Muxtape Exclusively for Bands

After some trouble with the RIAA, Muxtape is back online; however, with a shift in their focus. Bands take note.
Muxtape is relaunching as a service exclusively for bands, offering an extremely powerful platform with unheard-of simplicity for artists to thrive on the internet. Musicians in 2008 without access to a full time web developer have few options when it comes to establishing themselves online, but their needs often revolve around a common set of problems. The new Muxtape will allow bands to upload their own music and offer an embeddable player that works anywhere on the web, in addition to the original muxtape format. Bands will be able to assemble an attractive profile with simple modules that enable optional functionality such as a calendar, photos, comments, downloads and sales, or anything else they need. The system has been built from the ground up to be extended infinitely and is wrapped in a template system that will be open to CSS designers. There will be more details soon. The beta is still private at the moment, but that will change in the coming weeks.

Tonight in Athens

Well, it's Monday and we're back at work, but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop. Bo Bedingfield and The Wydelles, The Beauvilles out of Tampa, and Paper Scissors Rocketpack from Florida are at the Caledonia this evening. This is a happy hour show! First band at 6:30.

Mason Jennings is at the 40 Watt, and up the street and around the corner, you can catch the George W. Bush Cover Band at the Globe, followed by a dj. This is a free show celebrating The Globe's 19th birthday. There's 3 bands with intriguing descriptions at the Go Bar tonight as well.

It is also Monday which means bingo at Kingpins and rock and roll trivia night at Little Kings, unless our fearless host of music trivia is going to the show at the Caledonia instead. Hopefully Lord Bitter will confirm the real deal in the comment section.

This Weekend in Athens

We made it, folks. It's Friday! Does anyone else still get giddy about Fridays, like we did back in high school? Or that feeling that you have the last day of school just before summer starts? That's how every Friday feels to me.

Now that I've shared this with you, I'll give you the rundown on the weekend.

Friday:

BloodkinThe 40 Watt has a good lineup tonight. Bloodkin, Sleepyhorses and Tuscaloosa's Dexateens are sharing the bill. Future Ape Tapes are next door at the Caledonia, Chris McKay is at Alibi, and Hola Halo is at Flicker. DJ Mahogany is spinning tunes at the Go Bar, and Strawberry Flats are at the Melting Point.

And before you do all that, don't forget that tonight is the presidential debate at Ole' Miss. That is, unless John McCain gets in the way of things.

Saturday:

StereolabGame day. The Dawgs play Alabama at home. I hope we kick their ass.

It's also Farmer's Market morning at Bishop Park. I saw my friend's vegetables she bought there last week and they looked great.

On the music front, there's a big show in the way of Britain's Stereolab at the 40 Watt. Atlas Sound is opening. (That's the solo project of Bradford Cox from Deerhunter.) Mikey Dwyer and the Starter Kits are at the Caledonia, and Kilroy and the Flowers of Evil are at the Go Bar. The Flicker has quite a few bands tonight, 2 of them being Casper and the Cookies and The Visitations. And mixing it up lately, Farm 255 has Ishues set to perform.

Sunday:

The end of the week means that Kenosha Kid will be playing at Kingpins.

On a final note, The Day Jobs would like to give a birthday shout out to Dana today! Hope you have a good one!

Wowsers

There's a Louisiana state representative who is advocating a plan to sterilize poor people and offer rich people tax incentives to pro-create.
Worried that welfare costs are rising as the number of taxpayers declines, state Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, said Tuesday he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied.
It also could include tax incentives for college-educated, higher-income people to have more children, he said.
On a completely unrelated note, he represents David Duke's old district.

Benji HughesLots of music around town tonight. Seems like every venue has something going on. Benji Hughes and Man Man are at the 40 Watt. Farm 255 is offering something different with the Hawaiian tunes of Kinky Waikiki and the big sounds of The HEAP Project. Just over the wall, One Man Machine and Animal Electric are at the Caledonia. Elijah Neesmith (Jumpin' Jesus Christers) is at the Flicker Bar, Elevation is at the Tasty World, and Cross Canadian Ragweed is at the Georgia Theatre.

If you don't want to venture all the way into downtown, there's Cars Can Be Blue and Twin Powers at the Go Bar. The Charlie Garrett Band, made up of local musicians, is at the Melting Point and Nuci's Space is also joining the fold with musical offerings tonight. Stegosaurus and Kinky WaikikiPholksinger Josh (described as gangsta folk??) are set to perform there.

There's also live music at both The Globe and the Roadhouse this evening, and djs at both Little Kings and Mercury Lounge. Good luck on your adventures tonight. Looks like there's quite a few to choose from.

Goodbye Sweet-Tooth

Another Athens band folds. A message from the band:
Hey everybody,

It looks like Sweet-Tooth Simpleton is kaput, done, splitsville, etc. - as so often happens the extended hiatus became the end of the band. Elijah will be doing solo stuff, including a show I think this Thurs at Flicker or Little Kings, not sure which one. I am putting together a new band as soon as possible. I think the sound will be a good bit different, hopefully incorporating some of the more experimental stuff I used to do, but I think I'll play some of the same songs. Thanks to everybody who came to our shows. I'm hoping to post some of our unreleased stuff on the myspace page over the next few weeks.

Okay then -
Andy

Quite a few choices of things to do tonight. And it's only Monday.

A. Armada is playing at the Caledonia, along with Kebert Xela and a few others. Next door at the 40 Watt is the Band of Annuals from Salt Lake, with Brian Connell and Nate Nelson opening. Paleface is at the Georgia Theatre, and there's always games with trivia night at Little Kings and bingo at Kingpins.

Monday Morning Sound-Off

Today is the official beginning of the fall season. Or, as OVOR would say, the beginning of autumn. You gotta love this weather. Should be a good week of shows, culminating in the final goal of Georgia kicking Alabama's ass on Saturday. (Even I know what game is coming up.)

But it's Monday, and I'm still lamenting this past weekend being over. They always go by too fast, don't you think? How was your's? Tell us about it.

This Weekend in Athens

The weekend is already shaping up to be great if the weather stays like it is this afternoon, as well as lots of events to keep you busy all weekend. (No links today though...blame it on Friday laziness.)

Friday:

The weekend starts off nice with a free show at the 40 Watt. This is a cd release party for Dead Confederate's new record, Wrecking Ball, and the supporting bands are Gift Horse, Kuroma (ex-Whigs bassist Hank Sullivant's project), and Twin Tigers. A few doors up is Birds & Wire at Flicker. Around the corner at 11, you can go get your dance groove on with DJ Other Voices, Other Rooms at Farm 255. (This is where you may personally confront DJ OVOR for any comments he's made that have offended you on this site, or now that I think about it, present him with any Irish food offerings.)

The Dictatortots are doing their share of good deeds by performing at the St. Jude's Benefit at the Tasty World. If you are in the mood for a Scot, there's Craig Ferguson at the Classic Center. And Athens' longtime-running band, The Normaltown Flyers, are at Allen's.

Saturday:

Game day. Go Dawgs. I think the game is at night so lots of folks will be inside watching it on t.v.

If you don't have a hangover from the night before, you can get up early and hit the Athens Farmers' Market at Bishop Park or the Gypsy Artist Market at the Lyndon House, where all proceeds will benefit the Arts Center.

Another big show at the 40 Watt with Cinemechanica, Lazer/Wülf, Young Livers, and Canvas Solaris. Kenosha Kid is celebrating a cd/dvd release at Cine', Dancer vs. Politician is at Flicker, Outformation is at the Georgia Theatre, and DJ Baby Pandas is spinning tunes at Little Kings. (Those parties outside at Little Kings on Saturday night are always packed.) The Matt Kurz One is at the Go Bar, and there's lots of bands, such as the Packway Handle Band and Hope for Agoldensummer at the North Georgia Folk Festival at Sandy Creek Park. Looks as though there will be variety of fun things there for kids too.

Sunday:

Kenosha Kid plays night 2 of their event at Cine', though it's at 4 p.m., so they can still have time to play their weekly gig at Kingpins later in the evening. Hardest working band in Athens, perhaps? And if you aren't in the mood for music, there's also the Classic City Rollergirls Bout at Skate-a-Round USA.

As always, thanks to Mike White for allowing us to display his fabulous pictures.

Happy International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Every year we celebrate the holiday here on The Day Jobs. This year I think some pirate jokes are in order.

What's a pirate's favorite kind of cookie?
Ships ahoy

This pirate walks into a bar with a big ship's wheel down his pants. The bartender says, "Excuse me, sir, but do you know you have a ship's wheel down the front of your pants?" And the pirate says...Aaargh, it's driving me nuts!!

What does a pirate think happens at the end of time?
Arrrrmageddon.

Why did the pirate not learn how to bowl?
He had a severe hook.

What did the pirate cheeerleader say?
Give me an r. Give me an r. Give me an r. What's that spell? rrrrrr

Why did the pirate refuse to say, "Aye, Aye, Captain"?
Because he's only got one eye.

With all the cool air this week, it will be nice to catch Pride Parade and The Jack Burton outside tonight at Farm 255. (Gotta say, I love the drawing in this flyer.)

The Caledonia has several bands tonight. Bambara,The Complete Adventurer, The Flowers of Evil, and Last American Hero are all slated to play. Clay Leverett is back on the eastside again, this time at Fat Daddy's. And there's a few others choices tonight. Feel free to chime in you have a recommendation.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are at the Georgia Theatre tonight with Texas' James McMurtry opening (shouldn't it be the other way 'round? No offense to Jason). Another national touring act, The Hackensaw Boys, are at the 40 Watt. Hope for Agoldensummer are also on the bill, though I'm not sure who's opening for who.

The Dumps and Rat Babies, along with a few out of town bands, are at the Caledonia. Eric "Big E" Gregory (Twain) is at Little Kings and the weekly "Burn It Up" night is at the Rye Bar.

This Weekend in Athens

Happy Friday! Looks like there are some good choices of things to do in town this weekend.

Friday:

Sweet FlyerBig show at the Georgia Theatre tonight. It's a cd release party for both Liz Durrett and Don Chambers and GOAT. Both of whom are on the WARM recording label. The Arcs will be opening the entire thing. Interview with Liz and Don here.

Gemini Cricket and The Flowers of Evil, along with a few other bands, are at the Flicker Bar tonight. Clay Leverett will be doing a set at Alibi. Longtime guitar player Tinsley Ellis is at the Melting Point.

DJ Mahogany and Bitch Switch are at the Caledonia as part of a graduation party for some Athens Tech students. I'm not sure if it's open to the public, but I assume so since it's been advertised in a few places. I think Gordon had something to do with this, so maybe he can clarify for us. Around the corner, more record-spinning with DJ Kurt Wood at Little Kings.

(Update: Just up 78, Venice is Sinking is playing in Decatur tonight at a place called Kavarna.)

Saturday:

TCPBig lineup at the 40 Watt for Saturday night. Tin Cup Prophette, The Low Lows, Bain Mattox, and American Aquarium (out of North Carolina) are on the bill. DJ Mahogany is at Farm 255, and DJ Other Voices Other Rooms is a few steps away at Little Kings. Slated to perform at Flicker is Ben Mize, who I haven't seen play live in at least a few years. Dubconscious and the George Bush Cover Band are at the Georgia Theatre. The talented guitarist Monte Montgomery is at the Melting Point.

There's a few fundraisers to pay attention to, if you feel as though you are in a giving mood this weekend. Incatepec will play Andean music at Cine', and proceeds will benefit People of Hope and Casa de la Cultura. There's a book sale at the Oconnee County Library this weekend, as well as the Athens Run for the Dogs event at Sandy Creek Park tomorrow morning.
The event will include a 5K race for runners and a 1-mile fun run and walk for people and their dogs.

All proceeds from this event will benefit Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. The specially bred and trained dog, training of the recipient, and regular follow-up services by Canine Companions for Independence professional staff are provided to its recipients at no cost for the working life of the team.
As usual, don't forget about the Athens Farmer's Market at Bishop Park. And the Dance Dance Party Party organizers would like all the ladies to know that tomorrow's event had to be cancelled. Stay tuned for more information on next month's event, however.

Sunday:

Gay Africa, Sweet Teath, and We Vs. The Shark are at Farm 255. Kenosha Kid is at Kingpins, and Dr. Arvin Scott & Drumming for Success are at the Green Room. Out of towners Paul Baribeau and Good Luck are at Transmetropolitan.

With all those different options, surely you can find something to do this weekend. Enjoy!

Peter Buck's Guitar Stolen

From R.E.M.'s website:
Sadly, Peter [Buck]'s signature Rickenbacker guitar was stolen from the stage immediately following tonight's [September 9] performance in Helsinki, Finland. This is Peter's infamous signature Rick, which has been the staple of Peter's arsenal both live and in the studio since the band released Chronictown in 1982. Needless to say, this instrument means a great deal to Peter and to R.E.M. It is our sincere hope that whoever is responsible for the loss, or whoever has information which can help recover the guitar, will come forward to receive a generous reward, no questions asked.

Tonight in Athens

The Winter Sounds are at the 40 Watt, Enoch is at the Caledonia, and Maximum Busy Muscle are at Flicker. There's also a "hobo cabaret" at the Georgia Theatre tonight. To be honest, I'm not familiar with much of the music playing tonight, so any suggestions are welcome.

Another List / Local Music News

There's a list for everything. This is one for the 100 greatest, gayest albums of all time.

There's a good review of Dark Developments, the new Vic Chesnutt/Elf Power album, here.

Though I'm a few weeks late on this news, the title for the forthcoming Bloodkin album, hopefully to be released before the end of the year, is revealed on the wonderful Aquarium Drunkard blog. (Justin who runs that site used to live in Athens and his label, Autumn Tone Records, houses Daniel Hutchens' first two solo albums.) That particular post contains their cover of Breakfast in Bed from the All Dolled Up album, for any Eddie Hinton fans out there. (He has Dusty Springfield as the original artist, but she just helped make it famous...the song was written in Muscle Shoals by Eddie Hinton). Bloodkin is also releasing a box set sometime soon. You can read an excerpt from the liner notes, which describe a nice slice of Athens life, on their myspace page.

Tonight In Athens

The WhigsA lot more choices tonight in the music department.

The Whigs are headlining at the 40 Watt this evening, with Tokyo Police Club and The Coast opening. Now that the students are back, I'm guessing this show will be packed. The Georgia Theatre is playing host to The Heap and Topaz and Mudphonic out of Austin. The guys from Future Ape Tapes are mixing vinyl, CDs and improvised live music tonight at the Rye Bar.

J Roddy and The BusinessJ. Roddy Walston and The Business out of Baltimore, along with The Dictatortots and the Holy Liars, are making an appearance at the Tasty World. The Ones and Hola Halo will be joined by others at the Caledonia. Around the corner at Farm 255, there's reggae band Soja and some kind of fusion side project with Carl Lindberg and others.

Get out there and support some live music!

Bands Helping Charities

A friend from North Carolina contacted me to see if I knew of any bands that could help. I figured I'd post the request from the person he's helping to see if anyone is willing to send in a cd. If so, please send signed cds to the address below. Thanks in advance.
My name is Meredy Swafford.

We are trying to get donations for the First Annual Out of the Darkness Ride, to raise funds for suicide prevention and awareness. We need items for our raffle and auction. We are requesting signed CD's from Musicians. Suicide affects so many of our artistic world, I thought it would be appropriate.

The"1st Annual Out of the Darkness Ride", Oct 18th is to be held in conjunction with the W-S Out of the Darkness Walk, which will be held at Tanglewood on Sept 20th. All Proceeds will go to the W-S Walk. The walks are held all over the country to benefit the AFSP-The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. AFSP.org / Outofthedarkness.org

This year a $63,000 grant went to Duke Hospital for a Suicide Research Project from national, and close to $5,000 was awarded to the PCSP (Piedmont Consortium for Suicide Prevention). The PCSP has members from various MHA including Forsyth, Wake, Stokes, Guilford etc... So the money does serve us here locally.

Why is this project so meaningful to me? Dec 14, 2005, I lost my husband of 15 years to his own hand. I help peer facilitate a survivors support group held at Kate B Reynolds Hospice, I am on the committee for both the walk and the PCSP.

Here is a link to my walk site. I have also attached a Ride flier

Please email any questions to Somethingtorideabout@gmail.com

CD's may be mailed to me at:
