Happy Labor Day weekend!

Friday:

There's something called the NYC Comedy Takeover at Flicker on both Friday and Saturday nights. There are several NYC comedians performing, with music by Uber Luber Death Metal and Acoustic Coulier. Garbage Island is at the Caledonia, and the Vinyl Strangers are at Farm 255. John P. Strohm and some other out of town musicians are playing at the 40 Watt tonight. Rehab are making an appearance at the Georgia Theatre, and The Matt Kurz One are at the Go Bar. The Barefoot Hookers are at the Tasty World.

Saturday:

Game day. Beware of downtown.

Night 2 of the NYC Comedy Takeover at Flicker. The 40 Watt plays host to The Ginger Envelope, Stereo Campbell, and One Man Machine (out of New Orleans). Lots of loud at the Caledonia with The Dumps, Music Hates You, Subrig Destroyer, and In The Lurch. Mercer West and David Specht will be at the Go Bar (and they are looking for a drummer and lead singer, by the way). Bitch Switch will be the DJs at Little Kings.

There's also the weekly Farmer's Market at Bishop Park.

Monday:

Happy Labor Day!

The Vinyl Strangers and Ishues will be at the 40 Watt, with Jesse Jackson speaking at 8. This is a celebration of workers' rights.

Video Time Wasters

Since my dad learned how to use email, all I got is forward after forward after forward. It's quite annoying. But, every now and then, he sends something good. This video of Stephen Wiltshire, "the living camera," is pretty amazing. He also sent me this video of a double knockout. Nuts!

Tonight in Athens

Nothing but dance parties and karaoke tonight, folks. You're on your own.

Scratch that! Somehow I failed to notice the show at the 40 Watt tonight. Creepy, Bambara, Gift Horse, The Flowers of Evil, and Stegosaurus. Update: Apparently Matt Thompson and Friends are playing at Farm. They must be in the band Coveralls that I wasn't familiar with.
And tonight at Cine:
GONZO SNEAK PREVIEW & HUNTER S. THOMPSON TRIBUTE - THU 8/28 @ 10p

Ciné presents a special midnite preview screening of Alex Gibney’s new documentary GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON, about the infamous gonzo journalist hailed as one of the bravest, funniest and most ruthlessly honest writers of his generation.
Before the screening, local artists, musicians & public figures will perform select readings from Thompson’s work at 10p in CinéLab. Among those slated to read include ACC Commissioner KELLY GIRTZ, writer/humorist JEFF FALLIS, local activist ED TANT, musicians LUKE FIELDS (We Vs. the Shark), ERIC CARTER, (Bloodkin), JIM HICKS (Casper & the Cookies), “BIG ANDY” HOLLINGSWORTH (The Dumps), CRAIG LIESKE (Garbage Island) and more special guests.

DNC Coverage

No better place to turn to for the play-by-play of the Democratic National Convention than Wonkette. Last night's lowdown is no exception.
9:39 PM — And now Brokaw’s just going on with a sad list of terrible things — wars without end, economic collapse, national decline, etc. Why does he hate America?

Tonight in Athens

Lots of music for a Wednesday night.

The 40 Watt is hosting a benefit for the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank this evening. Performers include The Squalls, Paul Lombard, and Frank Mason and Friends (interesting article about Frank at that link) . Summerbirds in the Cellar, Kebert Xela, and Spring Tigers are at the Caledonia. Big show at the Georgia Theatre with the Buddy System, Folklore, Future Ape Tapes, Christopher Without His Liver, and Matt Kurz One. And for those of you in Atlanta, My Morning Jacket at the Fox Theatre tonight.

Local Music News

Dark Meat has announced their fall tour, ending in New Orleans on Halloween night.

Fabchannel has put up a nice quality video of a Drive-By Truckers show from Amsterdam's Paradisio a few weeks ago. This is the same site that posted that super slick black and white Now Its Overhead video last year. They also have last month's B-52s show from there. Heck, just look at their archive list. Tons of cool videos there.

And I just ran across this brief tidbit for any Zep fans out there.

Tonight in Athens

Sunflower Music Series FlyerTonight marks the final show in the Sunflower Music Series at the Athens Botanical Gardens. Hope for Agoldensummer, with special guest Jean Spencer, will be playing outside from 7-9 p.m. Update: The show at the Gardens tonight will be moved inside. Here's an update from William Tonks:
Tonight’s acts will sound really, really good in the Conservatory, and it’s music at an hour that allows us to rise in the morning, not early afternoon, and there’s beer, wine, and really tasty Cheerios Snack Mix. We’ll leave the light on for ya.
Also outside this evening is Dan Nettles' solo gig at Farm 255. Clay Leverett will be performing a solo set at the Tasty World, and Jittery Joe's Eastside will be showing the Sonic Youth film Corporate Ghost: The Videos 1990–2002.

More Free Local Music

Tonight in Athens

Ghostfinger, Moth Vamana (includes members of Ham1), and others are at the Caledonia tonight. Never heard them before, but the description of Dutchess and the Duke at Tasty World sounds somewhat interesting.

Monday has turned into game night. There's the weekly music trivia at Little Kings at 8, Let's Make a Deal is back at the Georgia Theatre, and Kingpins has started bingo on Monday nights.

911 Call

Here's your Friday laugh (if the drummer jokes didn't do it for you). It's work safe.

Free Music

Ham1 is wisely offering their new album, The Underground Stream, as a free download on their website at the moment. They did the same with the last one, which is still available there, and that's when I first gave them a listen. You can download (or stream) one track at a time, or grab the whole thing at once. Thanks guys!

In other news, there's some mention of Athens & R.E.M. in this Matthew Sweet article.

Friday is Joke-day.

Today's Theme: Drummers

Here are a couple of classic ones to get you started:

What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?
A drummer.

How can you tell when a drummer is at the door?
The knocking speeds up.

OK y'all know what to do.
For extra hilarity replace all occurrences of drummer in these jokes with "Jeff Griggs".

This Weekend in Athens

Happy weekend, folks! You can tell fall is almost here...a lot more shows to keep track of.

Friday:

Heavy Petty will be at the Caledonia laying down the Tom Petty covers. The 40 Watt is hosting a triple bill tonight of the Modern Skirts, Spring Tigers and The Empties. Local bluegrass band the Jumpin Jesus Christers are at Flicker, and Mouser is at the Go Bar.

Greg ReeceI haven't seen Redneck Greece Deluxe on a downtown Athens bill in a long time, but they are tonight at Little Kings. The Thrill Hammers will be backing them up and also playing their own set. Longtime music legend Leon Russell is at the Melting Point this evening, and Chris McKay and the Critical Darlings are at the Rye Bar. Kite to the Moon is playing a birthday set at midnight at the Tasty World.

Saturday:

Whoa, lots of shows on Saturday as well.

Tin Cup Prophette is peforming an early show at Ashford Manor. The Flip Scoldjah and ExcaliBRAH will be at Flicker, and the Packway Handle Band, along with Kaitlin Jones, will be at the Georgia Theatre. Dancer vs. Politician is at the Go Bar, and there's a big bash over at Terrapin, with Bain Mattox and a slew of others bands performing. Ken Will Morton is at the Rye Bar.

For something different, Little Kings is having an End of Summer Luau Bash with Hawaiin music by Kinky Waikiki. Doesn't sound familiar? It shouldn't. It's their first show and it's made up of great local musicians, so I personally recommend this show. DJ Kurt Wood will also be throwing down some surf music tracks. Is it really almost the end of the summer?

There's the weekly Farmer's Market at Bishop Park. If you are looking to adopt a pet, or just looking to help pets, there are two events you can help with Saturday. Pawtroplis is having an Adopt-a-Pet day, sponsored by Athens Canine Rescue. You can see the dogs available for adoption on their website. Flanagans is also having a pet adoption and SPCA fundraiser. And for something different, there's a flea market hosted by Friends of the Garden at the State Botanical Gardens of Athens.

Sunday:

A very rare treat of Hayride at Kingpins. All their shows this year have been badass. And what else are you doin' on a Sunday night (besides recovering from the weekend)? Just sayin'...

Tonight in Athens

Don ChambersIn the way of music, you can check out Don Chambers, I presume performing solo, and Matt Stoessel at Flicker. If you want to help support Nuci's Space, Grogus will be there this evening. (Note: this show is Aug. 28 and at the GA Theatre, but definitely a benefit for Nuci's). Ken Will Morton is on WUOG's Live in the Lobby.

Jim White will be presenting the film Mule Skinner Blues this evening at Cine'. There's two screenings of the film with White performing a spoken word bit in the middle. I'm not familiar with any of the bands at the 40 Watt or the Caledonia tonight. Anyone have suggestions for those bands?

In the way of comedy, Brian Posehn and Bo Burnham will be at UGA's Legion Field tonight. $15 advance/$20 door for non-students.

Tonight in Athens

Mikey DwyerMikey Dwyer and the Starter Kits and the Holy Liars are at the 40 Watt tonight. Also, Nelo is at the Georgia Theatre. Now I've never heard a lick of their music, and any description that mentions Jack Johnson revolts me, but I hear they are popular so I figured someone may want to know that's tonight. There's a night of dance music over at the Farm, and there's the weekly Wednesday night dance party at the Go Bar.

In the News

McArdleFormer Mendoza Line's Shannon McArdle has her new solo album reviewed in Pitchfork.

Drive-By Truckers announce their "Rock and Roll Means Well" joint fall tour with The Hold Steady.

And, though it's not local news, I like this quote from Morrissey about Warner releasing a dvd of his music without his permission or involvement.
"The slapdash release of Morrissey Live at the Hollywood Bowl is done by Warner without any consultation to me whatsoever, and is in breach of their terms as laid out by themselves in an agreement made for the film between Warner and my ex-manager. Being Warner, predictably the sleeve art is appalling. It is the work of cash-hounds, and I urge people NOT to buy it. I am not signed to Warner, and no royalties from this DVD will come to me. Please spend your money elsewhere."

Tonight in Athens

There's a few choices tonight in the way of music. Birds and Wire are at the Caledonia, the Carl Lindberg Trio is at Farm 255, and the Would Be Farmers are at Flicker.

There's also something called a Bearded Lady Date Auction at Max Canada, with music by Hola Halo. It's sponsored by the Athens Beard and Moustache Club and they do say that if you don't have any facial hair, you are still welcome, and "appropriate facial hair will be provided to you." Um, okay.

If you live on the Eastside and you like The Smith's, Jittery Joe's is showing The Smiths - Live at Versailles this evening.

Tonight in Athens

There's loud and more loud at the Caledonia tonight, including a name that always makes me shudder when I see it in print: Anus Full of Wasabi. Other than that, I'm assuming rock and roll trivia at Little Kings, starting at 8 p.m.

Or, you can just sit at home and watch the Olympics.

Monday Morning Sound-off

Monday again. Why does the weekend always seem to by way too fast? Anybody see a good show or a good movie they'd like to recommend?

I must say the opening ceremonies to the Olympics this year was pretty amazing. But, at the same time, I would like to wrap a piece of duct tape around Matt Lauer's mouth. Man, was his commentary annoying or what?

Locals Get Involved with Politics

If you are an Obama supporter, check out this site launched today by some local musicians, whom most of you probably know.
"After looking in every tube on the internets, we found that there are very few options to A) get rad-looking and inexpensive Obama t-shirts and B) connect a solid monetary high-five to Barack Obama.

We think our shirts are awesome, and we hope you do too. But, the best thing about these shirts is that we’re donating 25% to help Obama win the election in November. Not 25% of the profit, mind you, but 25% of whatever you decide to spend. In essence, if you buy a $10 shirt, you’ve helped us donate $2.50. If you buy a $12 shirt, you’ve helped us donate $3.00. If you buy $1256.38 worth of shirts, you’ve helped us donate $314.10... You get the idea."

This Weekend in Athens

Friday:

Happy 8/08/08. The 40 Watt is hosting a benefit for Habitat for Humanity tonight with Don Chambers, Page Campbell, Diego Catalan, Paul McHugh, Patrick Carey and Matt Stoessel. I assume these are solo sets, but then again, maybe not. Can anyone clarify?

Over at the Caledonia, Subrig Destroyer and Zoroaster will be bringing the loud. Mouser is at Flicker and Lazer/Wülf is at the Tasty World. Celebrating Michael Jackson's 50th birthday (wow, where does the time go?) at Go Bar Little Kings are DJs Baby Pandas and Mahogany.

Saturday:

THSThe Hold Steady is at the 40 Watt, and should be a great show. Betsy Franck and the Bareknuckle Band is at the Georgia Theatre. That's all I have for you folks for Saturday night. Any other suggestions?

If you wake up early tomorrow, don't forget about the weekly Athens Farmers' Market at Bishop Park. There's also this month's Dance Dance Party Party over at Floorspace at 3 p.m. This is for ladies only. Ladies that are ready to bust a move, that is.

Bromance and Athens Music News

Maserati Press ShotMaserati's upcoming Remixes LP is now available for pre-order. I still am in awe of how good the last show was.

Uncut has a great review from the Drive-By Truckers' London show. This is my favorite part:
Live, too, Isbell, good as he was, is barely missed, with John Neff on guitar and pedal steel a more than adequate replacement and the band’s fabled three guitar line-up as ferocious tonight as it has ever been, while pianist Jay Gonzalez adds layers to their sound that weren’t previously there, by turns rocking hot and soulful, making you think more than once of Little Feat in their swampy prime.
Way to go, Athens! Sometimes I forget just how much amazing talent we have in this town. Keep it up!

On a funny note, my friend sent me this NPR article on Bromance at shows. We definitely get a lot of Bromance in Athens.

Tonight in Athens

There's the weekly dance party at Go Bar and some other dance party at Farm 255. As for bands, there's a few at the Caledonia and Flicker, but I'll leave it up to someone else to recommend one as I'm not familiar with any of them. I didn't have a picture to put up today for a particular band, so instead, here's one of TDJ's favorite pig in front of the Physical Graffiti building in NYC. Represent!

On another note, Mail Clerk (how's your first week out of Athens, btw?) sent us a heads up that Bob Dylan has a free single from his upcoming bootleg series #8 for download on his website. I only mention it because, well, it's Bob Dylan and I love him.

Finally, a big happy 40th birthday from TDJ to another lover of Bob Dylan, and a great bass player and guy, Jon Mills.
