Bar. The DJs are from local band Spring Tigers.

We're Throwing a Party and Everyone is Invited

Emo KidDon't forget...this Saturday night at the Caledonia, we will be saying goodbye to TDJ's Mail Clerk as he tries to make it in the "real world." We sure will miss you, Will!

Doors will open at 5 and there will be music by The Arcs, Pride Parade, and DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms. There may be some random grub there as well.

Tonight in Athens

No, the Kinks aren't coming to Athens, but Folklore will be covering The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society at the 40 Watt tonight. During AthFest, I heard from several folks that this particular set of covers was great, so I definitely recommend folks go check that out. Also on the bill are the Future Ape Tapes and Ham 1. Should be a fun night.

There's also Kenosha Kid at Farm 255, and there's a ton of other bands at many of the venues in town...Caledonia, Tasty World, Little Kings, and Flicker, but I'm not familiar with any of them honestly. Maybe some of you can chime in with some recommendations.

Also, a big Happy Birthday from TDJ to Cat today!

Local Music Review

There's a very positive review of Harvey Milk's new album in Pitchfork this week.
"Life...The Best Game in Town, the best executed Harvey Milk album to date, and one of the most accomplished metal records you'll hear this year."
Update: There is also an interview with Andrew Rieger from Elf Power from the Pitchfork Music Festival here. Props to local bands Ginger Envelope and Nana Grizol are given.

Tonight in Athens

Once again, Athens doesn't rest just because it's a Monday. There's Sleepy Horses at the Caledonia, Lazer/Wülf at the Tasty World, and Dan Nettles (Kenosha Kid) at Farm 255. (I went to his show there last week and it was excellent.)

If you are up for games, there's music trivia at Little Kings and Let's Make a Deal at the Georgia Theatre.

Happy birthday to Mama's Boy. They are celebrating their 2 year anniversary tonight with an hors d'oeuvres buffet, live music and a cash bar. (I ate their food this weekend and the mashed potatoes were heavenly.)

On another food note, don't forget it's P.L.A.C.E. week, which is a "week that encourages people to buy, eat, and live locally while at the same time creating truly distinctive culinary experiences in Athens with locally-grown food." There's 12 participating restaurants and lots of fundraisers. It's definitely a cause worth supporting.

Tonight in Athens

TDJer DJ Other Voices Other Rooms will be spinning some tunes over at Little Kings tonight. I'm sure OVOR will post the details and what he plans to spin in the comments section. DJ Kurt Wood is at the Rye Bar tonight.

That's really all I have for ya. There's something called Ghost Train out of Macon at the Caledonia tonight. This is their description:
"Improv/drone/psych from the new, weird Macon," says this four-piece band. "Expect lots of guitar squall, tribal drumming and old-time ditties about Quetzalcoatl and the end of days."
One more day to the weekend, folks. You can do it!

Tonight In Athens

Double Dynamite and Everybody Everybody, with others, over at the Go Bar. These bands have members from Cars Can Be Blue, Titans of Filth, and Christopher's Liver. (There's a band called Meth Teeth there...haha).

Of course, if you're not up for music, but want to show off your music knowledge, there's rock and roll trivia at Little Kings at 8 p.m. and the game show Let's Make A Deal is at the Georgia Theatre (every Monday in July). It's only a dollar and my friend won some gift certificates to local businesses there last week. Something different to do, at the very least.

In other news, congratulations to Widespread Panic, who will be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 20. Pitchfork has Chapter 1 of Athens, GA. Inside/Out for viewing on their website. They also have Of Montreal on there from their appearance at the 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival. Something to do if you are bored at work. And in other exciting news, it appears Kenny Rogers is coming back to Athens full-time.

My Last Post

Dear Y'all,

In trying to wrap things up, I got all nostalgic and went back to re-read my first post - the first post on TDJ ever:
Saturday, April 10, 2004
- posted by Mail Clerk @ 12:24 PM

WHO ARE WE?:
The folks who post here are mostly musicians and/or artists from Athens, GA who have day jobs and are often bored at them. Whatever subculture that creates, we write about it. From time to time, we'll have guest contributers who aren't afraid to be known by their real names (unlike the blatant cowards to run this thing), but mostly this'll hopefully just be a great place to kill some time, find links to other cool places to kill more time when you should be working, and read about things Athens.

So, welcome.
First thought: Why the hell did I start posting on a blog about wasting time at work while I was at home on a Saturday (and up early it looks like!)? Second thought: "...the blatant cowards to run this thing..." - A typo on post one. Some things never change. Third thought: I guess I stayed pretty true to that goal. Ran out of office culture to mock after a while, but the Athens thing kept on.

Time to spill the beans... Here's my contribution in a nutshell: returned to Athens from L.A. to make a documentary about Athens music (which I still haven't finished - grad school is what it is). Took a job at the UGA Office of Undergrad Admissions. Got really bored. Knew Computer Support who wanted to get in on this whole blogging thing. We decided to blog about the few things we had inside knowledge about: hating our jobs and loving Athens music/culture. So this was our blog.

Early on, a robot with Tourette's invaded the system. A few bloggers came and went over the years as Computer Support, Legal Bitch, Desktop Publisher and I remained pretty constant (cheers to anyone who remembers when No Job posted here). Sloan Simpson rose to prominence in Athens culture and we helped bug him till he started the awesomest blog ever. We had series such as "Time-Wasting Tips" and "Tales From The Real O.C." and of course "Tonight In Athens". We bugged Flagpole a lot, but in good spirits. The Heckler came to hang out. Pylon came back and it was awesome. We scooped that story and got a link from Pitchfork and probably like the most hits ever. At other times, mentioned by some great, well-respected music blogs and even the guy who was running Spin Magazine a few years back, which was odd. Had a significant negative effect on Google image search for local bands. Robo made fun of Overflo. Head made fun of Robo. I went back to grad school and stopped going out as much (the latter necessary but not necessarily great). CS left to go be a hippie and then returned to his hipster roots. Mike White brought us great photos. LB quietly stopped posting and then went to make jewelry. We continued to post EVERY workday (with very few exceptions). Great bands went, great new bands started. And Athens rolls on.

Sorry if all that seems self-important - I'm cashing in on 4 years and 3 months worth of nostalgia (and it's how I spent my late 20's). But the people taking over are fantastic. Desktop Publisher y'all know. She'll be running things here. Lazy Student and Library Troll have already done great work and I'm sure we'll read a lot more from them soon. I'll still be reading TDJ daily and probably jumping in the fray with the commenters.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for reading all the crap I've been writing. We get about 300 separate people who read this site every workday - which I never would have imagined starting out. That's a lot of wasted work time and it feels great, doesn't it? Thanks also to the musicians... I've already thrown all the praise I can, but you know you make this town go 'round. Thanks to CS for starting this site and giving me something to do for these last few years and to all the TDJ bloggers for keeping me reading this site instead of just writing it - mostly, they all wrote better stuff than me. Thanks to my fiance (Vet Pharmacist) for weird news contributions, occasional hilarious comments, and general support or at least tolerance of being ignored in favor of a computer nightly (literally since we met). Lastly, thanks to my fellow bloggers (esp. Gardner who inspired us to start a blog and Hillary who supported us in the beginning), AMdC, AMdN, AthFest folks - you made us feel like real journalists!, club/bar owners (What's up Kaya?), students, real journalists (any of you out there?), commenters (keep 'em coming!), friends not otherwise covered, etc.

So now I'm old and leaving Athens to "work", and I have some awesome memories. Thanks y'all!

Rock On,
-Will
(Sorry if you thought I was someone cooler.)

PS See y'all on the 26th at the Caledonia. 5 PM. Be there or be square, Athens.

This Weekend In Athens

Ah Athens...

FRI: Dark Meat's back in town and playing what I think is their first club show since returning at the 40 Watt. With them is celebrity DJ/producer/re-mixer Diplo. If you ever read "Song Title" (Diplo remix), that's him.

Also, Rob and Andrew return to Farm 255 this time with the full Dromedary Quartet.

There's also Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band at the Rye Bar and/or Macon's Hank Vegas at Tasty World for your Americana fix.

Finally, shakin' ass with Bitch Switch at Little Kings isn't a bad idea either.

SAT: Rome's highly-praised (at least locally) Little Country Giants will be back in town at Flicker. I'll tell ya', every once in a while, those outlying cities (Macon, Rome, Atlanta...) will produce a decent band. Rare, but it happens. This is an excellent example.

There's also Deaf Judges at the 40 Watt or A Armada at the Caledonia. Or our pal DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms will be spinning "Summer in the City" tracks including some from Martha & the Vandellas, Sharon Jones, Lovin' Spoonful, Blue Cheer, Pavement, etc. over at Little Kings.

But before all that, Athens' branch of Dance Dance Party Party happens again at Floorspace at 3 PM. Their description: "Judgement-free zone for ladies to dance. Leave high heels at home and wear your workout clothes. 'No boys, no booze, leg warmers optional.'" So, there you go ladies.

SUN: Kingpins is throwing a "Birthday Bash for Cancers (the astrological sign)". It's at 6 PM and free. You can see Patrick Carey, Don Chambers, Mother Jackson, and Still, Small Voice & The Joyful Noise.

Later, DJ Kurtwood at the Squirrel (10-ish). I'm not hip on most of the bands there this weekend, but there's stuff every night. Happy Birthday Mercer.

The Website Is Down

I know many of you folks with day jobs will get a kick out of this website. Hilarious.

A TDJ EVENT!!!

So, that big announcement I mentioned earlier in the week...

As most of you well know, this is my last week blogging here at TDJ - second to last day in fact (I'm a nomad in Athens for 2 weeks thereafter). You can save all your tissues and tearful posts for tomorrow cause today I have some kickass news: the Caledonia is throwing the First (Annual?) TDJ Party, and you're all invited.

What's in it for you?
The Arcs
Pride Parade
DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms before, in between, and after both sets
It's on Saturday the 26th from 5-9 PM - mark your calendars!
Cost: TBA (I forgot to ask - cheap, I'm sure.)
Maybe food. (Anyone wanna cook? Robo - I'm looking your way.)

It's been a great 4+ years and it's time to celebrate me finally getting out of the way so more qualified people can write about Athens here. If you read this site, please come say hey, even if you don't know me. Someone there will know who I am, and it will give me a sense of worth. Just let me rock out during the music, that's all I ask.

Thanks very much to Kevin Lane who used his super-powers to help organize this whole thing and to Kaya who did much of the same and to all the performers who agreed to play on short-ish notice. This show is gonna rule. Hope all y'all can make it.

Tonight In Athens

Lona seems to be returning to a fairly regular performance schedule now following the re-release of To The Nth. There's still rumors of another album, but those persist for a lot of bands. We'll see. Anyway, they're surrounded by Americana at the Caledonia tonight.

Another rarity... Dromedary is at Farm 255. Not with anyone else. Just Rob & Andrew as a duo. Man, it's like 2003 all over again tonight.

There's also Son 1 & The Insurgents at Tasty World and DJ Kurt Wood at the Rye Bar.

Tonight In Athens

Elf Power takes the stage at the Caledonia for Jimmy Hughes' going away party. This means of course that Jimmy won't be playing in Elf Power after tonight and we've already mentioned the end (for now) of Folklore ... but will Ian continue on as a one-man Fairmount Fair? Only time (or he) will tell. Anyway, tonight you get to reap the benefits of his departure cause the show is free and early (7 PM). Rock.

UPDATE: Why does it always happen that me and DP figure something out at exactly the same time? (10:34 AM - seriously?) Anyway, one Elf Power post to rule them all! Ha!

Camp Amped

Camp Amped LogoJust wanted to point out that today is the beginning of Camp Amped over at Nuci's Space. It's programs like this that help to make Nuci's Space a great resource to have in our town. If you want to help support Nuci's, but don't have the money to donate, consider volunteering your time. Every little bit counts.
Camp Amped is a two week long summer day camp for youth ages 11-17 at Nuçi's Space in Athens, GA. Students are taught and mentored by some of the most amazing people in Athens, GA who just happen to be some of the city's most talented and accomplished musicians. This year's instructors include Carl Lindberg, Dan Nettles, Claire Campbell, Ben Mize and Joel Byron. While at Camp Amped, participants form bands and have the opportunity to write, learn, and record new music. At the end of the two week long camp, students perform in their own rock show at the Grand Finale, which will take place at 7:00 pm on July 19, 2008 at Nuçi's Space. If you would like more information, please contact Laura Ford at laura@nuci.org or visit www.nuci.org.

Onion's Guide To Pretending To Care About The Election

Pretty funny not only in its guide to non-comments, but also in its perfect morning show mock-up. Also, while the story isn't as funny, the main headline this week is great... "Bush Tours America To Survey Damage Caused By His Disastrous Presidency." (Which reminds me of my favorite Wonkette comment of the last couple of weeks: "Why do muskrats hate America?")

TDJ Exclusive: Uga VII Chosen?

Yesterday, Mezzy Eclipse posted what is rumored to be the first picture of Uga VII, the University of Georgia's newest mascot (obviously on vacation before the fall season). Today, we've got the confirmatory pic! (Click it to enlarge.)

As is UGA tradition, the athletic association's "special council" convened over the weekend for an emergency meeting at the Butts-Mehre building. The meeting does not adjourn until a new Uga is chosen. Early Wednesday morning, red and black smoke began to emanate from the building's main chimney, signaling that a new Uga had been selected. Though the choice will likely not officially be made public until near the fall football season (some suspect it will be on First Friday), the early determination ensures that Uga VI's successor is ready for the fall pre-season training period.

Though a full list is not publicly available, known council members include Vince Dooley, Sonny Seller, Mark Richt, whoever is in the Hairy Dog uniform in any given year, Larry Munson, Herschel Walker, Suzanne Yoculan, Damon Evans, and Dominique Wilkins among others (Knowshon?). Lorne Smith is rumored to be up for induction into the council this year, but it is known that he has previously been denied entry at least 7 times in the past. The last meeting of the council was to elect Scott Howard as Larry Munson's replacement in his sportscasting duties - a decision which as met with lukewarm public reception.

Uga VI was buried on Monday in Sanford Stadium. Uga VII's official game debut will be on August 30th as Georgia kicks off its 2008 football season playing against the Georgia Southern Eagles. Go Dawgs.

Athens Links

Athens photographer / real estate mogul Daniel Peiken shared recent pics with us from the Summerbirds In the Cellar / Maserati / the Good Ship @ the 40 Watt show on 6/28/08 and from the Harvey Milk / Tenement Hall @ the 40 Watt show on 6/27/08.

Heads up on two new Athens Music related things:
1) There's a new blog called Athens Music Express, which its author describes as "self-indulgent", but then again, so are we.
and
2) There's a new, slick-looking free music magazine out there called Athens Blur. The debut issue has the Dropkick Murphys on the cover and a bunch of non-Athens stuff, so that's kinda weird, but on the other had it does have a story on AthFest and the Classic City Rollergirls, mentions Dead Confederate, and apparently hearts Pride Parade, so maybe it'll come around to be all Athens one day. Who knows? I guess that's kinda hard to sell more ads for, though.

Anyway, good luck to those guys.
