Deerhunter's latest album (and bonus disc) Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. gets a lengthy review for "best new music" in Pitchfork. Speaking of Cox, Stereogum has new Halloween mp3s from Atlas Sound. The B-52s probably stand to make a pretty penny redoing the NBC chimes. The Music Tapes make Stereogum's list of the top 8 bands from CMJ. Here's their review of the show. And Led Zeppelin touring without Robert Plant and John Bonham? Eek.
If you have kids, you may be interested to know about the free Halloween carnival at St. Mary's Hospital from 6 to 8 p.m. It's a benefit for children with diabetes.

There's some comedy around town tonight. Mitch Fatel is at the UGA Tate Center and comedian Justin McClure is at Flicker. Justin was a semi-finalist on Last Comic Standing. As for all the music around town tonight, nothing is really sticking out to me, so if you have a plug for a particular band tonight, now's your chance to tell us.

Round 3: Presidential debate. I learned from the "elite media" this morning that both candidates requested their personal air conditioner units to be above their heads so as to counteract the sweat that could show on their faces. They also asked to get exact replicas of the water glasses they'll be holding in the debate in order to avoid it slipping out of their hands later. That's worse than the rock band riders.
In the less frustrating category, we have Creepy and Magnetic Morning at the Caledonia tonight, Birds & Wire at the 40 Watt, Quiet Hooves and some out-of-towners at the Farm, and Ryan Hetrick and company at Flicker.
Just saw this from the Kindercore folks: Come watch the final Obama/McCain debate on the huge projection screen at the GO Bar this Wednesday! There will be McCain bingo, ObamaRad shirts for sale (all profits go to the Obama campaign!) and as many drinks as your little body can handle! After the debate there will be dancing with DJ Fluid Karma and live music from The Matt Kurz One, Jordan & Enoch! Party starts at 8 • Debate starts at 9 • Music until 2

We made it, kids. It's the weekend! As usual, Athens is not short on choices of things to get into.
Friday:
You will find a variety of acts at the 40 Watt this weekend, thanks to Chunklet. Deerhunter returns to Athens after a small hiatus, and comedian Brent Weinbach is performing as well. Other bands include Twin Tigers and Gentleman Jesse & His Men. This is all in honor of Chunklet Magazine's 15th Anniversary.
The Found Footage Festival at Cine' seems like an entertaining choice as well. Bet there's some weird stuff in all that old footage. Star Room Boy Dave Marr writes about it here. Over at the Caledonia, there's The Winter Sounds, Little Francis, and Allison Weiss. The Holy Liars are at Farm 255, brand new band Favorite Cousins is at Flicker, and the Bearfoot Hookers are at Fat Daddy's on the Eastside. The Empties are at the Tasty World, Adam Klein is on WUGA at 4 p.m., and if you need to get your dance on, DJ Baby Pandas is hookin' the tunes up at the Go Bar.
Saturday:
Game day. This is another big one: Dawgs vs. the TN Vols.
More of the Chunklet extravaganza. Tonight is Mastodon with comedian Brian Posehn (more info on Brian here.) Should be great. If that doesn't strike your fancy, or you want to run over there during breaks at the 40 Watt, Tom Petty cover band Heavy Petty is playing outside at Farm 255. Between those two venues at Flicker is Page Campbell (Hope for Agoldensummer) and Melissa Lynn Colbert (Creepy). After all that, hop on over to Little Kings for DJ Other Voices Other Rooms.
At 3 p.m. at Floorspace, for ladies only, is Dance Dance Party Party. And don't forget about the Farmer's Market at Bishop Park from 8-12.
Sunday:
It's for charity, so I"ll mention it. Over at National:
Seasonal family-style dinner to benefit Terra Madre, an international group working to increase sustainable food production. Make reservations by Oct. 10 by emailing meleventry@aol.com or calling 706-206-7490.

There's shows around town tonight, but most bands I'm not familiar with so if anyone feels like recommending something, go at it. One band that I am familiar with, however, is Galactic and they are playing at the Georgia Theatre tonight. Though I haven't seen them in years, I can say they were usually a good time, so that'd be my recommendation for the evening if you feel like going out.

Don't forget to check Wonkette for the always hilarious play-by-play of the debates. This time the drinking game was based around the word "maverick."
Here’s what happened last night, in case you missed all the Action because you chose to plan your drinking game around every time Palin said the word “maverick,” in which case you probably died around 9:15 PM.

I don't know about you guys, but this has been a tough work week for me and I'm glad it's the weekend! That being said, no time for links at the moment, but here's the haps in town this weekend nonetheless.
Friday:
The Avett Brothers are back for night 2 at the Georgia Theatre. There's a big show at the Caledonia tonight with Bambara, Creepy, Deaf Judges, and Pegasuses-XL. Modern Skirts and Venice is Sinking will be bringing their sounds to the 40 Watt. I'm sure it will be packed.

Stegosaurus are playing the Tasty World and Especially the Children are at the Rye Bar. Over on the eastside is the Holy Liars. Elijah is playing at Allen's, and Moth Vamana are at Farm 255. Sweet Tooth Simpleton is performing possibly their last show at Little Kings this evening.

Over at the Georgia Theatre, Deaf Judges, RJD2, and Velveteen Pink are performing. Paul Thomas and others are at the Go Bar, and the Emmitt-Nershi Band are at the Melting Point. Dan Nolte and Tendaberry are playing at Little Kings.
There's also the Thunderjam out in Winterville this weekend. All proceeds will benefit Nuci's Space, and there's quite a few bands playing. Last but not least, DJ Other Voices Other Rooms will be spinning tunes at the Mercury Lounge this evening.
Sunday:
Just when you thought you may be resting, I'm afraid that may not be the case. Kingpins is having the Night of the Living Lebowski. "Movie screening and trivia, costume contest, white russian and sarsaparilla specials and the entire soundtrack to The Big Lebowski performed by The Little Lebowski Urban Achievers." The band is made up of Dan Nettles, Ben Spraker, Rand Lines, Robby Handley and Seth Hendershot.
Continuing the Sunday night music at Farm 255 is Mass Solo Revolt. And if you are a parent, Clocked is having some kind of Baby Dance Party for kids up to 8 years old. It will be baby proof, they say.
Whew, I'm exhausted writing all that. But at least there's choices!

Yet another evening of national touring acts in town. Okkervil River, Crooked Fingers, and Black Joe Lewis & the Honey Bears are at the 40 Watt. The Avett Brothers are at the Georgia Theatre. There's Vice Presidential debate watching at the Go Bar and Little Kings. Little Kings will have a dance party following the VP throwdown. Michelle Malone and Drag the River are at the Melting Point.
Now...who wants to deliver me some breakfast?
Two updates:
From the obamarad.com folks: Hey Athens people, we are helping host the VP Debate party tonight at Little Kings and will be bringing the ObamaRad shirts to sell for locals who dont want to pay for shipping. Things will get rolling at 8 with free beer and hot dogs (and veggie dogs) while they last and then the cash bar as usual. The debate start at 9 and should be A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
And from Nuci's Space: "Tonight is Ben and Jerry's percentage night at their College Avenue location." If you feel like getting ice cream for charity, well, there you have it.
